i think they're all weak >> so that's the lay of the land here in new hampshire. you obviously spoke to the former vice president yesterday. i think their campaign knew he would win iowa and new hampshire. i don't think they were contemplating perhaps a fourth or fifth place finish, which might happen today. >> it could, savannah. to take a step back, biden's entire argument was electability i'm the toughest candidate to beat president trump he had the fourth place finish in iowa and now there's reporting and concerns he could finish fifth here in new hampshire. that could be devastating. look, we've seen a real shift in strategy from the former vice president. he did not want to go on the attack against his rivals. he told you in that interview you did with him last week he didn't want to do that, he didn't want to go there. he changed his strategy. he's been on the attack of pete buttigieg and bernie sanders i asked him is that the right course and he defended that strategy. he said look, i have taken more incoming than any other candidate. but the question is how will voters respond to that i have been out talking about a number of them and they said look, we just want to hear about the issues. >> kristen, we will see how it all plays out. and as mentioned, buttigieg hopes to build on his showing in iowa, even something he called shocking so we met up with him in the granite state to talk about the votes he still needs to win over and rivals' recent attacks what does a win in new hampshire mean to you? is it life or death? >> it's certainly for us to do well, just like iowa was although this is a very different state in many ways. >> you've been talking about improving your numbers with the black electorate but so far it hasn't paid in dividends. can you show or demonstrate any progress in that regard? >> yes, absolutely the big thing has happening now is voters of color who are laser focused on defeating this president more than anything else want to know you can actually win the process of proving that has only been under way in a few number of days after a year of campaigning, proposing, talking, and that will give us the look we need as we travel directly to states like nevada, south carolina and super tuesday states where we have a lot of racial diversity and can make that case eye to eye >> our last national poll showed your support from african-americans dropping it was 3% a while back now it's 0%. >> some polls show the reverse i will not get caught up in poll. >> let me give you one other, there's a quinnipiac poll out showing michael bloomberg getting 22% of the african-american vote. and he's relatively new. you got 4% to your argument black voters want to see someone who's a winner, how come it's not showing up for you in this effort >> i don't have billions of dollars to put on the airwaves we have to go to every state and show. >> but you have been successful with the democratic fund-raising so you do have money to spend. >> yes, but we have to make sure we proceed in first iowa, new hampshire and then south carolina. >> let's go to vice president was a little snarky comparing your record as mayor to the vice president. >> in threat under joe biden, helped iran. and in fear of missing pets, buttigieg put licenses on pet chip scanners. >> to be blunt about it, he's saying you don't have relative experience >> if you're out for the most years spent in the washington establishment. i will not be your candidate i think what americans are looking for is a different perspective, to change what's going on in washington before it's too late. >> senator klobuchar said we don't need a political newcomer. the argument you're making was one of donald trump. he was new to politics and an outsider to washington >> the problem with donald trump is not that he's a newcomer. the problem with donald trump is that he's donald trump i'm not a stranger to uniform or office i'm not a stranger to government >> when you look at someone like bernie sanders, who has a history of identifying himself as a democratic socialist, is this somebody who could win? >> i think it would be very difficult, and not just because of the labels, but the approach. what he's proposing in terms of the budget, how he's proposing how to pay for them, there's a $25 trillion hole to pay for everything he's put forward. >> what do you say to bernie sanders when he says you're in the pocket of billionaires >> that's just wrong at the end of the day we have to make sure we're inviting everybody we can to help doe feet donald trump. >> i noticed you talked about the deficit the other day in one of your rallies. even though the progressives on the left talking about the deficit, they think that's not in fashion they said the republicans co-opted these policies. you really stuck your neck out there. that something you plan to do is deficit? is the deficit something of major concern to you >> yes, i think we have to take that back. truth is if you look lieu my lifetime, it's only been democratic presidents who have done something about the deficit. but my party has been allergic to talking about it or focusing on it. here you have donald trump creating a trillion dollar deficit and doing it mostly to finance tax cuts for corporations in the wealthy. the bigger that gets, the harder it will be to fund the programs we believe in. >> the president thinks he can say one thing and do the opposite. >> while the former mayor has taken aim at the president on the campaign trail, he's escaped any counterattack. biden likes to say the president attacks me because he's afraid of me. he's the opponent i fear most. he hasn't really gone after you. >> i don't think he can figure out what to do with me and that's fine by me. i don't care about the president's approach he will find a vulnerability, and if he can't, he will make one up we have to focus not on me, but on voters. >> so mayor pete buttigieg yesterday poised for perhaps a good showing here in new hampshire. very hopeful that will propel him on and just ahead, guys, why election officials here in new hampshire say they're confident they will not have a meltdown like the one we saw in iowa last week of course, nbc news will have live coverage of the primary results throughout the day, results later tonight with lester holt. so we will be back with you in a couple minutes and talk more about the race and how tight it is here in new hampshire. >> we look forward to that, savannah, thanks craig joins the table with breaking news on the coronavirus front. >> yes, in fact an american evacuated from wuhan last week tested positive for the virus and kept under isolation in san diego. meanwhile, the death toll in china has risen to more than 1,000 now. and we're hearing from the americans who are quarantined on that cruise ship in japan. nbc's molly hunter is in japan for us molly, good morning to you >> craig, good morning to you. we're in yokohama where "the diamond princess" headed out to sea to produce fresh water and perform necessary mechanical procedures it will be right back here tomorrow morning the big question on this trip was all of these new cases, were they from before the quarantine started or are they appearing during the quarantine?
