Now that restrictions are lifting she says its no surprise that the numbers are increasing. We talked to one man who knows about that firsthand. He believes he got the virus in new orleans while celebrating his mothers 95th birthday. I didnt know it but i was getting shorter of breath. So my wife called the bishop and he said call the ambulance. Reporter he spent a month in the hospital. Most of his stay on a ventilator. Its horrible. Its horrible. As you can see, there has been a surge in Alameda County, surpassing Santa Clara County, becoming the hot spot in the bay area. Parts of oerkland and hayward reporting the most cases. Coronavirus testing started in hayward, reaching a milestone today. 10,000 people now know if they have it or not. How are we going to beat this . Its testing and sheltering in place. Alameda county, weve been talking a lot about it, 63 new cases since yesterday. San mateo county reporting 59 new cases in the past 24 hours. And Santa Clara County 15 new cases. Overall in the bay area we have now surpasses 13,000 cases statewide. You can see the number there, more than 100,000. Lets talk about the heat. Another scorcher of the day and another warm night. For the northeast and south bay. Those inland valleys where we still will range in the mid 90s. Could have a few temperatures right around 100. But the changes are starting. Thats at this hour compared to this time yesterday. So the bottom line tomorrow morning we begin with some 60s and by the afternoon not quite as hot with low and mid 90s. Well, weve been following this breaking news through the night. Violent protests in the streets of minneapolis. Hundreds of people demanding justice for george floyd. The crowd reportedly at times threw rocks and bottles at police, who then used their rubber bullets and tear gas. Several businesses were also looted and damaged. At one point you can see the crowd there surrounding that chp cruiser, who then sped away with some people right there on the hood. All this in response to the death of george floyd. He died monday after a White Minneapolis Police officer pinned him to the ground and put his knee on floyds neck for almost eight minutes. You can hear floyd pleading, saying i cant breathe. The citys mayor is calling for that officer to be criminally charged. All four officers involved in the incident were fired. Well, tired of waiting and worried about losing everything, a brewery in pacifica opened its patio to diners tonight even though thats a violation of San Mateo Countys health order. As nbc bay areas jean elle reports, it is a risk the owners say they are willing to take. Reporter Keith Cochran toasts a friend from a safe distance on the patio at the pacifica brewery. Its just to be outside and enjoy something normal. Reporter the owners of the brewery opened the outdoor area today despite San Mateo Countys health order that only allows takeout at restaurants. Were very safe. They come up to the front, they have ordered their food to go, and we will let them sit out back socially distancing. Reporter helen nasserelddin says after more than two months she needs to reopen. She has beer thats going to spoil and bills she cant pay. Its so scary, our livelihoods at stake. We put everything in here, and we just want to be able to follow the guidelines and reopen our outdoor space. Reporter word about the opening trickled out to the dinner crowd. Not everyone who got food to go took a seat, but people who did say it feels safe. Personally, im not scared or afraid or anything because it is social distanced out here. Everyones six feet apart. Like all the servers and people, theyre wearing gloves and masks. Reporter the pacifica brewery is under San Mateo Countys health order, which does not allow outdoor dining. County Health Officials say one of the criteria for reopening restaurants is less than 25 new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in two weeks. Right now San Mateo County is seeing an average of 55. But this Restaurant Owner says she cant afford to wait any longer. I definitely feel like they should be allowed. Reporter while some customers are ready to enjoy the patio here at the pacifica brewery it is taking a risk. Violating that order could land them with a citation. A citation that could come with jail time and a possible 1,000 fine. In Pacifica Jean elle, nbc bay area news. A lot of businesses are in a tough spot. Thank you, jean. Well, she was the first person in the country to order a shelter at home for this pandemic. Now shes reminding everyone not to reopen too soon. Today Santa Clara Countys public Health Officer, dr. Sara cody, expressed concerns that the state is not waiting two to three weeks in between reopening different business sectors. She said the state should pause to see how the virus reacts to the different stages of reopening. If we make a change and then we dont pause and wait to see what the impact has been, then we are blind. We cant we cant see what our next what our next action may do. Dr. Cody says thats why Santa Clara County has reopened more slowly than the rest of the state, and she isnt alone. Sonoma county will now slow down its reopening efforts after a rise in cases and hospitalizations. Okay. Let the cutting and the coloring begin. Tonight a celebration at Solano County hair salons as the word gets around that they are cleared and open for business for the first time in two months. Twitter added this fact check on a tweeted, a link that brings people to a fact check article from cnn and the Washington Post. It is part of twitters new policy to crack down on misinformation that comes from world leaders. Today, though, the president tweeted that social media platforms are silencing conservative voices. And he went on to threaten strongly regulate or close down. Later in the day he added big action to follow. The state superintendent of schools released his plans today and for many students it looks familiar. Classwork from home. And in order to maintain those smaller classrooms the state superintendent says they need more computers and in order for that to happen theyre going to need some help from companies, foundations, and private individuals. Right now the current bart police force includes 170 officers. Meanwhile, the agency is still doing all it can to win back passengers. And plenty of Hand Sanitizer for all trains. Not all riders, though, say theyre even remotely ready to get on boorpd.
