Well, a possible medical breakthrough in the fight against covid19, a 60yearold drug is showing promising results treating the most severely ill patients. Janelle joins us now with more on the latest results of this new study. Jessica, its a steroid drug called dexamethazone. Its cheap and been on the market for nearly six decades. This drug came out of oxford. The study actually came out of Oxford University today and found patients given the steroid had a better chance of surviving. For patients on ventilators, it cut the risk of death by a third. For those only on oxygen, it cut deaths by 1 5. This drug is thought to reduce inflammation by tempering down the excessive inflammatory reaction to the virus. Doctors in america are already using it and seeing positive results. I instituted the dexamethazone and within 48 hours i was able to wean the patient off sedatives and start to wean the patient from the ventilator. It was pretty dramatic. That was the most dramatic response ive had. Other responses in a couple of days to a week or two, the patient sees a pulmonary status improve. The steroid drug has been used for years for things like asthma, altitude sickness, some sk skin diseases and illnesses. I spoke with the former acting director of the cdc. He said while this is very exciting and hopeful news, just be cautious. Weve only seen a snippet of the study out of oxford today, not the full study, so we can remain hopeful, but we need to see more research and evidence if it really works and its really effective. I also talked to the former cdc director about whats the reality of a vaccine. Are we going to get one and when is it going to happen . I am going to speak to him. His interview coming up later on in the show. Raj and jessica . Janelle, thank you, good information. An update from the east bay, that confrontation over pride flags at a Farmers Market. The new fallout after this video went viral. Okay. Check it out. No stray cat. Ooh, big one. The unusual spot in San Francisco where a Mountain Lion turned up overnight. This was on russian hill. He followed the animal in his car before losing sight of it near greenwich and jones. An update now to a story we brought you last night. The association that manages livermores Farmers Market has quit after its director was shown on camera telling a vendor he cannot hand out pride flags. The pandemic has harmed the list is impossibly long in terms of the financial loss. Each one having to figure out how to handle their particular challenge. One south Bay High School band, its a job the director has taken on himself. Our Garvin Thomas joins us now with the story in our bay area proud. Reporter chris moore has been the band director at san joses Oak Grove High School for 25 years. Now, if that sounds like a long time, consider the fact his dad was a High School Band director for 42 years. Music programs are in his blood. And as we speak, fueling his legs. All right. Reporter chris morris says he solved many problems over the years as a band director. Not with a baton in his hand but with his bottom on a bicycle. Like, how am i going to get this to happen . How am i going to get that . What am i going to do with these people . On the bike. Reporter chris latest problem, though, his biggest one yet, is a little different. And hes not riding to think about it, hes riding to solve it. Its just something that i can do. Reporter chris came to oak grove in 1995. He and his late wife teresa built their band and color guard programs into champions. It came with a cost, though. Traveling, performing and competing requiring them to raise tens of thousands of dollars each and every year. When the coronavirus hit this year, well, their biggest fundraisers were among its victims. Which typically raised between 25,000 and 30,000. So were way behind. Reporter so chris, a lifelong cyclist, has taken it upon himself to make it up himself. And we are making our way to the start. Reporter he took off monday from his alma mater, ucla, headed for the oak grove campus. 420 miles over six days in order to raise money for the program. Its what i want to do. Its a program that my wife and i created. Reporter chris knows the program would recover eventually, no matter what he did, but for the students there now, eventually is just too late. Because they only get four years. To do what they want to do. Reporter and should the heat or the headwinds feel like too much, chris says he just has to think of who this is really for. I put myself in their position and i just keep turning the pedals. Reporter in san jose, Garvin Thomas, nbc bay area news. Thats a beautiful ride for such a good cause. Oak grove high school, if you can, donate there to the marching band. Nice story, jessica. Yeah, lets take you jute side to a live pic of walnut creek. It looks beautiful outside. Jeff ranieri joins us now. Really beautiful blue skies. Hey, it is. And, you know, today hopefully you did get a few minutes outside. I know i did. It made all of the difference. Today is going to be the most comfortable day. Before we really start to see things heat up for us. Even that fire danger increase. Lets bridge yng you outside to south bay. If youve been working from home at the desk, check this shot out. Also lots of blue sky. You can see the traffic pattern down there in the midpart of the screen as well, a lot more traffic than weve been used to over the past couple of weeks. Currently at 73 degrees. Very, very nice. And well be down into some cooler 60s here once we hit 8 00 and also 9 00 tonight. Now, as we move through tomorrow morning, i do see a really beautiful beginning here for us. Its going to be a little bit warmer than weve been used to but not uncomfortable. 69 in the trivalley peninsula at 67 and the south bay at 68. But you know when you start off this mild in the bay area for the morning, its going to be a hot day for us. 68 in the north bay. San francisco, 66. And the east bay at 69. So the main thing ive been telling you about thats going to help to increase this heat is this hot area of High Pressure. So wherever High Pressure moves this time of the year it tends to take all of that heat with it. Its some dry, sinking air. And the way this is setting up, its also going to be driving in these dryer northerly winds down across the bay area. So our fire dangers also going to increase as well. So lets take you down closer to that. I think the strongest gusts will be up towards santa rosa, napa and concord. Anywhere from 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour coming out of the north. So that will lower our humidity down to 10 and 20 . So, again, the wind kicking up and a big, big increase. Look at my forecast down here in the south bay. Instead of those comfortable mid70s, were back up to 88 in downtown san jose. Gilroy at 90. Hottest location right here in the east bay where i have some mid90s for us tomorrow. In danville, 94, pittsburg, 95, antioch, 94 and livermore at 91. 86 here in palo alto. And then San Francisco, a split picture here. Right up against the coastline, that strong ocean breeze and 63 in the marina. Headed downtown, we are at 74 in the embarcadero, 76 in the mission. The north bay, 92 in napa, 85 in mill valley, 91 in ukiah. My extended forecast 70s through friday and the weekend. Dry over the next seven days. And right here for the inland valleys hottest will be the next two days with on and off wind gusts 10 to about 30 Miles Per Hour. Then for the weekend it drops off a little bit but not a whole lot. By early next week well have some 80s. So an early welcome to summer. Summer officially arrives on saturday, but the sevenday sure is looking like that summer heat is definitely here to stay after some cooler weather most recently. So i guess its time to get adjusted to this right now. Some like it hot. Thank you, jeff. Yeah, they do. Coming up, will there ever be a vaccine for the coronavirus .
