Two months, concrete came falling down into traffic on the Richmond San Rafael bridge. This is one of the chunks a motorist saw fall from the upper deck to the lower deck of the bridge 12 20 this afternoon. The driver called 911. As soon as we got the call, we immediately responded. Reporter luckily, nobody was hit or hurt. The chp closed the number two lane while cal trans inspected the situation. Traffic was backed up for two hours as cal trans took steps to make sure the bridge was safe. The inspector went up there and took a cherry picker style bucket list and knocked off the remaining loose pieces of concrete and basically ensured that theres no immediate hazard. Reporter back in february, the same thing took place. That time, football sized pieces of concrete hit a car. Nobody was hurt that time either. But drivers have told us theyre getting more and more nervous about crossing the bridge. Were back here live. Cal trans is working with the contractor to make sure this doesnt happen again. Repair work is scheduled to take place later tonight and meanwhile, representative mark levine from san rafael said his confidence in the Structural Integrity of the bridge let the bridge is falling. He is calling on lawmakers to immediately begin planning for construction of a new bridge. Reporting live in richmond, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Thank you, jodi. Stephen stock has been looking into our bridges for more than five years now. They say we dont want this to happen again but it happened again. Why . It could happen again, quite frankly, janelle. This bridge has been under repair for about three years because it was on the list of problematic bridges. The super metal stuff has been repaired but sol me of this old stuff, the concrete, the asphalt, the decking as they call it, thats still old and dates back to 1956 when this bridge was still open. Where does this rank on the list of problematic bridges . We did an investigation first in 2015 and saw of the 470 bridges that were problematic in the bay area, this one was right on the edge of that, so it was problematic then. They have fixed the super structure, so thats actually in better shape but we still have this road bed which some of it dates back more than 50 years. Thats why we see it crumble. Thats the old stuff. Thats right. Thats exactly right. You saw in some of the pictures, it was obvious some of the old rebar is starting to rust. What are we going to do . Last time they had to shut down the bridge completely. Does that have to happen again . They want to avoid shutting the entire bridge down. However, what they may have to do because its a double decker bridge, one lane of traffic going east and west on the lower deck and as they fix that, go p upper deck. It could be a real hassle. I dont want to be surprised. I dont want to predict this but given the Structural Integrity of that concrete, we may see more pieces fall out or off until completely fixed which could be months or years. Delays or years. Id avoid that bridge. Stephen stock, thank you so much. I guess the bay bridge alternati alternative. Digged into the safety of the bridge, including the warning signs since last august. Laura samboll, nbc bay area news. The new waterfront arena in San Francisco. Classic. The who is coming to town. The band will perform at the new chase center on october 9th. The concert at the new arena include metallica, Dave Matthews band and john mayer. What a concert lineup this fall. Okay. Lets get a check of the forecast. The giants home opener went off without a hitch but more rain on the way. Tomorrows forecast, and then some sunshine in here on the extended. Lets take you to the microclimate forecast tonight and if youre headed out, were not expecting any heavy widespread rainfall but you still may hit a little bit of shower activity. Right now, from our walnut creek camera looking out to concord. Still plenty of cloud cover overhead and right now, 63 degrees as we continue through tonight. Temperatures dropping down into the 50s and the clouds stay with us. Theres really not a major change expected in the pattern as we head through this weekend. What we have happening is the storm track. It takes all the systems that are out in the pacific and its like a big conveyer belt. Its going to stay set up in a similar pattern weve been used to. That means we get another disturbance riding in from out here in the west and its going to be pushing across california as we move into tomorrow and thats why we have that possibility of rainfall. Youll see at 7 30 in the morning, its not big. But if you have plans up here in the north bay, do expect the chance of some rain and then San Francisco and the peninsula and got the cloud cover here for the east bay and the south bay. By 9 30 in the morning, i do think it will pick up more here across marin, napa, sonoma counties to San Francisco and the peninsula. But heres the best part about tomorrow if you dont want any rainfall. Once we hit the afternoon, we should start to see things clear out, however, the cloud cover is going to stay put. We cant get rid of that. Rainfall totals, not very large. Down here across the south bay, we look at trace amounts to about a tenth of an inch and you can see a little bit of this green color in the north bay. We could have isolated amounts of a quarter of an inch. Well be able to get through this just fine and if you want the sunshine, hold on, its coming within the next seven days. Lets bring you to the temperatures. Might need a light jacket, although i think by the afternoon, 67, its not going to be overly cold here in downtown san jose. Right through contra costa alameda county, looking at some decent temperatures here. 66 in pleasanton and 67 in hayward. Peninsula, redwood city. At 9 Miles Per Hour. E southwest up to San Francisco, 61 here and 59 through the sunset. Napa, 59 here in santa rosa to 63 back in napa. The extended forecast, look at that sunshine. We will have to get over one more speed bump here by monday. A 40 chance of some showers. And then by tuesday, a change in the wind coming more out of the west northwest, 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour. Should help to scour out a lot of this cloud cover weve been stuck with and that would leave us with some sunnier skies by wednesday, thursday, and friday of next week. San francisco temps, upper 50s and low 60s. Inland valleys also looking at some milder weather. Sunday and monday, low 70s. Feel a little bit strange here with the overcast skies and then were dropping down to the mid and upper 60s into next week with that sun. Heading up to lake tahoe, i know you all are with the fresh snow. Next week, we could see another around foot of snowfall. Its nonstop. Safe to say, we are out of any kind of drought and thats the best news. We shouldnt have water restrictions this summer. Great news, thank you, happy friday to you.
