declared a state of emergency. at least two people were killed here. a mother and son who died when a tree fell on their home. a powerful ef-3 tornado was packing winds of 136 miles an hour. it tore the roof off this coffee shop. this morning, the cleanup is underway after storms st. louised st. louliced through th south. >> we're still assessing damage in multiple parishes. >> reporter: the governor on a tour confirmed it was a powerful ef-3 tornado that spun through the town. >> some of the worst devastation we have seen to be concentrated. >> reporter: on the ground, homes demolishes, power lines snapped. kendra and her 14-year-old son were killed when a tree fell on their home. louisiana tech -- >> we have a lot of damage, a lot of debris across our campus. >> reporter: despite the damage, the students are all safe. >> a lot of our residential facilities are damaged with windows and glass blown out and things like that. athletic facilities are essentially unusable. >> reporter: one of the students, an nfl prospect, spent draft day helping the community. >> people lost their lives. a lot of people lost their property. they will never be back. just doing what i can. >> repore the roof on this motel. guests managed to escape. all this as the devastating storms cut a path of destruction through parts of texas. near austin, a group of good samaritans using their muscle to turn over a flipped vehicle. >> oh, my god. >> the driver somehow survived without a scratch. the mayor knows how lucky he is. he and his wife were sleeping when a tree crashed through their ceiling. >> the tree was in the house. it was raining pretty good. the water was coming in the house. >> reporter: across the south, at least five people were killed. here in louisiana, the national weather service has confirmed at least eight tornadoes, most of them carving a path of destruction that stretched about 150 miles. >> really scary stuff. gabe, thank you very much. >> that severe weather is on the move this morning, blanketing the east coast. dylan is in for al. she's tracking it for us. what are we looking at? >> we are going to see a rainy day up and down the east coast, down into northern florida. extending into the great lakes. we have pockets of heavier rain this morning. then we will get breaks and then more rain and even some severe thunderstorms filling in later this afternoon. this area across southern new jersey, pennsylvania, maryland, delaware, virginia and north carolina, this is the zone we will watch this afternoon for more storms to fire up. damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour. also, spin in the atmosphere could help to spin up a couple of tornadoes. that is something we certainly have to keep an eye on later this afternoon. we are expecting significant delays at the airports just because the flights will be dodging the heavier downpours and thunderstorms. charlotte and raleigh expecting delays. also washington and baltimore, philly and into pittsburgh because of the heavier downpours and the potential for severe weather. as for flooding, because these downpours could produce a lot of rain in a short period of time, we could see some isolated flash flooding or some ponding on the roads if you are driving today. keep that in mind. most of our higher rainfall totals will be across new england where we could see about one to perhaps the most battle ready to take on the president. >> thank you. now to new fears over the measles. hundreds of students at two california universities under quarantine as officials try to contain the latest outbreak. more on that. >> reporter: good morning. here at ucla, that student infeki infected attended a lecture hall behind me and three other classrooms on this campus. over at cal state los angeles, that student was at a library and may have exposed hundreds of people. health officials tell us, they're not taking any chances. in an effort to stop a measles outbreak from spreading, health officials ordered the quarantine of 325 people at two high profile universities in california. at cal state, nearly 200 employees and students may have been exposed to a student with the measles at the school's busy library. everyone ordered to stay home. here at ucla, another contagious student attended classes. initially, 127 students and faculty were quarantined in one of the buildings on campus. officials won't say where. that number is dropping. the health department confirms if those being held can provide proof of immunity, they are free to go. the u.s. is currently in the midst of the largest measles outbreak since the disease was declared eliminated nearly two decades ago. the cdc says so far this year, 695 cases have been reported across 22 states. if you are wondering if you and your children are safe, the cdc says try to find your immunization records. if you do not have written documentation of measles immunity, you should immediately get vaccinated. they say there's also no harm in getting another dose if you have already had it. here at ucla, classes are continuing as scheduled. the health department says there's no cause for major concern here. as for the students being quarantined, the majority of tho them will stay in quarantine for another 24 to 48 hours. some students may be affected for up to a week. back to you in new york. >> thanks. we move to a frightening crash near denver. it claims the li people, caused a massive inferno. we see video of the speeding semi now being blamed for it. >> reporter: good morning. investigators combing the crash site for victims as well as clues. more than a dozen cars and three semis were involved in this horrific accident. overnight, investigators on the scene of a terrible crash and fire on a busy denver highway. >> someone hit me on the right side of my truck. i look over. i see a car on fire. i hear the explosion on it. >> reporter: the accident happened during thursday evening's rush hour. a number of people have been killed. they are not able to confirm how many victims died because some of the cars involved were so badly damaged. >> oh, my god! >> this shocking video capturing the moments right before the crash. it appears to show a tractor-trailer barrelling down the shoulder of the road. >> [ bleep ]. we [ bleep ] almost died. >> reporter: there was an earlier accident. the semi may have been trying to get around it. >> the semi was eastbound and ended up colliding with the stopped cars that were stopped because of the accident up ahead of it. >> reporter: one of the trucks was carrying lumber. adding fuel to the fire that ignited. the flames quickly engulfing more than a dozen cars and three trucks. thick black smoke visible for miles. >> the smoke was so bad, they were getting out of their car and returning. >> reporter: at least six people were hospitalized, including the driver of the semi. >> six cars are scorched, vehicles flipped over. everything under here is scorched from the flames from the truck. i don't know when they're going to open this back up again. it's going to be a long time. >> reporter: authorities say the bridge where the accident occurred was badly damaged. not from the impact of the collision, but from the intense heat from the flames. police say the driver of the truck may have caused this crash and is now in the hospital. the extent of his injuries is not clear. authorities will want to talk to him as soon as possible to get answers to figure out what happened. >> the investigation so important. thank you >> louisiana's governor has declared a state of emergency here. as you can see there's extensive damage. the tornado picked up vehicles and tossed them in the parking lots and tore the roof off of this coffee shop. the national weather service has confirmed an ef-3 tornado packing winds of 136 miles an hour and as you mentioned, savannah, this was part of a storm system that spawned tornados in texas and louisiana. here in ruston, two people were killed, a mother and son died when a tree fell on to their home. it isst eight tornados here in louisiana, most of them carving a path of destruction that stretched about 150 miles. savannah. >> all right. really starting to see it as the sun is coming up. thank you. the measles outbreak has more than 200 students and staff at two big college campuses in la los angeles under quarantine. they must stay home. the order comes as the number of measles cases nationwide hit a 25-year high. at least 694 cases in 22 states since january. we turn to a bizarre story out of baltimore. the city's mayor is embroiled in a scandal over her own self-published children's book series. >> now she is facing calls to resign from that state's governor. nbc's jegeoff bennett has made s way to baltimore. good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. it's the latest development in the months-long scandal surrounding baltimore's city mayor catherine pugh. federal investigators are focused on whether she used sales of her children's book to disguise illegal kickbacks. the investigation is growing and so are the calls for pugh to step down. in baltimore this morning city mayor catherine pugh now facing a growing scandal just after 7:00 a.m. thursday fbi and irs agents raided pugh's city hall office and two of her homes. seizing documents. the fbi not confirming the nature of the searches, but the governor tweeting that mayor pugh has been under investigation by maryland state prosecutors into whether she illegally profited from her self-published children's book series called healthy holly. >> the concept was to teach the children how to live. >> reporter: in march the embattled amar'e apologized for a book deal she negotiated with the university of maryland medical system. that deal reportedly earning her over half a million dollars since 2011. $100,000 of which she recently returned. pugh once sat on the organization's board of directors. >> in hindsight, this arrangement with the university of maryland medical system was a regrettable mistake. >> reporter: reportedly she received more than $100,000 for her book from health care giant kaiser permanente while it was seeking multimillion-dollar contracts with the city. maryland's republican govern larry hogan now calling for the democratic mayor to step down, writing in a statement, mayor pugh has lost the public trust. she is clearly not fit to lead. for the good of the city, mayor pugh must resign. the entire city council also urging her to quit. >> this has gone on far too long. it is entirely unfair to the citizens of baltimore. >> reporter: now, pugh has been battling pneumonia. she has been out of public view since early last month. her attorney told reporters yesterday that pugh is still in poor health. he says she is not lucid enough to figure out whether she should resign. >> all right. geoff bennett in baltimore. thank you. time for the "morning boost." a young girl took the stage at her school in new jersey. she is about to get an award. the real reward was standing behind her, hidden by the curtain. i don't know. are we going to show it? >> for years and years we raised a lot of money for research to treat the symptoms. now research has a chance of slowing the progression or stopping the disease. it takes a lot of money and a little more time, but we are finally at that stage. >> you know a lot about slowing the progression. your father lived with parkinson's for 30 years. tell people at home one thing about parkinson's they don't know about it? >> parkinson's has many different phases to it. if the family and the person with parkinson's is very knowledgeable about it, it can really increase their quality of life. a lot of people don't know that. >> this unity walk tomorrow, why is it so special and fun for you? it's not just a fundraiser? >> yeah. you know what? people are out there getting camaraderie, solidarity with each other. my father didn't have anything like this when he had pd. he thought he was the only one. so much information to get. if you understand the disease, your life can be great. my father was exercising. he lived with it over 30 years. that's because he was really involved and had a great understanding about what he was going through. >> what's your favorite part about the event? >> after people get all that knowledge and know the importance of seeing a movement disorder specialist and then they call us and tell us how their life has changed, makes all the difference in the world. >> that's special. congratulations on 25 years. dylan, how is the weather looking for the walk? (vo) that's using your frigidaire. we are back with oscar winner viola davis and her sisters diana and dolores. they are here to talk about something really personal to them. according to the cdc 30 million people in the u.s. have diabetes, one in four don't even know they have it. viola has been working as a paid spokesperson for merck on a documentary funded by the pharmaceutical company called a touch of sugar. it focuses on diabetes hks. she shares her story for the first time. >> the disease has taken a toll on my family. my great aunt bessie passed away from complications of diabetes. and my sisters dolores and dianne are struggling with it in different ways. a few years ago i was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. >> viola, dianne, dolores are here. this is the first time you are revealing this, that you have been diagnosed with prediabetes. >> yes. >> before we get into it, what made you feel like this was the time to come forward? what are you hoping that you will accomplish? >> well, what i'm hoping to accomplish is exactly what merck is hoping to accomplish, is to arm people with information to help them manage a diabetes diagnosis pause a lot of times when you are given the diagnosis, there is nothing. you just sort of succumb to it, you know. when i was young, everyone just said you had the sugar. you got the sugar, you know? and then you sort of waited to possibly get an amputation, to possibly have the disease spiral out of control, and they are saying you don't have to do that anymore. >> what does that mean for you? you found out when that you were pre-diabetic? >> a year and a half ago or so. i didn't know what that was. it was a high a 1 c, a test, a comprehensive test, to measure your glucose levels from the past two, three months. >> does that mean you will one day have diabetes? >> doesn't mean that you will, but it means you can. but if you manage it, and that's why i'm sitting here with my sisters, who both have type 2 diabetes. >> you got it at different times in your liechlt how did you take the news? when you found out and how have you been managing it? >> so when i was diagnosed with diabetes type ii i didn't think anything of it. i thought i could overcome this. so i didn't worry about it until it really did something, it really did something to me. >> it impacted you? >> yes. very badly. >> a health scare? >> yes, it was. >> how about you? how did you experience it? >> when i was first diagnosed i got the call at work. i was going in for surgery the next day. and my doctor said, you can't have the surgery because you're diabetic. i was shocked. absolutely shocked. but now i've learned how to really educate myself and become an advocate. >> and that's what the documentary, of course, is all about. i thought it was interesting. it profiles four individuals, one named stewart. he said he called the disease a family curse. he said i didn't choose to get diabetes. it addresses that there is a stigma sometimes that needs to be overcome? >> it's a stigma that you have allowed it to get out of control. it's because of what you eat. it's because of any number of reasons. but when you look at the numbers, you see that it's absolutely more complicated than that. here is the thing. at the end of the day, once you have the diagnosis, the most important thing, my favorite word lately is support. beyond help, support. supporting people who have already had the diagnosis, instead of stigmatizing them. >> hopefully, this film will be helping to hang that. before i let you go, viola, my hats off to you, my friend. you went skydiving in highwawai. i don't know what your sisters think about this. how came over you? how was it? >> i was crazy. i don't know what it was. oh, my god. >> it's incredible. we will have to [ bleepbleep ou of this. >> i did c uss. i will sttell you, that moment u put your legs outside of the plane and your guy that you are going tandem with says, okay, it's time, and you dip, i'm telling you are flying. it is absolutely the release of fear, the release of anxiety, everything. i'm so happy i did it. >> takes a lot of guts. would you do it again? >> absolutely, it's seasonal. >> what is now? >> it's getting really warm in las vegas, and everywhere, except for new york city. >> true. >> so what i'm doing is a very simple poutinesca. it's olive, capers, and anchovies. my daughter is not a big anchovy fan. >> none of us are. >> do you like them? >> no, i do not. >> my dad, you know my dad who is a caruso italian, you take anchovies with the thing and open them up. it would gross us out. >> when i was a kid my snack was toasted bread, butter, anchovies on the top. it's salty. briny. efficiency salty, you know what i mean? we are swapping out fresh salmon. >> very simple here. >> so i cubed this. you take a piece of salmon. it's less expensive this way. you take a piece of salmon and cube it up. >> wild or? >> at this point, they are pretty much the same. >> oh, no? >> well, because our oceans are so polluted that it's like you could do either. >> easier to cut the fish after it's cooked or when it's raw. >> much easier to cut when it's raw. do you want to start? salt. that's it. this a very hot pan. go for it. >> skin side? there is no skin? >> there is no skin. so the other thing my daughter doesn't like the skin. >> most people do. >> i want what jane likes. but a lot of people are very -- >> are tater tots coming later? >> tater lotots is another segment. anyway, brown it in here. then we add some red onion, a little bit. half of a red onion. it's slightly sweeter. and a little bit of garlic. if you don't want a ton of garlic, leave it whole. peel it and give it whole. when you chop it, you get a more intense garlic flavor. don't worry about the fish. it's going to fall apart. that's the point. >> she wants to cook it on all four sides. >> the idea was that you brown it a little bit. i thought this pan was a little hotter, but it's not. it's okay. so, anyway, you put that in there. this is a very quick week night meal. then you add a little bit of white wine. check and see. you guys all enjoy. the white wine sort of judeglaz the pan of the bits. >> this is a one-pot deal? >> it is. >> throw it in and let it -- >> yeah. cherry tomatoes halved. this is a fresh total sauce. >> and then what do we have here? >> sliced almonds. i mean olives. >> green olives. >> early i guess. >> oregano? >> thyme. >> and parsley? >> yes. all the olives. black and green. traditionally, it has olives in it. i cut out the capers and anchovies. >> why did you cut the capers out? >> my daughter picks them out. >> wow. >> i don't like capers. jane and i -- >> i know. eventually, jane is going to like capers. i promise. she loves olives. i double the olives so you have that salty, briny flavor. that cooks tore eigfor eight mi. this is what it looks like when it's done. >> what pasta? >> capanella. they look like little bells. >> you cook yours perfect, al dente? >> i like it al dente. i like to finish it in the pan. >> how does jade like it? >> al dente. savannah does not. it's the one thing you don't agree on. >> i like it mushy. >> delicious. we have to go. >> i thought we had tons of time. olive oil. sliced -- >> on the melons? >> yes, we are going to grill the melon. so you grill the melons just like this. >> is this a salad? >> this is a salad. we are making poached asparagus with melon salad. grill the melonen a couple minutes each side. add cherry tomatoes, add mint, add lemon juice, a little bit of salt and green chile. >> light and fluffy. >> okay. there is the melon salad. >> take the anchovies? >> savannah? >> yeah? >> do you like asparagus? >> i do. >> poach them in a little bit of water and butter for five minutes. they get nice and tender. >> you cover them? i can't get -- >> yeah, you cover them. it's butter and water. >> mine are always brown and floppy. >> water and butter. leave them in for five minutes, like poaching anything. take them out. top them with the melon and tomato salad. >> try it tonight. >> yeah. >> do you ever cut these?
