eventually hit the low 80s today. i'll have more in a few minutes. mike, you have reports of a gravel spill in dublin. >> the same shot you saw, there is quite a bit of traffic flowing. this is not unusually heavy. as far as the volume goes i'm watching this area as you pass by hacienda and approach the dublin interchange west 580 reports of gravel in the roadway. smaller rocks onto cars of the roadway, you see traffic moving smoothly at the dublin interchange and starting in the altamont pass with a tad bit of slowing coming off the merge, a typical spot for a friday. light volume of traffic, we expect fewer issues with the traffic as areas started to restore power after phase two started recovery. friends in montclair, oakland hills. some in hayward still had power out 8:00/7:30 last night but we don't have any major problems. a smooth drive along the peninsula, toward the bay bridge, where we expect to see early slowing. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. breaking news we're coming now, a brush fire exploding overnight, destroying homes, threatening lives, in southern california. live video in fact of the fire from knbc's helicopter. it is called the saddle ridge fire, burning south of the grapevine along interstate 5. the fire is affecting the cities of sylmar, granada hills and porto ranch. >> this area of l.a. county did not experience any planned power outages like other parts of that county, so just like we're experiencing here in the bay area, we're seeing power outage in some places, other places no. so far, mandatory evacuation orders are in place for thousands of people, as you can imagine. let's listen in to our sister station's coverage of the fire right now. >> reporter: -- apparently right now it's laying low, giving firefighters a little bit of breathing room in order to try to evacuate homes of its west of here and set up a plan, but you could see how quickly this fire can grow, and intensify, and then the very next minute the winds calm down a little and now the fire is setting down just a little. we still have that large fire line here, this is in the granada hills area a little west of porto ranch but dangerous for the firefighters and these homeowners here in its path. >> meghan, we can see the smoke there blowing, as you mentioned, this is a wind-driven fire and we want to check in with meteorologist shanna mendiola, 27-mile-per-hour winds. you expect this to get gustier. >> right after the sunrise. if you look at the wind gusts the typical spots focus on the san fernando valley, valencia through the newhall pass, 37-mile-per-hour wind gust traveling through new jl hall pass into intern valley and drying out the area as well. sunrise 6:55 this morning -- >>s wi as we continue to check with knbc in los angeles this morning, the wind conditions are fueling that fire. we'll keep our eyes on that. the fire in southern california is the exact reason why pg&e says it turned off power to hundreds of thousands of people across northern california right here in the bay area as well. here's where it stands right now. >> pg&e says there's been significant progress in service being restored to bay area cities, nearly 312,000 homes and businesses across the state though remain dark, compare that to the nearly 747,000 originally impacted. the largest outages we're seeing right now is in the north bay, that's been true all along, and napa and sonoma counties. you remember they were part of the fir round of planned shutoffs. here is a live look at pg&e's power outage website, could you see pple, that's the areas still dark. pg&e says it will not turn back power on until later this morning, at the very earliest, so crews can continue to inspect the lines. if you're watching us on your mobile device, still don't have power, it's still going to be a while. this morning, people still remain outraged at pg&e for cutting off that power, something pg&e says may happen more when there are extreme fire conditions. >> "today in the bay's" roz plater is in orinda, where thousands are still without power, but not at the b.a.r.t. station. you're there live and there's some lights behind you. >> reporter: yes, there's light here at the b.a.r.t. station, although there are still traffic signals out on our way here, so still some power outages, and we're going to talk to b.a.r.t. passengers as they start arriving this morning to see what the temperature of them is. some are angry how this was handled. pg&e says as it becomes daylight crews will get out to the process of checking and rechecking lines and equipment as they move to restore power to the rest of the area. that could take hours, possibly longer. the company's new ceo apologized but he is standing by the utility's decision to cut power to hundreds of thousands of customers. >> i apologize for the hardship this has caused, but i think we made the right call on safety. >> reporter: the utility faces mounting criticism from customers and politicians, some calling for the company to pay for the costs incurred because of the shutdown. there is also new criticism brewing after a report in "the "san francisco chronicle" that just hours before the power shutoff some pg&e gas employees wined and dined some of the top customers of a sonoma county winery. the new ceo calls that a colossal mistake and tone deaf and promises something like that won't happen again. we'll have more coming up in the next half hour. for now we're live in orinda, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> thanks. we
