Tonight two San Francisco residents are in the hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus. That includes a man in his 90s and a woman in her 40s. Theres also a potential tie to a High School Student and tonight a high school is closed. Parent of a lowell High School Student is being treated for covid19 also known as coronavirus. Reporter theres no comfortable make that the student contracted coronavirus. They have no sum tomorrosymptom are in self quarantine. We are taking the familys concerns into account and we know this was a confer testify decision. Reporter 3,000 students will be out through friday at least. And now theyre trying to figure out if the parent came to the school recently. Go were working with cph and theyre assisting on backtracking and figuring out the timeline on where the parent has been. Today we are announcing the first two cases of coronavirus in our city. Reporter hours earlier, mayor london breed and city leaders revealed the department of Public Health lab revealed positive tests for a man in his 90s and a woman in her 40s. In we do not know at this point how they were exposed to the virus. Reporter the Health Department is looking to the patients histories and contacts to help slow the spread. The cdc and state will determine the most appropriate lock for the ship to berth. Reporter meanwhile, theyre not sure if the cruise ship off the coast of to will even dock here. California state Health Department and the Governors Office of Emergency Services with the u. S. Coast guard are working to determine if covid19 is presence t on the ship. Reporter now of course the high school will get a good cleaning over the weekend. And then families will be updated on what to expect before monday morning. In a letter sent to parents, a teacher at action day primary plus moorpark was sent home on february 26th. She hasnt returned since. Sh she is now being treated. The school is closed while crews are doing a deep cleaning. Everyone is calling each parent individually. Were okay with that. Now we have to look out for others and our sick ones and my child who was a premie, so now im nervous. In oakland, the aspire Charter School is closed until at hooleast monday. A teacher there may have been exposed to the coronavirus. School leaders are being extra cautious and no one at the school has tested positive for the voorirus. Okay, stuck at sea. Weve been telling you about the nearly 3500 people stuck on a cruise ship because of coronavirus scare on board. As you heard, the ship is being kept in waters 75 miles outside of San Francisco. This is happening because a california man who previously was a passenger on that very ship on a prior cruise to mexico died this week of the coronavirus. Now all the passengers and the crew on board are being kept there until testing can be done on some passengers that are showing suns showing signs of illness. Those tests were delivered on board earlier today via helicopter. This is video from the coast guard actually dropping those kits right on the deck right next to the pool. Some of the passengers were tested today. Now lets show you those kits. Right now youre looking at live pictures. Those kits already having taken the test being taken to the lab in richmond. This is a lab that is going to test to see if those are positive for the coronavirus. This is a Training Center where the coast guard is going to land those tests. Nbc bay a nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez is live at the port of San Francisco. Thats where the passengers are supposed to arrive on saturday. They dont know when theyre going to get back there. Right now its a waiting fwam for th game for them and a nervous one, too. Reporter thats right. And passengers are doing their best not to panic. Ive been talking to them all day. In fact, one woman from marin just texted mow me video of the helicopters picking up the tests. At this point all passengers can do is sit and wait. Weve now just been told that we are now quarantined in our room. Reporter Denise Stoneham of novato says passengers aboard the grand princess cruise ship have been advised to stay inside their cabin. This video we obtained shows Health Officials flying in test kits this morning. We saw the helicopters come in. We saw the military plane circling the ship. And then from there it just kind of became surreal, hike thlike really happening. Reporter at least three people who cruised to mexico on this very ship got the virus, including a man who died from it. 62 people from that cruise stayed on board taking the next cruise to hawaii. They and others are being tested. Testing protocols are being put into place for those passengers and crew who have shown flulike symptoms or hmay have been exposed to the virus. Our hope is that nobody has it, that everybody tests negative and that were all able to get off the cruise ship and get back to life. And his sister iris called him back. It was iris who shared his story and that he had a son running a martial arts studio in oakland who would very much want one of his fathers paintings. Ernest froem the third who spends his day mentoring youth says his father was largely absent from his upbringing. Relationship was that i knew i looked like him, but i didnt know him. I didnt know him. Reporter once he heard that, matt understood the true value of the painting. Oh, wow. Wow. We all want to make money, right . But, you know, i listen to these folks story, i dont know, it just touched me. It touched me like the painting did, you know. And i couldnt keep it. Reporter earnest says the painting now sits on his mantle and he looks at it every evening. I look up at it, and it gives me more of an insight into what he was thinking. This isnt the only piece of his fathers art that ernest now has, but he says he has it up there on the wall. He looks at it and tries to get inside his dads head, understand the mapn a little better now that hes older and wants to understand him more. And a painting like this showing what he was thinking. Notice since the start of the year usually in winter, january and february you see the drought diminish. In this case, its a completely try february and things still dry right now. It continues to expand. Moderate drought around the east bay and peninsula. What we need is rain. And looks like saturday will bring us rain with higher totals around the santa cruz mountains. Tomorrow is the transition day. Increasing clouds. Into saturday morning now you see the rain showers pass on by. Not really a big storm but enough, we hope, that will break us out of the dry spell. Then we get clearing into saturday night, more clouds into sunday, but the second half of the weekend should be staying dry. One more storm to watch. The Largest Union of nurses held a News Conference in oakland today. They say theyre willing and able to take care of all patients but worried. Unions say nurses dont have proper equipment to protect them. Nurses are extremely frustrated, confused and concerned about their wellbeing, the wellbeing of their patients, families and the public. So far, 80 nurses have been quarantined because of the virus. We did reach out to various hospitals for a response and have not heard back. Heres something weve been hearing a lot. Dont touch your face. Thats the advice from Santa Clara CountyPublic Health department, but its sometimes hard to follow that advice. Just ask the director of the department.
