start out at 8:00 at about 60 degrees. from 60 to 83 as we go into the rest of the day. our temperatures will be peaking in the upper 80s in a few spots. even hotter as we get into tomorrow. i'll show you our micro climates coming up. firefighters still at the scene of a brush fire that briefly threatened homes in eastern contra costa county. it started a little before 2:00 on marsh creek road. this is video into our newsroom. it burned about five acres before firefighters got it under control. no word yet on a cause. now to a live look at capitol hill. president trump confirms the white house coronavirus task force will be disbanded in the coming weeks. he's also standing by his position to reopen the country as soon as possible despite the risk of more death and as the government about the whistle-blower complaint and you will hear from the person who made it, but first president trump's overnight interview where he says this is taking a personal toll. despite over 70,000 deaths and climbing from coronavirus, he's about to disband his team of experts at the white house. >> american medical workers -- >> reporter: the coronavirus task force is disbanding acco according to the vice president around the end of the month. >> mike pence and the task force have done a great job. we're looking at a different forum and that's safety and opening. >> reporter: in an abc than me. >> reporter: daily deaths could double by june 1st, do not account for mitigation. a government scientist is speaking out in a whistle-blower complaint saying he was forced out of his job overseeing vaccine development because he resisted efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs. >> time after time i was pressured to ignore or dismiss scientific recommendation and instead award lucrative contracts based on political connections. in other words, i was pressured to let politics and croneyism drive decisions. >> reporter: he's expected to testify before congress. >> we'll be eager to hear the testimony that is presented. but the last thing we need is political interference into science. >> reporter: in a statement health and human services says they're deeply disappointed dr. bright has not shown up to the job he was re-assigned to. in fact, his attorneys say that he's having some health problems as a r meantime, president dr. anthony fauci talk to republicans but not coronavirus numbers across the bay area. we're just shy of 9,000 reported cases. there are now 328 deaths. 6:05 this morning and we are getting a clearer picture of what life will look like as shelter at home orders loosen. that's where we find kris sanchez joining us live this morning. a change is coming, kris. >> reporter: this reopened for business yesterday. it was able to reopen because it has ample room for social distancing. we know a lot of other businesses will reopen in phase two which is coming on friday and a lot of our bay area s retail will be able to reopen with social distancing and mask requirements. this morning on the "today" show the managing director of the war memorial and performing arts center talks about what the new normal will look like there. >> i need to make sure all the patrons are spaced out by six feet. you have this lineup that we want to keep socially distanced like at a grocery store. >> reporter: santa clara county's public health director says some restrictions could remain in place because in this county there is not a 30-day supply of ppe for health care workers in the event of a spike in cases. contra costa county is taking a wait-and-see approach while sonoma and marin consider opening up retail for curbside pickup. governor gavin newsom will unveil specifics tomorrow related to those phase two openings on friday, but he has also said that counties can enact or retain restrictions ar. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." businesses in sacramento are itching to reopen. some places like flower shops are ramping up safety precautions just in time for mother's day. many nonessential stores have turned to curbside pickup to keep business going. workers at one sacramento shoe store plan to be flexible with customers but say they are planning to follow all safety precautions. >> we'll be taking employee temperatures as they come in. we're going to require masks of all employees as well as customers entering the store. >> health leaders say a second phase may happen as soon as next week. >> the bay area is inching back to some kind of new reality with a number of outdoor activities. sea trek kayak rental in sausalito is open after being shut down for six weeks and there are new rules like limiting the number of kayakers per all that equipment after every use and reservations available only online. >> it's going to be really nice, it's mother's day. we just don't want to create a scenario we're going to get overrun. we're going to close early on saturday and sunday to preempt that. >> in the meantime tennis so far is no match for the virus. only contra costa county is back in the swing of things. five more counties may allow it by friday without the use of water coolers or benches. we know it's mother's day on sunday. things are heating up. is the heat going to stick around for mother's day as well? no, it's good that we get this heat for a little while and then it goes away. we're not going to see this hot weather lasting for any more than about three days. as we look at how that compares to normal, we normally reach up to 72, a high of 84. for napa a high of 85 today and normal there is about 72 degrees. as you head down to livermore, 84, san jose reaching into the low 80s today. all of this well above normal. there may be some new records set. i'll talk about how hot it gets, you've been watching a traffic alert and that's now in the south bay, right? >> that's right. it's in the south bay. if you have been following us all morning a continuing issue. we just got the update that lanes have now cleared. green everywhere except for into santa clara. quick recovery as far as the traffic goes. all four lanes are now open at san tomas expressway. a pedestrian was reported hit and killed there. the coroner was called to the scene early and, again, all lanes are now clear, north 101. still clear heading up to lawrence expressway. a busy morning, thank you, mike. you as well. i have a ton of bad news on job losses this morning. adp, which is the company that handles payroll and payroll checking, that kind of thing for companies, has told us 20 million workers were cut in the month of april according to their data, the biggest cut adp has ever seen. by comparison, and i think it will take your breath away. the worst month during the great recession of 2009, fewer than a million workers lost their jobs in a single month. in this situation we're talking about 20 million workers in april. just a few seconds ago word uber will cut 3,700 jobs. to that you can add almost 2,000 jobs at san francisco's airbnb. very few people traveling, of course. that's left the staff there with very little to do. airbnb cutting a quarter of its employees. we may be in lockdown but the laws will apply. the state's attorney general says uber and lyft are not following ab-5. xavier becerra, along with a group of california cities, suing the ride share companies, accusing them of ignoring a new law that requires them to classify as employees and not contractors. the difference gives drivers rights and privileges. this will be the first test of this law. uber said they need to make it easier to find work. elon musk said his workers need to get back to work. he's on the cusp of a huge payout. worked out one of the most lucrative in history. musk has hit the targets he needs to hit to get a $706 million payout. musk did not create tesla but did make it the most popular electric car company in the world. he has tweeted out pictures of his new son. he and do to appreciate those working hard during this time. as we take a look at our live view in the berkeley hills looking over toward the richmond heights area. it's a clear start to the day. as we start out with our temperature trend in mountain view, we do have the cool temperatures as most of us have started out in the mid-50s and then we see our trend here making it into the low 70s as we go into the afternoon. very nice but warmer than yesterday. the trend over the next couple of days will be for our temperatures to come up a few more degrees. today we're up to 86 in concord. 82 in san jose. san francisco in the low 70s for this afternoon. we've had this really strong area of high pressure keeping the storm track to the north. we can still see that's the case today as we're seeing some rain up around seattle and portland. as we look at another storm system off the coast, that will be moving in by the end of the weekend bringing in some cooler air. we do still have a few more days of hot weather. for us we're looking at mid-90s which is hot. the beginning of next week that low drops in and may even bring us a chance of showers so it's good to see a little bit of it all in the forecast. we go from summer to spring and back to winter all in a span of seven days as our temperatures peak up to 94 inland on friday. by the beginning of next week we're only looking at highs up to 70 degrees. some big changes ahead. mike, you've been watching changes for the commute. >> changes for the better, kari. highway 101 reopened about 15 minutes ago. this as we gave the last report showing a traffic flow quickly recovering out of san jose up to san tomas expressway where the deadly crash happened early this morning.n se.covering faster th the city streets. i will shout out san francisco where veterans boulevard still blocked for overnight road work and that may continue until 8:00 this morning. tomorrow north 101 will be closed until 7:00. the next phase of repair work. kobe bryant crash investigation. you'll recall deputies were suspended amidst allegations they shared unauthorized photos from the crash site. [music] [music] especially in times like these, strong public schools make a better california for all of us. right now at 6:30 searching for a solution, a closer look at trials for a potentially groundbreaking coronavirus vaccine. plus -- i would love to get going as soon as possible >> waiting for the green light as governor gavin newsom lays out his plan to allow some bay area stores to reopen for curbside pickup on friday. some wonder if it's too early for the next step. a good wednesday morning to you. thank you for staying with us or joining us. >> waking up in your jammies if you're comfy at home. i have a dress on. we're good. and kari and mike are here as well. kari, we're waiting for that warm-up today. yeah, it will be slightly warmer today. we'll really feel that inland tomorrow as well as friday. a look at this nice, cool shot we have in tiburon this morning looking across the bay as the sun comes up. no fog rolling across the bay but may drift through at times. as we look at our high temperatures warmer in san francisco reaching 71 degrees but then check out antioch today. we'll reach 87. 84 in livermore and morgan hill. and in the north bay we're looking at low 80s as well. we'll see some spots hitting the mid-90s. i'll talk about that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. san mateo county deputies are revealing details about the shooting of a woman they say shot at them with a wirifle on main street. she later died from injuries. it happened south of the downtown area. they say the woman was impaired and refused orders to drop her gun. her description is vegas they have not identified her. and tomorrow can't come fast enough for thousands of business owners here in california. that's when the governor unveils his blueprint on phase two of the reopening of some nonessential businesses. yesterday governor newsom focused on small businesses saying that he knows times are tough but he doesn't think reopening will look normal. >> we're not going back to normal. at that he is a new normal with adaptations and modifications until we get to immunity, to a vaccine. >> the governor says counties will also be allowed to keep their own strict guidelines in place and some bay area counties may follow through on that provision with their own new guidelines. california is seeing its first drop in weekly deaths since the outbreak began. that is according to new numbers from the "l.a. times." coronavirus deaths last week fell nearly 10% statewide from 542 to 495. one way to prevent more loss of life as we slowly reopen is testing, testing, testing. we need more of it. "today in the bay's" bob redell this morning joins us live with an update on new testing sites that are opening up in the south bay and how close we are even getting to the governor's new goal of more testing out there to actually reopen our state again. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. governor gavin newsom has indicated we need to be testing between 60,000 and 80,000 per day before we can fully reopen the state and take a look at the numbers. we're not there yet. take a look at the latest numbers from the university of washington's institute for health metrics and evaluation from their covid-19 website. california reported just over 32,000 new tests yesterday. that's at least 50% short of the governor's goal. it is a 4.3% increase from the day before. the governor has a goal to add more than 80 community test sites statewide similar to one in fremont we're showing you on your tv screen. two more sites coming online this morning in the bay area, one on white road in san jose, another one on day road in gilroy. governor newsom will allow some businesses to reopen later this week, this as the just reported its researchers at pfizer and new york university seiko individual 19 vaccine could be available by september. they've already started the human trial for this. the vaccine if it works will attempt to reprogram the virus and instruct our bodies. the idea that will trigger our immune system to destroy the deadly pathogen. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> really interesting. thanks so much, bob. struggling palo alto small businesses may now be in line for some financial help. councilmembers approve grants of up to $10,000 to be handed out through a lottery system. the city launched the program with half a million in city funds but corporations and individuals can contribute. more colleges and universities are facing lawsuits from frustrated students forced to learn nowhere near campus. we told you about suits filed against the uc and cal state system. now the number of suits has grown to more than 25 schools and universities nationwide demanding refunds on tuition and campus fees while learning from home. in some cases students say the professors are not providing any online assignments. some colleges have already said no refund is in order. now to something good for you this morning. this is coming out of el camino with the hospital there in los gatos and mountain view. a beautiful story, laura. >> i really love this one. take a look at the cafeteria. do you see anything different there? el camino health is now serving up toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen staples alongside the breakfast, lunch and dinner. sales were up 13% in the first week as the hospital used its own supply chain connections to help save their workers a trip to the store. >> they can find toilet paper, paper towels, the coveted cup of noodles, which i guess is something really important to people in their households right now, and have an easy time findings those things, produce, a variety of produce items, eggs, milk, butter, pretty much anything that people ask us if we can get we will try and get it. >> the one item they couldn't nail down were the sanitizing wipes. they came up with a lot of great things that makes it a lot easier for the workers to grab and go. nice to see. all those good stories we like to bring to you as well. >> after all they do at work they don't have to run and try to find those essential items. >> i know, it's funny. nowadays you dread going to the store all masked up. i love the great outdoors. the sun is coming up over the ice day ahead, kari. it is going to be a nice day with a lot of sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures as we take a live look outside in the city. we are looking at a high here of about 71 degrees, but then you make your way inland. we are going to see some upper 80s this afternoon and we're going to be talking about how hot it gets. this will be for those inland areas and we'll really start to feel it tomorrow. we'll talk more about what's ahead as the temperatures in some spots hit the 90s coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching the roads. what's going on this morning? yes, it will be slightly warmer today. i wanted to show you this view from mission peak over to fremont and looking across the bay. it is such a gorgeous start to the day here in the bay area. we've had some cool temperatures but it will be slightly warmer and that's going to cause a lot of that green grass start to turn brown over the next couple of days. a look at our high temperatures and where we're headed for today, still a wide range with some low 60s near the coast and then you make your way for the inland east bay. highs in the upper 80s today. and in the north bay expect a high of 85 degrees in napa. san jose will reach 82 degrees and 81 today in palo alto. as we look at our weather pattern and what's been happening across the region there's still an active storm pattern for the pacific northwest. in fact, they're getting some rain today. meantime we have this strong area of high pressure which causes the air to sink. it pushes down on the earth and also makes those temperatures heat up, so that's what we're going to see as that moves in by the end of the week, some hot temperatures but there will be some relief coming our way by the end of the weekend. possibly showers next tuesday. we have all kinds of weather in the seven-day forecast. inland temperatures peak on friday at 94 degrees. then take a look early next week we only make it up to 70 and we can also see the rain coming in. a lot of changes ahead here, laura and marcus. >> thanks, kari. happening now for you, mexico has received much-needed medical supplies from the u.s. a cargo plane received ventilators. right now mexico has more than 24,000 confirmed cases of covid-19 and more than 2,200 deaths. and coming up next a look at our top stories we're covering this morning on "today in the bay" including breaking news out of contra costa county. a fire close to structures. the steps crews took to keep people safe. 6:56. welcome back. breaking news to tell you about, firefighters are still at the scene of a brush fire that briefly threatened homes in eastern contra costa county. it started a little before 2:00 on marsh creek road near the regional preserve. this is video of firefighters working to put out the flames. the fire burned about five acres before firefighters got the upper hand. no word yet on the cause. new overnight san mateo county deputies revealing details about the shooting of a woman they say shot at them with a rifle on main street. at half moon bay. she later died from her injuries. it happened at about 7:30 last night south of the downtown area. they say the woman was impaired and refused orders to drop her gun. she was in her 30s or 40s but has not been identified. >> here is a look at the latest numbers across the bay area. we're now just shy of 9,000 reported cases of covid-19. now 328 deaths. now to new details on the hearing in oakland that would have granted more emergency paid sick leave to part time and gig economy workers. it had to be canceled last minute. this is last night's virtual city council meeting. did not happen due to the requirement of a minimum number of people to be present in order for the meeting to continue. it's still not clear when the council will vote on the new ordinance. social distancing rules did not stop some people in san jose from celebrating cinco de mayo. police had their hands full managing traffic and crowds. in the parking lot in east san jose tires squealed and strangers mingled. only some people wore masks though they have the most cases in the area. people were selling masks, urging safety. and in some cases police had to force people to try to move along. all right. 6:57. i see the sun up. a nice, cool start. things will certainly warm up in the weather department, kari. that's one of the perks of waking up early, we get to see the sun rise every day and it's nice and cool. it's going to warm up as we go into this afternoon. our temperatures get really hot by the end of the week with some of our inland valleys reaching up to 94 but we do have a cooldown headed our way by the end of the weekend we're looking at mother's day reaching into the upper 70s and even cooler early next week. mike, what's going on with those two crashes you were tracking?
