Another parent ordered to prison. This time five months in the College Admissions bribery scandal. From juror to jailhouse. The man serving jury duty forced to spend 10 days behind bars after he overslept. Playoff fever. In late night baseball action, the yankees past the twins while nationals used their arms to top the dodgers. The boys of fall are back at it again today saturday october 5th, 2019. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with sheinelle jones, Peter Alexander and dylan dreyer live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning and welcome to today and thank you for joining us on this saturday morning. A busy week certainly but good news at the end of the week that Bernie Sanders is back on the campaign trail. Scary news he had a heart attack. Dr. Oz is going to join us today. Nice to see him on the weekend. About what this all means. Its important. We can talk about the warning signs of heart attacks. Well have that coming up. First the latest on the house impeachment inquiry. The New York Times is now reporting that a Second Intelligence official may file their own formal whistleblower complaint regarding President Trumps dealings with ukraine. Meantime the heads of the house intelligence, Foreign Affairs and oversight committees, all democrats, issued a subpoena to the white house on friday demanding the release of a wide range of documents related to ukraine. Nbc news learned the cias top lawyer made a criminal referral to the Justice Department about the whistleblower allegation weeks before that complaint became public. Lots to cover this morning. Lets get straight to Nbcs Kelly Odonnell at the wows for us. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, sheinelle. House democrats are racheting up pressure with the power of subpoena to try to get the white house to turn over documents as repeated attempts failed. The credibility of his unnamed accuser. A second official may be ready to provide backup. Could a second whistle be ready to blow against President Trump . The New York Times reports another official with more direct knowledge of events is weighing a separate formal complaint. The paper c. I. T. E. S. Two sources pleased on the matter of a white house under pressure and now under subpoena. Shifty shift. Reporter while the president mocked one of his impeachment adversaries. He lies like a son of a gun. Reporter the Committee Chairman, we deeply regret the president has put us and the nation in this position, accusing of stonewalling. His actions have left us no choice but to issue this subpoena related to efforts to get ukraine to investigate joe biden and hess son. The white house responded, this subpoena changes nothing. The president did nothing wrong. Im only interested in corruption. I dont care about politics. I dont care about bidens poll texas. Surrounded by reporters in los angeles, biden shot back. All this talk by the president of corruption comes from the most corrupt president weve had in modern history. Hes the definition of corruption. The president dismissed the impact of newly released Text Messages. Sir, can we talk about the Text Messages that included a visit to the white house. Reporter state Department Officials who floated a white house meeting if ukraine cooperated. Included was a visit to the white house. Reporter the president used his hand to blount questions. Theres no quid pro quo. Said that. Reporter other developments in the impeachment inquiry. The Intelligence Community inspector geral testified behind closed doors friday about the whistleblower complaint. For the First Time Congress requested the Vice President turn over his documents about his own ukraine contacts. The vps office called that another attempt by the do nothing democrats to call attention to their partisan impeachment. And in a separate development that the white house will certainly be watching, ukraines top prosecutor has announced on friday that he will do a review of past investigations including one involving the company where hunter biden served on the board. This is being described as an audit of past cases that could be completed by next month. Peter, sheinelle. Kelly odonnell at the white house. Thank you. A lot of moving parts. Were going to try to break it down for you. Bring in news analyst matthew miller, a top Justice Department official during the obama administration. Matt, the Mueller Investigation took two years but this inquiry is escalating in a hurry. Lets catch people up here. The week started with President Trump demanding to meet the whistleblower. Then on wednesday at that contentious News Conference, the president brushed off a crucial question about what exactly he wanted ukraine to do about jihadi and hunter. The next day on the private lawn President Trump publicly urged china to investigate biden. House democrats from three committees subpoenaed documents from the white house. Now overnight, of course, the Second Intelligence official, a possible new whistleblower has reportedly spoken to the Inspector General about the president s actions regarding ukraine. Matt, the question for you is, how valuable would another witness be, especially if this person has more direct information about what happened as the times reports. It would be critical. If you read the whistleblowers complaint, first whistleblower, Tropical Storm multiple officials that raised red flags to him about misconduct inside the administration. They attacked him as not having firsthand knowledge. There are a number of witnesses who could come forward. If theres a second whistleblower that comes forward, i think that raises the question if there are more witnesses. Presumably both would talk to the Intelligence Committee and provide names of individuals who could provide further evidence of misconduct by the president or others around him. On that note we just talked about the fact the president publicly called on china to investigate bidens dealings and he did that in front of all these reporters on the south lawn. I guess the question is on its face at the end of the day, its asking a Foreign Government for assistance in an election. Its illegal. It is. It is a crime under u. S. Law. By most accounts constitutional scholars an impeachable offense. I think the president s brazen call in public for not just one country but a second country to interfere in the election similar to 2016 statement, russia if youre listening moment. Were not just looking at his past conduct, president zelensky in this month long effort to get them to investigate joe biden but raises the question if hes google to keep inviting foreign intervention in an election. As long as hes president whether we can have a free and open election if there are other countries invited to investigate his opponent. Related to ukraine, according to messages, top diplomats appeared to view it very differently. How damaging are those Text Messages. I think they are incredibly damaging. Kurt volker, the president s envoy to ukraine made it clear theres a direct quid pro quo, if you want pa meeting, something they wanted for a variety of reasons, you need to announce these investigations publicly. Another official seemed to think there was a quid pro quo for the ukrainians to get aid only if they announce investigations. You have direct evidence of the thing the president denied. Thats problematic. The republicans say the bar is not inviting a government to interfere but if theres a quid broke quo. We saw evidence of quid pro quo in these messages. Cant say we dont live in interesting times. Thank you very much. The man who hopes to be the next president of the United States is out of the hospital. Bernie sanders on the mend after he suffered a heart attack on the trail. Nbcs sam brock is here with more on whats next for the senator. Sam, good morning. Reporter sheinelle, good morning. Reporter tweeting out this video with a promise. Ill see you soon on the campaign trail. Reporter a far cry from a snapshot taken this week. Yesterday we announced at this point in the campaign. Reporter supporters saw the normally buoyant sanders leaning against the podium and removing his jacket before finally taking a sheet. The Campaign Calling the condition a blockage in one artily before later clarifying it was a heart attack with two stints. Quick recovery, minimally Invasive Surgery accomplished quickly and has fantastic results. But we must do more. Reporter sanders has his eyes set on the nex democratic debate in two weeks. Despite the medical scare, his campaign has incredibly healthy fundraising figures. Leading the president ial pack with more than 25 million in the Third Quarter outpacing former Vice President joe biden by more than 10 million. Sanders now hoping for a similar surge in the polls as the primaries quickly approach. Senator sanders has promised to release his medical records before the primaries begin in february. Hes 78 years old. Now, for context. Joe biden is 76, Elizabeth Warren is 70 and President Trump is 73. Sheinelle and peter. Sam brock, thank you. More on senator sanders heart attack and the warning signs everyone should know. Dr. Oz joins us in the next half hour. Certainly good to see hes well now.
