Big changes coming to sfo today. Jetblue is moving into the new terminal. It was postponed because of the pandemic. The airline is requiring something new for passengers. Starting monday, jetblue will become the first major u. S. Airline to require passengers wear facemasks during checkin, during the boarding process, in flight and during the deplaning process. During the entire duration of your flight on the ground and in the air. Jetblue flight attendants have been required to wear facemasks. They have or are about to have the same requirements for flight attendants but theres no passenger requirement in those airlines. Again, this is a first for jet travel being done by jetblue. Jetblue will exempt small children from the new policy. The airline says its following cdc guidelines that recommend people wear them where its difficult to social distance. Jetblues president wrote, this is the new flying etiquette. Onboard, cabin air is well circulated and cleaned through filters every few minutes, but this is a shared space where we have to be considerate of others. We are also asking our customers to follow these cdc guidelines in the airport as well. It would only apply for the current semester due to obvious circumstances. Several other districts are doing the same thing this spring including san jose and berkeley unified schools. Another new milestone hit, people not ill with coronavirus. Oakland schools have now just passed the 1 million mark. This is in handing out Food Assistance to those needy. I want to check in with today in the bays kris sanchez this morning. She has a closer look at the Food Insecurity thats really happening around the bay area. People need these meals. Im glad theyre getting them, too. Reporter absolutely. The surprising thing when oakland unified passed that 1 million mark, they passed it by almost 100,000 meals so clearly a lot of folks looking for a little bit of help during these difficult times. The life line for a lot of families whose children qualified for those free and reduced meals at school and now with schools closed theyre not getting them there. District staff is providing assistance for the families of 14,000 students at oakland unified through the school meals program. The food bank and many different charities. They try to meet that need all around the bay area. There is a 98 increase in demand for feeding america which is made up of about 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries nationwide. The grab and go continues and some districts are providing hygiene items like diapers and baby formula and there are 400 Distribution Sites for food in the ten bay area counties according to stanfords Big Local News project. There is federal funding to provide more Food Assistance which will, of course, be in demand for some time to come. Theres another Ripple Effect from the shutdown libraries, have seen an uptick in demand for ebooks. The chronicle reports theyve seen a 50 increase in digital checkouts since closing doors last month. This is the second version of the Paycheck Protection Program with extra precautions put into place to make sure its really the main street businesses getting the money and not large chains. Were hoping to hear more from the Treasury Department about how the applications were processed. The head of one of americas largest Bank Associations went on twitter to say his member banks are deeply frustrated. Hes raised these issues at the highest level until theyre resolved. The banks wont be able to help Small Business. I know thats not the most scathing twitter message ever but its the head of an American Bank association calling out the government on twitter thats fairly significant. As far as unemployment checks go, theres an interesting argument about the pay involved whether its actually too much. Remember the new stimulus laws add as much as 600 in extra federal money to the states unemployment payments. It only lasts until july but look at the figures. The average unemployment check is 978 a week. Average american was making 957. So the bad news some say is it could incentivize Business Owners to lay their employees off. The average american is actually getting as much or more money assuming, of course, they can get through to the unemployment office. Other news, several reports say salesforce founder marc benioff has been able to secure 50 Million Masks for hospitals by spending 25 million of his own money. The stock market is moving up but we saw a fourth day of progress on the dow. The rally may not last. Scientists warn states are making a mistake by opening too fast and may end up back. It could hit 90 degrees and then were looking at some low 80s in clear lake today, San Francisco in the upper 60s. A pretty big storm out there. North of the bay area, it will push down cooler air as we head to the next several days. This is the warmest day and then we cool down after this. Still that storm track is right over the Pacific Northwest and were missing out on the rain. The change in the temperatures. Look at the numbers. Were at 88 degrees today but then 78 degrees tomorrow. We have more 70s in the forecast which will feel more like it should for late april, early may as that sunshine once again continues.
