Also, possible power lines down in the area. All units acknowledge life safety hazard. Reporter pg e had turned off power to much of Sonoma County already, to avoid one of its lines sparking a wildfire. But its own records show it didnt turn off power at that location until 9 48 at night. Thats 23 minutes after the fire was first reported. And seven hours after pg e ordered power turned off to surrounding areas. Pg e says that it kept transmission power on whole shutting power down on lower voltage systems. But last spring pg e crews found a number of problems on the highpower transmission lines that crisscross that area. Pg e reported most of those problems have already been fixed. But tonight were learning that pg e has filed a report with state regulators telling that there was indeed a problem with a cable. Its known as a jumper and it connects the cable to the to your itself and the lines. Apparently it had broken and it was only discovered when cal fire arrived and pg es own crews saw just simple yellow tape barring their entry. Thats where they discovered that this problem was likely in their own equipment and its unclear why they might have missed this problem when it was inspected just this last spring. Much more questions to come, im sure. Thank you. Well, where do we standing with the shutoffs now . Thousands of people are still in the dark but they are one step closer to getting some of the power back. Right now pg e workers are out inspecting power lines in all counties they tell us. Its going to be a nice day in San Francisco but we have some concerns. The fire danger lower now but theres another event coming up this weekend. We are putting all eyes on that wind as we move into this weekends forecast. So lets take you to that microclimate weather tonight. We do want to start off with live chopper video. Our crew in the control room is pulling this up and you can see theres plenty of smoke. The fire is very active as a lot of this smoke is blowing off towards the south and also the west. Extremely dangerous situation still in this area. If youre in geyserville and not decided to evacuate, you really need to rethink that because this next wind event coming in will be stronger. Lets bring you into the latest and you can see the fire growth again. It happened near the geysers and raced downhill with winds near 60 plus Miles Per Hour. A hot 91 degrees, wind gusts only 15 to 20. So we have seen that calm down. Tomorrow weve got a warm 93 and only wind gusts of 20. Again, its going to pick up. I want you to think about this fire and the potential spread of it. All it takes is a couple of embers and we could see it spread a lot more w that wind event this weekend in healdsburg, you have to think about your plan. Where would you go, what would you do if you were asked to evacuate . Al in calistoga, i know youre far away but there is the potential for this fire to grow so please start thinking about that now, especially in calistoga and healdsburg, the way the wind is setting up. I want to move it into the second part of this story and thats the air quality. Take a look at this air forecast for tomorrow. That is thicker smoke heading through San Francisco and possibly into san jose as we move into your friday forecast. Unhealthy air for everybody as we move into friday. So be aware of that. Put your air on recirculate and you might even need that n95 mask. What about the wind . Its going change and fast. Heres the deal. We get High Pressure building in on sunday and we get the storm system dropping down here across the west. This area of low pressure, this is going to race a lot of wind right through Northern California as we move into sunday. So i want to take you right into that wind forecast. As webad. Im thinking nothing really big is going to be happening. Watch once we hit sunday morning. Were talking about widespread 20le athe lower elevations. Higher elevations we could see it up to 60 Miles Per Hour sunday morning. Here is the problem, this sticks around through midday sunday right through the evening as well. Thats why that fire definitely could spread. I do see that wind calming down as we move into mondays forecast and were looking clear here in San Francisco. Temperatures for the inland valleys will go to 90 tomorrow and well drop with that wind moving in. Well drop to 77 degrees but sunday is a big focus for major possible problems. Firefighters know it, theyre talking about it behind the scenes. They have to get control of this over the next 24 hours or this could explode even more in size. Great. Thanks so much, jeff, for that update. Coming up, we continue to follow this fire. Well have another update of whats going on, the fire lines, and some dramatic pictures coming in from Sonoma County.
