Let me give you a sense of optimism in terms of the curve in california bending. It is bending, but its also stretching. Also, only on nbc, an east bay warehouse raided in the midst of this pandemic. The stockpile inside that caught the attention of these state agents. And the reason some africanamerican men are refusing to cover their faces. The news at 11 00 starts right now. Good evening. We begin with two major developments. Im janelle wang. And im raj mathai. Governor newsom says for the first time, california is reducing the spread of the virus. He also arranged the purchase of 200 Million Masks. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney joins us at Kaiser Hospital in san rafael with the new details. Terry . Reporter yeah. Governor newsom making the announcement to a National Television audience on the Rachel Maddow show, saying he used californias buying power to get this deal done. In the last 48 hours, we have secured through a consortium of nonprofits and a manufacturer here in the state of california upwards of 200 Million Masks on a monthly basis. Reporter specifically, about 150 million n95 masks and 50 million surgical masks. All will be coming in from overseas. Gone, says the governor, are the days of buying a couple Million Masks here, a few hundred thousand there, all the while competing with other states. We decided enough of the small ball. Reporter newsom says california will have so many masks, it will be able to share them with other states. The state of california has distributed 41 Million Masks, 41. 4 million n95 masks. Weve received just over 1 million from the federal government. Its not an indictment. Its not a cheap shot. At the end of the day, they dont have the masks at the national stockpile. Reporter those masks are expected in the next few weeks. Stand up, fight back. Reporter they cant arrive soon enough for these nurses protesting outside Alameda Hospital tonight. 269 Health Care Workers in california have tested positive for the virus. These workers say their pleas for personal protective equipment have been ignored. So nurses who are stepping up and saying, this is not a safe assignment, they are being punished or being threatened with retaliation or being sent home. Reporter Governor Newsom also pointing out that it looks like california is now flattening the curve. Youve heard so much about it. Fewer new cases, so were flattening the curve. Its going to be stretching it out too, so were not out of the woods yet, but it looks like were going to avoid overwhelming our health care system. Terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. And every angeleno will share this responsibility with employers to keep workers and everybody else safe. Thats the mayor down there. Now, this applies to virtually every store thats allowed to stay open and applies to only los angeles for now. Now to the east coast and the epicenter of the outbreak in the u. S. Staggering new numbers show more than 2,000 nypd officers have tested positive for covid19. And today more than 7,000 officers called out sick. Thats about 20 of the Police Department workforce. Every county reported new cases today that weve yet to hear from Mendocino County tonight. Santa clara county continues to have the most cases by far. Nearly 1,300. Despite those numbers, there is some cautious optimism in santa clara county. Dr. Sara cody says the rate of cases in the county is slowing down. Previo previously, new cases were doubling every few days. Now cases are doubling about every two weeks. Dr. Cody said its largely because people are staying home. But county leaders warn that we arent out of the woods yet. All of your viewers are doing their very best to make sure they dont get sick and they dont get anyone else sick. So what we want to be able to say is here are the things that youre doing that are working and heres what were still working on. Take a look at the rate at which cases increased per day in santa clara county. Theres the graph there. From march 29th to march 30th, there was an increase of 202 cases. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd joins us in emeryville this evening with the details. Cheryl . Reporter well, i spoke with this woman today. Her name is jenny kip. She is white. Her son is black. Now, she wanted to make it clear that she is not speaking on behalf of the black community. She is speaking out because shes the mother of an africanamerican son. And her media post today is getting a lot of attention. Something thats supposed to be increasing the safety of everyone actually has the chance of decreasing his safety. Reporter jennymea, asking h neighbors not to be scared of black people in masks. Especially as a white parent with a black child, i have no idea what to tell about my child to keep him safe. Reporter and for that reason, kipp feels many black men in america dont feel safe in their neighborhoods, especially when you wear a homemade mask. That, she says, could end badly for her son. Im more concerned about him being misinterpreted by, you know, seemingly wellmeaning white neighbors who misinterpret who he is and what hes doing.
