Morgan, good morning to you. Reporter it certainly is because dorian was such a slow moving storm, parts of the bahamas got pummelled by those Hurricane Force winds for more than 24 hours. The good news today, conditions have finally improved to allow coast guard crews to rescue those people from what theyve already seen, it is simply unprecedented this morning, death and destruction in the wake of dorian the massive storm pummelling the island of grand bahama and its largest city, freeport the water is about 6 feet. Reporter after leaving the Eastern Island of abaco in absolute ruin. It is disheartening were fighting a war with the enemy having all the weapons at its disposal reporter the storms relentless advance lifting cars. Complete devastation. Look at the cars, man. Reporter flooded streets and waves inside peoples homes. Literally in the ocean. Reporter in this incredible video this is deep ocean in our yard. Reporter freeport resident dave mackie reports the storm surge swirling around his home, now an island. The waters still rising. Just pray for us, that the water does not rise up anymore reporter the nations Prime Minister aware that many are stranded on grand bahama. As the weather lifts, and we can mobilize teams into those areas and bring relief to them reporter on monday, the government announcing at least three people dead on abaco with rescue operations under way. American coast guard choppers assisting in the rescue. Despite the damage and loss of life, the Prime Minister says there was one thing the storm cannot and will not take away. We are a resilient nation, a hopeful nation we Work Together for the families in isolation. Reporter so far, coast guard tells us theyve medevaced 19 people from Marsh Harbour or abaco island here to the hospital in nassau, where theyll start receiving medical treatment, and guys, those rescue efforts are ongoing as we speak. Savannah, hoda, back to yo morgan chesky, thank you. With dorian dangerously close to the u. S. , many in the southeast are watching for the storms arrival. Craig is right there in jupiter, florida, for us. Craig, good morning. Reporter good morning, my friend heres the thing, folks in florida have been preparing for dorian for almost a week now evacuations, of course, have been ordered businesses have been shuttered a lot of concern here about complacency. Officials are warning, this is no time to let your guard down this morning, Hurricane Dorian is crawling closer to the u. S. Mainland the anxiety levels are really high reporter local mayors telling us residents are taking this monster storm seriously our preparation has been, i think, top notch the people who were advised to get out of the evacuation zones, by and large, did they heed the warnings . All indications seem to be yes. However, our biggest concern at this point, since the storm is moving so slow, is that complacency will set in. Reporter in costal communities along the southeast, an exodus is under way im worried about the flooding at this point reporter more than a Million People on the move from florida through georgia and South Carolina, driven by mandatory evacuations. Savannah, georgias, mayor urging residents to go while they still can. Doesnt take but one time to lose your life. Reporter South Carolinas governor insisting no one should wait toll to evacuate. Predictions have wind, water, hurricane, going one way or the other, nobody knows. So be safe. Reporter residents of lowlying charleston not taking chances, already boarding up and stocking up on sandbags to hopefully keep dorians expected storm surge at bay back in florida, getting out by air is getting harder. Airports in ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and orlando all shut down more than 120 shelters filling up with people who decided it is just too dangerous to risk riding out the powerful storm at home im more scared about this one than ive ever been one in florida before. Reporter dozens of medical facilities and Nursing Homes in the storm zone rushing patients to Higher Ground and power crews are staged and ready to roll. Along with 4,500 members of floridas national guard. So this is a board thats going to give us a live feed. Reporter if the storm hits West Palm Beach, new state of the Art Technology will pinpoint where help is needed. The pictures they take and the information they write down, were going to get live time, so we can start pushing resources to them quickly. Obviously, there is the fear that people will look at the storm track and think, well, maybe i dont have to leave. Are there other things local officials are really worried about . Reporter two things primarily. One, as you can see, the winds here have started to pick up. When those winds pick up, of course, trees come down and so do power lines. Theres a tremendous amount of concern about power outages. Also, storm surge, as well, as al reminds us from time to time. Thats always one of the Major Concerns in storms like this, when the winds meet the high tides. You have storm surge that really wreaks havoc. In addition to folks not heeding the evacuation warnings, guys, one of the concerns is that folks will start to return to their homes and businesses before local officials give them the okay. Craig, thank you very much. A lot of people want to know where the storm is headed. Al is in the with the track. Thats been the frustrating thing. It has been stationary almost 24 hours. This live radar, including our wtvj station in miami. You can see right now that the western end of this is raggedy looking. The dry air is weakening the storm. Here is the latest as we put this in motion. You can see we are looking at showers and thunderstorms now wrapping around this system. The latest locator from the National Hurricane center, it is 110 miles east northeast of West Palm Beach, florida, 120 Miles Per Hour winds, and it is stationary. Heres the latest as far as the watches and warnings. Weve got hurricane warnings now from jacksonville and just north of there all the way down just south of West Palm Beach and inland weve got Tropical Storm warnings as well as the hurricane warnings continue through the bahamas. Heres the track, by tomorrow morning its a category three storm with 120 Miles Per Hour winds. It runs along the coast. By wednesdayr thursday morning, its along between savaah and charleston, and those winds will be bringing in that storm surge, and then by friday morning its just off the coast of North Carolina and then continues to rocket on through and out into the atlantic, but just south of boston there within that cone of uncertainty. Why has it been so slow . Look at this between friday and saturday, 250 miles, 210 miles between saturday and sunday by monday it had traveled 140 miles, and then takes a look at what happens. It just kind of comes grinding to a halt between monday and today only 20 miles. Why . High pressure has been dominating pushing dorian rapidly west, that high pressures beeing and theres been nothing to pick it up until this trough of low pressure and jet stream picks it up theoretically and shoots it out. But until that happens, we still have to worry about everybody within that cone, especially along the southeastern Atlantic Coast until it gets picked up and finally starts its forward movement, which we expect later today, guys. Al, thank you. The other big story were following this morning, that horrific fire on a dive boat off the sohe california coast. Overnight, a somber update. Search and rescue crews have located the bodies of even more passengers. Nbcs Gadi Schwartz joins us from the harbor with the latest on this. Hi gadi, good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah, this was the home port for that 75 foot boat, the conception. It was usually berthed right here in this harbor. Instead today weve got a memorial with candles, people leaving flowers overnight. The dive community here leaving a flower. Just off the way here, you can see there are two sheriffs boats there getting ready to go out and assist with the recovery effort, but the loss of life out here absolutely staggering. 25 people dead, another nine people that are still lost and presumed missing. All of them presumed to have been trapped underneath the bottom deck of that boat, and the only people that were able to make it out alive were five members of the crew that were able to escape in a small inflatable raft. This morning witnesses are still in shock, this chilling call for help heard over an emergency radio. The 75 foot diving vessel, the conception going up in flames early monday morning off the coast of californias channel islands. Its just horrendous. I mean, i cant imagine, you know, those poor people had to have been just a horror. Bob hanson had been sleeping aboard his boat, the great escape when he heard banging on the side of his hull. I hear somebody pounding on the boat and yelling, i open the door and the five guys are there in their dinghy, theyre asking me to help them and their boat is just, you know 400 yards away fully engulfed. Four crew members and the captain of the conception managed to escape the inferno, but underneath the deck were 33 passengers and another crew member believed to be asleep when the fire broke out. Did they say anything about their passengers . They said all of them were underneath. They told me then that there was another exit but that that exit was also blocked. So there were two ways out . Yeah. But both of them were blocked . Both of them were blocked. Reporter the boats location made it difficult for responders to reach, the coast guard calling all boats nearby to help. Any vessels in the area that can lend any assistance, please do so. Could you guys hear anybody calling for help, or was it silent . Silent. Except the sound of the fire. Reporter the coast guard says prior inspections show the conception in full compliance with safety regulations. This is probably the worstcase scenario you could possibly have. Reporter photos show the cramped sleeping quarters below deck. I could see holes that there was fire on the other side of that window. And thats where the people were . Yeah, yeah. Reporter this morning as the grim search for the missing continues, many are praying for a miracle, but officials are preparing for the worst. I think we all should be prepared to move into the worst outcome. Reporter now, so far authorities have not released any of the names of the victims. They are still working on notifying next of kin. However, we did ask the captain of the great escape about what those crew members said about the passengers underneath. They were absolutely inconsolable. The captain said that they that one of the men said that his girlfriend was trapped below deck. Another said that they had just celebrated the birthdays of three different passengers underneath the night before. One of them was a 17yearold girl who was on a scuba diving trip with her family. Still, no word on what may have caused all of this, but the ntsb has sent a team of 16 to assist in this investigation. Last night a scare that sent passengers running from the terminal dont run too fast. The panic was sparked by a Flight Attendant who became nervous after a conversation with a couple of passengers. More than 150 people fled the area some even left their luggage behind after a few minutes the passengers were allowed back into the terminal. It was determined there was no threat all passengers and employees were rescreened as a precaution. You guys want to talk tennis of course we do. Another exciting day at the u. S. Open right here in new york were going to start with the big upset, though, the womens defending champion, naomi osaka going for 11th consecutive win at the open dating back to last year, but it was Switzerlands Belinda Bencic it was 75, 76. Threetime open champ rafael nadal, look who was there to cheer on rafael, none other than golfer tiger woods. Stop. Yeah, the 15time major champion just getting pumped as nadal, who was really killing it on the match there after it was over nadal said hes never really had idol, but if he had to pick one, it would be tiger can you imagine . The pressure. You look up in the stands and theres tiger rooting you on. I think my palms would be sweating it would be the end of the match for me. Coming up, theres another player at the open, i watched so much tennis on my time off. This russian player, Daniil Medvedev, a bit of a bad boy of tennis, but its working for him at the open. Well talk about how hes kind of embracing that role of villain. I want to watch him play. Mr. Roker shes here. Hi. Look at that face oh, oh.
