Transcripts For KNTV Today In The Bay 20240713

Across the country. Here in the bay area there are now 42 cases. Half of them in Santa Clara County. And good morning. Thanks for joining us, im marcus washington. And im laura garcia. We have much more coming up in a few moment on the coronavirus. But first a check of the friday forecast with kari hall. Things are changing today. And more clouds and cooler temperatures. Areas in the low 60s and then upper 50s with light rain. We spring forward this sunday and seal a few clouds with the sun and temperatures in the low 60s. Well talk about next weeks rain chances coming up. Mike is tracking a crash. With one slow spot and the rest of the map, every with where is green. A mild slowing through san jose just starting. More slowing southbound 680 off the benicia bridge but easing up around highway 4 a break for a crash into concord but the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights yet. Back to you. Turning back to the coronavirus case, we have Live Team Coverage for through morning. Pete suratos is tracking that cruise ship off the coast of San Francisco. And kris sanchez is answering our questions this this morning. But we begin with tracie potts live on capitol hill. President trump expected to sign a 8 billion relief package today. Reporter right. In fact we just got word that is happening any minute. It is happening here in washington, d. C. Not at the cdc has planned but this morning the wouse reversed that saying the trip is being canceled and the president doesnt want to interfere with the mission down there and the work theyre trying to do to fight the virus. And part of the work is trying to make sure there is adequate testing. The Trump Administration has admitted there is a significant shortage of testing kits and while trying to push them out, the virus continues to spread. We dont have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward. It is critical that we get the tests back quickly to move patients through the emergency department. Reporter now lets talk about the money. The president signing off on 8. 3 billion. Most of it, almost all of it, is being used to fight this virus. Some goes to the cdc for prevention and recovery, some goes to nih, National Institute of health as they try to develop a vaccine. Some going into preventing this from affecting people overseas and dealing with sick americans who are overseas. That is what the president is expected to be signing off on any minute. And we have updated numbers this morning, 14 americans have now died, 14 people in the u. S. Have now died. And we have more than 200 cases that have been diagnosed in the united states. Plus this virus has spread to four more states. Laura and marcus. I didnt think about the americans overseas dealing with the virus. Tracie potts in washington for us this morn sthoog ning. And now the waiting continues on board the grand princess cruise ship and this morning we spoke with a passenger on board. Today in the bays pete suratos joins us live are where the test kits were delivered. So any word on the timing when the results could be released. Reporter good morning. The last statement that were getting are from the grand princess cruise ship said the test results could be released as early as today. With well, we have to wait and see when they arrive. Yesterday they were flown in by helicopter and given a Police Escort to the richmond lab. 3,500 people were on board and 45 tested for the coronavirus. Three people who cruised to mexico on the same ship have gotten the virus including the Placer County man who died from the virus just a couple of days ago. Now 62 people from the cruise stayed on board the ship taking the next cruise to hawaii which departed from San Francisco back on february 21st. As you mentioned, we did speak with a messenger on that cruise ship, a facetime conversation this morning about how things are going on the ship as they wait for the test results. Were taken care of and im sure there are people that are scared. There is a lot of elderly people that have [ inaudible ]. But i think that for the most part we all just want to do what everyone says and get off the ship as soon as we can. Reporter now those on the ship are being told to stay in their rooms, of course while the tests are pending. Meals are being delivered and theyre getting complimentary internet to stay in contact with family and friends but it is unclear when the cruise ship will come back to shore. Reporting live, pete suratos for today in the bay. Thanks for the latest, pete. Well across the bay, schools are taking precautions amidst all of the coronavirus fears. San franciscos Lowell High School is closed for at least four days. This comes after School Leaders learned the parent of one student is being treated for coronavirus. Oaklands aspire Monarch Academy charter School Closed until monday with word a teacher there may have the virus. The ticker at the bottom of the screen is run ning a complete list of schools now closed. Berkeley Health Leaders are holding a twitter town hall to answer questions from concerned residents about the coronavirus outbreak. It is scheduled to start at noon. Doctors confirmed the citys first case involving a patient who traveled abroad who is now under quarantine at home. Were aiming to answer any questions about the coronavirus. Kris sanchez joins us once again. A lot of south bay parents are talking about a possible case at childrens Discovery Museum. This is a high traffic area and tactile displays but it is a possible case. Still getting a lot of questions about the big Purple Museum in san jose where children and employees might have been exposed to the coronavirus. Here is what with we know. The museum shut down after learning that an employee might have been exposed to covid19. That is a big field trip day but the exposure is limited to wednesday, march 4th. So that is the area of concern. The museum is now closed until next tuesday march 10th. Theyre doing a deep clean. Childrens Discovery Museum is answering questions from parents over on the Facebook Page. They say they are also following the advice of the Santa Clara County Public Health department. By now you you probably have Hand Sanitizer and disinfecting wipes and kari went and got a batch yesterday and weve seen empty store shelves but now it is time what you need in case you have you have to quarantine. It might be what you have in your earthquake kit. Think of grains and nut butters and beans and baby food or formula to last two weeks. You also have to have enough medicine to last a quarantine which is 14 days, that means Prescription Medication but overthecounter meds like ubo profen and acetaminophen and there is no need to hoard toilet paper and the supplies have been ebbing and flowing this weekend. Folks talking about empty shelves but then yesterday kari went with out and there was an ample supply. So it it depends on where you do. And the shipments come and go. So good to have some, but just be reasonable and in how much you buy. Exactly. Good advice. And were updating our website and digit at digital platforms and just point your camera to get it done quickly, it is the qr code on the lot bottom section of the screen to take you to that section. And people trying to protect the families. Have to get readiment that and that is the bottom line. As we look at the sierra. Take a look at that. Im ready to go up there. It is a nice weekend to watch some snowfall. And weve been watching our sierra snow pack. Right now only at 42 of where it should be for this time in march. And it is nice to see that well see some snow this weekend. Up to eight inches of snow in kingvale. And we may see more snow coming our way by next week. So watching those forecasts. Well also see a chance of some bay area rain going into the weekend and early next week. Ill have more on that in a few minutes. Mike is following a minor b. A. R. T. Delay. Well call it out. B. A. R. T. Notified us but then a equipment problem out of San Francisco. They say were in recovery mode. Heading over to the east bay, you might be delayed 10 minutes but twitter is not lighting up with complaints so that is good news. A smooth drive into the city. The span moves nightly. More traffic but no metering lights just yet so slowing up the incline. Again a smooth drive. The biggest problem and the only problem is south 680 approaching highway 4 debris and overturned vehicle and person transported from the scene and slowing off the benicia bridge and clear after you get to highway 4, so in concord, youre just fine south of there and in fact everywhere south of there. Back to you. Thank you, mike. 6 10 this morning and coming up on today in the bay, as concerns grow over the coronavirus, businesses growing for some companies, well well tell you who is profiting next. Com right now at 6 14, if youre going to squall valley on alpine meadows, expect good conditions and snow coming down on saturday and sunday, it may slowing down coming back. Were going to have at least more snow coming into next week and bay area rain. Well talk about more of that in less than five minutes. And we have more traffic on the san mateo bridge. So the brake lights are being tapped. You see that on the right side. Westbound does move smoothly but timing is fine across the bridges. No metering lights at this moment. Well show you that toll plaza coming up. Good morning. Im Frank Holland at cnbc headquarters with top business headlines. Wall street is continue a wild week as the february jobs report far exceeded expectation as the u. S. Economy adding 273,000 jobs and the estimate was 175,000 and the Unemployment Rate around a 50year low. And stocks erased most of the gains and the 10year treasury yield hit an alltime low and this morning continues to go slower. And costco reporting stronger than expected sales due to consumers stocking up to prepare for a more widespread outbreak of the coronavirus. Costco saying the impacts from the coronavirus boosts the monthly same store sales for february by 3 . The company telling analysts it is received deliveries every day and in some cases it is placing limits on how much customers can buy. And stock trading robin hood is facing fallout during a time while clients could not move money while the stock market surged. A lawsuit was filed on wednesday night alleging that robin hood was negligent and breaches the contract by failing to provide a functioning platform. They had a lot of problems. All right, thanks, frank. Well 6 16 this morning and Time Magazine is celebrating International Womens day. They went back 100 years showing off legacy women for every year. Time starts out in the 1920s showing off a group of women who fought for the right to vote and ending with 2019 showing a coverage of Climate Change activist greta thunberg. And ill tell you about an inspirational woman in my life on social media. Mars has the name for the next rover and they have a teen from virginia. Alexander mather entered the rover naming contest and he submitted the name perseverance and nasa leaders say that his entry best captures the spirit of exploration. Nasa is launching perseverance into space this sum sneer trending this morning, one irn attorn one intern going the extra mile. This is in the mt. Washington observatory in new hampshire. The intern eve attempting to walk through wind and snow. Shes going to deliver some coffee. Peak wind gusts at the time had reached 117 Miles Per Hour and it was around negative 20 out at the time. The observatory jokes saying, quote, no interns were harmed in the making of the video. But you see her going up against the wind. Oh people who make it to the top of mt. Washington all get a Bumper Sticker saying i survived the worst weather in the world. Who is handing them out . The interns. Was she getting the coffee or heading back. She spilled it. Probably would have froze any way. Very cold there. So we cant explain about our weather here. Even though it is going to be cooler going into the weekend. Also more clouds moving in with a chance of some light rain. Here is a live look in fremont. As you get ready to head out this friday morning. Were seeing nor clouds moving in. A little bit of a light breeze as we see the flag waving there. Temperatures in the low 50s and a slow climb in temperatures today. Unlike the past few days where the temperatures went straight up. We could see this temperature trend is a little more flat. Well see the temperatures in the low 60s. At 1 00 as the sun trying to peek out. A high amount of tree pollen still out there. The top allergens and wine and pillow and juniper, in case what is really bothering you. Palo alto reaching 61. 60 in oakland. 58 is the high in napa. And in San Francisco expect a high of 57. So big changes here. Now that the cold front has arrived. We could see all of the clouds that extend from the northeast to the southwest. We could see it oriented just off our coast and as it moves through today, well see more clouds as well as some breezy winds. But by tomorrow the center of this low gets closer and it brings in some sierra rain and snow for the bay area. Some very spotty light showers. Well see another chance of rain going into next week. But right now the computer models are are pushing it a little bit farther to the south. So this will bring in more rain for the Central Coast and southern california. As that moves through it will see another chance of rain going into next week as another low drops in. But all of the storm systems for us look very minimal. For southern california, we may see over two inches of rain for next week in l. A. We bring it to the bay area and santa rosa may not measure anything. It looks like it is more focused farther to the south. Up to close to three quarters of an inch of rain for the south bay and our temperatures cool for the weekend. Dont forget we spring forward this sunday morning. And highs will reach into the low 60s. That chance of rain will be next tuesday. Then it looks like it dries out and warms up by the end of next week. Mike has two spots of slowing. Now the bay bridge toll plaza is one of the spots. And that might not be a surprise monday through thursday but on a friday we roll the dice and right now it looks like our number is up. We have with the metering lights it appears they are on. Chp didnt concur jet but the backup is there. A smooth flow of traffic through the maze. But the second spot was a lot of slowing coming off the benicia bridge. Look at that, carquinez bridge is fine but benicia bridge 680 slow from just off the toward highway 4. Our sensors go red is the slowest and green is the fastest and the o, orange approaching 680 at highway 4 so the earlier crash injured have been tran ported and that is the issue through martinez and concord and walnut creek is just fine and vasco at speed. Still about 20 minutes from marsh creek road out of brentwood and byron and toward 580 the only good route cutting through the trivalley but no problems. Disabled vehicle reported in sunol and it doesnt look to be an issue. The peninsula is great like here in palo alto. And no delays for 101 or 280 along the peninsula and the south bay is just waking up. Back to you. Thanks, mike. New from overnight, a wild highspeed chase ended with a foot chase and gunfire on a california freeway. And prince harry and wife meghan attend a final public event last night and what got them so emotional. Plus nbc bay area responds.
