policies allowing others to call for violence and not masking them. few people seem to actually actually cross posts his twitter stuff over to facebook so the same stuff is running on facebook including that shooting and looting message, but facebook didn't mask it. that led to a facebook walkout yesterday, execs and employees leaving the job. now it's a virtual walkout because they weren't at the office to begin with. they're working from home because of the other crisis, the pandemic. facebook's mark zuckerberg talking with civil rights leaders and activists. they say they walked away think about it and i don't remember when but i know even before then i understood racism. i understood there were certain people who didn't like me and my family because of our skin color. i knew that. i don't remember when, i don't remember that first moment, but early in my life i understood that. that's the reality. it's very diverse. the most diverse place i've lived in my life. for a lot of kids growing up here they don't understand because it is diverse and very inclusive. in other parts of the country it's not that way. >> we have to educate the kids who don't experience it, too. the kids who don't know that is the reality. that doesn't make any sense. racism is taught, right? >> kari, i hope it's okay, but for folks who don't know, you have a young son who will be a scientist. he had that rocket on tv over the weekend. he's young. have you experienced this? >> he's young and doesn't quite understand things, yeah, because he has autism. he doesn't understand what's going on in the world. that also makes him more of a target for those misunderstandings that happen with police officers because he doesn't quite get it. so it's going to be a really hard discussion to have but i know i have to have ts had it w brother and he was shot by a police officer trying to scare him. i've experienced it. those roots go way deep especially when you're raised in the south. >> it's in the fabric of our country and we have to realize that and move beyond that. challenge everyone to watch this documentary called eyes on the prize, a documentary that follows more so the civil rights movement. it's a tough one to watch but i tell you if you watch it you understand why so many people are angry because what's happened in the last five years is not new to a lot of people. just now we see it. it's caught on video. that's why a lot of people are expressing the way we are. we have to understand that. i'm not saying that everything is right what people are doing. harm is not something that we should put upon anybody, but we have to understand where all of this comes from so we can get to the root of it and really fix the problem because s >> yeah. growth and inland temperatures and upper 90s as we look at the inland east bay as well as the north bay, san jose will reach up to 94 degrees today, but we're keeping it cool in san francisco. we are going to see some intense heat spiking over the next couple of days. as we get closer to the weekend we are going to see cooler air starting to come in and we're going to have scattered showers in the forecast as we head to sunday but it looks like that rain chance mostly stays to the north of us. our temperature is going up and back down. we reach up to 100 degrees for tomorrow for the inland areas, but then we come back to the 70s for the weekend. mike, you were tracking a traffic alert. is that still going on? good, you used the past tense. it's going to have good recovery. i just got word that all lanes cleared just a minute or so ago as we look at southbound 880. most of the bay looks great for a tuesday which we typically expect to have more traffic. we're looking at a smooth drive, again, the crash has just cleared all lanes at alvarado niles. the angle is bad from our camera but you see a buildup happening. no metering lights but we do have the backup building at the toll plaza right jeopardy after missing another deadline. you might remember governor newsom made a deal with a chinese manufacturer for 200 million n95 masks for first responders. last month the mask maker was unable "today in the bay" continues right now. and it is 6:30 for you this morning. thanks for sarti instarting youg with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. we'll talk with mike about traffic starting to build. kari, your seven-day forecast, you have to see this because it looks like maybe there's a typo. it's so dramatic. all the way up and back down. some heat building across the bay area. as we get a look at mountain view and our temperature trend ome of our it's going to start inland east bay communities are going to be much hotter this afternoon as we head into the upper 90s today. all bets are off today. it gets even hotter tomorrow. we'll talk more about this in the weekend cooldown coming up. mike, you are looking at a couple issues out there. we look at the nimitz and zoom in to this portion right here just past 92. some recovery is necessary, hayward in to union city and out at the live picture of the bay bridge toll plaza the metering light at 6:20 just as they were reading the headlines, you'll be slow out of oakland. back to you. a dangerous night in vallejo as authorities try to chase down a lotting suspect at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. in one of those cases officers opened fire. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us outside of that walgreens in vallejo. bob, what are like the investig is cleared up. >> reporter: the officers are removing the crime scene tape. the shooting happened at the drive-through of this walgreens at broadway and redwood in vallejo. police pretty much have wrapped up and collected their evidence. this hammed around 12:30 this morning. we believe there was a suspect who was looting the store, this walgreens, was confronted by police. the suspect then rammed an unmarked police vehicle, was shot at by an officer and then sped off. the condition of the officer who was rammed, we don't know their condition, but we believe they're okay. there was a chase. the suspect was caught and placed in an ambulance in the city of rodeo. it's not clear if that person was hit by the police gunshots on if they were being transported for some sort of other injury. their condition is unknown. just down the street from us law enforcement chased two other looting suspects. they hit speeds of 100 miles an hour. this is video i captured as they were blasting out of vallejo. the chase ended up coming back through vallejo south into contra costa county. both men are in custody. they had broken into a store that sells ball caps and other sporting apparel. this happened right in front of the security guards >> they didn't care that we were here, went about their business. they didn't feel threatened at all. >> he chased them off. he got real close to them. >> i ain't a superhero. >> reporter: he's your buddy, right? >> yeah, yeah. >> reporter: and not far from there law enforcement overnight arrested three other people for looting, the safeway here in vallejo. they had smashed the front doors of that grocery store. it appears they were trying to make off with a case of bud light when they were caught. vallejo did and does have a curfew in effect from 8:00 last night until 5:00 in the morning. we heard from the public informations officer and said thriot related activity from th overnight. >> certainly a busy night there. thank you, bob. following breaking news in las vegas now where at least one officer was shot during a protest during the strip and is said to be on life support right now. the responding officers did arrest the suspect. police say this started when someone fired in the midst of a large protest. there were people that were throwing rocks and other things at officers before the shooting. police are also investigating a separate officer involved shooting at a federal courthouse n. th . in that case the suspect is dead. curfews over this morning and all of those bay area major cities, well, they all have one in place. many of the curfews are already extended through at least the rest of the week. more than 100 people were arrested in alameda county last night after the curfews there took effect. about 80 of those people were arrested in oakland where nobody is supposed to be out on the streets past 8:00 at night. most of the people were gathered downtown at broadway and 14th. some protesters tried to assault officers when they were told to move on because it was past fur tu. curfew. >> after 8:00 p.m. officers were having rocks and bottles thrown at them, assaults against officers. we announced multiple times unlawful assembly. >> the number of arrests represents just a tiny fraction of all the people protesting in oakland yesterday. you saw the crowd shots. we estimate about 15,000 people there. the group ended up outside oakland city hall. from there a splinter group then went off their own way toward police headquarters only to be driven back by flash bangs and tear gas. in the south bay the damage from looting and destruction is said to be in the millions of dollars. and there's still a lot of cleanup under way. "today in the bay's" thom jensen joins us live from san jose with the council which could vote to maybe even extend the curfew order. tom? >> reporter: police officers have been patrolling the streets and able to keep people off the streets to abide by the curfew order that's been in place here since all that violence erupted over the weekend. 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. that curfew is in place. not seeing the violence. some protesters think the curfews are aimed at them. free speech and assembly rights. it was a weeklong order that had a caveat of being in place until further notice as city officials try to gauge the temperament of the looters and others distracting from the real purpose of the protests. >> i know they announced it as a seven-day order. i would be surprised if it lasts seven days. i expect fully that we'll lift it as soon as we have a sense that things have really calmed down. >> reporter: as you've seen curfew violators have been arrested in locations. but for the most part the looting and vandalism that forced the hands of community leaders really to enact curfews has mostly ended, and it's not just here in san jose today where city officials are going to be deciding whether or not to lift or keep the curfew orders in place. also contra costa county at 9:30 this morning making that same decision, whether or not to keep curfews in place to keep the peace. we're live in san jose, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thom, thank you. san jose leaders may be ready to require masks in all public settings. the council this afternoon are scheduled to vote on that proposal. currently a mask is only required if you expect to be within six feet of another person inside or even outside a business or office. the council considering amending its pandemic relief fund and providing additional eviction protection for renters. 6:39 for you that morning. let's get a look at the forecast for you. a lot of people heading outside maybe for a nice walk. kari, it will be a nice one. a little warm but nice. yes, it's going to start to heat up today. if you are going out for a walk try to get in that walk. we're starting out with a clear sun rise and already warming temperatures for the bay area. we'll start out with some low 60s but then we see it at 70 degrees at 9:00 and then in the upper 80s by early in the afternoon. we're going to make it up to 96 degrees today in livermore and 98 degrees in concord. santa rosa today reaching 93 degrees. and tomorrow our temperatures peak and get even hotter. i'll have more of that in the forecast coming up. mike, you've been watching the roads and a couple slow spots. >> it's interesting, kari. usually tuesday has a heavy volume of traffic than monday. it's opposite today. i don't know if the curfew has kept some folks home and rearranging their schedules. the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on, turned on just before 6:30 this morning, and there's the backup. we are looking at the map because there's also in the slower drive approaching san francisco there's a disabled vehicle out of treasure island there as well. you notice the rest of contra costa county and the approach to the bay bridge is just fine. rekof recovery for south 880 a crash at alvarado niles but that did clear. the rest of the bay shows a smoother drive. the altamont is slow but not as bad as yesterday. family is god fearing. we're not going to take it. >> terrence floyd's visit happened the same day an independent autopsy report came out indicating that george floyd, his brother, died from asphyxiation. that report differs from the official conclusion made by the coroner there. just about 15 minutes on the "today" show the floyd family attorney will talk about that just released report that's at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." in the wake of george floyd's death and the nationwide protest two black mothers who lost their sons in high-profile cases are speaking out on "today." the mother of eric gardner and stephon clark say they're still fighting for justice. here is eric gardner's mother. >> there are so many of us out there. my son and george, we were caught on camera. there were things that never got caught on camera that no one ever saw and they're out there in the streets saying give us justice because we had none. >> you can see that full interview on the "today" show right here on nbc bay area right after "today in the bay." and as the nation grapples with how to end violence and reform law enforcement, leaders are considering changes. supervisors planning to look at sfpd's hiring process. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live for us at san francisco city hall, and, sharon, i know this was all prompted by the protests we're seeing here in the bay area. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. when i covered the protests here yesterday, the one main thing i kept hearing over and over again from the protesters they want to see real solutions, real change. i spoke to a reverend who said this change needs to be made by community leaders, and that's what is happening today with the board of supervisors. san francisco supervisor shamann walton says holding officers accountable when they break the rules will lead to change. walton is introducing a resolution today urging the board to support legislation preventing sfpd from hiring officers from other departments with a record of excessive force. actor jamie foxx was at the protest here at city hall yesterday. he also spoke out against police brutality. >> really fight for prosecution and incarceration when our young people, our black people, our people of color, our people are killed by law enforcement. >> there has to be a deterrent. >> right? >> if that man can be happenndcd and that man can sit on his neck for that long and feel comfortable about it, that means he's not afraid of what's going to happen. we have to change the language. ds sayinger: foxx had a message it's not enough to tweet or text. you have to get out here. now the public defender is also speaking out against police brutality. he's saying change the policies and especially don't use a knee on the neck or the head when someone is on the ground. reporting live in san francisco, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> all right, sharon, thank you. decision 2020, today a big day for joe biden. already trying to connect with american mayors on the front lines of two major crises, the pandemic and protests. he spoke with them during a virtual roundtable. >> protesting is a natural american response to injustice but burning down communities is not and violence that endangers lives is not. >> seven states and the district of columbia hold primaries today with 479 democratic delegates up for grabs. meantime a new "washington post" poll shows that biden leading president trump by ten percentage points among likely voters. president trump stood outside a church holding a bible for a few moments in what is now a controversial photo-op. >> now to get him there, scott, police had to clear out lafayette park. this is across from the white house. that's right. and it was full of peaceful protests and they were there before the curfew had ended and yet those protesters faced rubber bullets, they faced flash bangs as well as park police and others cleared the way so the president could walk over to the church. nbc has talked with white house insiders who say president trump was upset at reports he spent friday night in a bunker and wanted to show a tougher side, so he walked over to st. john's episcopal church, which has been home of many presidents, president george w. bush attended every sunday. it was attacked by violent protesters the night before. mr. trump stood outside, hoisted a bible -- now this came just minutes after he called for a tougher stance in a speech in the rose garden with a thump of flash bangs in the background. >> all americans were rightly sickened and revolted by the brutal death of george floyd. my administration is fully committed that for george and his familyce will be served, he will not have died in vain. >> the presiding bishop of washington, d.c., says she and the church were not informed of the visit ahead of time and reacted angrily. she said tonight the president used a bible and a church of my diocese as a backdrop for a message antithetical to the teachings of jesus and everything our church stands for. to do so he sanctioned the use of tear gas by police officers in riot gear to clear our church yard. the head of the entire episcopal church in america also reacting. you may recall michael curry from the homily delivered at the royal wedding of harry and meghan. the presiding bishop and highest official of the church said the church was used for political purposes and that the president made no attempt to help or heal. now the most recent visit was exactly a year ago when he stopped by the mclean bible church after a golf game. there, too, he was accused of doing that for a photo-op. we're watching what's happening in washington, of course, and tweeting about it. you can find me on twitter. i'm@scottmcgrew. at 6:50 as we head out on this tuesday morning we are getting ready for a hotter day as we take a live look outside in dublin. we'll quickly make it into the low 90s. check out the seven-day forecast up on the bottom of the screen. it will get really hot and much cooler for the weekend. 96 degrees in concord. 96 degrees in napa. the intense heat tomorrow comes down as we get closer tovi in. a chance of showers as we head to sunday, but it as of right now a lot of the rain stays farther to the north. the north bay will have a slight chance of some of the rain moving in. so our seven-day forecast goes like this. we have some 90s today. 100 tomorrow. we come back to the 90s on thursday and then the 70s for the weekend. so some big temperature swings here but it will also be quite windy this weekend along with that cooler air. i'll be watching all of this for you and, mike, you've been watching the roads. what's the update for the commute? it's calm for a tuesday. i expected more. we're looking at slowing across the bay bridge and the metering lights on at the toll plaza. and it's because of the volume coming in out of contra costa county and the maze. as we look at it we do see, though, the fastrak lanes are moving very well. getting into san francisco move much more smoothly than it was just 20 minutes ago. anu
