Health officers say its worrisome. Weve seen a concerted health increase in counties throughout california and in other parts of the country over the last few weeks. Weve also seen an increase in cases in our county at a smaller uptick in hospitalizations. Both bay area counties are working on revised orders and well issue them next week. Local leaders making the decision is how its supposed to work. Imperial county and others, hes warned he will step in if need be. If theyre not able to come to a consensus, i am committed to intervening as is my role and responsibility as governor in the state of california. In san jose, rob lets look at the relationship between the surges, this shows the county the governor is concerned about. This represents the daily news cases for 100,000 people. The bay area began to shelter a march, april, may. Look at phase 2. Outdoor dining and Retail Businesses opened. You can see the number of cases slowly going up. When 2a happened like hair salons reopening. You can see this big spike in the past week. Lets go to santa clara county, not as dramatic as Contra Costa County. The county hasnt reopened as quickly. Its one of the most conservative in the state. You can see cases actually flattening, going down during this shelter at home march, april and most of may. This is the beginning of phase 2. Still relatively flat. But look, this past week, cases going up right there. Thats why some counties are reversing course and slowing things down again, raj. One of the counties, San Francisco county, putting the brakes, talking about reversing course. Hair salons and barber shops preparing to reopen on monday as part of the next phase for the city. Today, mayor breed announcing the city is delaying those plans after the city recorded 103 cases, new cases of covid19 just yesterday. The delay also impacts tattoo shops, outdoor bars, museums and the zoo. What that sadly means is our plans for monday to reopen a number of businesses and maces, those plans places, those plans are put on pause. The mayor is concerned the number of new cases could double in the next week and overwhelm our hospitals. The Health Director will determine a new date for the higher risk businesses to reopen. That could come by early next week. Tonight its official be. The European Union is banning american travelers according to a report from the new york times. The reason . The u. S. Is considered too risky because we have not controlled the outbreak. Other potential country not allowed into the eu are russia and brazil. Sneemt we have an update from san quentin. Some prisoners will be transferred to try and stop the surge of cases inside the prison. As of today, 545 inmaids tested inmates have tested positive. 136 of the positive cases are on death row. Prison Officials Say theyll move some of the inmates to northern kern state prison near bakersfield. The inmates will be tested before the transfer and quarantined at the new facility. San quentins outbreak started after transfers from a prison in chino and hadnt been tested for up to a month. This is pride weekend. Because of the pandemic, its gone virtual. While the official celebration is all online, there is a growing call for people to take to the streets anyway. Just two hours ago, an unofficial trans march and protesters, several dozen to delores park. This is in solidarity with the black lives Matter Movement. Most people found out about it with online flyers. Similar anonymous calls for a pride is a riot parade on sunday. We asked about the expectations. We know this really began in protest. Its certainly the right move to hit the pause button. I think when we were seeing increased cases in california, we were saying, wow, is this just a testing phenomenon. Were testing more people. But i think we all start to get nervous right now, because our hospital beds are filling up in the state and our icu beds are filling up. Once hospitalizations and icu admissions increase, we start to get nervous about not flattening that curve as we did a few months ago. The governor called that out today. Specifically Contra Costa County and santa clara county. Their hospitalization rates are up. What are you seeing at ucsf . How is it looking there . Were still in sort of a lull here in San Francisco county. But its starting to affect us, because at ucsf we get transfers from a lot of other counties. Particularly for investigational drugs or higher levels here. Were starting to see more transfers. We still have capacity. But again, its like that tank that fills in very slowly and at some point the tank overflows. We want to stop it before it get there. Were hearing a rising number of cases of hospitalizations in young people. Can you get more into that . Yeah. So weve been getting some information from contact tracers. So when we investigation the outbreaks, weve been seeing theyre associated with a lot of large indoor activities. Behind closed doors. Graduation parties, and in the south weve been seeing frat parties and pledge parties being the source of a lot of outbreaks. So i think thats whats driving the epidemiology shifting to younger individuals. Of course, theres that feeling of instability and the understandable feeling that im tired of being at home for all these months. For sure. People have cabin fever, especially the young folks out there. You are treating covid19 patients, things are opening up. I know youre busy working 24 7 at the hospital. When you do go out, do you go out with your family, are you comfortable with it at all . Thats a great question. Usually im i dont care egg salad or getting salmonella or anything. But this time and this period, im still nervous. I havent even eaten outdoors in a restaurant. Ive gotten takeout. Im going on day trips to wine country, but not really feeling comfortable being in a congregate setting yet. As people are going out, what should they do . Wear their masks, socially distan distance. The three ws. Wearing your mask, the second is washing your hands and the third is watching your distance. I think the most important thing that i think most people are not doing yet everywhere, i think the simple act of wearing your mask. That helps protect you from transmitting to others, mainly, but also from you getting it from somebody else. The more people that wear it, the better we are as a community. Simply stated, the county said it was impossible to keep people off the beach. Nbc bay areas laura sambol shows us it didnt take long for crowds to rush to the coast. Santa cruz beaches beginning to look like it usually does in the summer. Crowded with towels and people spread across the sand. Kids building sand castles and families gathering for fun. Nice to get out again and enjoy the sun and the fresh air. Its happiness. Being listening to the water and being at the beach. The fresh air. For the past two months, beaches in santa cruz have officially been closed during the day. The restrictions were supposed to keep people from gathering in large groups and were expected to stay in place until after the fourth of july weekend. Law enforcement said so many people broke rules that it was virtually impossible to enforce it. Shop owner Kathleen Mendoza is thrilled restrictions have been lifted. She says many businesses on beach street have taken a big hit. For us, it just means that there will be more people coming here to enjoy the beach and actually bring us more business. You might think all beachgoers are carefree. But everyone we talk to still has covid on their minds. They seem to be smart about wearing their masks and restrics being lifted, the countys current shelter at home order will expire july 6th. Wearing face coverings in public will still be required.
