and it continues to heat up as we reach into the upper 90s here. it's going to be a big change n the esterday, and it gets even microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. and mike gives us a look at the early morning commute. kari, we'll go past your 90 geographically speaking. the big view shows what you would expect lighter traffic except for right at the altamont and grant line road things loosen up once again but the build is on there. not a build for the north bay but coming down to martinez across the carquinez bridge west 80 at american canyon there are reports of boxes in the roadway right now. your left two lanes may be a factor. so far no slowing and no traffic break. the roadways are light in construction. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. breaking overnight in vallejo, authorities shot at someone. this is after reports of looting at walgreens and "today in the bay's" bob redell is live there at the scene. so, bob, do we know yet if -- when the officers opened fire, did they hit anyone? >> reporter: that part is not clear yet, marcus. we do believe the person who was looting this walgreens here at redwood and broadway in vallejo was confronted by this police officer. the suspect then tried to ram -- or actually not tried to but rammed the officer's unmarked vehicle. not clear if the officer was hurt during that. we do know the officer according to pd did open fire at the suspect. the suspect sped off. there was a chase. the suspect was caught and placed in an ambulance in rodeo. you can see at pacific avenue and san pablo avenue. it's not clear if that person was hit by the police gunshots or hurt in some other manner. their condition is unknown. now just down the street from this walgreens, this was a few hours ago, law enforcement chased two other looting suspects, hit speeds of 100 miles an hour, went north towards american canyon, back through vallejo. south into coco county. the suspects overturned a couple miles west of the coming skyway. both men are in custody. they broke into a store here that sells ball caps and other sporting apparel. this happened right in front of a security guard who was patrolling the strip mall where the store is located. >> they didn't care that we were here. stuff started happening and they went about their business. they didn't feel threatened at all. jay chased them off, got real close to them. >> superhero. >> reporter: he's your buddy. law enforcement arrested three other people here in vallejo. they smashed the front door of the grocery store. it appears they were trying to make off with a case of bud light when they were caught. vallejo does have a curfew or did, i should say, in effect from 8:00 last night until 5:00 this morning. we've only seen a couple instances of looting. vallejo police tell us they have reports of dozens of riot-related criminal activity. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> certainly an eventful night. thank you. overnight curfews just wrapping up for some of the dozen or so bay area cities that have them in place. most run from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and all extended at least through the end of this week. last night police in oakland and san francisco made good on promises to crack down on anyone violating that order. sfpd arrested protesters outside of the city hall last night. no word on the exact number this morning. meanwhile oakland police arrested 100 people, 80, for curfew and similar violations. overnight thousands of demonstrators gathered for a peaceful protest in downtown portland and, meanwhile, most protests were peaceful mostly in new york city but there were still some reports of looting. vandals smashed the windows of some stores there and businesses were cleaned out as well because of that looting. protesters in providence, rhode island, also set fires. president trump is now threatening to call in the military. of course that brings a lot of pushback. chris pollone joins us live with that part of the story. >> reporter: kris, and that's not all that has democrats and some members of the clergy criticizing the president's actions this morning. they say federal police and national guard troops used tear gas and rubber bullets on peaceful protesters just so the president could hold a photo-op across from the white house. federal officers and national guard troops suddenly moved on peaceful protesters hitting them with flash grenades and tear gas while shooting rubber bullets. then moments later another extraordinary scene. the president, cabinet members and episcopal church that had been vandalized the night before. early this morning a twitter account posted a campaign-style video of the visit showing mr. trump holding a bible in front of st. john's church. the two top democrats in congress called the president's actions cowardly, weak, and dangerous. >> the president just used a bible and sacred text and one of the churches of my diocese without permission as a backdrop for a message. >> reporter: it happened moments after mr. trump delivered his first formal statement following the death of george floyd a week ago. >> i am your president of law and order and an ally of all peaceful protesters. >> warning he'll invoke the insurrection act. >> if a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the united states military and quickly solve the problem for them. >> reporter: federal military police are en route to washington, d.c., as the capital emerges from the fourth straight night of protests. chris poe lean, nbc. as the nation grapples with how to end the unrest and reform law enforcement, san francisco leaders are already considering changes. supervisors plan to look at sfpd's hiring process. sharon katsuda is live at city hall. sharon, i know this was all prompted by those protests. >> reporter: that's right. i was here yesterday where they had a peaceful kneel-in for george floyd. a resident said there needs to be change through community leaders. supervisor walton says holding officers accountable when they break the rules will lead to change and is offering a resolution today urging the board to support legislation preventing sfpd from hiring officers from other departments with a record of excessive force. actor jamie foxx was here yesterday and echoed the same concerns. >> fight for incarcerations and prosecution when our people are killed by law enforcement. >> there has to be a deterrent. if that man can be handcuffed and that man can sit on that man's neck for that long and feel comfortable it, that means he's not afraid of what's going to happen. we have to change the language. >> reporter: foxx also had a message for his hollywood friends. he said it's not enough to tweet or text. you've got to get out here. a board committee yesterday also voted 2-1 against mayor london breed's two appointments saying given the recent developments showing outrage within the community they need to appoint more people who are from the community and know how to make systemic change. the d.a. is pushing for reform, so this is all in reaction to what's going on throughout the nation and here at home. back to you. across our digital platforms we have complete coverage of the protests and where we go from here to there and relaxing. >> everybody is waiting for that and they'll be very happy to come and enjoy the patio. >> a supervisor says he expects more restrictions will be lifted after another two weeks if the numbers remain flat. san francisco is trying to make it easier for renters just trying to make it in the bay. supervisors are holding an emergency vote to boost renter protections. it includes bridge and how things are shaping up this morning coming up. and good morning and a very happy tuesday to you. twitter has masked the tweet of another politician, matt getz of florida. could the american government hunt them down like we do terrorists overseas? that was too much for twitter which put the gray mask over the tweet. you recall twitter put masks over the president's tweets about when the looting starts, the shooting starts. some are pointing out twitter seems to be inconsistent with policies allowing others to call for violence as not masking those. few people seem to notice but president trump actually cross posts his tweets over to facebook and facebook let the shooting and looting post stand, that led a number of facebook employees and execs to hold a walkout, a virtual walkout because they're working from home because of the pandemic. facebook's mark zuckerberg talked with civil rights activists and leaders and those leaders say they walked away will cut employees, about 1,800 of them. correction, 1,400 of them, in california. marcus and laura, they said they would hire in other cities, lower cost cities like austin. i think, again, this is what we're seeing of this idea if you can work from home, people will leave the bay area, go to other places less crowded, less expensive and get hired there. >> if you're going to work from home you don't need a new outfit every day. you can wear the same yoga pants. >> sweatpants, yeah. >> talking about moving away and working from home. >> i don't need a stylist for that. essential workers are exempt from many of the curfew orders that we have in place in many of our communities around the bay area. if you are an essential worker and you use ride share to get to work you might need to make other plans. lyft sent a message to drivers saying no ride requests will be allowed during the curfew. uber is suspending service in oakland and san francisco between curfew hours with the s. by the while? >> i understood because my grandfather -- >> you probably already felt it, though? >> i felt it in a sense, but, i mean, i'm still a child at that time. then you hear the stories of what may happen. when i got my license, conversations had in my home about what to happen if you're pulled over. those are realities that i still hold today at 40. and i have a lot of friends who are having those conversations with their kids. we're going to have that conversation here on "today in the bay" later this week. stick around for that. it is a hard conversation for parents to have. >> thank you. >> but we will have that conversation. >> especially when you have children who maybe are fortunate they haven't experienced it firsthand, so, why would anybody treat anybody different and don't realize it. >> kris, that's the question a lot of people ask, why? my friend has a nephew in college and he said, uncle tim, why don't they like us? that's a hard reality. >> it doesn't make any well enough to understand what your wealth is really for. we've seen a lot of images of the protests, most of them largely peaceful. huge groups of people. of course in some cases those peaceful protests have given way to vandalism and looting. in san francisco new measures to stop that from happening. the city now called in hundreds of national guard members to protect local businesses which has not happened since the rodney king riots back in 1992. mayor eric garcetti and the police chief both say it's to allow police officers to focus on keeping the streets safe. l.a.'s chief also landed in hot water when he tried to lay some of the blame for george floyd's death on the looters. a short time later he clarified his comments and said suggesting that the action of looters do not serve the enormity of floyd's death. we've been seeing a lot of touching moments on camera between people showing support during the nationwide protest. in an "l.a. times" report, a reporter there marcus, was put into place on sunday could be extended or lifted later on today by city councilmembers deciding whether or not to keep this curfew in place, this overnight curfew, after all the damage here. a lot more than just a distraction although it is a distraction from the real meaning of the protest exposing police brutality and racism. the city and county of santa clara decided to declare a state of emergency. they said there would be an overnight curfew in place until further notice. city council here in san jose will decide whether to keep the 8:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew in place for at least a full seven days. some protesters saying they understand the need for the rules to end the violence but others say it stops them from exercising free speech and assembly. >> this curfew is to keep people from fighting for their rights. that's it. we have a right as americans to protest. >> would i like it to be seven days? no. >> reporter: it will be up to the city council to determine if curfew will as they do later on today, we're hearing about contra costa county at 9:30 this morning deciding whether also to extend curfews for at least a week. once again that decision coming up number in concord where we may set a new record for today and then the bad news it's not even the hottest day. it will be even hotter tomorrow, but i also have good news in the forecast because we will have a cooldown coming our way by this weekend. i'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes and, mike, you give us a look at how it's going for the morning commute. we had a pretty good build as far as the altamont goes. look at your maps, slowing of the altamont, slowing for 84 and for hayward coming down to the san mateo bridge but then just past that where we have a new crash and vehicles, i'm told, are in the fast lane as well as your middle lane and there are folks that are squeezing between all of those causing slowing. we'll track that. a live look does not show much of a
