Bob redell joins us outside San Jose City hall how this may better protect renters out there. Bob. Reporter laura and scott, later today at city hall behind me, theyre going to decide whether or not to approve new fines for landlords who operate within the city limits much. This is to encourage the Property Owners to follow the law when it comes to how they treat their tenants. Landlords are required to provide a legitimate reason for not renewing a tenants lease. The city is considering a fine of at least 500 for those landlords who dont follow that socalled just cause eviction rule. Thats one of the fines that theyre considering. Some landlords say the new fines under consideration would create a financial burden for them and they believe the city should be focusing on the affordability crisis. Not them. The San Francisco supervisors rules Committee Approved new protections for them. Currently they can evict them without cause unless the building is more than 40 years old. The new law that needs full board approval would extend no cause eviction protection to renters in any building regardless of the buildings age from the moment they sign the lease. Reflect the moment that were in, which is a true affordability crisis. Its not about supply. Its not about what we build, when we build it. Its about can working class people stay here in San Francisco and be able to survive. This is a step in that direction. Reporter the San Francisco Apartment Association says that this proposal would add more red tape and make it more difficult for building owners to handle problem tenants.
