Before we get to all of our guests, democrats screamed over each other in a chaotic debate as President Trump tightens his authoritarian grip on power. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause seth the 2020 election will be a referendum on whether we want to preserve whatever is left of our democratic institutions, or whether we want to complete the slide into authoritarianism weve seen under donald trump and that slide is not only real, after trumps impeachment acquittal, its accelerating you can tell both from trumps increased lawlessness and from the way he stands. I mean, look at him. He leans like hes accelerating. He literally looks like hes sliding downhill on skis if you gave him a tiny push, hed fall over like a jenga tower. [ laughter ] the Trump White House has literally been making lists of supposedly disloyal government officials, purging them from the administration, installing unqualified cronies in high profile positions, insisting he has the right to interfere in criminal cases to protect his allies and claiming that not only is he above the law, but that he himself is the law im allowed to be totally involved im actually, i guess, the chief Law Enforcement officer of the country. Seth no, youre not a Law Enforcement officer. First of all, youd never pass the background check [ laughter ] or the physical. You dont [ laughter ] you dont even know [ cheers and applause you dont even know the sound a gun makes. Ah, ah, ah, beak. Seth is that is that a gun or a ducks mouth . Beak. Also, trump declaring himself the countrys chief law effort officer makes clear that he desperately wishes he was a cop, when at best hes more like that weird crossing guard who no one actually knows and who doesnt seem to be paying attention to traffic. All right kids. Lets go just make sure dodge the cars. [ laughter ] and by the way, while hes tightening his own authoritarian grip on power, trump is fresh off a trip to india where he cozied up to another authoritarian nationalist, narendra modi, whos rounded up 1000s of muslims and passed a citizenship law that discriminates against islam. And rather than comment on any of that, trump said in a press conference before he left india that he wanted to avoid being controversial, so as not to ruin his trip i thought it was a great two days it was a fantastic two days. Im going to be not at all controversial because i dont want to blow the two days plus two days of travel on one answer, one little answer. So ill be very, very conservative with my answers if you dont mind seth its so weird when trump just openly says what hes doing. Hes like a guy on a date saying, normally id be cheap but tonight im going pick up the tab so youll have sex with me [ laughter ] but tomorrow breakfast is on you. [ laughter ] trump, od course, has a deep affinity for fellow authoritarians hes always trying to mimic them or impress them. Whether its modi or putin or the time he sat in oval office with crowned Prince Mohammed bin salman of saudi arabia and literally showed off a giant poster of all the weapons hed sold to them like a sixth grader presenting a class project on the military. Did you know the army has planes, and tanks and boats . [ laughter ] the democrats are trying to sort out who has the best chance of defeating trump. And thankfully we got answers to that important question last night in a calm, well organized debate on cbs with clear questions in which everyone took turns speaking and we got to hear their answers first of all first of all no, let me talk let me talk. I think tom, i think she was talking about my plan. Not yours. [ talking over each other your opposition to the filibuster i had time out in not a digression from a long time ago. I think shed recognize me. Mayor bloomberg alleged never said that to have said to one of his oh come on, i wrote that law. That bill along with you didnt write that bill i wrote that bill. I did write i wrote the bill lets talk about what it adds up to lets talk about math. Lets talk about math indeed lets talk about math. Okay, so heres the math if were doing nothing the truth is, pete one at a time the americans senator klobachar donald trumps, bernie this has to stop. Bernie, donald trump let me ask her. Thank you, bill senator klobachar, a expression new topic, new topic for this whole campaign i dont senator seth jesus [ laughter ] does the c in cbs sand stand for cluster [ bleep ] . [ laughter ] now with the stakes for the 2020 election so high, the Democratic Candidates spent some time in particular fighting over their own positions on Foreign Policy now lets be clear, theres no comparison to trump on this topic and any false equivalence between trump and any democrat is absurd. I mean, trump has taken his praise for dictators to gross new levels emulating them and even bragging that he and kim jong un quote, fell in love over kims beautiful letter, which he has bragged about or shown off to reporters multiple times trump loves holding up pieces of paper. [ laughter ] hes like a High School Senior running into the house with his College Acceptance letter. Mom, look, i got into pyongyang university. [ laughter ] at least i think thats what it i cant read. [ light laughter ] and yet, even as trump has lavished praise on one authoritarian nationalist after another, republicans and democrats were attacking Bernie Sanders for comments in which he praised not cuba, but cubas literacy program. Now, as Fact Checkers have noticed, sanders comments about cuba mirror those of president barack obama in 2016 soon after he had moved to open diplomatic relations with cuba. And yet when bernie tried to point that out at last nights democratic debate, a few people in the crowd tried to boo him to bernies surprise. What i said is what barack obama said in terms of cuba, that cuba made progress on education. Yes, i think really really seth bernie sounds like he just got cut in line at the deli really . [ laughter ] youre gonna walk up let me see that ticket thats handwritten thats handwritten thats not from this store. [ laughter ] meanwhile, billionaire former republican Michael Bloomberg has actually praised authoritarian leaders like chinas xi jinping, who he has said is not a dictator and last night bloomberg again refused to call xi a dictator. But somehow, even worst than his comments on repressive dictator, was his bungling of multiple lame, prewritten jokes that he tried to shoehorn into his answer mayor bloomberg, as mayor of new york, you declared war on obesity. You banned transfats from restaurants. And you tried to do the same with large sugary drinks so if you become president , will you push those policies on the National Level as well well, i think whats right for new york city isnt necessarily right for all the other cities otherwise youd have a naked cowboy in every city so, lets get serious here. Red lining is not the problem with the Mortgage Market but it was a problem for the communities where it was done. And we stopped that. Let me also say because just to since i have the floor for a second that i really am surprised that all of these my fellow contestants up here i guess would be the right word for it, given nobody pays attention to the clock. Im surprised they show up, because i would have thought after i did such a good job in beating them last week that theyd be a little bit afraid to do that. [ laughter ] seth let me put this in terms a new yorker would understand Mike Bloomberg went so far out of his way to make the joke, he had to take the fdr, to the bqe, accidentally ended up on the l. I. E. And now his competitors are all on the f. U [ laughter ] [ applause ] now Mike Bloomberg could just have easily stayed out of the race and spent his money to help which ever democrat got the nomination or he could have just offered trump himself the money to resign you know trump would take it trump has never in his life passed up an opportunity to make money. If you asked him to sell the presidency for 1 billion, hed say, yes. And then quietly peel the sticker off his desk that says for sale, ten dollars. [ laughter ] and yet bloomberg decided instead to get into the race himself, because he cares more about stopping progressives like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders in fact, he basically admitted as much himself in leaked audio from 2016 in which cnn reported that he called warren scary. And, honestly, the way warren has destroyed him in these debates, he should be scared last night, for example, she highlighted allegations that bloomberg harassed and discriminated against pregnant women in his Company Including one incident in which he allegedly told a pregnant employee, kill it. Now, bloomberg denied making the remark, even though the Washington Post reported that a former bloomberg employee said he witnessed the conversation. And then after the debate, msnbc anchor Chris Matthews asked warren if she thought bloomberg was lying and her straightforward answers seemed confuse matthews do you believe that the former mayor of new york said that to a pregnant employee . Well, a pregnant employee sure said that he did. Why shouldnt i believe her . You believe hes lying. I believe the woman do you believe hes lying which means hes not telling the truth. And why would he lie . Because just to protect himself . Yeah. And why would she lie . I mean, thats the question, chris. Seth damn, look at his face. [ laughter ] he genuinely cant understand. Why would he lie . Just to protect himself . Doesnt make any sense powerful men never do that. [ laughter ] warren flipped the question on him perfectly. As soon as she turned it around on him, matthews malfunctioned like a robot whod been asked an unsolvable riddle. Could god make a rock so big he could not lift it . Error, error. [ light laughter ] were watching as our current president tightens his grip on power and cozies up to authoritarians around the world. Meanwhile, an exrepublican billionaire is trying to buy his way into the democratic primary purely because hes scared of progressives like warren and bernie and when bloomberg insists hes the only one who can beat trump, the rest of the field looks at him and says really . Seth youve been here before and then about a month ago we went out and we did day drinking together yeah. That was Something Else. Yep seth did you were you did you was it what you expected as far as how much we drank . No, we have a bone to pick. Seth yeah, okay. And that bone to pick is that, that [ bleep ] is real seth yeah. [ laughter ] that is no joke oh, were on tv. I cant say that seth yeah. Well, it was Something Else seth yeah, we drank a lot in two hours. And we drank a lot. And i had a meeting directly following this seth oh, you cant do a meeting. Because i assumed that this would be like seth tv drinking, yeah fake. Seth yeah, yeah, yeah. Fake drinking but i will say, i think you and i held our own yes. Seth we drank the most, yeah well, yeah. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] we did drink the most. We did. We drank a lot seth i felt the worst, and you and your brother, kevin, received the most shaming. Yeah, he did. Seth cause he has two children cause hes a dad. Seth and he drinks the least. He drinks the least seth yeah. I have two children and i did fine [ laughter ] you did fine. Seth yeah. Kevin tried seth he did. Really hard jack tried. Seth yeah, jack tried really hard extra, sweet, sweet jack. Seth yeah, sweet, sweet jack he did his best. But all in all it was a really great memory, what can i remember of it seth well, thats why its nice that its committed to film yeah. Seth although i am always dread when i see the first cut of it. Cause i dont have any memory of it either. One thing that i was very impressed with is we drew song titles that we did not see in advance yeah. Seth and then were told to give five minutes to write a song you guys wrote a very good song in five minutes. It was disheartening it was a really scandalous song seth it was a scandalous song there was it was hey mom, dad, we did this day drinking thing maybe dont watch the song portion. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] no, it was cool seth it was a beautiful song beautiful seth i will say its the most beautiful song ive ever heard that has a line about 69ing. Yeah. Seth yeah. We should add it to the set seth add it to the set, for sure right next to all the camp rock songs. Seth yeah, exactly [ cheers and applause now, i knew that you you had not gone to college. Obviously, it made sense you had a lot going on thank you for reminding me. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] but i didnt realize that you went and looked at one i did seth which was my alma mater. You went to northwestern you went to northwestern . Seth i did, yeah amazing seth yeah, and you went on the campus tour. I did i went back in 2008 or 9 we were on tour. Seth yeah. We stopped in chicago and i had a dream of going to college to study being a writer, a journalist, something. And i went with my dad to visit the campus and it turned into kind of like a scene from hard days night. It was seth because you were very well known at that point at that point it was very difficult. Seth yeah, maybe a little too late to be normal at college. Yeah, yeah [ light laughter ] perhaps, but the real dream was try to try to walk onto the Baseball Team and play seth wow which i know we share sports in common. Seth yes, but you actually had do you actually have skills, do you think, to have played College Baseball . [ laughter ] no, im impressed. That was the most polite way seth yeah. And now, why did you think that . Are you talented . I, at that point, played a lot of baseball. Seth yeah. I probably didnt have the size then to play and be competitive but i always loved it and then because i loved it, i kept it up and we got really into slow pitch softball seth okay, gotcha. Its like baseball, but its slow seth yeah. [ laughter ] for, you know, untalented people seth you have been on the voice before, but this is your first year in the chair. Yeah. Seth this is a bigger deal when you first got this offer to do a full season in the chair, your wife very excited. Oh, shes a big fan of the show seth yeah. And has been for a long time. And so, she was there with me when i got the call. And, you know, it was kind of a conversation that had started with nbc after songland. Which was such a great experience for us, working with ryan tedder. And for those that havent seen the show, its one of my favorite shows on tv and after we did that show, they then called and said wed like to talk to you about the voice. And she flipped out. And she came to set and she saw the chair. Ill say that when i saw the chair too, theres something that happened. I got a little, you know, sort of goose bump moment as i looked at it. Its really cool i mean, you look to your left and your right, its john legend, kelly clarkson, blake. And kind of a dream to be in that spot. And i feel very honored. I mean, i have a heart full of gratitude, especially since its now aired. And my team is awesome seth now, i know i you cant [ cheers and applause now, youve shot some. Yeah. Seth but you so even you now dont know how its going to end. Because obviously we have live shows to find that out but do you feel how is your confidence i feel very, very good. Seth yeah, okay. And im not just saying that. Seth gotcha. The way that things have shaken out and its pretty cool, i feel like the cast of game of thrones perhaps but with way less blood and seth yeah, lower stakes, yeah lower stakes. [ light laughter ] seth you just finished up a tour, yes . Yes [ cheers and applause seth very exciting april, you are going to be you start a residency, a month long residency in las vegas. Yes seth are you excited we are so excited we kind of were viewing this in a way cause this last year has been one of the most remarkable years of all of our lives. Just to be able to reconnect as family we talked about it a bit in day drinking but it was sort of drunken conversation seth yeah, i dont remember any of that, yeah. [ laughter ] to reconnect as family and then to have the music connect in the way it has with our amazing fans who stuck by us through the time we needed apart, is really special and then to do this 90something stop tour across the world was really special but to then kind of view this as a bit of a final hoorah for this era, the happiness begins era, is really special. So if youre going to be in vegas, we could day drink again or whatever. Seth day gamble. Day gamble. Seth yeah. But were real excited to put on an amazing show for our fans out there in vegas seth this has been a really cool thing thats happened, i feel like, in the last decade plus of younger musicians in the sort of peak of their career going out to vegas and making it possible for people from all over the see them. [ laughter ] and so its really nice that you paid off their faith in you. Immediately seth yes immediately seth another cool thing is that you have an older brother in the league. Yes seth who plays for the eagles and won his own super bowl a couple years ago. Yes seth did he talk to you before the game, any super bowl advice before you went out you know we had dinner the friday before the super bowl and my family was all sitting around, and i had been getting asked all super bowl week, you know, what advice did jason give you . Im like, hes got a kid. He doesnt want to talk to me about the super bowl when he just got kicked out of the playoffs. [ laughter ] seth right, right. Like, let me give him a chance, you know, regroup. Seth yeah. And i asked when he was in philly and he just or when he came down to miami and he told me he was just, just be yourself. Dont let the moment get too big. At the end of the day its just a game guys start to do special things or Something Different pregame or the week to the game, thinking that, you know, its such a big moment. Such a big game, ive got to do everything that i possibly can and the reality is its what youve been doing all year you just got to stick to it, and be yourself. Seth did you find in the moment and obviously, this was a thrilling super bowl you guys had the come back did it just feel like a regular game to you . It felt like a regular game except for there were stars everywhere seth yeah. It was miami. [ laughter ] so it was just every time you looked up at the screen it was beyonce or David Beckham or somebody seth right it was just like, oh, wow. Look oh, yeah super bowl, super bowl stay focused stay focused. [ laughter ] seth you couple years ago, you and your brother played a faceoff against each other. Yes seth and luckily for your parents you werent on the field at the same time you didnt have to actually physically yeah. It was just a offensive cheering section. Seth yeah. But you did you make the jersey for your mother yes, i had the jersey made for my mom seth this is very nice yes m seth that she can wear this in the stands a half and halfer. Nice. Seth yeah. [ audience aws ] nice. Yeah, and then of course, i had to put myself on the front because she loves me the most. [ laughter ] seth yeah, i was gonna say i notice that you didnt go right down the middle, you really put him on the back so that no one yeah. [ laughter ] yeah seth only the people sitting behind her would know that she was also jasons mother. [ laughter ] hes two years older two years and you i read there was an epic fight back in the day oh yeah seth when you were a freshman and he was a junior in high school. Yes it was probably the last time that we really got into a fistfight or anything like it. We were in the backyard just playing basketball like we usually do and i started getting a little saucy, started beating him a little bit [ laughter ] and he wasnt feeling that as an older brother. So he started getting a little more physical throughout the game and of course when youre in the backyard, no blood, no foul seth yeah. So that whole competitive mind state went from there, and into the kitchen and it ended up starting with him punching me square in the face [ laughter ] and usually when he punches me square in the face i fall on the ground this time, i didnt really fall down i just got more angry. Seth sure, as you would. And attacked him. Seth yeah. And attacked him. And were scuffling. Were throwing each other around sure enough, i pick him up and i body slam him on the Kitchen Floor and the oven, which had my mothers casserole in it at the time [ laughter ] breaks off the hinges and the casserole shatters in the oven [ laughter ] and yeah, my mom wasnt too happy about that [ laughter ] seth well look, she got a very nice shirt out of the deal. You know there you go. There it is. [ laughter ] seth something im always impressed with is when people go out, extra mile, give back to the community. You started an organization not just for kansas city but for the part of ohio youre from yeah. Seth 87 and running. Tell us a little bit about that. 87 and running. And its its been so much fun not only reaching out to the kansas city community, getting out there, shaking hands and meeting everyone but raising funds for the right reasons. Seth and you also you just opened a science lab somewhere. Is that right . Yes, a stem robotics lab. At operation breakthrough, which is a unbelievable cornerstone in the kansas city community. It helps the under served kids that are in poverty that just need somewhere safe to go after school and on top of that it provides an unbelievable educational experience like the stem and robotics lab that i was able to provide to the organization seth thats fantastic. And i came out, and it was everything i thought it would be i thought i would have anxiety coming back to snl that always feels Like High School seth yeah. Sure but it just felt normal and great. And before i knew it, i just wanted to watch the show, and eddie did his thing. I really came out to get the photo op seth you wanted to take a picture . I just wanted a picture, man. [ laughter ] seth its hard though cause theres not really its not like theres a photo line at the end of the episode right seth so, howd it work out at the afterparty, cause i dont see eddie. Were waiting for him to come out of his dressing room after the show he never comes out everybodys out there. It is a sea of famous black people in studio 8h. Seth yeah. Yeah it was like a coming to america 2 audition or something. [ laughter ] it was just everybody famous that wanted to be in the movie and so, i dont see him there. I get to the party im sitting there. Chris rock kind of like, waves over and im like im thinking hes talking to me so i go sit with chris rock. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] and now were all hanging out and talking, and im just like, man, i just came out here to take a picture with eddie. He was like, good luck with that. [ light laughter ] eddie walks into the restaurant. Entourage of ten people. And im like, yeah, this isnt gonna happen the only way this could happen is if hes coming toward me right now. And his chair was right here when this table went that way. Seth yeah. While i was on the end of the table going that way and i was like eddie. He was like i was like, finesse. He was like, i know, i know yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] and then took the pictures seth and we got proof. There it is. There it is seth boom, look at that smiling, and its perfect. [ cheers and applause not only just a excellent sketch player but one of the best comedians all time. Seth best comedian of all time yes seth it was i will say it was a thrill to watch him do the sketch again yes, i loved it seth like just remember like how good he was at that in a way that nobodys been ever since. Yeah, and just reminded me of how bad i was. [ laughter ] seth that is not true. Why i made a early exit seth you i love talking to people, especially from my era and their failed sketches. Mmhmm. Yes let me tell you why, i know snl sometimes is traumatizing not only just on the cast members who leave the show and say, oh, this didnt happen that didnt happen. Seth yeah. The guests are always the same way every time its 20 years later. I see snoop and hes like, finesse, why they didnt do the apimptice . [ laughter ] donald trump had come on the show the week before we did this big apprentice sketch. Seth yeah. So snoop comes on the week after and he has this grand idea to do the apimptice. [ laughter ] and instead of saying youre fired, ill just smack a chick and say, you tired. [ audience oohs [ laughter ] and i was like, yeah, snoop. I dont think nbc gonna let you smack anybody on tv. So seth he should be happy now that they didnt do that that they didnt do it. [ laughter ] seth you also had jermazing. Aw, jermazing seth jermazing was a character that still holds a place in my heart. He had a jerry curl, people and every time jeramazing got excited or you called his name, he says, huh . And his jerry curl juice hits the person next to him in the face [ laughter ] seth and he was a waiter and he was a waiter so, imagine saying, waiter. Huh . And juice goes all in chriss face or kirsten wiigs face. Seth and it was a lot of special effects for this yeah. Seth because they couldnt use they couldnt actually make it work so somebody had to like spray juice from the other side. Right water wasnt leaving the wig in time so they wet a big paint brush and they just had water on a brush. And every time i said huh . They just flash people [ laughter ] so you just see kristen wiig soaked or Chris Parnell soaked and when we couldnt get it right, theyre sitting there all wet and theyre just looking at me like, your days are numbered [ laughter ] your days are numbered.
