G20 summit this weekend. Our eyes are on two of them. The United States and china. President trump and xi jinping face a trade war. The talks may be at the conference in japan or in beijing. Vm wares operating officer is back from china where he hosted the for rem, pooden is joining us right now. Sanjay pooden is in charge of all of em. I want to go in with you on your most recent trip to china. In the hotel bar, you are talking for those who work for your company and those who dont. What are they saying behind closed door . Yeah, thanks scott for having me on the show. I think it was important that the executive theyre getting a sense of whos going to show up here. I went there to reassure our employees and then partners with customers that we are committed to our customers there. It starts with that. Well, we got to comply with u. S. Law which affects certain partners. There is a vast number of other partners that we want to reassure. Tell me what you want to reassure them. I am talking about the grand ler level. How do you explain whats happening here in the United States and whats going on in beijing . First is they want to know if they have a job. Are you going to fire them . It all starts withyeesou there. That was important. Thats the top concern. I am going to do a call this evening with those employees again. With partners and customersh go . Are you building prodts that is are specific to us. Are you going to abandon us . Sa interesting to me right now of the environment we are in is wth kats the world, there is a u. S. Story and a china story. The huawei situation i have not seen anything in between the two narratives as strong as this. There is outrage in china and there is it is causing, you must get on the ground there, people must be saying to what is the u. S. Doing . What are you doing this to our country . It must be deep in your organization, how do you respond to that . The chinese i found to be measured. We found them very measured and they understand. To every customer in partner there. Those part that is are software, we have a better solution so we can show those customers where we over laps a. For many customers and partners who dependant on other parts of other technology staff, the most important is assuring them that we are going to support them and the software will continue to run and well be with them through tough times and good times. There will be so many different segments. With apple of the 20 of revenue comes from china and yours is about 11 . Less than that. We are not expose to some of the Hardware Company. I thinksemiconductor and stocks are surging and based on movement and micron and huawei and the Chinese Government can insist the u. S. And lifting the band. I am wondering if thisn thet company. There is an opportunity for cisco that omnivocompetes with. It is a terrifying moment. For employees, well make sure we take care of them. We are not as exposed Hardware Company. We have more opportunity. It is important to us that we dont animate the u. S. Government. The last tihing we want to do i having the u. S. Government think we are not complying with our federal business. We got to mistake sure first off we are not doing anything that takes a critical we are ensure we are e. Complying with the u. S. And as well as huawei and others and serving our customers. I hope they will, as we were talking about exposure, obviously if you were to lose your access to china, theoretically, whats the opposite . Whats vm ware exposure as far as things coming out of china . Would you be affected . We are not as exposed and source a lot we have chinese employees there who are building. We are not a Hardware Company m. Now we were told that we cant employ anybody in china which i dont think well get to. From the standpoint of the fact that we can hopefully and we want to do business there and you know thats important to us. And flipping it the other way, the other question coming out of the trade talks that are going on is whether access to local markets will be opened up for Companies Like yours. When you think of the Cloud Computing marketchina. It is very under developed comparing with the u. S. And most of developing world. There is a mave american compan sougt view, you are looking at a huge market, how do you assess that right now and where is the upside for you coming out of these talks . Richard, thats a good point. One of the things that benefit us, we dont fly as high as some of the big Consumer Brands in terms of getting secondly, we are sort of a Software Provider to in clouds. Many of our providers in china can use our software. We announced with alibaba, theyresucc thesful Cloud Company in china. So the key is when you think about many of these companies, huawei, many ware customers. We continue to serve those customers, there is an option for us to play in the Cloud Computing growth and china in a positive way. And for alibaba and other private clouds can be successful in china as it is for azure and google in the u. S. Others and i am thinking of apple which is increasing looking into services and being less reliant on hardware size. Do you see other companies starting to slowly pivot to different alternative, less dependant on china . I cant give advice to every company. The hardware economies have to think about my advice is first off you got make sure diversity f for software, you have a little bit more exposure to other country because the china still. Penetration. Software is still early. The hardre sales force and adobe and these are all successful. We are still seeing a lot of opportunity and china is not another country well have a lot of growth in other regions. Sanjay, i only have a few time left. You have offices in beijing and hong kong. We have seen a lot of interesting stuff in hong kong lately. Do you notice differences in the employees between the two and how they approach business . There are certainly a little bit more of a western influence among hong kong. I think in the millennial generations, scottsm the worl flat. I think the Chinese Students i talked to in their 20s, you cant talk if they have grown up in American University hong kong, they speak fluently and they think very much like the Tech Companies of today. Those barriers and differences starting to change. The older generation with folks in 40s or 50s, there is a difference of our folks in hong kong and china. Speaking of the world, i know you are a huge cricket fan. The insect of the game. Yes. Without going into detail, if i tune incorrect ketel marte c watching. What should i be watching for . It is the one sport, india and pakistan and many countries that have the mostomel. It is a game and it is baseball. You run in four bernard jamease. Nothing extreme. This game is longer than baseball. All day or half day or five days. I once watched one game when there is no winner. Go watch the game. Can i Say Something . It is essentially baseball with better mounds. Watch the game this weekend. India and austria. Two best teams going on. The best time to learn. Watch the game, you will learn a little bit. Thank you very much sanjay poonen. There are 50 ways to think like amazon on press here. Welcome back to press here, about half the stuff you see on amazon is sold through a Company Called marketplace. Those are third party vendors, mom and pop shops. About 50 of the goods moving into amazon belongs to somebody marketplace. On gets a cut. C o he wrote a book, think like amazon, what would jeff do . Jeff is jeff bezos, thank you for joining us this morning. Scott, thank you for having us. I realize you wrote a whole book about it. What are the top key things that we need to know what jeff bezos does and will do. That question from me is a proxy for all the questions i get asked by executives and teams that are figuring out how to compete in the digital era and how do i compete in amazon and how do i make the Customer Experience better and strategic asset. Those are all things that jeff does on a very consistent bases. Now you started this marketplace, this open up amazon to a tremendous number of third parties, i nk how often theyre b something on amazon but not necessarily from amazon. Thats right, party s semiing lling at amazon. Com, the whole goal i nc third party as you were from buying from amazons retailer. John, i realize you are not have amazon but you talk about them at great in your book. Amazon is able to see what Third Party Sellers are selling and jump into that marketplace because amazon got the data and the minute they see that a small bike shop in dayton, ohio is selling an interesting bicycle pedal or Something Like that, amazon is able to jump into that because they see the data. Yes, i dont think it is so much seeing what a seller is seeing but seeing what the customer is looking for and what the trends are. It is very true that amazon has launched a large number the cus provide great selections and different options for them. Do you think amazon can ever get too big . Amazon is a big cnglomerate. There are so many businesses that amazon is in, retailer and marketplace business. Amazon web services and logistics businesses and devices. Today is a conglomerate business. I think any business size brings complexity and size brings the need for over site and so i do think that scrutiny on all of these Large Companies needed. Should we think of amazon as an operating system . Certain parts of it is an interesting question. Certain parts of it i think do have some of the essences of an operating system. I think some of their supply change capabilities where they are providing tools to othe sellers to help managen stt bec operating system, echo and alex voice operating system. I t amazon that has some of the operating system. Thats maybe where amazon maybe does get the attention of government oversight or whatnot is when it is full staff. I Say Something to echo and it goes and delivered and then it is a third party thats part of amazons infrastructure environment. Theyre in control for all of that. In control but also provides an incredible ease to the customers which we all love. I think we have to think carefully about the trade offs, what type of ease used integration verses the challenges and the control that we see when we allow for these integrated experience. Piece of team. It is a small team, it owns a core capability or a service so it could be Something Like the service or the Payment Service of amazon. They own it for a long period of time. That obsession on a product making it world class and innovating it and delivering every single day reads a different types of results than a project team that launches something and leaves. It is the product ownership and cross functional nature of a small team thats what helps keep the entrepreneur capabilities going. John crossman, thank you for being with us this morning. Thank you, scott. Press here will be back in just a moment. Welcome back to press here, we were just talking about amazon. When you watch the video from inside amazons fulfillme u pro those robots. There are so many robots now. The workplace in the future will have just one human and one dog. The human is there to feed the dog. The dog is there to feed the human from interfering with the robots. Dogs are not more and more tasks and blue collar and highly skills will be automated. There is a danger of over hyping. We in the media guilty of over hyping 3d printing. Robots not going to replace every job. This is no robo cop for sure. Our serial entrepreneur, ceo of exponential works. Thank you for being with us this morning. Good to be here. You did a ted talk in 2014 about the same time we three were hyping up 3d printing. We trek, did you over hyped it cot you said in. I feel goo wimeline and i was under estimatiing some of the progress for example in 3d printing in medical device. The reality is all of these technologies and well talk about it in a minute, getting to the deceptive state and in the same way that we could not predict the abduction of devices. Once we got going and once it came out of it, deceptive, we miss the predictions every year. Something is happening with 3 3d printing. I am going to come to your defense. So 260 million in funding. 4 billion and the amount money thats being put into 3d printing, is that a record . Almost 700 million, it does take four or five states of 3d printing company. It is still a tale of two cities in the sense where you have the Real Companies with real revenues and my former companies are struggling. People predict this is going to happen in the future and you said theyre up by several years . Bitcoin and five years too early before that. It does happen. I think it was 50 years too early in bitcoin. I generally agree with this. The one thing i wonder is you get to a certain point, well, which part of this technology is working . Me methals are working. You can see the analog to bo thats where you see demo in the lab where used. And automotive are taking off the table, lightweight materials. What are they going to do next . Theyll have to use design and taking more mass out of product. How long have we had ai . Primarily five decades . We finally have the Computing Power right in the cloud and a lot of data and all of a sudden this algorithm forever a forever are monetizable and destructi destructive. Maybe now is the age of 3d printing. Lets talk about futures of jobs and ai and robotics and whatnot. We see articles or write articles of the future of peoples jobs and i know some people worry tremendously about it. What is our take on it and our reendangering them over hyping the robots . I am worried about it and excited at the same time. I am worried about it because i think we are tripping all over ourselves to absolutely every repetitive casting we can think of. They do extremely well. Ai does it extremely well. And all of it is going to get destructed. The challenge that we have is the timing. I am more into disruption happening in mass ahead of creating bun denabundance of ot sites. Are we going to have in our lifetime or cooperating are robotics all over the place and creating more jobs . Yes. The moment that Long Distance gets disrupted, it is the end of car ownership as we know it. Let me go ahead and squeeze that one in. My question is simply going to be when you got this manufacturing, you think about how automation and what is changing that . What we see is humans and machine working, automating this and that, the real opportunity there is to alter the entire process, the whole cell of a person working. It is happening on you look at Companies Like robotics that cant make enough of this system because they are inexpensive and they show up to work everyday and theyre reliable. You can give them more and more tasks because they are selftaught. I am worried of the timing of d of abundance and what happens to jobs. Here in silicon valley, we always think of how we can be apart of the solution. I am on a timer and it is counting down. Thank you, avi, for being with us this morning. Thank you. Press here will be back. A reminder, we have launched a new broadcast called sand hill road.
