One of the biggest mysteries in the ghost ship warehouse fire will remain a mystery. Today a fire federal investigator admitted to the jury her team could not determine how the deadly fire started. 36 people died and the two landlords are now on trial. Melissa colorado joins us this evening in oakland. Reporter we dont know what sparked the fire but we know what healed the fire. The investigator told the jury there was so much stuff inside the building, things like furniture, pianos, organs, tapestries, and it all allowed the fire to spread so quickly. Today we heard from atf special agent Barbara Maxwell who said the fire started in the back wall of the warehouse near a trailer and kitchen area that had several electrical appliances. She could not say for sure if an electrical problem started the fire but ruled out someone throwing in a molotov cocktail to spark it. Defense attorneys contend arsonists started the fire and there was no way either man could have prevented it. With the states case winding down, next up is the defense team for max harris who will eventually tell the jury his side of the story. Id like to get him on the stand as soon as possible. He certainly wants to be heard. To actually hear from max harris will be very emotional to people who filled out the home space. The judge even commented early in the trial the case is moving quickly. Looking ahead what do we know about the strategy from the defense team . Reporter well, a question of how well the defense team can prove this arson theory. The defense attorney for max harris says hell call on several witnesses who were there at the warehouse on the night of the fire. These witnesses are going to say they saw a Suspicious Group of men near the warehouse and that the witnesses heard the sound of glass breaking, suggesting a molotov cocktail was thrown at the warehouse. So the jury is really going to have to decide whether or not these witnesses are credible. One thing is for certain. If you dont have the cause of the fire, you cant 100 rule out arson. Guys . Okay. Melissa colorado reporting live for us in oakland. Thank you, melissa. New at 6 00 tonight a woman says someone assaulted her at the bottle rock festival last week. She says it happened while she was using the restroom. Police arrested peterson fonte sunday, accused of touching the woman inappropriately while she was in a portapotty. They wanted to raise money to build granny units in east palo alto. Facebook liked the idea and agreed to kick in about 335,000 bucks to get it started. A menlo park nonprofit called soup kicked in another 775,000. Soon four granny units will be built to house four families. Always try to stay involved. Construction will begin shortly. Four families will then have a place to live along with access to low Income Housing loans. New at 6 00 tonight San Jose Police officers have them but soon so will some Parking Enforcement officers. Were talking about license plate readers and the new push to have parking control officers help find stolen cars. Well take a closer look at the plan and whether its a good one. Reporter the idea is while Parking Enforcement officers are out checking for expired meters theyll be using technology to help find your stolen car. Someone stole it from the front of my house. Reporter this man from san jose had his honda civic stolen and got it back a month later completely stripped. Saturday this city councilman wants to change that. He is proposing san jose Parking Enforcement officers get automatic license plate readers that will signal immediately if a car is stolen. Its just a way to make things more efficient, get the cars back sooner, and maybe, which is a big maybe, but i hope it will deter people from stealing cars from san jose. Reporter he says the license state readers would also allow Police Officers more time to respond to other crimes. The devices cost nearly 300,000 and are already used by sjpd. There are still some concerns. Compliance officers are not peace or Police Officers. They dont need license plate readers. It is not their job to run down a stolen vehicle. Reporter the American Civil Liberties union is also concerned about privacy. He says that wont be an issue. We will not be holding on to peoples information unless their car is stolen. Reporter he says since Parking Enforcement officers come in contact with so many cars every day it just makes sense to let them play a role in getting stolen cars back to their owners. Marcus agrees. I think it would be a good idea if the parking people did have those readers. They probably would find a lot more stolen cars. Reporter well find out on friday whether the proposal gets the green light when the mayor releases his budget plan. In san jose, marianne favro. Su. And tonight its the bay area premiere. Antioch says it needs time to draft a resolution before voting on whether to give the rainbow flag the green light. Last night the council got an earful from both sides of the debate. Many say it is a sign of inclusiveness, the flag, while others argue it goes against their christian beliefs. Christians believe marriage was set between a man and a woman and thats what we believe is through that we were all created in his image. I see it as a symbol of hope and diversity and inclusiveness and it has been raised around the world to mean that. Tonight the red carpet is out for the movie getting a lot of buzz. The last black man in San Francisco took ten years to make and it just won two awards at the sun dance Film Festival including best director. Actor danny glover and mike epps are part of this cast. Joe talbot born and raised in San Francisco makes his directorial debut in this story about a changing city inspired by the true story of his best friend, jimmy. I dropped out of high school and im making movies with my best friend who is not a big, bankable actor. Were just, you know, kids from San Francisco trying to make movies. Always come back to the old house. Basically in the movie im trying to get a house that was my family house back. When you lose your home, identification, whatever it is, the home represents something for everyone, you know . And Something Different but usually something very significant or important. We felt it needed to be explored and i feel like that is something that has resonated with people especially in the bay area especially in a city that ive been pushed out. This friendship that i fear might not get to exist in the future of San Francisco. Two kids from different backgrounds came together, became very close friends, and then made art together. Like thats, i think, to me an important part of the city. Sometimes i feel like the city does love me back as much as i love it sometimes but there are still pockets there and i still appreciate the San Francisco that i got to grow up in. Clearly, im not the last black man, you know, obviously, but its what, 3 black or something right now. Its like super, super low. The park used to be full of black people, boom boxes out, and dice games and now its just like a dog park and just a lot of people there are no colored people there. There are a lot of people connecting to jimmies story that have different experiences. This film began as an idea between two friends but now feels like it was made by an entire city of people. You two stick together. Danny glover called jimmie. He called my personal cell phone, randomly. Im coming back from the gym or something and hes like, he called my cell phone, hey man. This is danny. Im like i know the voice. Yeah. I know Danny Glovers voice. Yes. Working with danny glover, i mean, it was easier than i expected because he was so humble and easy going. It is so personal for me that i dont feel like some star when im filming it. It feels so real for me. It was such a therapeutic experience. Twa is like i got through a lot of demons that i didnt, you know, i grew as a person in doing this movie. You want to fight for what you love. But you want to acknowledge the fact that sometimes, yeah. Maybe it might be time to look at moving on to a different stage of your life. Im not leaving. Im the last one left. Very timely movie with whats happening in San Francisco right now. The last black man in San Francisco opens in select theaters on friday, june 7th. There is a little shower activity happening right now. We expect this to stay over the higher elevations. Dry tonight here through the bay area but off to the north you can see this round of wet weather. Its also beginning to fall apart. We could still see some spotty showers down to clear lake as we head through the next 30 minutes or so. Its really going to get going good here with this thunderstorm approaching right now in the 505 corridor. Into tomorrows forecast youll see we start out with the fog, some drizzle near the coast line. The best chance of thunderstorms for the afternoon would be right here near middle town, calistoga, we head into tomorrow afternoon you can see it right there.
