Workers as well as deliveries, really concerned because we have a truck, a wide load at the san mateo bridge toll plaza. We see the bridge itself moving smoothly. The toll plaza, watch the middle lanes. They had to get a truck to back up to get to a wider lane. There are differences in the width. I didnt know that. Today in the bays bob redell also working from home this morning. Bob, looking at californias latest numbers is there any indication we could be flattening that curve . Reporter a great question, laura. Unfortunately, its too soon to tell based on a conversation i had last week with an epidemiologist. Take a look at the latest numbers, the latest data as of saturday night. This comes from the state and local county Health Department. You can see the number of daily cases statewide spiked last week at just over 800, again, those are cases per day. Now we are just under 700. Is that a short dip between the number spikes again or the start of a downward trend . A stanford Infectious Disease epidemiologist said we may see a touch of flattening the curve but we still need more data points and hopefully will get a better sense some time this week as more test results come in. Right now statewide about 5, 600 confirmed cases of covid19. 119 deaths. Now be prepared to continue to stay inside and for nonessential businesses to stay closed. Sources say all nine bay area counties plan to extend the shelter until may 1st to help slow the spread. Yesterday President Trump echoed the need to extend social wide distancing guidelines. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the weather. Not too much rain in the area. Not too much rain today. We had a little bit over the weekend but we also had quite a few breaks. So today most of the bay area takes a break from San Francisco on southward. Thats where we get a live look this morning with some clouds that start out overhead that will be clearing as we go into the afternoon as our temperatures reach into the upper 50s and low 60s. We see high temperatures reaching up to 65 degrees in san jose and in morgan hill. Weve been talking about not only staying at home but trying to flatten the curve, and were not the only ones under this order. Look at the temperatures elsewhere across the country, and we know when the weather is nice people get spring fever and its hard to stay inside. A high of 72 degrees. High temperatures reaching 94 and new orleans reaching up to 80 degrees. We have some mid60s which will be very nice. As we go through the forecast ive been tracking some rain. Right now to the north of us this storm system like many of the other ones weve seen recently continues to weaken, so as it moves in well bring in some spotty light showers and then going into the next several days the middle of the week we are all dry and our temperatures will warm up. But then by the weekend as we continue on with some dry weather well start to see a new storm system arriving that will bring in some scattered showers. In terms of the rain today mostly only around ukiah, santa rosa may get a little bit of rain and then were going to see the rest of the bay area remain dry. Our forecast shows temperatures reaching into the mid60s and low 70s by the end of the week, check out the weekend. The temperatures come back down a few more degrees. Were going to start with some breaking news this morning. The Tokyo Olympics have been officially rescheduled for 2021. The summer games will start on july 23rd and go through august 8th. Thats almost exactly one year after the games were due to start this year. Last week the ioc and japanese organizers postponed the olympics until 2021 because of coronavirus pandemic. Remember, you can watch the Tokyo Olympic games here on nbc bay area. Governor newsom is speaking at noon today laying out his plan for reinforcements for Health Care Workers. He will also likely follow President Trumps lead and extend californias shelter at home order through april. This comes as the number of cases in the bay area has grown to nearly 1,900 with at least 48 people dying. And around the world another big surge in confirmed cases. Here is a look at the maps showing where the outbreak started in china and spread across the globe. More than 724,000 people have been sickened, and more than 34,000 have died. And a morning look at the big board for you this morning. You can see the dow is up 218 points. Stocks are set to continue their rebound from last week as corona measures extended. Live Team Coverage coming up in a bit. First, lets take a look at the forecast for you. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect after the off and on rain this week, kari. Yeah, this weekend may have kept a lot of people inside, and today we do still have some rain chances for the north bay, but the rest of the bay area will be drying out and also warmer temperatures heading in. Here is a live look outside in San Francisco where we start out with some clouds and some milder weather, and then as we look at our current temperatures in oakland, right now 55 degrees. 53 in san jose and 46 right now in santa rosa. So we are looking at once again more clouds to start out this morning, but we will see some times of sunshine. Ill have more on that and well talk more about the north bay rain coming up. Mike tracking the morning commute and so far its been pretty smooth. Thats right, kari. Very light volume of traffic. There are a good number of cars, just no big backups. The bay bridge toll plaza is an example of that. Weve had metering lights on for weeks. We have an issue coming up 880 through oakland as we look at that camera of the nimitz, showing you a smooth flow of traffic coming up through the area. We dont have any problems north 880, a crash reported on the shoulder. Another truck fire reported around san ramon area or the exit. And were looking toward the south county with another issue. Ill bring that you coming up. Back to you. All right, sounds good. Thanks so much, mike. We fully expect Governor Newsom today to extend the shelter at home order thats already in place for nine bay area counties to really extend it for the rest of the state. Hes speaking at noon today. And today in the bays bob redell is also working from home this morning, and i know youve been looking at californias latest numbers to see that curve we keep talking about, if its flattening out at all. What are you finding . Reporter well, its too soon to tell, laura. You can look at your tv screen and the latest data we have from state and local county Health Departments as of saturday night. You can see the number of daily cases spiked last week at just over 800. Now we are just under 700 new cases per day. So the question is is that just a short dip before the number of daily cases spikes again, or is it the start of a downward trend . A stanford infectious epidemiologist told me last week we might see a touch of flattening the curve but we still need more data points and hopefully will get a better sense some time this week as more test results come in. Right now statewide about 5,600 confirmed cases of covid19. 119 deaths. People might be wondering could we be the next new york state where there are almost 60,000 cases and close to 1,000 deaths. We just dont know yet. California has tested far fewer people and we are still waiting for the results of about 64,000 tests. Now be prepared to continue to stay inside and for nonessential businesses to stay closed. Sources tell nbc bay area news all nine bay area counties plan to extend the shelter in place order until may 1st to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. In the east bay the head of the regional parks is pleading with people to have better social distancing. People ignoring the sixfoot rule. Weve got to change behavior if were going to maintain the ability to keep parks open. Were talking to the Health Department every day. If we cant change the crowds and the behavior, we could get more restrictions. Reporter a number of park closures went into effect this past friday after the weekend before when the district saw more people in its parks than on a busy holiday. That News Conference you mentioned with governor gavin newsom is at noon today. Well have it on our broadcast as well as streaming live on nbcbayarea. Com. Reporting live in the east bay, bob redell, today in the bay. All right, thanks so much, bob. Its 6 35 right now. And also happening today the navy ship the usns comfort should be docking in new york city today as a number of coronavirus cases there has surged past 1,000. Just a rapid pace there. Now the ship will provide medical services to noncoronavirus patients which will help free up hospital beds across new york city which makes up about half of the 60,000 confirmed cases across the state. Hospital tents are now being set up in central park which includes icu beds. So the sickest patients, the ones that are intubated or have a breathing tube, that kind of thing, can be cared for here, also. This is to increase the capacity and take care of more sick people. Can you imagine that in central park. Governor andrew cuomo is also warning people who violate social distancing rules, they may face fines up to 500. Well, San Francisco is creating more social distancing at homeless shelters by using the moscone center. The faculty at moscone west is expected to open this week and provide people a place to stay for the duration of the crisis. Some people already staying at city shelters or Navigation Centers will move there. And in the south bay leaders are looking at expanding care to the homeless in san jose, the Santa Clara County fair grounds will be opening up to 80 Homeless People providing them with cots at least six feet apart. Trailers from the state will also be used to isolate those who test positive or show symptoms. Local leaders say the homeless are more at risk than the average person. Essential workers who are not First Responders are certainly feeling the stresses on their jobs right now. This morning, in fact, hundreds of thousands of them, say they may walk off the job unless they get better protections they feel they deserve both physical and financial. Lets check in with today in the bays kris sanchez who is also working from home this morning. So talk a little bit, if you can, what this could mean for consumers as well, kris. Reporter well, you know, a lot of folks are using Grocery Delivery Services now trying to avoid those trips to the store and limit the spread of the coronavirus. But if you are expecting a delivery today it may not come depending on whether or not those workers decide to walk off the job, talking about 200,000 instacart workers who say that they just want more personal protective equipment. They say they want a 5 per order hazard fee and a default tip of 10 . Insta cart said it is distributing ppe to full Service Workers and theyre launching a new tip setting. Well see if that is enough to keep them on the job. Amazon announced that it is ordering millions of facemasks and offering employees who are sick with coronavirus two weeks paid leave. This comes after employees tested positive at at least six amazon warehouses in six cities, none of those cities is in california. Now the online giant also trying to hire 100,000 new workers. And if you shop in person and youve seen some of the Worker Protections now in place at Grocery Stores like plexiglas at the registers, social distancing reminders for shoppers and also a lot of regular wipedowns. Weve covered the protests by nurses calling for more and better ppe from their hospitals saying that they are being asked to wear the same masks for hours even as they move from patient to patient. So a lot of businesses say they are upping their cleaning policies trying to make their employees feel safer on the job. U. P. S. , fedex, the postal service, they say they are cleaning down as often as possible. Very important to keep these essential workers on the job, even those of us who didnt expect we would be considered essential workers the way that nurses and firemen are at this point. So definitely Interesting Times and a lot of workers taking the opportunity to demand more rights. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Kris, thank you. 6 39 for you right now. Lets get a look at the forecast for you today. Kari, how is it looking out there . We did have some rain over the weekend. Now that rain is moving out but the clouds are still left behind. Were starting out with a live look outside at walnut creek where you can see its about 15 minutes away from sun rise, and its still mostly cloudy. Well see the sun just peeking out from behind the clouds today, but the rain stays away. And it will be slightly warmer as we reach into the low 60s for this afternoon. But in the north bay there will still be a chance of showers as the new storm system approaches, it continues to weaken so were not looking at a lot of rain out of this and thats where we will have some slightly cooler temperatures reaching into the upper 50s in santa rosa while san jose will reach 65 degrees with a little bit more sunshine. Ill continue to track that. Well talk more about how much rain we could see in the north bay today. Thats coming up. Mike giving us a look at the commute that starts out dry for all of our essential drivers. Thats right. And its relatively smooth movement, but well take you to the trivalley. Well stay here for a second, southbound 680 approaching the exit. There is a diesel tanker reportedly it was reported on fire. Theres not. Theres smoke coming out of the cab. That will be a distraction. No slowing south 680. A live look outside shows you how traffic shapes up as were looking at our camera over there and looking at a smooth flow of traffic as youre traveling southbound and in your commute direction. Another live look outside shows you how things are shaping up and a smooth flow of traffic there. Remember that crash hit the nimitz going to oakland has cleared from 880 north. No problems and through the south bay a vta issue, a change there. Actually a couple of transit issues. Ill talk about that coming up. 6 41 this morning. An allnew warning from the Los Angeles Mayor about the new spike of coronavirus cases. Next here on today in the bay what the city is doing to prepare for that surge and how successful officials there are saying the shelter in place has been so far. Reporter President Trump saying things very differently than he did even a few days ago. To get to the big board we started the day positive but investors not quite sure where to go from here. And coming up on the today show its not just people cheering on Health Care Workers. Dogs are doing their part as well. Theres some pictures of a denver doctor and the canine companion puppy she is raising. I kind of lost it and just said i need a minute with her, and so i sat down on the ground with her. It just fixed me, healed my heart. The time is 6 45. Were starting out with a cloudy sky across the bay area. Well get some peeks of sunshine as the rain holds off especially for the south bay. Here is a look at the live view and our temperature trend that will start out in the low 50s but then make it into the mid60s by this afternoon. Ill be tracking that for you. Well talk about the north bay rain coming up in a few minutes. And then well look at the south bay roads and 101 moves very smoothly. We have an issue further south at ferguson just off 152. A big rig crash there. Folks traveling may find some traffic control. Those are a lot of essential trucks. I wanted to shout that out. Thank you very much, mike. Its quickly approaching 6 45. L. A. Mayor Eric Garcetti is warning there could be so many more additional cases in the coming days, and hes actually suggesting that people only with serious symptoms head to the hospital there. Theyre being overrun. Researchers at cal state northridge have introduced a new coronavirus mapping tool. It actually tracks l. A. County cases by neighborhood which now number more than 2,000. Unlike Bay Area Health agencies l. A. County does allow the release of a patients location. 37 coronavirus deaths across l. A. County. Garcetti is encouraging everyone to continue home isolation as teams crunch that data on how successful its been. We know that slowing the spread will take some time to see, and it will still be a week or two before we see the impact. To prepare for the possible onslaught of patients the city plans to use the l. A. Convention center as a federal field hospital. Teams are also in the process of opening up five new shelters to help keep the homeless off the streets. Also in los angeles patients are now officially being brought onboard the usns mercy. The Navy Hospital ship opened its doors yesterday. Its housed patients who are not infected with coronavirus, but this also frees up the space at local hospitals. The ship has 1,000 beds with more than 800 Navy Medical Personnel onboard. Are guns and ammo stores essential businesses . It appears the legal system will have the final say on that. This after gun rights groups, including the nra, filed suit in Central California against governor gavin newsom and other state leaders. The governor determined the stores were not essential and ordered them to close for the duration of the stayathome order. The nra argues that actually violates the second amendment. 6 47 for you right now. And it was just 20 days ago President Trump says that he thought coronavirus would just, his words, disappear. And scott mcgrew joins us now. The president changing his tune very much so. Reporter yeah, its march 30th today, right, and what marcus was saying, that was march 10th, this idea that coronavirus would somehow miraculously, he said, disappear. He said, quote, stay calm. Itll go away. As recently as last week the president was predicting parts of america would be open by easter, but we have since heard very Different Things from the president. Here he is on sunday afternoon. If we could hold that down as were saying to 100,000, its a horrible number, maybe even less, but 100,000. So we have between 100,000 and 200,000, we all together have done a very good job. The decision to prolong not prolong, but to extend this mitigation process until the end of april i think was a wise and prudent decision. Reporter President Trump and dr. Fauci saying that 100,000 to 200,000 deaths will come if we do pretty much everything right. Now originally there was this hope that we could somehow open up the economy by easter. We have been hearing from new york state. They expect the highest number of deaths to come around easter. President trump was challenged by white house reporters on a number of issues, none so much as this claim that he never questioned the number of ventilators americans will need to stay alive. He did question it on fox news. In fact, we played you the sound bite last week. Here he is telling Bloomberg News he never said it. You said new york might need might not need 30,000. I never said that. You said it on Sean Hannitys fox news. Why dont you act a little more positive . My question to you is get you, get you. Thats why nobody trusts the media anymore. Thats why people how is that going to impact thats why you used to work for the times and now you work for somebody else. Reporter he did say it. He said, quote, i dont believe you need 40,000, 30,000 ventilators. You go to major hospitals sometimes and they will have two. He actually repeated something very similar to that this morning on fox and friends during a phone interview. Were following everything thats happening in washington. You can follow me on twitter. You know where to follow me scottmcgrew. Many Restaurant Owners in california are worried they wont be able to reopen after the crisis ends. In a letter to the governor the California Restaurant Association saying that nearly 30 of businesses could go under permanently without help from the state. The association is asking the governor to delay planned minimum wage increases, and here in the bay area Mountain View city council is taking steps to help. The city approving an 800,000 relief package to help bail out Small Businesses like restaurants as well as provide shelter for the homeless. 6 51 right now. Now to something good and a way to say thank you to essential workers during the pandemic, according to the press democrat an event planner and friends visited a rohnert park shop forced to close its doors due to the shelter at home order.
