Thats what critics want to know about a new report on radiation testing at Hunters Point in San Francisco. As Investigative ReporterJaxon Van Derbeken shows us, even the author of the report worries about the findings and how theyll be used. Reporter in this report, four uc scientists endorsed the testing that found no safety concern for People Living on the only developed part of the former Hunters Point navy shipyard. Thats the base where contaminated ships were sandblasted after returning from Hydrogen Bomb tests in the pacific. The mayor ordered the report to assure residents because the testing did find a radioactive disk from one of those old world war ii ships. Late last year the panel delivered this draft of its findings to top officials. Nbc bay areas Investigative Unit obtained a copy. The panel stopped short of endorsing the surface testing calling the findings reassuring but cautioning they do not prove that other radioactive materials may not be buried deeper in the soil of the parcel. In the final report, the panel decla declares the surface testing appropriate as a health and safety survey. This is not a minor change. This is trying to change the entire spin. Daniel hearse is the retired director of the environmental and Nuclear Policy program at uc santa cruz. Hes a longtime cleanup critic who has pushed for deeper salt testing on that occupied parcel a at Hunters Point. The original draft said one thing.
