>> would that be a breach? >> i would say yes. >> obviously other leaders of congress are weighing in on all of this. what are you hearing? >> reporter: not surprisingly the reaction is largely falling along party lines. house speaker nancy pelosi called the president's remarks a threat to the legislative branch but house minority leader kevin mccarthy suggested the investigation should end soon. here's the bottom line. democrats are ramping up their efforts today and given that they are in the majority these investigations aren't going away any time soon. >> kristen welker at the white house. senator elizabeth warren is facing a new round ever questions about her past claims of native american ancestry and once again the presidential hopeful is apologizing for the controversy that she cannot seem to shake. nbc white house correspondent peter alexander has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: this is supposed to t be the biggest weekend for elizabeth warren formally announcing she's running for president. but before she even hits the trail she's already off on the wrong foot. >> today i announce -- >> reporter: 48 hours before elizabeth warren is expected to make her white house bid official. >> i'm also sorry for not being more mindful of this decades ago. tribes and only tribes determine tribal citizenship. >> reporter: she still is struggling to diffuse the controversy that trail her for years surrounding her past claims of american native heritage. >> this is who i grew up believing with my brothers. this is our family story. >> reporter: it comes after "the washington post" unearthed this 1986 registration card for the texas bar showing for the first time in her own handwriting warren identified herself as american indian. warren first mentioned her native american roots during her 2012 senate campaign. >> i consider myself as having a native american background. that's what i said. that's what i am. >> reporter: she was accused of claiming native american heritage to advance her career. president trump has taunted her with racial phrases. >> elizabeth warren who i no longer can call pocahontas because she has no indian blood. >> reporter: she took a dna test revealing she has a distant relative. >> you have a native american ancestor. >> reporter: the move sparked criticism from cherokee leaders saying dna test to claim connection to a tribal connection was inappropriate and wrong. warren later apologized. with her eyes set on 2020 and a weekend campaign kick-off in her home state of massachusetts. >> it holds a special place in my heart and i'm excited to share that story with you on february 9th. >> peter, again, she's expected to announce on february 9th. how is this playing in this already kind of crowded democratic field?
