Democrats plan to block it. They say the bill is fundamentally flawed. The question is this. Who do you trust, the naacp or Mitch Mcconnell . Reporter the bill crafted by the senates lone black republican tim scott collects data and withholds federal funds from police that use chokeholds but doesnt ban them outright. Republicans accuse democrats of hindering progress. We have Chuck Schumer with a chokehold on the justice act and our opportunity for Police Reform in america. According to the press democrat councilmembers will continue the conversation today. Union city police are investigating the possible hate crime. A resident says someone vandalized his car because he had a black lives matter. Hes parked it for years without any problems. They say they are raising funds to help fix the car. They say no one should have had to endure anything like that. Continuing our coronavirus coverage, californias recent surge is continuing. On monday alone more than 5,000 people tested positive. 65 people died. U. P. S. Drivers say recent positive cases may be slowing some of your package deliveries. The union says five bay area u. P. S. Drivers have recently tested positive. Two in san bruno and three in San Francisco. The union is demanding tighter safety protocols including temperature checks upon entry, better social distancing and alerts when someone tests positive. I think the members would like to know who it is. That would give them some satisfaction of knowing they were in contact with this person. U. P. S. More of that june gloom hanging over the city as it mists and drizzles here, and then it just rolls back to the coast and gives San Francisco a little bit of sunshine. Were once again hitting the triple digits there while santa rosa will reach 84 degrees. Hot weather, the ocean breeze is too weak to cool us off in the inland valleys. Then the winds will pick up over the weekend as the storm system passes through the north. Take a look at our sevenday forecast, from the low 90s to the mid80s on saturday in some of the warmest spots. And then were in the low 80s. Thats the kind of weather we should be seeing at the end of june, highs in the low 80s while San Francisco will mostly be in the 60s especially for the weekend as we get more of the cooler ocean air moving across the city. Nbc bay area responds to a milpitas family faced with a huge hospital bill. So they asked consumer investigator chris chmura and his team to intervene. Reporter good morning. Last year the roy familys daughter was admitted to packard Childrens Hospital in palo alto under a doctors orders. They say they were there from midday until about 1 00 a. M. , but the hospital billed their insurance 16,000 for an overnight stay. Their copay was about 1,800. Since they didnt spend the night the roys thought that charge was excessive. They disputed it but the hospital stood by all of that. So the roys turned to us for help. We asked the hospital to review the case. It told us it cant comment because of privacy laws, but the roys said they got a partial refund of their copay, 569. 04. As the roys discovered your status in the hospital can have big consequences for the amount you are charged, like checking into a hotel. Once you are admitted to a hospital you might expect to pay for the room for the entire night. The federal government, in fact, recommends medicare subscribers ask whether theyre being labelled inpatient or outpatient. We think thats good advice for anyone. Oakland will reach 75 and only 60 today in Half Moon Bay as the fog remains overhead all throughout the afternoon. A look at a cooldown and the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. This as Oakland Schools are set to make that decision on whether to dismantle its campus policing. Today in the bays bob redell is live for us with overnight developments. Bob . Reporter the recent protests over the death of george floyd and the broader discussion about racial inequality in this country have raised questions about the effectiveness of Law Enforcement on school campuses. Just yesterday San Francisco unified decided it would no longer partner with or fund the San Francisco Police Department. Thats according to sfgate. Com. In a few hours from now the state superintendent of public instruction will announce how california will reevaluate the role police should play on campuses throughout the state and how that presence might negatively affect students. Incidentally late they are afternoon Oakland Unified School board will vote whether or not to dissolve its Police Department which currently employs ten officers and replace them with nonuniformed peacekeeping ambassadors. Yesterday, as you can see in the video, parents and students rallied to convince the board to say yes. Warriors head coach steve kerr also lent his voice to this movement which he describes as a real reckoning for america. To me this is what its about. You have to learn, to understand whats happening out there. There have been calls for Restorative Justice counseling, calls for trauma induced services. Reporter yesterday the Los Angeles Unified School District Board voted against a similar proposal to slash 90 of its budget. Sonoma county saw its largest single day increase since the pandemic began. Part of it centered around specific members of the community. I want to check in with today in the bays Cierra Johnson with a look at what Health Leaders are saying. Cierra . Reporter Health Officials here are on high alert after seeing a drastic spike in those covid cases. On monday alone they saw 50 new cases, thats 32 more than the day before. Now according to the press democrat the recent spike in cases is due to Community Spread with the countys Health Officers highlighting an unnamed business that provides services to the homeless in an unnamed Skilled Nursing facility. Health officials are working to contact those who they may have come into contact with and are working to relocate some of the Homeless Individuals to alternative shelter Like Community centers. As Health Officials continue to contact those who may have been in the Skilled Nursing facilities its important that we note it was a week ago that they saw the outbreak. Three employees at an unnamed winery did test positive but they did not have contact with the public. We will continue to follow the story as we learn more. Cierra johnson for today in the bay. 6 35 and new for you this morning, nascar driver Bubba Wallace speaking out on the today show saying he Still Believes that a noose was left in his garage despite what the fbi found. Now the fbi investigators determined that there was no hate crime when that rope was spotted in wallaces garage at talladega speedway in alabama. Investigators say that rope, well, its been the same one in that stall for months, at least since october. Thats when the previous race team used the rope to pull the garage door shut. Here is wallace on the today show this morning. It, in fact, was a noose. It was not a functioning noose but it was a noose. And whoever had the time to create that and tie it up like that, they were skeptical about it. The fbi says those types of things. Wallace has been at the front for a push for change in nascar, first by driving a black lives matter car and then asking nascar to ban the presence of confederate flags at races. The head of antiochs police union is reportedly in hot water after recent comment that he made on his personal facebook account. The post had to do with a meme that showed a protester giving the middle finger to a police officer. Now he replied, i firm ly beliee an openhanded slap to the face is 100 justified. He said it was taken out of context. Protesters, however, are calling for his resignation. A lot of great news as the county takes a big step in its reopening process. The total number of infections to more than 2,400 since the pandemic started. 62 people have died in Contra Costa County alone. Were at 60 in Half Moon Bay. San francisco reaching 66. 75 in oakland. But the inland valleys will not get that ocean breeze so were looking at some 90s in the trivalley. Yes, we saw that accusation in the case of michael flynn, the National Security adviser who admitted to talking to russians and then lying about it to the fbi. He admitted it. He was found guilty. He was sent to court. And then the doj said that it wanted to drop the charges. We may see it again with trump associate roger stone. One of the career officials set to testify today said in a written statement the prosecutors tried to cut stone a break, ease his sentence because he was the president s friend. Former prosecutor aaron szalinski will testify what i heard repeatedly roger stone was being treatedly from any other defendant because of his relationship to the president. Barr recommended stones sentence be reduced the same day President Trump said the same thing on twitter. The doj is supposed to be nonpolitical and independent of the president. Former prosecutor zelensky will be joined by current doj prosecutor john elias testifying today. Elias will testify we expect that barr ordered investigations into marijuana dispensaries because he did not like the pot industry. President trump inspected a new wall on the arizona mexico border and attended a rally in a closely packed church where he once again said people should not vote by mail. People went to the polls and voted during world war i. They went to safely go to the p and vote during covid19. Now, as you well know, the reason people were safely able to go to the polls in america in the First World War and the Second World War is the First World War and the Second World War were not fought in america. By the way, one of the states with the highest rates of vote by mail at 80 is arizona. Weve been talking about that. Weve also seen a lot of posts on social media about the saharan dust storm thats traveled across the atlantic making its way into texas and louisiana today. It really cuts down on the tropical activity but gives them a milky white sun rise and sunset and beautiful views especially early and late in the day. We are seeing that happening right now and so as that moves in people are talking about it because its unusually large and will last for a couple of days. So thats something were watching for those areas as it continues to travel through. Lets get back to the graphics and well see our temperatures that today will have a wide range in the bay area. Were going to see Half Moon Bay only up to 60 degrees today, but then you look at some of our inland, parts of the north bay where we reach over 100 degrees. Oakland today will reach into the mid70s. And livermore today reaching 93 degrees while san jose will be in the upper 80s. And as we go through the forecast, were looking at the High Pressure continuing to build, some hot weather inland but that ocean breeze that were going to see is not going to make it into the valleys until this week. Thats when well all have a cooldown and the cool air coming down from the north will also bring in a slight chance of some thunderstorms over the sierra. Here in the bay area were in for this hot inland weather for the next three days, and then the weekend is looking pretty nice. The mid80s for saturday. Lower 80s for sunday and thats the seasonable weather we should be seeing this time of year. It will be with us early next week. Mike, youve been watching the commute. How is it looking for drivers about to head out . Its looking great. We do see a little bit of slowing. We talk about 101 through san jose but this is right on pace. Even summertime build through Silicon Valley very light, just 101 up to 680. A little slowing out of the altamont and no major issues for the trivalley as folks are coming down through 84. The bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on, thats the only slowing from outside the maze to the bay bridge and were going to head it right back to laura with some breaking news. Schools in San Francisco will look different this fall, this is after San Francisco unified voted to end its relationship with police. All eyes on oakland unified as the school board also thinking about dismantling the police force. They are talking about a vote and right now the district employs ten officers but would replace them with nonuniform peace officers. The state superintendent will speak to reevaluate the role police should play on campuses throughout the state. Oakland is now the first bay area city to follow through on plans to redirect funding for police. Dissenting Councilmember Nikki portunato was tweeted the decision to cut 2. 5 million from opd and says its a slap in the face for those who sought much deeper cuts to funded and faulted the council not for not posting ahead of team. According to the press democrat councilmembers will continue that conversation today. Developing this Morning Union city police are investigating a possible hate crime. A resident there says that someone vandalized his car because he had a black lives matter sign in it. He says he has parked his car there for years without any problems.
