He says the cathedrals loss to in paris is a blow to the world. It represents the emotional, the physical, and the artistic endeavor of a culture. Shay says he first visited in 1989. He was the architect for city of charleston, south carolina, which was struggling to rebuild from hurricane hugo. He went to france to meet with their craftsmen. Says the county sanctuary policy kept from being deported years ago. I take very seriously my plan date, which is to make san jose safer. The mayor says the murder is one too many in his city and will meet with the local community again to answer questions. The only sensible response is simply to work harder, do more, and be smarter about how we can make san jose safer. I was very shocked to see it quite frankly because he is not the individual whos ire they should be on. Reporter today the police chief also came to the mayors defense and reitera h stance on the immigration issue. We are in full support of our immigrants coming into san jose. What were not in support of is the shielding of convicted felons who cause harm to our community, regardless of immigration status. Reporter the chief said no other mayor in this nation has supported his police chief more than liccardo has on the immigration issue. Still unclear who actually put this banner up. Reporter szabo is director of communications for the District Attorneys Office, so he made sure he took pictures of the swastikas. He points out the incident comes as his office sees a spike in hate crimes and says a swastika targets many people. Its not just jews. Its children. Its gay people. And now the Fire Department will go to the county supervisors and ask them for more than a Million Dollars to help fund staffing for that Wildland Fire Program to help put up those surveillance cameras we talked about, and also buy more vehicles. Reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, Marianne Favro, nbc bay area news. Okay, marianne, thank you so much. It looks dry where she circumstances yes. We had some showers pass through earlier, but, you know, some of that rainfall has been good to obviously keep that fire danger down. Not only today, but for the past couple of months. That has been some excellent news. And its actually been good enough to get us out of the drought, which is fantastic. But conversely, when you look a. So no doubt as we head through the next couple of months, fire season is going to be heightened, as it always is here in the bay area with all these heavily wooded areas, and of course you can count on us to track anything that breaks, you know, if it does. Okay. Lets go ahead and bring you down into storm ranger mobile doppler radar. The fire danger is low tonight due to the rainfall thats moving in. You can see its more scattered in nature from the north bay to the south bay. Weve seen the bulk of the system passing on through. This is really what well be left with are the hit and miss areas of rainfall. For san leandro you can see the wet weather moving off into hayward and more continual showers over the peninsula, moving off to the south a little bit and to the east into redwood city through 6 56 tonight. As we move into this evening, its just going to be very spotty. Well keep the cloud cover maybe a few heavier pockets developing there at 11 00 this evening. By tomorrow morning, we dry out. Our business and tech reporter scott budman joins us live from san jose. Hes got the numbers and the everyday costs behind those numbers, scott . Reporter yeah, its a good point, janelle and terry. We talk a lot about high housing price, but its also the things we buy every day like the high price of gas that really start to add up. Its one of the reasons why what passes for wealth in other bay area we consider enough to get by. We already know how expensive it is to buy or rent houses, even with more building being done prices are still high. And as if thats not enough you cant live comfortably in this market given the fact that everything is so expensive. Reporter a new study from Charles Schwab showing while 115,000 in annual income puts you in the well off category for most of the nation, youll need to make more than 300,000 a year to earn that title here in the bay area. If you want to be considered wealthy, the National Average is 2. 4 million in total holdings. Here in the bay area youll need thaillion. Doesnt really surprise me. There no i a yeah, it does cost to live here. When you consider the day to day cost of food, gas and housing, we are faced with a higher cost of living than almost anywhere else in the country. I dont think ill be a homeowner within the next ten years. We all have Student Loans to pay off as well. Making it tougher to reach the next rung of financial comfort. Its literally just impossible and extremely depressing, and thats why a lot of californians are leaving california. I think you just cant compete in this market. And she has a point. When well see a redacted version of the Mueller Report, and what we should expect from it. Our political analyst Larry Gerston joins us next. That s tm the french president after right now at 6 30, we will rebuild. Thats the message tonight from the french president after a massive fire damaged the famous notre dame cathedral. Youre looking live at that parisian landmark. Theyre still putting water on it. Its now 3 30 in the morning there. One of the worlds most visited landmarks is Still Standing tonight, but its taken a big hit. Crs saved notre da two landmark being destroyed, but the fire took out a landmark and much of the roof. Flames shot from the roof of the centuries old cathedral, and a smoke plume rose that could be seen for miles. The fire quickly engulfed the spire, which collapsed, and then the roof. The disastrous blaze also sent ash pouring on to tourists in the area. The mayor of paris said on twitter that paris firefighters tried to contain the fire. She urged paris citizens to stay away. French media quoted the paris fire brigade, saying it night be linked to a multimilliondollar renovation under way on the spire. Notre dame was built in the 12th century and attracts millions of tourists every year. The sight of the historic cathedral in flames hard for many to comprehend. French president Emmanuel Macron canceled an address to the nation and headed to his message on twitter, notre dame in flames. Im sad to see this part of us burn. A south bay couple is in paris right now. They cant believe what happened to that cathedral. They were just there on saturday night for palm sunday mass. The san jose couple sent us this selfie they took just two days ago. Theyre walking to their hotel this evening when the cathedral was going up in flames. My wife actually and i thought that it was a factory outside of paris because during the marathon, she passed some factory with smoke billowing out. Lilly crandell posted this on twitter. You can see the flames and the smoke coming up from the cathedral. Here is a look at the scaffolding just a few days ago. A lot of work was going on. 8 million of work. At the cathedral, judy sent us this photo. And former president obama sending us this picture with the caption notre dame is one of the worlds great treasures, and were thinking of the people of france in your time of grief. If you have a picture or video of notre dame, tag us on facebook, instagram, and twitter nbc bay area. Well, thursday is the day. Thats when the Mueller Report will be released. The justice Department Says attorney general william barr will release a redacted version of the full report. President trump immediately lashed out at democrats for long demanding the full report on twitter. Meanwhile, as millions of americans scramble to file their own tax returns today, democrats also mounted a renewed push to see president trumps returns. His tax forms today. Hes under audit. House democrats have given the irs a deadline of next week to turn over president trumps returns. The president s legal team is calling that request illegal. Now our political analyst Larry Gerston joins us wee been talki there are no new indictments. No criminal charges against president trump. Why is everybody still clamoring for this report . Its a good time for us to think about what happened. 22 months ago this started because 17 agencies determined that the russians had interfered with our election, and they wondered whether they had interfered in some way or cooperated with the trump campaign. These were serious questions. They required a lot of investigation, and the mueller team actually came in earlier than most of these special counsels do. People want to know details of whats in that report. Now any concerns about whats in there . Many concerns. So many people areed what kind of redactions will there be . We know there have to be redactions when it comes to methods and sources and innocent people that might have been caught by the investigation. But the question is how much more than that. Another question people have, what about this whole way that barr has interpreted muellers report with that fourpage memo he wrote. To what extent has that influenced the outcome as far as the public goes . To what extent has that incensed congress . Congress is waiting to see just whats out of that report because there so much to know about what things did such as what the russians did or didnt do. How close to obstruction of justice did the president come . Why didnt the mueller people go further . These are big questions. Are you looking for anything in particular . I want to know the tone of that report. I want to know just what the mueller team is really thinking, even if they dont say there was obstruction, will they say well, we got pretty close, but we didnt want to do it because we gave it to congress. Or there was not enough there. I want to understand exactly how thre they go , what kinds of evidence they relied one thing is for sure, janelle, the more thats redacted, the more suspicion will be there. Thats why its imperative that we understand what barr and his associates have decided to redact, why, and whether its really fair. Well see the tone of that report from mueller. And then barrs summary, if it was neutral, partisan. Yes. Well have a lot of answers on thursday. We hope. Larry gerston, thank you so much for your insight. Now our coverage of the Mueller Report continues on our website. Weve posted a timeline of the russia investigation. If you want to refresh your memory before that report comes out on thursday, thats at nbcbayarea. Com. They cant do anything until if and when the state passes the law, which could be until september. That means millions of families have begun the wait for a refund or maybe an audit. Should you worry . We invited chris chmura to share of his expertise in dealing with the irs. Good evening. We receive a steady stream of irs cases like william in oakland, alex in san jose and mike and kathleen, also in san jose. Audits are often on peoples minds and in their fears. But we tracked down some irss typically do not live up to the scary hype. First, your chances of being audit ready simply tiny, just 1 half of 1 of tax returns are audited or examines as the irs says. Most audits, 70 of them are done by mail. So no surprise knock at the door, summons to appear at the irs office. You settle it with letters. And here is the most encouraging part. It is possible that examination will result in a bigger refund. In 2017, for example, 34,000 audits ended with the irs writing a second check to the taxpayer. Not the other way around. So if you get a letter after you file, dont sweat it. If you run into trouble with the irs, tell us at nbcbayarea. Com responds, or call us, 888996tips. Thanks, chris. Keep it in mind next time youre out there, jeff. Tomorrow maybe . Tomorrow morning the sun will be back out . Yeah, yeah. Might be good for some iced coffee eventually. By thursday, right . Yeah, yeah. Its going to be warming up in that forecast as we head throughout this week. If youre like me, monday hit, the clouds rolled in, the rain is back. It was hard to get going, right, guys . Yes. Theyre nodding back there. Okay. I know all of you back at home are too. This is what were dealing with right now. The cloud cover across marin, napa, sonoma counties, all the way down to the south bay. Its our view from tiburon looking back towards the golden gate bridge. Its hard to see the golden gate bridge, but there is the spires right there. As we head through the night, well keep the chance of spotty rain and temperatures in the cool 50s. Youll need the jacket and umbrella for the next couple of hours. Lets bring in the storm ranger and you can see the coverage isnt that widespread. Were on the last leg of this, with some of this hit and miss activity. So lets track the top two locations. The rainfall over San Francisco, daly city. This will likely hold up into san leandro through 7 24 tonight. Also, this wet weather over stanford, palo alto, los altos, sunnyvale, moving off here into milpitas through 7 29 this evening. We still think the picture is going to look very similar through 9 00 tonight. Again, very hit and miss. Maybe a few heavier pockets here indicated by the yellow. But generally, its light to moderate. And again, very sporadic. As you move into tomorrow morning, well see this move on out. Also notice some of that sunshine for the north bay, east bay, also for the south bay. And a mix of some cloud cover as well. So overall, best chance of rain comes tonight. Totals a tenth of an inch. Maybe some spots could be a little bit higher here for the mountains, also the east bay. But not really expecting high totals as we head throughout this evening. Tomorrow mornings forecast starts the drying trend. So i think once we hit the commute for tomorrow morning, we get that sun coming back, its going to be cool outside. Well be just fine here as we hit our tuesday. 47 in the south grs. And the trivalley at 44. Also starting off with the cool 40s for the north bay, San Francisco and the east bay. Temperatures dont warm up a whole lot once we hit the afternoon tomorrow. You can see right here in San Francisco, were up to 59 degrees. But notice by thursday, 71 in San Francisco. Key reason why well see that change, warmer weather move in is a dryer wind moving out of the eastnortheast. So this is a gust of 10 to 20 miles per hour. Thats going to help to heat us up. Its the opposite of the cooling ocean breeze we normally have in San Francisco. So thats why the numbers go up to 71. But here is the thing. By friday, cooling ocean breeze comes back. A little bit of fog in the coastline. Numbers will drop down to 65 degrees and well hold with 60s as we head into the upcoming weekend. The temperature change is going to be a lot more dramatic for the inland valleys. Were at 65 tomorrow. Put you at 75 on wednesday. And that dryer windushes up to 83 on thursday.
