We were following the race Ariana Grande is endorsing you [ laughter ] so this is a big deal. [ cheers and applause why is a 78yearold politician connecting with all these Younger Voters that is a good question im still trying to figure it out. Ariana is not only a great entertainer, which she is. Jimmy yeah we were at a concert with her in atlanta just a zillion people there, gave a great show. But shes doing more than that she is a very socially conscious, politically conscious person and shes doing exactly what has to be done she is reaching out to young people, getting them involved in the political process and i think and at her concerts alone, she has registered 20,000 people to vote [ cheers and applause jimmy thats amazing and thats a big deal jimmy that is a big deal, yeah i know you are from brooklyn i am from brooklyn as well but i have a photo of you and your mom and your brother and theres little bernie right there. [ audience aws ] what memories do you have from brooklyn that kind of made you who you are. Because were from new york city. Very local show. Well, i grew up in a rentcontrolled apartment in the flatbush area of brooklyn. Our family did not have a whole lot of money and, you know, i think my politics came from the fact that our families struggled economically, you know, kind of every single day so i got a sense of what that struggle was about jimmy like give me an example. You would want to buy something but couldnt afford it the memories, you know, when you were a little kid, you feel these things very strongly my parents would argue about money. My mother, for example, who died very young, her dream was to own her own home and move out of the apartment and that was a dream that she never fulfilled. So, you know, the conflicts that take place between your parents, you know, when you dont have enough money is something that impacts kids pretty, pretty harshly thats whats going on all over the country today. Jimmy yeah, you were like that so when holidays would come, would you have a big holiday would you have a big thanksgiving would you have yeah, i mean, its not like we were poor, but its just that we were pretty solidly lower middle class and money was always an issue. My other memory of growing up in brooklyn is just being out on the streets all the time playing punch ball and football and basketball jimmy what is punch ball punch ball is you throw the ball up and you hit it it was a spaldeen, remember . [ laughter ] remember spaldeen . Jimmy i know spaldeen. Yeah, we lived with the spaldeens. And jimmy like stoop ball. We played stoop ball too. We played every game that you can think of we spent, you know, our entire lives out on the school yards or out on the streets. And we just choose up games and everybody knew how good everybody else was it was pretty good jimmy my dad has a bunch of stories of growing up in brooklyn and he was he used to sing doowop on the corners that, i did not do. [ laughter ] jimmy well, we have a microphone [ laughter ] well soon find out but no we didnt we played ball jimmy my dad was in a doowop group and he was also in a gang at the same time [ laughter ] so he would sing with these guys, and then, fight them later that night [ laughter ] so brooklyn. Thats growing up brooklyn. Jimmy thats growing up brooklyn, yeah can we talk about the impeachment . Because now, weve made it through the house. The trump impeachment. If it goes to the next level, it goes through senate, which means you have to get involved yep jimmy which means that youre going to miss youre going to have to get off the campaign trail a little bit. Yep jimmy how are you going to do that . Well, look, i have a constitutional responsibility i swore an oath of office and ill do my job i think this is a sad moment in American History because we have a president who is not only a pathological liar, not only a racist and so forth but i think is running the most corrupt administration in the modern history of this country and the house will do its duty and i suspect they will impeach him as you indicate. The trial is going to come to the senate and ill do my duty ill listen to the evidence. But as of now, i mean i think you have a president who has committed a number of impeachable offenses jimmy after what youve seen, the evidence, do you have a yes or no . Im going to listen my job is in a sense a juror in the senate to listen to the evidence but if you ask me today, i think he has probably obstructed justice in terms of the mueller investigation. I think he is probably guilty of violating the emoluments clause which prevents a president from enriching himself through the use of his own office i think he has used the office to enrich himself and his family, and lastly, of course, i think the evidence seems to be pretty clear that he has used hundreds of millions of dollars of military aid to the ukraine as leverage to get political dirt on an opponent, which is also an impeachable offense. Jimmy lets cut to some of your major points you make running for president. Climate change i do believe we have to do something about this jimmy, i dont want to get you too nervous or get the audience too nervous but with the signs jimmy when you get quiet, i do get nervous [ laughter ] all right, then ill be very quiet. What the scientists are telling us is, in fact, they have underestimated the severity and the speed in which Climate Change is damaging not only our country, but the entire world. And if we do not act boldly, and i got to tell you, we have introduced the most comprehensive Climate Change proposal ever introduced by a candidate for federal office, if we dont have the guts to take on the fossil fuel industry and tell them that their shortterm profits are not more important than the future of this planet, then i got to tell you, according to the scientists, the world that were going to be leaving our kids and our grandchildren is going to be increasing unhealthy and uninhabitable, and i think we have a moral responsibility to make sure that does not happen [ cheers and applause jimmy i know you have i know you have grandchildren and you told me earlier that you love them very much and that you love spending as much time theyre the joy of my heart jimmy yeah, and youre going to see them this thanksgiving im going to see all seven of them this weekend jimmy yeah, and so, this is a kind of a thing youre doing for them as well absolutely. And, you know, as a parent and as a grandparent and i just dont want any parent or grandparent to have to be in a position where 20 or 30 years ago little ones, your kids are asking you, didnt you know what was going on didnt you know what Climate Change was doing why didnt do you something about it when you knew about it i dont want any of us to be in that position. It is were talking about rising sea levels, which will inundate major cities in our own country and around the world before the end of the century. Were talking about more drought. Were talking about more extreme weather disturbances we are talking, jimmy, about the United Nations telling us that hundreds of millions of people will be climate refugees theyre going to be forced to leave the land that theyre on now because there is no Drinking Water there is no land to grow their crops and theyre going to have to go elsewhere, causing Incredible National Security Issues and wars all over the world. So this is a very, very major crisis and as president , you know, what i will try to do is to not only transform our own energy system, but lead the world because this is a global crisis, and maybe say to countries all over the world that instead of spending 1. 8 trillion on weapons of destruction designed to kill each other, maybe we should pool our resources and fight against our common enemy, which is Climate Change. [ cheers and applause jimmy another point you made is you want to have medicare for all yes, absolutely jimmy how will you do that how is that possible well, the question is how is it not possible . We are the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care to all people. We are now spending twice as much per capita as any other major country, including 11,000 on health care for every man, woman and child, and yet, we end up with 87 Million People who are uninsured or underinsured we end up with 30,000 people every year who die because they dont get to a doctor on time. We end up with 500,000 people going bankrupt because of medically related deaths can you imagine people going bankrupt because they were diagnosed with cancer . That is disgraceful. That is cruel. And what we are proposing right now is to start off with medicare, which is a very Popular Health Insurance Program right now. But you got to be 65 years of age to get into it and all that im trying to do is over a fouryear period is the first year were going to expand medicare, took out the hearing aids, eyeglasses and Home Health Care second year [ cheers and applause thats a big deal. Home health care is a big deal first year we lowered the eligibility age from 65 down to 55 next year, 45, next year, 35, and then, every man, woman and child has health care in this country as a human right. Im here with senator Bernie Sanders, everyone [ cheers and applause thank you again for being here we were just talking about medicare and you actually needed some medical attention yourself a few weeks ago tell me a little bit about that i was in las vegas. We had an event. And for the first time in my life i had to sit down i was just feeling very, very tired. And i felt this pain in my chest. Got back, we left the event and got in the car, and we knew something was wrong. We went to an urgent care place right near the hotel and they said, youre having a heart attack. We got to a hospital, very, very quickly and the care there was great the doctors were great and i had two stents put in because it turned out that one of my arteries was blocked up. It was a procedure, i guess, done about a million times a a year i was out of the hospital in 2 1 2 days, and i felt better ever since so weve been back on the campaign trail, knock on wood. Jimmy yeah full time the last couple of weeks. [ cheers and applause jimmy are you in general are you a Pretty Healthy guy or not really that was what is amazing. I mean, i thank god, i have been incredibly healthy. When i was a kid, i was a Long Distance runner. I was a good athlete so when they told me i had a a heart attack i literally could not believe it because, you know, i have had so much endurance and strength throughout my whole body but, you know, in retrospect and maybe this is a message i want to convey, listen to some of the symptoms that getting tireder than i usually was jimmy yeah so. Jimmy is it stress are we all too stressed out . I feel you read in the papers today and everyone is so stressed out people live in my building are so stressed out. Everyone i run into in the streets, stressed out. We are stressed out jimmy yeah people are for a variety of reasons, political reasons people are worried about the environment. People are worried about money and yeah, we do live in people work incredibly long hours. I dont know if you know we work some of the longest hours of any people in the world. So stress is a huge, huge issue. Jimmy did your wife say anything to you after the heart attack did she say, hey, bernie, maybe lets rethink well, she she was in vermont and i was in las vegas she didnt sleep all that night. She got on to the first plane that she possibly could and got to las vegas as soon as she could. She had hardly left me out of her sight since. [ laughter ] jimmy yeah well, i saw you. You definitely came back pretty quickly, cause we have we have a clip of you on the Basketball Court just last week and this is for real take a look at this thing. You know, thats totally fine. I was just content with like having a memory in my head, you know, to play with like Robert Downey jr. In the last scene, he was iron man on the last day he was iron man that was just like amazing jimmy really yeah. Jimmy what was it like to work with him . Oh, he was amazing. And its like, its an homage to Agatha Christie and the whodunit genre and its about this very affluent family called the thrombey family and their patriarch, their grandfather Harlan Thrombey dies and throughout the film its this you see all these little moments and different bombshells about the relationship in the family and kind of try to figure out who did it so its a bit of thriller, a a bit of comedy.
