>> all right, tracie potts for us thank you. the fbi is expanding their investigation into the deadly shooting at the naval air station that left three people dead federal investigators say they are moving forward as if the shooting was an act of terror. they say the shooter mohammed alshamrani was a second lieutenant in the royal saudi air force and that he legally bought the gun he used in his shooting rampage we have also learned the gunman traveled to new york with some students >> reporter: well, the fbi still has a long investigation ahead they want to question any associates of alshamrani and they are asking anyone who has information to come forward. meanwhile people here in florida are beginning to say good-bye. as pensacola gives salute to its fallen sailors, more questions are swirling about the shooter, 21 saudi national alshamrani >> our main goal right now is to confirm whether he acted alone or was he a part of a larger network. >> reporter: while officials have yet to determine the motive, they are investigating it as an act of terrorism. alshamrani who was killed in a shootout with deputies walked into this building with a glock 9-millimeter handgun and was the only gunman. investigators say there have been no arrests in the case. but law enforcement sources tell nbc in the week leading up to the shooting alshamrani showed three fellow classmates videos of previous mass shootings over dinner >> do you believe that anybody knew about this attack beforehand >> i am not prepared as we continue to investigate. there are several students who are providing information. >> reporter: several known associates of his, also saudi students, have been restricted on base by their saudi commander. as officials investigate why alshamrani opened fire, we are learning more about those in his path 19-year-old mohamed haitham, a high school track star who just graduated boot camp. >> beautiful smile and always cared about other people >> reporter: cameron walters, at 21 he always dreamed of being a navy pilot and joshua caleb watson. in his final moments pointing first responders to the shooter. >> he is a hero. god bless his heart. >> reporter: all three receiving a heros' farewell, struck down in the battlefield of their own backyard >> they were all big military family and this is horrendous. >> reporter: and the remains of those three sailors were returned to dover air force base in delaware, something we typically see for servicemembers killed in war. now to a chilling story about an arrest made in california a 30-year-old man is behind bars after a video was discovered that appears to show a gunman practicing for a mass shooting nbc's kathy park has this report and a warning you may find the video disturbing >> reporter: this haunting video inside a san diego hotel room appears to show a man simulating a mass shooting targeting pedestrians below. >> ah, yes >> reporter: in the graphic roleplay posted online, you can hear the southern california man talking to himself in a troubling sequence >> what do you do with this?
