Today, thursday, november 14, 2019 announcer from nbc news, this is today with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb. Live from studio 1a in taller. They were singing independence day, martinas song. It was pretty fantastic. Rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today on this thursday morning thank you for joining us watching that awards ceremony last night, seeing all those women across that stage just made you, like, sit up a little taller they were singing independence day, martinas song and it was pretty fantastic youre still on a natural high were going to have the latest on the entire show in a bit but lets start with the news and round one of the impeachment fight. Both sides digging in after the first public hearing in the investigation, making the case before the eyes of the nation. Were going to break it all down and there is breaking news just this morning in the democratic race. Another candidate enters were going to start with hallie jackson. Good morning reporter savannah, good morning. Multiple sources close to this white house are telling me they just dont think the public hearings so far changed many minds when it comes to impeachment. But democrats are pointing to a new piece of information thats come out, a phone call we hadnt heard about before, that they argue directly ties the president to a quid pro quo. New fallout this morning from that historic hearing. That is textbook abuse of power. Reporter democrats satisfied day one helped prove their point that the president abused his power by trying to make military aid to ukrainians contingent on a promise they investigate his political rivals the president was using his office and hijacking our Foreign Policy to benefit his campaign for election in 2020. Reporter but republicans argue the first public hearing changed nothing. Im looking for that smoking gun evidence of an impeachable, high crime, treasonous type of charge and i just dont see that. Reporter the most notable moment from the nearly sixhour marathon, that new revelation by bill taylor, the acting ambassador to ukraine, about one of his staffers. He says the staffer overheard a conversation in july in which President Trump asked his Eu Ambassador about investigations into the bidens and the 2016 election the member of my staff asked ambassador sondland what President Trump thought about ukraine. Mr. Sondland that President Trump cares more about the investigation of biden. Reporter democrats seizing on that statement, arguing it connects the dots directly to the president. What this call indicates as other testimony has likewise indicated is that instructions are coming from the president on down. Reporter President Trump says he doesnt remember it that way. I know nothing about that first time ive heard it do you recall having a conversation with sondland i dont recall, no. Not at all not even a little bit. Reporter republicans calling it just another example of hearsay. You didnt listen on President Trumps call and president zelenskys call . You never talked with chief of staff mulvaney thats correct. Reporter so we will see another public hearing tomorrow in the ousted ambassador to ukraine, marie yovanovitch, is set to speak about her experiences with whats been described as a shadow Foreign Policy operation in ukraine. But heres the thing next week may be even more important. That is because the Eu Ambassador, Gordon Sondland, is set to appear publicly remember, hes the one who was on the other end of that new phone call were learning about, the one the president says he doesnt remember so whatever sondland says under oath is going to be critical of course hes had to change his testimony a couple of times so that will be significant. Were joined by Kristen Welker the view from the white house is, nothing to see here, its a big yawn but there is this new piece of evidence that more directly ties President Trump, if you believe it, to this scheme to withhold military aid in exchange for investigations thats right, savannah, and that revelation about that phone call caught a lot of white house officials off guard. And they acknowledge its the wild card, even though theyre trying to paint yesterday as a, quote, unquote, nothing burger, youre hearing that from aides and allies inside and outside the white house. Theyre going to be holding their breath a little bit until Gordon Sondland testifies. President trump trying to say, i didnt watch the hearings, i heard there was nothing to them, hes trying to take a page from the bill clinton playbook and look president ial. He had that joint News Conference yesterday with the president of turkey, for example. Hes going to be on the road tonight in louisiana were watching his twitter feed, though, because that doesnt stop hes been tweeting about this as well on the other hand, this new piece of evidence, which has to do with a state Department Employee saying he overheard President Trump on the phone with Gordon Sondland, the Eu Ambassador, and asking about investigations how far does that really get you . Because you have a white house transcript of the call from the day before thats not disputed that shows the president asking about investigations so, does this really add much to it it does a couple of things. It bolsters that point, certainly. It also allows republicans to make the case that a lot of what youre hearing from these witnesses is secondhand information. And so, that is why the Gordon Sondland testimonys going to be so key thats why this broader picture that is being laid out by all of these witnesses, savannah, is key about this secondhand Foreign Policy channel all right, kristen, thank you so much. And we turn now to this major shakeup, breaking now in the democratic president ial race Deval Patrick has officially entered the democratic race for president. He announced the bid this morning in a Facebook Post following days of speculation that, yes, he may run. As you know, former new york city Michael Bloomberg is also a possible late entry into the field. Last week he filed the paperwork required for the democratic primaries in alabama and arkansas and this is all coming on the heels of a radio interview recently with Hillary Clinton where she was asked if she has ruled out a possible run of her own and here was the answer is look, i, as i say, never, never, never say never, and i will certainly tell you im under enormous pressure from many, many, many people to think about it but as of this moment, sitting here in this studio, talking to you, that is absolutely not in my plans joining us now is nbc news political analyst, former democratic senator claire mccaskill. Good morning to you. Heads exploding everywhere this is the time, almost three months until folks vote, where people are usually dropping out of the race, not dropping into it what is this turbulence mean you know, it is an unusual year this is very late for candidates to get in. Now, bloomberg has something going for him, lots of money Deval Patrick has something going for him. He hangs out right next to new hampshire. Thats where he is his base is so, not great news for Elizabeth Warren, and some might say not great news for joe biden, because he might try to both of them will try to grab some of that center lane, but its going to make it interesting all the way to the end of the early primaries. Its interesting because theres the question of can they pull it off . Deval patrick, close to new hampshire, maybe hell have edge there, bloombergs got the money but the other question is what does it say that there are these candidates that are looking at an already very crowded democratic field and saying, this doesnt look good, i dont like this. Savannah, were going to have ten candidates on the debate stage next week. We still have ten. So, when youre looking at ten candidates that are still debating on national television, you think, well, whats another one or two its not like we have narrowed the field in terms of exposure for these candidates to the top four, although there could be an argument for that. Because theres only four candidates that have remained at the top tier and that is, of course, mayor pete buttigieg, whos surging, joe biden, whos showed remarkable resilience, and of course the favorites of the progressive left, both Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren you said this could be potentially bad news for senator warren isnt it also bad news for joe biden if somebody like Hillary Clinton, Michael Bloomberg, and Deval Patrick all considered moderates, centrists, i think, if they see a path and they think they got to get in there, doesnt that isnt that kind after vote of no confidence in biden . Well, hes been getting lots of votes of no confidence by people who talk about politics but its if you look at his polling, while he is not stayed at the very tippee top like he was at the beginning, hes tell a poll a few days ago had him number one in new hampshire. You said Something Interesting to me a couple minutes ago but you think this could go all the way to the Convention Like maybe this race, this candidate gets nominated at the convention this might be one of those races, especially with steyer money and bloomberg money where there is competitive primaries all the way into late spring and with everybody taking a share of the votes, you could see two or three candidates viable going into the convention, which this time, is in july wow its going to be interesting senator mccaskill, always good to have you here were talking about this arctic blast that has shattered hundreds of midnovember records all over the country, some that have stood for more than a hundred years. Crystal gayle were going to talk about that just ahead. Good night for the women highlights and winners coming up first, lets start this half hour with other stories were following on thursday. The first public testimony in the impeachment investigation reveals a deep divide in Congress Democrats say the testimony revealed a striking account of President Trump abusing his office by holding up military aid and seeking investigations of his political rivals. Republicans say that the first two witnesses offered little more than secondhand stories if this is not impeachable conduct, what is im looking for that smoking gun evidence of an impeachable, high crime, treasonous type of charge that would warrant impeachment and removal of a duly elected president and i dont see that as for President Trump he told reporters at the white house that he did not watch the proceedings but he called them a sham a School Bus Driver in oregon is accused of driving under the influence and crashing with ten people on board 20yearold driver lost control of the bus, veers off the road and crashes into a ditch thankfully, nobody was hurt. Police dont think alcohol was involved but they charged the drive with operating the bus while impaired by a controlled substance. Now to what the future potentially holds for former nfl star colin kaepernick, out of the league since 2016 in the wake of his National Anthem protests the controversial quarterback is set to work out for teams this weekend, but could we actually see him back in football . Nbcs ron mott joins us with more on this one hey, ron, good morning. Reporter this is an unusual move, to say the least inseason workouts typically are quiet events that individual teams organize themselves and thats why Colin Kaepernicks tryout this weekend is raising a lot of eyebrows. A potential glimmer of hope for a former football star trying to make his mark on the field once again. Kaepernick is in the end zone reporter quarterback colin kaepernick, who has been out of the nfl since the end of the 2016 season, is set to work out for teams this weekend the unprecedented saturday session arranged by the league will include drills and an interview with video of both made available to all 32 squads. At a time when the kaepernick issue is gone, its over, its done, the nfls the one that dusts it off and puts it right back in the center of the table for all of us to Pay Attention to again reporter reacting on twitter, kaepernick writing in part, ive been in shape and ready for this for three years cant wait to see the head coaches and gms on saturday. But given its the middle of the season, few head coaches and gms are expected to attend in 2016, kaepernick quietly began kneeling during the National Anthem to protest Racial Injustice and Police Brutality and sparked a fire storm. Wouldnt you love to see one of these nfl owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say, get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. Hes fired hes fired reporter through it all, kaepernick was adamant that he just wanted a chance to play, even alleging the league colluded against him the two sides reaching an undisclosed settlement earlier this year. Kaepernick. Reporter at his peak, kaepernick was widely considered one of the most talented players in the league. But the timing of this weekends tryout has some scratching their heads. Like former teammate eric reid who joined kaepernick in protests and was part of the complaint against the league my guts telling me this is a pr stunt. Reporter some are questioning if rapper jayz, who signed a Partnership Deal with the nfl, is somehow involved in the surprise workout i think were past kneeling i think its time to go into actionable items. Reporter as multiple teams have already confirmed, their representatives will attend the highprofile audition. So, ron, you mentioned that there have been some questions, a fair amount of questions about the timing of all of this. Whats behind that skepticism . Reporter well, its interesting, craig free agent workouts for teams typically place early in the week normally on tuesdays, and that gives major Decision Makers a chance to attend but the fact that the nfl itself is holding this one makes it such a surprise this never really happens and it comes amid reports of a dispute between the league and kaepernick and sources are telling espn that kaepernicks team was reportedly promised a list of the attendees while the league has claimed or league has denied that claim so who will show up, we just dont know. A lot of questions still yet to be answered, guys. All right ron mott for us in chicago, keep us posted, buddy just ahead, the trend that is dominating the diet world yep, its intermittent fasting, folks, so what are the benefits . Does it work how do you pick an eating schedule and when can i eat today . Were getting those answers from dr. Oz this morning. Savannahs on that train. Life is better with you we are back this morning with an nbc news investigation and an ongoing look at this countrys vaping epidemic. Thats right, last week the cdc confirmed that crisis is continuing as of now, more than 2,000 people have become seriously ill and 39 have died nbcs Cynthia Mcfaddens been covering this story and investing possible causes. Cynthia, good morning. Good morning, everyone. Six weeks ago, right here on today, we first reported about the alarming level of pesticides found in black market thc oil. Last week, we returned to the same lab in los angeles, considered one of the top marijuana Testing Facilities in the world, for round two no one, not the fda or the cdc, has tested the actual thc vapor. People are sucking that stuff into their lungs well, this California Lab designed the equipment and the process for doing just that and gave us the first results. So were looking at an instrument that we had made to do our vaporization story. Reporter so nothing existed. You had to design this thing reporter aaron reilly is the president of cannisafe this is a pump system it does 3 seconds on, 30 seconds off, so it simulates taking a 3second puff from a vape cart. Reporter this is the first time the results of any thc vapor tests have been revealed to the public. Seven thc cartridges from licensed dispensaries and six thc cartridges from the black market were tested lets go through the legal ones first. They did not contain those highly dangerous chemicals that we see from the illicit market. Reporter period . At standard temperatures. Reporter and that is an important caveat many vaping pens allow users to crank up the heat that creates the vapor. And when they do, even Safe Products can become dangerous. Because the higher you crank it up, the higher you heat it, the more stuff gets released thats what we noticed when we ran all of the cartridges at a higher voltage, we noticed there were carcinogens in not all of them but most of them. Reporter unfortunately turning up the heat is popular with kids. The higher the heat, the bigger the puffs. And now, we know the higher the chance of carcinogens. And there are more troubling results when it came to the testing of the vapor from the black market thc cartridges. What did you find in the aerosol, the vapor that is actually being sucked into peoples lungs formaldehyde as well as other carcinogens and Carbon Monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Reporter thats right. He said cyanide. Not one of them was safe for consumption. Thats very fair to say every single one of them had something. Some of them had a cocktail of things that were wrong with them. Reporter two of the black market thc cartridges that they tested were counterfeit products seen here next to their legitimate counterparts. How bad were these, these knockoffs . The knockoffs both failed the baseline testing where we test for label claim, pesticides, heavy metals in addition, the vapor testing for the two counterfeit versions were actually some of the worst. They had significant levels of Carbon Monoxide, formaldehyde. Reporter they also tell us the illicit kingpin had cyanide in it. Thats really alarming because its confusing to consumers. They would be forgiven for thinking these were legal products if somebody gave it to you, it would be hard to determine. Reporter there is no legal product called dank vapes but according to the cdc, many of those suffering from vapingrelated illnesses had used this illicit product, which is very popular with young people how about the vapor testing of dank vapes the vapor testing was terrible again we found over seven pesticides in the dank vapes, significant levels of vitamin e and trace amounts of formaldehyde, all the carcinogens. Traditionally of all the testing weve done, dank vapes have been the first. Reporter but the prize for the most pesticides went to the vapor from this illicit thc cartridge, maui wowy essentially, youre vaping pesticides at that level, yes. If you look at some of the cdc data for fatal dosing, id be willing to bet that some of these are over what they would consider a fatal dose. Reporter last week, the cdc said they found Vitamin E Oil in the lungs of the 29 patients they tested. Its a socalled cutting agent used by disreputable people to reduce the quantity of thc in their product and make more money. Of the illicit carts, did all of them have some sort of cutting agent, something that was reducing the thc oil to put in cheap filler, essentially . Thats correct. Every single illicit cart either had a known cutting agent or there was an unknown flavor. Reporter they found Vitamin E Oil in five out of the six the bottom line . How concerned are you about whats in the marketplace right now . Im really concerned. I think its very confusing for consumers, and literally every single one of these products has something bad in it, significantly. Reporter seven months into what many consider a Public Health emergency, the public is clamoring for more information now, cannisafe told us they developed their test and analyzed the results in a month. Leading some to wonder what the federal government is up to. They sent the results to the cdc six weeks ago but never got a reply and last night they sent them this new report, the Technical Report of these results. Well let you know if they hear back what is the federal government doing reporter funny you should ask. We talked to the cdc yesterday who told us they are going to do vapor testing starting in the, quote, next couple of weeks and the fda told us they have received samples from 25 states, many of those too small to test. Publicly, they have said very little about the testing results they have done, though they say that 419 of the samples they have received contain thc, half of those were contaminated with vitamin e but what about all those pesticides yeah. Forgive the simplicity and maybe weve already covered this but are people smoking the black market stuff only because its cheaper . No, as we showed you, sometimes its confusing you dont know you dont know what youre doing. And you know how this works. People pass this stuff around. So, yeah, i mean, price is one of the points. Also, access to this in legal states, you can buy legal. In nonlegal states, you cant. But you know, word to the wise, if youre going to do this, do not use illicit brands all right thank you, cynthia cynthia, thank you. Time now for a check of the weather from mr. Roker thats right, guys, and bev weve been looking at this cold air but the Climate Change is part of this because of the global warming, it favors weather patterns that actually push that colder air down into the east but if you look globally, temperatures the cold outbreaks are relatively isolated. The majority of the planet is warmer than average and if you look here in the united states, over the last several decades, the record highs have been outnumbering the record lows, especially as you get into this time period by more than two to one. So we are seeing more warmer weather, even though we get these isolated cold outbreaks. Thats whats going good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Perhaps the biggest moment the revelation of a phone call that ties President Trump more directly to this Pressure Campaign on ukraine where the president was overheard by a state Department Staffer asking a top diplomat, Gordon Sondland, about those investigations, and then theres this conversation that followed. The member of my staff asked ambassador sondland what President Trump thought about ukraine. Ambassador sondland responded that President Trump cares more about the investigations of biden. I take it the import of that is he cares more about that than he does about ukraine. Yes, sir. President trump called the hearing a joke, says he has no memory of that call, which will make next weeks testimony from ambassador sondland crucial and testifying tomorrow, the former ambassador to ukraine, a woman by the name of marie yovanovitch. Also in 2020 news, another democrat is entering the race, the former massachusetts governor, Deval Patrick, this morning, announced his bid for the white house. Patrick is a longtime friend of president obama. He had ruled out a 2020 run late last year. His entrance comes just ahead of tomorrows filing deadline for him to get on the ballot for new hampshires primary. Savannah Peter Alexander, thank you. This morning this morning on todays talker, a decision by prince harry and Meghan Markle that has people talking on both sides of the pond bucking tradition, the duke and duchess of sussex have confirmed that they and baby archie will not be spending christmas with the queen kelly joins us with more on quite the holiday surprise huh, kelly reporter yeah, craig, this is a surprise. I mean, christmas is widely regarded as the queens favorite holiday, the entire family gets together for days of festivities, but not this year harry and meghan will be spending the holiday with meghans mom theyve been part of the royal family tradition, christmas in the country with the queen, for the past two years a lucky fan snapping this fab four shot, william and kate, harry and meghan, walking to church at meghans first royal christmas. But archies first christmas wont be in front of the cameras. A spokesperson for the duke and duchess of sussex announcing their royal highnesses will spend the holiday this year as a new family with the duchesss mother, Doria Ragland and this decision has the support of her majesty, the queen questioned whether its the sign of a growing rift between harry and his family hes only spent one christmas away from the queen, in 2012, when he was serving in afghanistan. But as the palace points out, its been done before. The year after william and kate married, while she was newly pregnant with george, the couple had a quiet christmas with kates family near london. Harry and meghan also announcing theyll be taking some extended family time. After a busy few weeks honoring veterans, meeting military families near their home in windsor, posting updates on meghans charity clothing line all after that whirlwind tenday tour of africa in september. Harry hinting then that the two could see themselves settling there with son, archie i dont know where we could live in africa at the moment, you know just come from cape town, that would be an amazing place. Reporter the palace isnt saying where the young family will spend the next few weeks n l. A. Where meghans mom lives, perhaps a White Christmas in toronto where they first went public as a couple in new york, where her friends famously threw the ultimate baby shower or holidays at home in windsor and royal christmases actually used to be held in windsor back in the 80s. In fact, harry made his royal christmas debut at windsor when he was just 3 months old, and speaking of royal babies, a new picture was released today of archie it was taken during his christening and it was actually a birthday message to prince charles. Thats his 71st birthday today prince harry saying, happy birthday, pa, granddad, and sir. Not in that order. You just missed the 41gun salute, and so did prince charles. If youre heading out the door, you can still take us with if youre heading out the door, you can still take us with you, check us out on sirius xm to your health this morning, a closer look at the latest diet craze to sweep the nation called intermittent fasting thats right. It involves eating only during specified windows of time each day. Were going to talk about the pros and cons with our man, dr. Oz, in a moment but lets hear from viewers and some members of our own staff who have been giving the trend a try ive been doing the tenhour window, eight hours a day. I intermittent fast from 12 00 p. M. To 8 00 p. M i cant do this whole day fast, i feel like it doesnt fit into my questioned i just started intermittent fasting and i got to tell you, i am starving. I like the fact that i dont go to bed feeling as bloated my clothes are starting to fit a little bit better. Theres some days i feel like i need to eat and some days i dont feel like i need to eat as much it definitely makes me feel like im, you know, fresh for the day. Ive been doing this for about a year and a half. Ive lost 30 pounds. I went from 245 pounds. Im currently 189 pounds ive lost 10 pounds and 3 inches in my waist i think it makes you a lot more aware of what youre putting into your body intermittent fasting has really changed my life wow just a few of them. Yeah. How do you figure out if intermittent fasting is for you in dr. Oz is here to help. As you know, carson and i decided to start experimenting with this a couple weeks ago so weve been trying to intermittent fast too. We have a lot of questions for you. Yeah. First of all, how do you pick . Im in my second week of it and im on a 16hour fast in an 8hour window of eating, so i eat from noon until 8 00 thats my window so, let me just take a step back religions have been touting the benefits of fasting for your soul for millennia but doctors for about a hundred years have known its good for mental health, it was good for weight loss, it was good if youre a diabetic, good for intestinal issues and the head of our medical unit wrote a great book, what to eat when which has been the foundation of what were talking about on the show. I dont want people being scared off. Ideally, you can hack fasting because who wants to starve themselves all lifelong, even though it makes you live longer, by using a 16hour fast which means basically 6 00 p. M. , you can start fasting, all through the night, sleeping, ideally, most of the time, then when you get up in the morning, dont eat. Dont eat when you first get up because most people arent hungry anyway. No one stops eating at 6 00 p. M thats unrealistic, a. I do. You get up at 3 00 in the morning. Were taught our whole lives that breakfast is the most important meal and this is counterintuitive that was a marketing hype, that you had to eat breakfast. The fact of the matter is, when you get up, if youre not hungry, do not eat until you are hungry and you can go 16 hours without difficulty but i got to say, i dont go 16 hours i intermittent fast. I go 12 hours. I stop eating my dinner at 8 00. When i get up in the morning, im not hungry, by 8 00 in the morning, i have breakfast, if youre careful what you eat, because you can eat a lot of stuff in those 12 hours thats left, you can do that 12 hours and it seems to work well, and before we get we have some ideas on what you could eat in your window but why does it work what is the what is the body process that happens that makes the difference youre tricking your body to go from ketosis to normal use of sugar back to ketosis so the body wants to use sugar but if you only use sugar you get fat and your brain doesnt work so well and your body begins to fall apart if you can half the time, be in a moment your body can zero out, reset, your hormones calm down, then it works and you asked me a very important question which i think well get to with hoda which is about what you can cheat in the time youre supposed to be fasting yeah, well, can you i like to put half and half in any coffee does that break the fast i have a tic tac we did an experiment. We took our medical unit, six people, energetic folks, had them fast overnight and gave them what you asked, two teaspoons of half and half, about 25 calories and it turns out just a splash of something in your coffee thats nothing. It turns out that for the first half hour, little bit of an increase in your sugar, not much and it goes back to this is an nbc news special report. Heres lester holt. Good day, everyone. Were coming on the report another school shooting. This one happening at Saugus High School in santa clarita, california. These are picture of students being evacuated from a school as authorities try to deal with the injured. The suspect were told has not been captured. Lets go to pete william right now monitoring details from his post. This happened half an hour ago, just before 8 00 local time in california. The shooting began inside the high school. As far as the number of gunshot victims, we dont know a confirmed number yet. It has been changing by the moment. There are gunshot victims. We have seen some young people being scenes like this of young people being brought out on gurneys, to be taken away by ambulance to nearby hospitals. So we dont have a confirmed number of people. The shooting itself at the high school as far as we can tell is over. And the suspect apparently fled the scene. Now, we have not gotten confirmation that the suspect has been captured. We believe that the authorities have a pretty good idea of where the suspect im going to say he is because were told its a 15yearold male who was according to witnesses wearing all black. A couple of nearby elementary schools, rosedell and high land have been put on lockdown and will remain on lockdown until the suspect is captured. As far as we have been able to tell from authorities theres one suspect here. The police are in charge of the response. They were on the scene very quickly. Of course, federal agents are responding as well. You see police and Sheriff Deputies on the scene leading the students away. A considerable amount of activity inside the school that we cant see as authority go goes authorities go and we have seen this unfold so many times they have to go room to room to make sure theres still nobody else inside the school that is a threat and get people outside and get them reunited with their parents. Saugus high school, its a suburb of l. A. , about 30 miles north of los angeles. And the search for the suspect is ongoing. We think as i say they know where the suspect is. And it appears that the shooting itself at least inside the school is over, lester. Pete, thank you. We have been monitoring coverage of our station in los angeles, knbc and obviously big concern right now is reuniting these children who have been evacuated with their families. You can only imagine the panic and fear among families as try to get in touch with their children. Lets go back to pete who has more information. Im told that we now have been told by authorities in california theyre saying seven people have been injured. Theyre saying thats the number theyre using. Seven gunshot victims. But again, that number is subject to change. These numbers typically change as the minutes go by because partly because of the reporting through the system, the Law Enforcement system, but partly because as they work their way through the school, they may find yet other victims. Thats just the way these things unfold. So we will see if these numbers change, they may go up or down. This is in an area that was affected by the brushfires a couple of weeks ago and the focus on the shooting that occurred at the Saugus High School in santa clarita, about an hours north drive of los angeles. As pete noted this shooting happened earlier this morning. There they have an idea who the suspect is, but they dont know where he is. Reported to be a 15yearold and so there is that hunt going on at the same time and i think many of you have certainly you can probably do the same gn narration im doing right now. The officials are making sure thats no other victims or a threat to students on the campus. We dont know much about the suspect other than his age. There has been a very, very vague description and thats, you know, being broadcast throughout the los angeles area. Clint van sant, former fbi profiler who has been with us through many of the School Shootings dramas joins us on the telephone. What are your first thoughts when you hear another school shooting, clint . Well, we have been through this many times. We have seen the results of recent studies that fbi and other agencies have done. When they have looked at School Shootings over the last dozen years or so, as one would expect normally theres a relationship between the shooter and the school itself. Were told by these studies that its usually an individual who, again, who has been bullied. Theres levels of anger, frustration, rage. The challenge, lester, is that we see every time in one of these situations its a situation of anger management. Its that where the system somehow we somehow, the schools, the family, have failed Young Children and they still see the use of weapons as a legitimate means of conflict resolution. Unfortunately we have more guns this this country than people so theres an availability of weapons and we have enough negative incidents of these taking place that its not very hard for someone to see the example of a previous shooting and then act out. I have been watching the broadcast on television and you see the response, lester. I mean, we have done this so many times, Law Enforcement can almost do it in their sleep. We see, 20, 30, 40 police cars are there and the response is very quick, but we never get there until after the fact and now were picking up the wounded as well as trying to find the shooter. All right, clint, we want to reiterate again the word were getting from authorities, seven people have been injured injured is the term that we are hearing right now. But theyre still getting a handle on it. You see more of the pictures shot a little while ago of the students being escorted out. There seems to be no panic or rush and clearly they have seen other kids like them in similar marches leaving campus after a shooting. It is but as we cover these things we know the we will always hear we never thought it would happen here and in fact its happened at Saugus High School north of los angeles. Seven people injured. Lets go back to Pete Williams who continues to monitor Law Enforcement sources. Pete . Right. The im sorry to be vague about this, but thats just the way these things go. The best information we have from the scene is that the authorities are saying they know of at least three of these young people who were shot. They say seven total injured. And as you just were noting, we dont know if that means four other gunshot victims or just four other students injured in the melee that may have resulted from the shooting. This Saugus High School is a it has an enrollment of about 2,400 students. Its about 30 miles north of los angeles. And the Authorities Say the shooting happened just before 8 00. Just so just about 35, 40 minutes ago and the police and the sheriffs deputies were on the scene very quickly, going room to room and deciding whether it was safe to begin to try to get the students out of the building. The apparent gunman here fled the scene quickly after the shooting started. And you know the clint was just talking about the research on these School Shootings. Just last week the secret service put out a report on School Shootings over the past decade or so and most are over within two minutes so this appears to be a situation like that. The gunman fled. The last word we had just a few minutes ago, lester, was that the authorities had a pretty good idea where the gunman went. Its hard to tell from this map or from this aerial photograph, but there are some hiking trails just outside the school. Im assuming thats whats you see sort of the upper left corner of the screen. And that is where they think the gunman fled and thats where the intense focus is right now. And for that reason, a lot of schools in the area are on lockdown until they get this suspect captured and confirm that they have got the right person. But the shooting at the high school itself as far as we can tell is over. Thats the scene we are seeing now. As the police clear the area. This is picture from a little while earlier of one of the apparent victims of today being put into the ambulance. They had even sent some helicopters there in case they needed to airlift victims out, but we havent heard that any of the injuries were serious enough for that, lester. Pete, you know these things happen and are over in a matter of minutes. We have covered it many times on nightly news how you would be hard pressed to find a school right now that hasnt developed a plan for this or yeah, hasnt drilled for it. Just frankly listening to the radio transmissions from the authorities on the scene it seemed very, very orderly in terms of how they were managing their response. So, you know, not only do they have plans but they actually rehearse and they drill for these things. Pete, one more time. The number of injuries theyre giving is in total, what is it . Well, again, well give this number, but obviously its the best information we have at the moment and and these things typically change. The authorities have said three young people shot, a total of seven injured. So whether thats four other gunshot victims or four people that were simply hurt in the evacuation and the scramble, i dont know yet. All right. Well continue to monitor the story and the focus is on finding the shooter and making sure he could do no more harm. Apparently, leaving on foot from this campus, the Saugus High School in santa clarita. The school being evacuated and from what we can tell in an orderly fashion. Police are now securing the area, probably going room to room as we have seen so many times before. Making sure that there are no other casualties or injuries related to this. We will often find cases of people who remain holed up, waiting for an all clear signal. So certainly they want to find those individual staff or students who might be in those situations who are waiting for the all clear sign to come out. As we noted, so many schools have practiced these kind of drills because of how common these sorts of things have become. We dont know a lot right now. As you have seen so many times before, these are stories that unfold slowly. Well continue to be here and i proof that advances in treatment have changed everything, thanks to a targeted therapy for her specific kind of lung cancer jill is living with the disease. At memorial sloan kettering, medical oncologist dr. Helena says therapies like these mean lung cancer is no long aeer a dh sentence. She showed us slides from another patient. This is your right lung and your left lung and you can see the lung cancer tumor here this is someone when they were first diagnosed with lung cancer and this is them three months later on treatment. Reporter all the white tumors, most of them are gone. Yeah. Reporter research is critical but funding doesnt come easy. While lung cancer kills more men and women than colorectal, breast, and Prostate Cancer combined, only 6 of federal Research Dollars go to lung cancer why do you think theres not so much money going into Lung Cancer Research . Its really the survivors of cancer that are the biggest fundraisers and i think, you know, historically, we havent had as many survivors that have lung cancer and i think that theres a stigma where people think if somebody never smoked, they would never get the lung cancer. Reporter when you were diagnosed, what was the number one question people asked you . Oh, i didnt know you smoked. Or, you know, how long did you smoke . Any other cancer, people say, i am so sorry. What can i do to help . With lung cancer, you are immediately put on the defense. Reporter jill has made it her mission to reduce the stigma around lung cancer and change peoples perceptions shes the former president of lungevity, an organization devoted to Funding Scientific Research i was diagnosed at age 52 i was diagnosed at 29 wow anybody could get lung cancer. If you have lungs, you are at risk if you can connect with someone who has had the same experience, who has walked in your shoes and can provide that for you, it makes a world of difference. That is a lifeline reporter jill and her husband of 24 years, jason, have four kids. Jills diagnosis still weighs heavily on them. I think about it every day. I mean, its hard not to when its this deep in our family i remember last year i had a big panic attack and i called you on my way back from class, hysterically crying, but i know youre a fighter and youre not going to let it beat you reporter there is some good news in the last three years, the fda has approved more lung cancer treatments than in the last three decades and that brings hope i never used to use the word, hope, in the same sentence with lung cancer because in my experience, there wasnt any but there is hope now. Its real hope, and its so real that i even decided to tattoo it on my arm as a permanent reminder she is so special according to the American Lung association, guys, every two minutes and 20 seconds, someone in the u. S. Will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and jill and so many other patients are arguing that at that rate, it should not matter if you smoked, if you didnt smoke, everyone deserves a cure for that disease. Jill lost her grandparents, her parents, is it clear theres genetics involved here you would think, right . And doctors believe probably there is but research hasnt caught up to that yet. There is no genetic test, like, say, the brca gene test for Breast Cancer that is able to distinguish whether you have hereditary risk in patients with Family History of the disease. So the best chance to fight lung cancer right now is catching it early for the warning signs. We put them on today. Com if you have kids, youre freaking out right now she got regular screenings. She got some early screenings, which is unusual and its part of why shes doing well really its the targeted therapies that we talked about that theyre able to now identify what kind of lung cancer do you have and then they can target medicine at that. But it is jawdropping that youre reporting 6 of research dallas are going to lung cancer even though it kills more people than colon cancer, Breast Cancer jill said shes had lawmakers say to her, why should we care funding in general for Cancer Research at the federal level is woefully inadequate and has been for a long time.
