Climate Crisis. Its not your imagination. Fires are larger, faster, and there are many more of them. The california wild fires. Tonight we take a closer look at whether theres a
Climate Change connection to what were seeing. A meteorologist joins us now with the closer look at the numbers and
Science Behind this. When you take a look at the states top 20 wild fires, we quickly see of those top 20, 75 of them have occurred since the year 2000. Thats an amazing statistic that has been driven in large part due to gradually warming temperatures across california, specifically going bah k to 2000. Youll notice californias average temperature since 2000 has been steadily on the rise including the last five years seeing the warmest temperatures since 1960. We thought we would ask the experts who have been on the front lines for many of the states largest wild fires while gathering research. Are the trends were seeing both in temperature and number of wild fires expected to continue . Particularly weve seen our fire seasons expand into earlier spring and later in the fall. And this is been attributed to
Climate Change. So, the next 50 years in california, we should expect increasing fire frequency and larger fires. And this has been attributed to the climate simulation showing its going to be warmer and drying. And warming conditions and drying conditions effect the fuel which then effect the extreme fire behavior. And as dr. Clemons mentioned that is the future were looking at. But short term you might have foets hadded that this summer things have been a different story. One look at the
California Drought and this shows the reason why today compared to the same time last year for the first time in most of the 19 years since 2000, most of the state is without major drought. That combined with late spring rains helped suppress fire danger for this particular summer. What were likely to see is some of the larger fires including the thomas fire, the second largest, that happened in the middle of winter, december into january. That likely to happen more often as the higher frequency is seeing extended droughts, part of californias climate future. Were seeing forest oloss and warmer than average temperatures, the trend since 2000 both day and night giving the massive wild fires 24 hour cycles both day and night to grow larger and faster. Now, for more information on the worst of san jose state fire lab has been doing go to the climate in crisis page at our website. Now all week were going to continue our look at the climate in crisis, on air, online. Tomorrow well look at how the bay area is turning farm waste into power.
