Largely from home, with a small handful down in the control room. Just me and a single cameraman, chris. Lets get to the latest on the coronavirus pandemic that has us working like this. Overnight a travel advisory was issued by new york, new jersey and connecticut. The advisory came hours after President Trump suggested he was looking at a quarantine for those areas, an idea he later walked back. In the last 24 hours the number of covid19 jumped to 121,000 people. The death toll is just over 2,000. And some hopeful news this morning as houston methodist becomes the first hospital to use plasma therapy to help hosp plasmaone, hoping to build up immunity in the sick patient. Well have much more ahead. Well talk to a doctor whos working inside an icu about the strain on Health Care Professionals on the front lines. Later in our sunday spotlight, the staggering Economic Impact of the virus that has brought American Business to a standstill and the wellknown retailers that may not survive. In our sunday closer, harry smith introduces us to the music students who became vishl stars by delivering some of what the world needs now. And later, we will beam some light into another difficult week when we revisit one of our favorite sunday sitdown with Actress Kristen Bell on the recordbreaking frozen 2, the end of nbcs the good place and the moment she met her husband, dax shepard. Do you remember the 100 . This guy can talk. I didnt know who he s om jack a sunday sitdown with life lived later in the show. Lets begin with the travel advisory in effect for three states that make up 10 of the countrys population. The advisory came hours after President Trump suggested a possible quarantine of those states. Nbcs kathy park is live outside javits center, which is undergoing a massive transformation. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Here in new york state, the death toll is just alarming. More than 700. Infections are supposed to peak between 14 and 21 days. Because of the ongoing crisis, to say theyre taking serious action like transforming this Massive Convention center behind me as a hospital, which opens up tomorrow. This morning a cdc travel advisory for residents in new york, new jersey and connecticut now in effect. Asking them to refrain from nonessential travel for 14 days. Well do a quarantine. Reporter President Trump initially raised the idea of an enforceable krz quarantine but backing down saying a quarantine will not be necessary. The initial proposal drew criticism and confusion. This is would be a declaration of war on states. Words matter and when you lack clarity, that can create confusion and confusion can lead to panic. Reporter meanwhile, the virus continues to spread. A Naval Hospital ship is on its what i to new york, the epicenter, where cases have gone beyond 50,000. Late saturday New York Knicks announced its team owner, james dolan, tested positive for covid19. All across the country, states are bracing for the worse, building popup hospitals. On the front line of the crisis, growing outrage over the shortage of medical supplies leading to protests. Were incredibly frustrated. We know the federal government can give us these resources. Reporter u. S. Mayors are also sounding the alarm, citing a survey that around 90 of their cities dont have masks, personal protective equipment. The Surgeon General warning detroit, new orleans and chicago could become the next hot spot if theyre not able to bring down the numbers. To keep the virus at bay, rhode island is cracking down incoming new yorkers, telling them to selfquarantine for 14 days. Around the world, the death toll is climbing. More than 10,000 in italy and passing 6,000 in spain. But a promising sign in chinas hubei province, where covid19 was first identified. Five consecutive days with no new infections as life is slowly getting back on track. And back here in the state, some breaking news overnight in maryland. 66 residents at a nursing home in carol county tested positive for covid19. 11 are now hospitalized. Willie . So much concern about Nursing Homes as kcross the country. Why did President Trump first float the idea of quarantine for the hard hit states of new jersey, new york and connecticut, later he called unnecessary as you heard criticism from the governors of those states. Reporter the president s quarantine idea formed and fell apart in just about eight hours. President trump suggested the measure after a asked him a question on a different topic. He said he had spoken to Governor Desantis of florida, and florida has been concerned about travelers from the new York New Jersey area bringing the illness south. Governor is he san dishas been criticized for not closing public beaches earlier. While the federal government through the cdc does have powers to quarantine in an emergency, the president and his advisers did not answer my questions about what legal basis the president would use for what he called an enforceable quarantine. The uproar was swift and loud. Governors from those three states talked about the potential chaos and impact. A twoweek travel advisory was issued instead. Connecticuts governor summed it up this way, saying the white house was thinking out loud. Kelly odonnell at the white house, thank you as always. Lets bring in nbc news contributor dr. Vin gupta, an intensive care doctor working right now with coronavirus patients and a Global Health policy expert who sounded the alarm in 2018 that a pandemic was coming to the United States. Dr. Gupta, thank you very much for being with us this morning. We appreciate your time during a very busy time for you. Lets start with at the end of this week, a long, difficult week for the country of where we are in terms of numbers, in terms of the trajectory of all this, in terms of whether or not social distancing is, in fact, having an impact in the positive. Where do you see where we are right now . Thanks, willie. Giving us such an important platform. Every expert in this field, whether from harvard, two days ago university of washington, university for health metrics, major universities have published forecasts saying this is going to get a lot worse. Cases are going to climb, icu needs will get more urgent. We havent seen the worst of it. Its getting worse, not better. Cases are continuing to climb, as youre noting. Were not even remotely close to being out of the woods yet. And what im seeing is seattle is a state that has incredible Hospital Leaders and a governor thats been on the forefront of a response, but we have no idea of social distancing is having the affect we hope it has. One, because its been implemented with such diversity across the country. I think were making i think were making progress qualitatively in places like washington, from what i understand from colleagues in other states as well, but who knows because we dont have good testing. Testing is still lagging. I think weve oversold where testing it at the moment. Its not where people think it is. Theres still significant challenges. You were on the front lines treating coronavirus patients, some are gravely ill, as you pointed out to us. Whats the need to your hospital and hospitals across the country for the personal protective equipment so doctors like yourself dont get sick and theyre taken off the field . I want to give credit to my hospital and the hospitals across seattle working with colleagues across washington state. We are protected. We are which is to say we are protected at the moment. Forecasting out, what are the needs going to be locally . Were going to lead a lot more which is why the defense protection act and implementing it is key. The forecast model suggests we need more, not less. Right now were okay. Where im concerned is my colleagues in new york city and wearing garbage bags instead of gown, not having not n95s when they need it. This is a different story depending on what location were talking about. Right now its a patch work approach, different zip codes across the United States have different needs. We need more ppe. Its completely inacceptable that doctors and nurses dont have the materials they need. We know we dont have the materials we need come april when these cases spike. Thank you for your insights and thank you for what youre doing as youre in your scrubs and go in and work with coronavirus patients. Were so thankful for you and all Health Care Professionals. Thank you. Chuck todd is political contributor and moderator of meet the press. Lets take a look back at the president s handling of this. Just yesterday we can focus on that where he came in front of the cameras for a quarantine for states that make up about 10 of the United States population, sent people scrambling around here in the new york area, where its been so hard hit, and then walked it back later. Its a pattern. We heard the defense production act, maybe he would use it, maybe he wouldnt, this drug is agood but the fda hasnt approved it. Hes been in fights with governors this week. What does he get after it when he goes after Governor Whitmer of michigan or governor inslee of washington, two states hit so hard. Kelly odonnell said she quoted an official saying, thinking out loud. I thought, if that doesnt sum up all President Trump through the last 3 1 2 years, when confusion has been created by him in some governmental way, its usually because, what . Hes been musing or thinking out loud. This is where theres been the biggest disconnect how most governors in america have handled this, the jo friday approach, just the facts, sir, just the facts, maam, type of approach where the president continues to personalize the response, continues to personalize any ask or criticism. I mean, it was oddly reval a. Tory that the president allows personal political views and personal sleights on how he deals with certainly governors. Its blunt honesty there but its also a way to create more problems in this response. Thinking out loud has heavy implications in a moment like this. Chuck, thank you very much. A little tease of what youll hear on meet the press w good morning. We are seeing once again some showers. We got the rain yesterday. Its about 51 degrees right now in san francisco, so the temperatures remain in the 50s. Today we will be seeing a slight warmup in the 60s. A live look at satellite radar. You can see the rain, plenty of instability off the coast. That will continue to sweep on through today as far as our temperatures go. Warming up just a little bit into the 60s. 62 in san jose. Straight ahead, the return of popular demand of the highs and lows of the week with the country already in awe of our doctors, a pair of them give us another reason to cheer for the heroes in scrubs. You might say and a state trooper who helped his doctor improvise after her dance competition was postponed by the coronavirus. And later, in a week of jawdropping unemployment claims and businesses struggling to survive, what will the American Economy look like on the other side of this crisis. Were wondering whats going to happen with our beaches, our lifeguards, our employees, where these people are going to go. Its all coming up on sunday today. As we head to break, our photo of the week. Through the safety of the glass at Morristown Medical Center in new jersey, a man holds up a sign for the staff that reads, thank you all in emergency for saving my wifes life. I love you all. A nurse at the triage station heard the mans knock, saw teers streaming down his face and asked if she could take that photo. She posted it to instagram with a caption that reads in part, this is why we do it. Times are tough but we make a difference. Yes, you do. And we are all so grateful. Im happy to say Morgan Radford joins me from home for the highs and lows of the week. Morgan, we couldnt go another week without seeing you. How are you doing . How are you, willie . Im sitting here, im ready for the highs and the lows. Oh, youve got the mug. Lets do it just like normal but this week were going all highs to shine a light on the good things across the country and around the world. Our first high goes to the First Responders answering the calls in history. If the world could give a collective standing ovation, it would look like this. People on the streets and porches and balconies while confined to their homes, saluting the brave doctors and nurses suiting up and risking their own help to work long shifts while caring for patients in the battle against the coronavirus, and often doing so without enough protection for themselves. If that wasnt enough, some doctors are working to lift our spirits, too. One surgeon at the mayo clinic in rochester, minnesota, became an internet star this week while showing his talent outside the operating room. Imagine all the people sharing all the world that is dr. Elvis francois, singing john lennons imagine, his colleague dr. Robinson is on the keys. Im sure hes a good doctor but he might need a record contract as well. Thats incredible. Im telling you, he has a second career in store. Weve been talking about the health of our bodies, but the health of our spirit is so important, too. Those doctors can sing. Apparently they do it all the time but its getting some attention right now when we need it. The next high goes to the spirit and creativity of refuse to leta little social distance ruin their celebrations. Birthday parties have given away to honking cars and front lawn singalongs. Pasadena, california, 15yearold coco johnson returned home from the hospital after her last chemotherapy appointment and got quite a surprise from the neighborhood. Woo woo coco, we love you a heros welcome for coco with friends and neighbors lining the street and hanging out of their cars with signs and decorations to celebrate the last of the teenagers treatments for bone cancer. It was really overwhelming. I was just, like, shocked. I was so surprised. The light at the end of the tunnel will be there soon hopefully. Absolutely, coco. Morgan, i say this is a tradition we continue after were through this coronavirus episode in this country. Parades in the streets all the time. I love it. I love how i love how creative people are getting with showing how they care. Coco, we are with you all the way. Absolutely. Our next high goes to all you parents out there suddenly transformed into teachers, coaches and, in some cases, dance instructors. When one little girl in nebraska had her dance competition canceled, her father, a state trooper, stepped in to make sure the show went on. I need a hero im holding out for a hero through the end of the night hes got to be strong hes got to be fresh from the fight lieutenant tyler kreike dancing with 8yearold mila. Her instructor told her to teach parents the performance for practice. She taught it to dad and i would say Mission Accomplished here, morgan. Yes. Im ready for that parents patrol dance troup to hit the road. I need to get one of those capes. Our final high a reminder were all in the same position as you are, passing the time. Fox sports productser joe buck is a longtime playbyplay man who has called world series and major golf tournaments.
