In the last four years, the Department Reports that residential burglaries dropped by 40 . The chief credits his officers for remaining proactive in leaner staffing years. Nobody wants to do more than the men and women that wear this uniform. As we grow, we will be able to do more. Reporter home burglaries dropped. Violent crime has been increasing city wide. Robberies, assaults, all have risen steadily over the last six years. And the chief says all those numbers should realistically be worse given the size of his force. The fact that aggravated assault hasnt gone up as much as it could is because of the proactive work those officers do. Reporter the chief says san jose remains the biggest u. S. City with the knfewest number o officers on the street. The department is slowly rebuilding, and the more officers join the force, the chief says the faster the Violent Crimes will drop. For the most part i think san jose has been really good about it. I hear crime reports all the time and theyre quick to respond to them. A bizarre and tragic Home Invasion in the east bay ended with a man killing his exgirlfriend. Our sky ranger was overhead, and crews on the ground level as well in dublin, this was the scene on monagan street. Investigators say yesterday 28yearold woman knocked on the door of her exboyfriends home. When that man answered the door, she and another man barged in and pointed a gun at him. The homeowner shot at both of them. The exgirlfriend is dead, and the man she was with is wounded. Dublin police say this appears to be the case of selfdefense. The surf rough and dangerous along the coast fliern a woman, her dog and the rescuers who jumped into acto save her. That woman caught Half Moon Bay trying to save her pet. Nbc bay areas robert handa broke the story live from along the coast. Do we know how the woman is . Reporter well, she is doing better. It was a dramatic rescue that started so innocently. The woman who had to be pulled out of the churning waves was just walking her dog on the beach along the water, but this was not the day to do it. Our message is stay out of the water. Reporter almost every Emergency Agency in San Mateo County joined forces around noon at cal grant state park to save a woman who tried to rescue her dog swept out by waves. The woman was about 200 yards out. She had apparently gone in after her dog and she got stuck. She was still swimming when they rescued her. Temas crucial. Harbor patrol along with coast side fire came in on the water but said the fire, sheriff and park units observing some land guided them to the woman treading water. She was at the point of complete exhaustion. She started to go under water. I dove on top of her. Normally we try to stay on our machines. I knew i didnt have time for another wave to hit her. Got hold of her and relied on my partner to do what he does. Reporter the partner bobby dunn pulled them in and gave the woman credit. Pretty amazing she was able to stay afloat that long, was at any time 1234 very lucky. How tough for her being able to keep herself afloat that long. Reporter some observers were more critical. Reporter raj, we did just arrive on scene. I want to step aside so you can see whats going on. Traffic is moving down sir Francis Drake. But the cross street here is blocked. I just got off the phone with the c. H. P. And they tell me that there was a c. H. P. Pursuit of a suspect, but the officer is they tell me that it is the suspect, the person they were pursuing, who has died. What they are telling me is the car involved, the suspect vehicle, hit another car and that the person in that car is okay with minor to no injuries. But what theyre saying is this started with a be on the look out report tied to an assault and battery case that they heard about out of san rafael. Someone spotted the car involved in this area. Officers turned around, pursued the car. It rounded the corner rather quickly and hit another car here at sir Francis Drake. The officer slowed down. But again, this is the scene we are seeing out here now with this very violent crash. And again, one person dead. We are told that the officer is okay. The other person in the vehicle that was hit also minor to no injuries. But the suspect involved has died. Now, a spokesperson for the california Highway Patrol is on the way out here and we are expected to get another update. But this is the scene right now. Traffic moving very slowly. On monday, that green lexus was caught on camera going off a cliff at gray whale cove. Investigators are checking missing people and vehicle reports. So far nothing has come up. Wreckage was found there at the scene, but its unknown if that was from a previous accident. He lost his life chasing the thieves who stole his laptop. Tonight we are learning he died on his birthday. Friends telling us that the 35yearold worked in tech and was looking forward to celebrating a new years party at his house. Those who knew him and those who did not are coming to this growing memorial to mourn the man who friends say died on his birthday. His smile was the one thing is that stood out. Reporter its only been two days into the new year and already 17yearold kenzie is learning a lesson in how fragile life would be. This is a starbucks she would see her friend almost every week drinking his coffee and typing away on his laptop. So many people obviously loved him. Reporter kenzie said she saw the aftermaths of what happened on the morning of new years eve when they say police burst into the coffee shop and snatched her friends laptop. He leaped toward the get away card only to be dragged way and left for dead. He was from china. I know he went to graduate school at kansas state university. Saying oakland is trying to piece together the last 24 hours of his friends life. The two worked for a tech company in the east bay. The two were supposed to ring in the new year that night. That day we were going to celebrate new years at his house and we actually showed up at 7 00 and wasnt there. It started last night in a carport at an apartment complex just a few blocks from the san jose dmv. A bystander was able to put out the flames before the crews actually arrived. But when they did, they noticed suspicious cannisters and they say someone may have thrown a molotov cocktail into the carport. The building was evacuated. The bomb squad was called to investigate. Thankfully no one was hurt. Stepping up patrols, thats what police on the peninsula say theyre doing after a recent attack at places of worship around the bay area and the country. Last week someone opened fire at a church in texas killing three people. And over the weekend someone vandalized an africanamerican church in palo alto. This man is not so sure. His vehicle was stolen twice in a month. Reporter he bought a gray 2002 camper van almost two years ago. It is basically like a painters van thats been outfitted for more outgoing, like outdoorsy type activities. It has a popup roof and couch and refrigerator, kitchen. Reporter he said hed been parking the van on the street in San Franciscos due bose triangle neighborhood where he lived ever since he owned it. About two months ago in november, someone stole the van. Its a pretty distinctive vehicle. So if you know what youre looking for, it stands out. Reporter San Francisco police found the van a few days later after he filed a police report. And while the outside of the vehicle wasnt damaged, the inside was filled with trash, cigarettes and needles. About a month later before he said he had time to take any new security measures, the van was stolen a second time. This time in an open space area across the street from a corner store in the same neighborhood. I saw another car parked there. I knew immediately someone had probably stolen it, likely the same people. Reporter according to the San Francisco police department, car burglaries in 2019 were down 3 and breakins down 2 . In vons case, someone stole the whole vehicle. Hes still skeptical about the Police Departments statistics. A anecdotally the people i talk to, it seems to be happening more frequently. Well, turns out they tracked down their own stolen property online. Back in december of 2018, two tourists reported someone broke into their car in novato. The thieves got away with the camera and some electronics. A year later the tourists spotted the missing belongings online and, of course, for sale. They alerted novato police. Detectives met with the seller, got the equipment back. Detectives say the seller bought the goods months ago from someone else so they didnt end up arresting him. She is accused of starting of two fake Tech Companies as a visa fraud scheme. She is facing prison time and deportation. Our Investigative Unit first broke the stories last year. Now senior investigator Stephen Stock has the latest twist. What do you have, steven . Reporter megyn kelly huang pleaded guilty in federal court in chicago to conspiracy to commit f1 and h 1 v visa fraud. She now faces up to 46 months in federal prison when a judge sentences her later in march. Huang set up, owned and was listed as president of two fake companies, find dream and sanoka tech with addresses that had this shared workplace in mountain view. Youre looking at it. According to records, huang took in 1. 5 million from foreign customers, most of them chinese nationals who were University Students in the chicago area. They wanted to stay in the grad college. Some 2600 different students paid fine dream and the other company as much r fraudulent f 1 visa forms and employee records. We tried to reach huang several times including at her First Court Appearance at federal court here in san jose. Each time she declined to comment about her case. Following her arrest, we started investigating other Companies Listed by the department of Homeland Security as employing f1 visa holders and we found thousands of other f1 visa holders listed as employees and at least 13 Different Companies that our research showed were fake or fraudulent. Now the feds are investigating them. A few days after that story aired last december, one of those companies filed paperwork in nevada to legally dissolve. With november and december storms remember all the storms we had . They left plenty of snow. We have a snow depth here at phillips, depth of 33. 5 inches. A snow water content of 11 inches. And 97 of an average january. Actually would be hard to reed that with the brightness of the snow, small print. 97 sounds great, but thats for january. What really counts is how much snow is still around in april. Were at 44 of whats needed to fill our reservoirs with drinking water. All right. Jeff ranieri comes in. So with the pace that were at, what do you see happening in the next couple of months . Weve got plenty time to stay near normal and possibly above. We just need to get some more storms in here. And most of the state is droughtfree, just a little bit of some abnormally dry conditions right near the oregon, also california border.
