you had janelle monae, chris rock, steve martin. >> janelle monae did so well. i think so many people are saying, i have to see "parasite." that ended up doing so well last night. >> i think it'll get a bounce from the oscars. no question. we'll have more on that night in a bit. let's get to the top story. the extreme efforts being taken to stop the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. >> overnight, the world health organization sent a team of experts to china, where the death toll has soared. and more americans have tested positive on a quarantined cruise ship. >> nbc's molly hunter joins us now from hong kong. she's got the latest on all of this. 3408 molly, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. that's right. china had its single deadliest day so far over the weekend. and that cruise ship, off the coast of tokyo, has more coronavirus cases than any single country outside of china. overnight on "the diamond princess," the number of positive coronavirus cases doubling. >> we're not safe on this ship. we need to be evacuated while some of us are still healthy. >> reporter: there's now 135 total confirmed cases onboard, including at least 24 americans. still, not everyone onboard has been tested. >> the only test we've received has been one thermometer check a week ago for 30 seconds. >> reporter: the 75-year-old passenger says passengers are asked to their take own temperature three to four times a day. but rebecca frazier in the hospital for her third day. she said she never showed symptoms before testing positive. >> they checked my vitals throughout the day. i had a little bit of a temperature when i got here. but that's gone. >> reporter: 1,500 miles away at the epicenter in wuhan, desperation. this woman yells that her husband can't breathe, and no hospital has a bed to take them. across china, disturbing videos like this are being posted on social media. they appear to show so-called quarantine quads, rounding up people suspects of having the coronavirus. this man taken down stairs. this couple stuffed in a box on a pickup truck. the first american death, a 60-year-old in wuhan. a huge test in china's biggest cities, deserted for the last few weeks, with million heading back to work after the extended lunar new year. in hong kong, a mandatory quarantine for all travelers from the mainland. jail time threatened for those who evade it. gayle carter, aboard the "diamond princess," says the government isn't stepping up. >> we all need to be tested. our government needs to step up. it's time to come for us now. >> molly, the number of deaths in the cases is increasing every day. do officials expect that trajectory to continue? >> molly hunter in hong kong. thank you. new hampshire is at the center of the political world this morning. the democratic candidates barnstorming that state because the primary is tomorrow. and polls show a very tight race. bernie sanders and pete buttigieg both building on that momentum from iowa. we have two reports. let's start with kristen welker, in position in manchester this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the stakes could not be higher here in new hampshire. consider this, in modern history, no candidate has gone on to win the democratic nomination without placing at least first or second in iowa or new hampshire. so, with ten candidates left in this race, the final sprint is on candidates are making their final frantic pitch to voters today. each making their case at multiple events across the granite state. >> to dream big, fight hard and win. >> reporter: overnight, the iowa democratic party release updated caucus results, showing former mayor pete buttigieg in the lead 14 delegates senator bernie sanders with 12 while the results are not yet official, buttigieg is trying to capitalize >> this is, i think, what winning feels like >> reporter: but buttigieg's strong showing in iowa is opening him up to increased attacks by his rivals. senator sanders again accusing him of being too cozy with wall street >> pete has raised campaign contributions from over 40 billionaires >> reporter: buttigieg responding that democrats cannot exclude anyone if they want to win the white house. former vice president joe biden releasing this ad. mocking buttigieg. >> joe biden helped lead the passage of the affordable care act, giving health care to 20 million people when pete buttigieg was called on, he installed decorative lights under bridges, giving citizens of south bend colorfully illuminated rivers. >> this guy isn't a barack obama. >> that's right, i'm not neither is he. >> reporter: biden, fourth in iowa and trailing in new hampshire polls getting emotional, talking about his late son beau and the fight ahead. >> i lost my son to cancer but i'll be damned if i stand by and lose my country. it will not happen >> reporter: amy klobuchar is gaining momentum after a strong debate performance >> do you need to come in th top three in new hampshire to stay in this race, senator >> i have no numbers where i want to be, except that i want to do well and defy expectations i have done that every step of the way. >> all right, kristen. everyone is looking at the polls this morning what are you seeing?
