KNTV NBC Bay Area News At 11AM July 13, 2024

Stock, especially with all that we have been seeing with that bad news this morning. Reporter well, thats exactly right. I think marcus thats because the markets was expecting and wall street was expecting this move and washington moved so quickly to fix it. Lets look at that number. The official number is 3, 283,000, the number of people filing for unemployment in the most recent week measured. That makes sense when you think about it. Of course, we expected that number. Look around you. The stores are closed. The restaurants are working at halfstaff. But the stimulus bill can ease that pain. Both sides got what they wanted. Democrats were able to get some supervision over some of the oversight of the money going to corporations. We got money to workers as well. Its going to be the Unemployment Benefits that are written into that bill that got expanded and extended that probably will help your family most. I know a lot of people think of that check and think of that. But i think its the unemployment that will make the most robust difference as for those checks, americans earning less than 999 will get some payment, americans earning less than 7500 will get the full 1,200 payment, based on your most recent income tax return. Now, heres where Congress Might have miscalculated. People out of work right now have zero income whatsoever. Theyre not making any money. Markets may have made sense instead of what you earned in 2018 or 2019 to pay everybody the same amount and claw it back perhaps during the tax returns of next year. But then again, this is the way theyre doing it so again, even if you are making no money now, you can apply for unemployment but you, if you are making more than 99,000, you are not going to get a check. Scott mcgrew, thank you for breaking that down. You know the coronavirus has a lot of businesses closed. The time its shutting down a c after their o form of mass transit are wondering how theyll get around. Nbc bay area Chris Sanchez joining us live from san jose with impact this is having on a lot of riders. Chris. Reporter hi there marcus. The good news is that bus service is unaffect. Ed. Unaffected. You might have to scramble a little bit to figure out where is it they are going to scramble to catch that bus. All the trains out of service. We got the video in the last half hour, each will get a deep clean before returning to service. Meantime, about 60 vta employees are staying home for the time being. These are folks who are operators, they are trainees and they are also maintenance workers. We saw the vta found out that they had an operator trainee who tested positive. By 11 30 last night, all light rail was shut down in the city. There were six trains rung at the time, effective today, all Light Rail Service is suspended for the foreseeable future. All trains again are parked. Vta ridership is already down, because of the bay areawide shelter at home. Bta says they are vta says they are doing what they can to keep riders safe. We have an essential service for everybody to provide and we need everybody to do their part to ensure the safety of all our public and their operators. Reporter now, the bay areawide shelter at home order is having a big increase in light rail ridership. Bus ridership is down too, not dramatically. Bart ridership is down 90 . Muni ridership is down as well. They have a relief for transit agencies. Thats across the nation. We dont know yet what piece of that pie bay area transit will get so for folks today, the question is how am i going to stuff. To the Chris Sanchez, nbc bay area. Chris. Thank you. San francisco county just announcing the second coronavirusrelated death. That brings the death total in the bay area to 30. The total number of cases has actually topped 1,300. San francisco announcing 45 more cases this morning and San Mateo County says that they have 30 new patients. And Santa Clara County still by far has the largest confirmed bay area cases reaching more than 450. Now, this graph, we want to show you this right here. Its giving you a better idea of the spread over the past two weeks. There are the confirmed numbers. We seen it grow from 58 on march 7th, where there were far fewer people getting tested. We now have some numbers from the free testing site in the city of hayward, reporting 54 of the 207 people tested earlier this week have tested positive for coronavirus. Nbc bay area is live in hayward where the testing site s. Sharon, i know they are still awaiting the results of hundreds of more of those tests. Reporter thats right, marcus. You can see people standing in line still waiting to get tested. Theyre standing about at least 6 feet apart from each other. Then over here, you can see the drivethrough line. Now, this line of cars stretches down about a mile, trust me, i sat in that line of traffic trying to get back to this live shot. So, it will take some time to get through this line. People are still waiting in their cars. This was the scene earlier today around 9 00 when the testing site opened. Unless you have a fever and meet certain criterias, such as traveling to europe or asia, you will be turned away, most likely, thats what we saw early on, with self people in the driveup line. The hayward drier Department Says its hard to turn away people who wait in the line for hours, county health and the cdc have required stricter guidelines for testing here. We want this to be a very positive for the community. The community to come here and clear up some, you know, you know, they want to know if theyre going to be positive or negative. So thats what we are trying to provide. And you know, we, like i said, this situation is constantly evolving. So, you know, we can only do what we can do. Reporter he wants the attitudes to be positive, not the tests, of course. The lab is processing hundreds more tests taken this past week and the lab is overwhelmed, trying to get results. So today will be 100 testles. And back here live, again, people are waitian the fire capu are turned away, he is if you a turned away from these tests to protect hayward, nbc bay area news. Kerry hall is tracking the coming system for us. Kerry. Reporter yeah, that system brought us cool air. Its still with us today. Even though the rain has continued to clear out. There will still be a slight chance of rain going into today. A live look outside in San Francisco. It is all clear. Once again, those temperatures have been very low this morning, in fact, part of the north bay started out in the upper 20s this morning. Now ads make your way out the door as you may be headed to work, we are seeing a live look in dublin and a mix of sun and cloud, our temperatures will hold steady in the mid50s and for many of us, thats about 10 degrees below normal. As we get a look at the radar and satellites still some rain, just off the coast and to our south and i think that parts of the south bay as well as the peninsula may see an isolated shower, possibly a thunderstorm pop up again today. Ill be watching that. Well talk about the updated Drought Monitor and that incoming rain for the weekend, thats coming up in the full microclimate forecast. All right. Thanks, kerry. You know, some people who were sick with upper respiratory infections as far back as january now are wondering if they had covid19 and if thats true, many of them are probably wondering if they built up an immunity to coronavirus. Today in the baseball in the bay, bob riddell, sheltering at home. I want to know, what is the Infectious Disease community what are they saying about all of this . Well, you know, mark, its hard to know if people had covid19 already because there is no covid19 Antibody Test. But there were a number of people sick in january. My wife and i included. We had coldlike symptoms. We were diagnosed with upper respiratory infection. Knocked us out for a number of days. So i asked a the shes an Infectious Disease epidemiologist at sanford university, is it possible that People Like Us had covid19 back then . Well, she pointed out the winter too imis typically our flu and upper respiratory virus season. There are several ought viruss that cause the same symptoms, covid19 didnt show up in tests here until the last week of february. So for someone like me and my wife to have had it, its possible, if we had just returned from china or had been on a cruise ship, she says, but more likely, it was one of those other local viruses. Again, we dont have an Antibody Test to know for sure yet. As far as whether you develop immunity once youve had covid19, right now, doctors just dont know. There are seven human coronaviruss. We got covid19, mrz, sars and four other ones that cause the cold. We know from the common cold virus you develop immunity. But its not one longlasting. So that you can get infected over and over again. So were think figure this is like the common cold virus, like we said we dont know that for sure yet. That a big push to try to figure that out is that will we need to get an annual vaccine, for example . Because this might be like flu season. You get a flu vaccine, a covid19 vaccine or Something Like that. Doctor maldonado tells us its not hard to come up with the Antibody Tests to see if somebody has had covid19. The issue is, how reliable are those test kits and how well do they measure real immunity. That is something Stamford University working on right now as i speak. They hope to have a reliable Antibody Test within weeks, possibly months. Reporting live, bob riddell, nbc bay area news. All right. Bob, thank you. Well, some Financial Relief could soon be coming for College Students and families, if the covid19 stimulus package is signed. Federal student loan payments could be suspended without interest through september. Some students may be eligible to receive more Financial Aid. If a student or parent loses their job, they can apply to the colleges Financial Aid office by simply writing the letter expressing their change of income and update on the fafsfa application. We are anticipating as we get more into the summer months, we will be receiving more letters from students and parent in particular about income reductions, job losses. The deadline to apply for Financial Aid is in june, but it may change due to the virus. Well, Grocery Stores across the bay area are struggling to enforce senior store hours, some younger shoppers are flooding stores during the designated senior hours. Zay way says between 7 00 and 9 00 a. M. , vulnerable groups can shop first. Many seniors say some stores open at 6 00 a. M. So its packed with people ignoring the social distancing order n. San jose, they actually have volunteers there at the door to make sure that the most vulnerable get in first. Well, there is a new push to limit crowds at public parks across the bay area. A group of bay Area Organization and nativeamerican tribes have released new pandemic guidelines, recommending all gatherings be stopped and social distancing rules follow. Many municipal and Regional Park districts have already joined the state in taking their own measures to stop the spread. Meanwhile, two coastal cities are making similar moves with the same limitations in mind. Halfmoon bay and pacifica are now closing all city beach parking lots. Governor newsom closed all state parks and beach lots. A Contra Costa County man is helping people get through the pandemic with a little music. Look at him go. She says her grandfather has been holding porch concerts with his accordion every day since the shelter at home order started. She says that people gathered to hear him and even cars stopped to listen. Those performances are also being streamed live on facebook. Nice to see. So it really is nice the see someone on a porch play music, kari, you cant beat that. Reporter you cant. It has been really great to see all of the nice uplifting stories that weve seen amidst all of this goings so as we get a look at your sunshine, maybe that will also help lift your spirits today, but it is chilly. Weve had to put on a heavier coat this morning with those temperatures starting out in the 30s and as we now go closer to the lunchtime hour, it will be in the upper 40s, low 50s for the bay area. A live look outside in San Francisco. Looking at this beautiful view across the bay looking at alcatraz, we can see the sun is shining overhead. Then lets head to the south bay. Weve also enjoined some sunshine there. A few more clouds rolling by as this disturbance remains very close to our area and may still bring in some rain for a few isolated spots, especially this afternoon. Around you can see those fair weather clouds looking at sunol and the green grass, but the temperature is only 49 degrees. Yes, it is still very cool. And even colder, of course, in yosemite as we get a live look at the fallles. It is also a Beautiful Day after seeing waves of rain moving through. There is still some light snow over parts of the sierra, some rain just to our south. We will have a chance of some of that rain developing and once again a few isolated spots today, quickly changing weather, still a possibility as the storm system remains nearby. Just this morning, the Drought Monitor was updated and so we are now looking at more than half of the state in a moderate drought right now. A really concerning considering that we have still seeing some rain recently, but that was not enough to help us out with the moderate Drought Conditions and then we have one county in far northern calirn now in a severe drought. Developing, despite the couple of storm systems that we have seen recently and for the bay area, it does include much of our area, except for parts of Santa Clara County, where we are seeing still some abnormally dry conditions in the south county area. Elsewhere, we have those Drought Conditions continuing. And so going into the weekend, there will be ootsdz storm system approaching. So that will only bring us light amounts of rain. This will not help out with the Drought Conditions. So going into our forecasts, expect some spotty rain possible today. We are drying out
