weeks ago. it includes a formal sit down with prime minister shinzo abe, and social outings. hallie jackson is traveling with the president. good morning to you, hallie. >> reporter: hey, sheinelle, good morning, and the president has only just landed in japan. already he's delivering a message with getting a more fair trade deal with the country. keep in mind, this trip is less about the policies and more about the personalities. a white house official was telling me today the president is really focussed on relationship building with the japanese leaders here, and even after that flight across the pacific, president trump cannot escape the stories back home that threaten to overshadow his trip here to tokyo. touching down near tokyo, president trump starting a state visit full texas. these, again, could develop later today, so it could be an after dark type situation. then tomorrow really that same area, the western plains down into the panhandle of oklahoma and texas. that's where we're looking at the threat of tornadoes once again, along with damaging winds. it's all because of this stalled front. it's slowly moving to the east and as it does so, the storms will fire up along it. the storms we're expecting in the northeast could occur again sunday afternoon into sunday evening as the front drapes to the east. we could see significant airport delays especially die. >> patterson largely looked down for much of the hearing, but shook his head at several points. he offered a brief, teary apology. >> i would do, like, absolutely anything to take back what i did, you know. i'm just so sorry. >> a swift legal ending to a shocking crime that will linger over this small town. for today, ron mott, nbc news, baron, wisconsin. missouri is now the latest state to pass new restrictions on the procedure with the state's governor signing a law to ban abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy. nbc's kathy park is here with more. >> good morning, missouri's governor says the bill sends a strong signal to protect women's health while advocating for the unborn. the aclu condemned his decision and is taking legal action. it's the latest in a series of court your own loved ones. legal analyst, danny cevallos is here. good morning. >> this is intimidating stucff. let's start with aretha franklin. they found three handwritten wills. one was stuffed in the sofa. >> this is a huge mess, like a law school exam. when someone dies, intested without a will, then whatever state they're in, those lies will apply to figure out where all the property goes. generally if you have only children it will be distributed equally among them. but michigan is one of the states that actually recognizes what we call holographic will, a handwritten will. some states don't at all. if you have a handwritten will and nobody witnessed it, then it's out. it doesn't even apply. michigan, it play apply. it still needs to meet the standards, it needs to be dated in the thandwriting, to have a shot at being legit, and to add to the complexity, there are three and you have to figure out which of those are legitimate and which was last in time. >> you say every adult should have a will. i don't. how do you even get started? >> thank you for your candor. i think that's important. up to 60% of people in america don't have wills. so you are not alone. one of the most important things you can do and something that we all seem to put off for some reason, it's very important to have a will, whether you are single, no children, living on a f futon in an apartment with no assets or you're aretha franklin, if you have few assets, you can look online, you can do some research or if you're married, if you have children, you should probably go see an attorney. and i think you'd be surprised that the rates are not as expensive as say some of the president's attorneys or something like that. >> so i was about to say we were going to take it a step at a time, you talked about the simplest scenario, if you don't have any children, can you walk in somewhere and get it done or what do you do if you don't have a lot of assets? >> if you don't have a lot of assets, you have legal zoom, rocket lawyer. you can search online and find a bunch of form wills if you're feeling dangerous enough, but i would recommend that, most states have very stringent requirements and maybe a number of witnesses. it's generally a good idea to look at your state's requirements if you want to go that way. again, talk to an attorney. you may be surprised. it's not that expensive and if you don't have a lot of assets then it may be a very simple will because everything is probably going to go just straight up to your parents. >> we were talking about this in the break before. it's not just the will but the naming of guardians f you're parents and have kids, where do you go if you and your partner pass away. this is a tough conversation to talk about. who gets our kids if we're not here to look after them. what is the advice you offer parents. >> it's a tough conversation. it's an equally if not more difficult if you're divorced because you have children and you have to decide what happens not only if you die but then if your ex-spouse predeceases you, what happens then. wills and trusts and estates is all about what if, and what if includes the most unlikely for. just like any family pet that is adopted from us or any other organization. >> the dog's former owner faces ten counts of felony animal cruelty. coming up this morning, on "today in the bay," a new idea in san francisco. no more right turns on red. we will tell you about the potential behind this ambition. when we come back with all of the top stories in a half hour. we are back on this saturday morning, may 25th, 2019, it is a gorgeous morning here in new york, and a great crowd out on the plaza this morning to celebrate the start of memorial day weekend. it is fleet week here in new york. we thank all of those service members for their service to this country. and still ahead, now that summer has unofficially arrived, it's time to go to the movies and from rocketman to a reboot of "men in black" to a live action "lion king", you have some great ones to choose from. i'll catch up with a former nba star the focus of a new documentary who highlights his struggles with mental health. my conversation with ron artez, coming up. and we have the top new york city chef grilling up some hot and spicy steak. right now he's handing out some treats to the crowd. they picked a good day to be here. that looks like some good stuff. let's begin with the indy 500, just one day away. for good reason, it's called the greatest spectacle in racing and for good reason. with the driver speeding around the track at more than 200 miles per hour. >> so we're going to talk about the race in just a moment with danica patrick who competed in the indy 500 eight times and retired after last year's race. first, a look at why the eyes of the racing world are on indianapolis this weekend. >> the indianapolis 500, the greatest spectacle in racing, the race that every driver dreams of winning. a race where legends are made, in front of 300,000 rowdy fans. in just over 24 hours, 33 brave drivers will maneuver around this track, hitting speeds up to 230 miles per hour, pushing their cars and bodies to the limit, making for big thrills and some close calls. last year's indy 500 champ will power always dreamed of winning at the track they call the brick yard. >> absolutely joy, happiness, just a great moment i'll never forget. >> he capped off his victory with a traditional bottle of milk and a kiss he'll never forget. tomorrow, power joins a collection of drivers from around the globe who all have sights set on one thing, the checkered flag at the 103rd running of the indianapolis 500. so the winner receives not only the trophy but also more than 2 1/2 million dollars. >> wow. that's nice too. >> it is. >> let's bring in danica patrick. she is an indy 500 veteran, and nearly won. she's now fortunately for us, an nbc sports analyst. . good to see you. >> thank you, how are you? >> an indy 500 means 200 laps around that track in speeds of excess of 200 miles an hour. what's it like being back in the brick yard and up in the booth this go around. >> i can tell you that it's a lot safer, i think. and it's a lot less stressful, but it's really fun. the biggest difference is that when it comes to doing the job where it's on track activity, that's the part where i got really nervous and now that's the part where i get really excited. >> you mentioned it's a lot safer. we have seen dangerous crashes, not just at practice but qualifying races. did you worry about your safety or frankly your life? >> honestly that's something i've talked about a lot lately is that now being removed from it, i recognize the danger. i recognize the stress. i recognize the challenge and how hard it is, but when you're in it, you're not thinking about those things. your scope is so small compared to that. because it doesn't help you to think about those things. it's not going to make you better to think, oh, it's so dangerous out here, so you need to stay focussed on the end game, which is to win the race and be successful. now i look back and i think i was crazy. >> what speed do you top out in that race? >> about 240. good draft down the back straight away. in qualifying they were getting up to almost 240. definitely 238, top speed, and of course there's no braking and there's no lifting so in qualifying, you know, you're going into the corner flat out turning left. you're making a hard left with your foot flat on the throttle going 240 miles per hour. >> i was hitting 70 on the freeway a couple of days ago. felt pretty good. for average race viewers, what should we be looking for tomorrow? >> this is the longest race of the season for indy cars. there's the most amount of pit stops, so what i would say is that you've got to watch the whole thing because anything can happen and that's the advice i got my very first year, you're never out of it. in my first year when i almost won, i stalled in the pits and there was an accident about 3/4 of the way through that ripped my front wing off. there i was almost winning the race in the first one. you have to watch to the end. anything can play out. your favorite driver still has a shot, and man, we have seen some crazy endings, you know, right at the line, inches apart, so it's definitely a long race and a lot can happen. >> it's so funny, i have interviewed athletes once they have stopped playing and watch a game. sometimes every once in a while they want to jump back in. is there anything in you that you would make you want to hop back in and race again? >> no, but i was driving my car to the track today to do this interview, and it was kind of early on a saturday morning of course and there's no nobody out there, so i started ripping it like a race car driver and i was like, you know what, i kind of miss some of this a little bit. i miss the pushing it to the edge sort of hitting your mark sort of thing, but look, i had 2 years of it, and i'm good. i can play around on a track. i shouldn't go on the road with it. >> fair enough. >> danica, it's so nice to have you on our team now at nbc sports. thank you so much. good to see you. >> thank you so much. don't forget to watch the indianapolis 500 right here on nbc, you can catch all the action. again, it's tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m. eastern. >> i would like to ride with her. that would be fun. only for fun. let's get a final check of the weather from dylan. she's made her way out to the plaza. >> hey, guys. so i got to know, i walked out here and you guys just go bananas. what are you so excited about? >> to be in new york. >> just to be in new york. >> where are you from. >> williamsburg, virginia. >> and who all are you with? >> it's your whole high school. >> it's a band trip! you guys are a band, too. that's awesome. so nice to have you here. >> thank you. >> and we're actually going to see some really nice weather in new york city for this memorial day weekend. the sun is shining right now. it's beautiful and temperatures will continue to warm up, although in the southeast, that's where we're going to see some of our hot temperatures. in fact, we're likely going to break records across the southeast but we have to watch cloudy and cool right now but today's forecast will be mostly dry. you don't have to worry about the rain for today. as you head out the door, keep in mind that temperatures will be in the upper 60s, low 70s, for the south bay, concord, 73. oakland, 67. san francisco, 64. also expect an increase in cloud cover into tonight, with breezy winds starting to pick up. as we continue to monitor an approaching system that is expected to have rain in the into a whole new world and out of robin william's famous lamp in the live adaptation of aladdin. olivia wild is offering up some memorial day counter programming with her director debut. it puts a hilarious spin on the high school coming of age story. and how did elton john go from a small town boy to one of the most iconic figures in pop culture, you'll find out when "rocketman" launches into theaters this month. >> people pay to see elton john. >> summer has long been synonymous with special effects and sequels and this one will see the return of plenty, just ask godzilla, king of the monsters. you want superheroes? no problem. you've got spiderman far from home, and dark phoenix to look forward to. meanwhile, the men in black are back. >> the men and women in black. >> but this time it's chris hemsworth and tessa thompson taking the lead. speaking of spinoffs, we've got the first from the fast and furious franchise. hobs and shaw. on the family friendly front, the animation situation delivers harrison ford and secret life of pets 2. tom hanks in toy story 4. >> we need to get back to our kid. >> and just about every celebrity in the lion king reimagined in live action form. in a summer ripe with remake sequels and spinoffs, there's plenty of original gems too, like the star studded zombie sapphire, the dead don't die. >> i'm thinking zombies. >> paul mccartney, the beatles. >> yesterday imagines a world that doesn't know the beatles except for one aspiring singer and the race for oscar gold has already begun as the manson murders get the tarantino treatment in "once upon a time in hollywood" and fast and furious if you planned a party with animals with a rock star. >> we should also mention the secret life of pets, all from our sister company universal pictures. i sat down with former nba star metta may is mental health awareness month and the nba finals are set to start next week. while those two events don't seem to be connected they are in the next story. >> seems like the perfect time to premier a documentary about a former nba star, metta world peace, previously known as ron artest. >> the former champion ended his career as one of the sport's most controversial figures. we talked about life growing up on the tough streets of queens, his struggle with mental health and being at the center of an infamous brawl with fans that changed his life. >> i was here for i guess ten years maybe. >> it's been 20 years since he left the old neighborhood but now retired from the game he loved, nba legend metta world peace is back in the new york city housing projects that he called home. he grew up in the infamous queens bridge housing projects known for crime and violence in the 1980s. it shaped him into the controversial nba all star that other basketball players and fans loved to hate. >> this was your spot. >> this was my spot. >> every day. >> every day. >> we played 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. >> 2, 3:00 a.m. >> yeah, yeah, we working all day, all day because there was nothing else to do. >> did people say go home? >> i was trying to be respectful for the people that were sleeping so i would try to make them go swish, every time i hit the back board, this bad boy made the lot of noise, and the lady on the second floor would open the window when i hit the back board. got to get my shot better, eventually, straight in. >> making baskets was one of many skills he picked up as a child. fighting was another. >> i got suspended. >> for fighting? >> yeah. >> i spent every year i was in high school, every single year. >> as a child he struggled with anger management and mental health issues that caused many to label him as crazy. >> we're talking about mental health awareness, a lot of people can relate to the fact, sometimes they have a kid who's as sweet as pie, calm, and the next moment they snap. they're angry. >> absolutely. >> was that you? >> i snapped a lot. i didn't go out of my house upset but anything could have tipped me off, if i wanted to get in a fight or something. >> when artest left to join the chicago bulls, the fighting, suspensions and inability to control his explosive temper followed him into the nba. that bad boy reputation was cemented in november of 2004 at the palace of auburn hills in michigan. artest got into a shoving match with an opposing player. he later raced into the stands to retaliate against a detroit pistons fan after he was hit by a cup thrown at him. it was called malice at the palace is and is considered one of the darkest days in nba history. >> take me back to malice at the palace, you're on the table, thinking happy thought, trying to be calm. it clearly didn't work. >> it did work, but then somebody threw something at me. >> with the help of a psychologist, artest received treatments for his mental illness and as a laker made the biggest shot in game seven of the 2010 championships. >> take me to the moment when you thanked your therapist on national tv when you won the national championship. >> i want to thank my doctor, my psychiatrist. >> was that a huge moment? tell me how big that moment. i know it was a huge moment. >> i just wanted to give thanks to someone. i wasn't trying to reach the masses. i just wanted to give credit where credit was due. >> now the nba, you know, they talk about mental health, you know, the resources are there. do you think you're part of the reason why? >> i got to say i'm one of the reasons. i think the people that are called off, i think they are beautiful in inside, i think they are special. i think they are assets to us. >> he is a fascinating and the kindest guy and still committed to mental health awareness, almost ten years after auctioning off, his auctioned off his nba championship ring and donated all the proceeds to this cause. a couple of things i'll tell you before we go. another piece to this story is he called up years later, he called up that fan who threw that cup and now they're friends. it's a testament to his character. the fan couldn't believe he called and reached out to him, and i talk about the fact he's so kind. i deal with a lot of celebrities and if we go back to their neighborhoods, they're in and out, ron metta, he stayed, he lingered. people were coming out of the projects. he knows their names and grandparents. he's such a guy, and he lingered. i have never seen anybody linger and not rush to get out, do you know what i mean so it's something i will always keep with me, and it's the kind of way i want to be, i guess. just always kind. you can tell i'm like mother-in-lemotional about it because he was a good guy. the ron artest story premiers may 31st. how tnow that i've got you here for a minute, or two actually, i've got to
