This is an unprecedented move, cierra. Reporter yes, good morning. All eyes are on berkeley after wrapping up that Council Meeting that lasted until 3 00 in the morning. Councilmembers decided that policing here in the city of berkeley needed to change and some of those changes would really be the first of its kind in the nation and could lay the blueprint for agencies across the nation. Now pay attention. Were going to break down what happened at that meeting. Now last night there were a total of five proposals related to policing combined into one omnibus measure. Many of the measures which included the creation of a new department to handle traffic related stops and duties, an audit of police calls and stops, the creation of a specialized care unit to handle the nonpolice trauma calls those were all lumped into one. A pitch to Defund Police by 50 was not included in that allencompassing proposal. After hours of Public Comment many in favor of defunding the police every councilmember but one voted to pass the measure. She abstained from voting explaining the proposal did not offer enough change. Take a listen to what some of the residents had to say outside of that meeting. They wont be able to beat people no more. I believe the police do need to be armed but need to have more accountance and work on camera. Having that camera on. Reporter in terms of time lines for when the changes can take place the councilmembers did agree this would not happen overnight and would take money to reallocate some of those budgets. They want to restart that conversation to align with conversations regarding the 2021 budget discussion. And back up here a lot of the discussion about restructuring and refocusing this Police Department came after the george floyd death. It was in that moment that conversations around the nation were being had about race and Racial Injustice.
