>> the special project that brought the brady kids back together, today, thursday, february 7th, 2019. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. we're so excited about the brady bunch story. >> two grown women to be excited. it's incredible. so many memories. there's the house. they are renovating it. >> amazing. we'll get to that story in just a little bit. our top story virginia's government in a growing state of crisis with its top three leaders now embroiled in a scandal. nbc's jeff bennett is in richmond with the latest developments on this. . jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. scandal is spreading across the state capital. the governor is still refusing calls to step down over that black face photos as two demonstrate officials in line behind him to assume leadership are facing scandals of their own. this morning the virginia capital in crisis. with the commonwealth's governor and lieutenant governor facing a cloud of controversy, virginia's attorney general second in the line of succession, now admits he too once wore black face. mark herring in a statement of apology said in 1980 he and a group of college friends put on wigs and brown makeup to attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time. it comes as governor ralph northam barely hangs on the his job following his own black face photo. northam now denies being in the photo, while recalling and regretting having darkened his skin to dress up like michael jackson for a dance contest in 1984. >> this week has made me sick. just made me sick. from friday to now it's been one bit of bad news after the next and it's all been shocking. and surprising. >> those scandals sending shockwaves as the woman accusing lieutenant governor justin fairfax of sexual assault is breaking her silence. dr. vanessa tyson a college professor saying in a statement that a 2004 encounter with fairfax which she says started as consensual kissing turned into a sexual assault. tyson says fairfax has tried to brand me as a liar to a national audience in service to his political ambitions. fairfax who has said their interaction was 100% consensual and denies a sexual assault released a new statement of his own saying i wish her no harm or humiliation nor do i seek to denigrate her or silence or voice. but i cannot agree with the description of events i know is not true. >> i'm trying to figure out facts. i'm not calling for anybody's resignation. i don't plan to. i got to learn what's going on and ask people not to rush to judgment. >> virginians fed up. >> you have the highest hopes for your own state. and, you know, this definitely isn't anything to be proud of by any means. >> the leadership of the state needs to figure it out and needs to do the right thing. we have no idea what will happen here. if these scandals bring down those top three leaders then what happens? who will be the governor? >> reporter: if the governor, lieutenant governor and the attorney general were all to resign then the governorship would fall to the virginia house speaker who is a conservative republican named kirk cox. he became house speaker by the way as a result of a close race that was determined bay name being pulled out of a bowl. the path forward to say the very least is very unclear. >> all right. jeff in richmond. thank you. also this morning democrats on capitol hill are launching a sweeping new investigation into the president's finances despite his pointed warning to them during the state of the union. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the latest is that the president is already lashing out this morning at democrats for defying him. in one tweet accusing democrats of unlimited presidential harassment and in another saying the dems and their committees are going nuts, a continuation of witch-hunt. the house intelligence committee's new chairman adam schiff announcing a sweeping five point probe of president trump's businesses, personal finances, and possible ties to russia. >> the president has gotten used to the idea that congress doesn't do oversight because for the last two years the republican majority has essentially been missing in action when it comes to being a co-equal branch of government. >> reporter: the president hitting back calling adam schiff a political hack. >> no other politician has to go through that. it's called presidential harassment. and it's unfortunate. it really does hurt our country. >> reporter: adam schiff responding on twitter writing i can understand why the idea of meaningful oversight terrify if is the president. several of his close associates are going to trial. it comes just hours after the president warned about what he called ridiculous partisan investigations during the state of the union. >> if there is going to be peace and legislation there cannot be war and investigation. >> reporter: it's not the first time the president has spoken out about investigations into his finances. telling this to the "new york times" back in 2017. >> if mueller was looking at your finances, and your family finances unrelated to russia, is that a red line? >> a good question. the bottom line for all these democratic candidates there's little room for error right now. the democratic field is already diverse and growing and there's new polling that shows most democrats across the country want joe biden to enter the race and progressive favorite, beto o'rourke will make a decision about his political future whether he runs before the end of this month. all right, peter alexander at the white house. thank you. craig joins the table. another story we're following. >> good morning. a federal investigation this morning shining some new light on a controversial plea deal for a wealthy investor accused of molesting dozens of underage girls. >> this is an important development in the case we've covered many times. this decision to investigate reflects the me too movement potentially touching on the trump administration and many other powerful people. most important, of course, impacts the women who took the risk to come forward with these allegations. jeffrey epstein ran in powerful circles and counted on people like bill clinton and prince andrew among his many friends. now a new federal investigation is under way into whether justice department attorneys may have committed professional misconduct agreeing to a 2008 plea deal allowing him to serve just over a year in jail after being accused of having sex with underage girls. the new justice department probe comes after "the miami herald" tracked down many alleged victims. >> i was 16. >> i was 16. >> i started going to him when i was 14. >> reporter: the original report from the palm beach police department were promised money for massages. >> he flipped over and said you can go ahead and take off your shirt and pants. >> reporter: the accounts include accusations from indecent exposure to inappropriate touching and rape. according to earlier court filings it's alleged epstein preyed on at least 40 underage girls. >> we believe that this would end up in a prosecution that would incarcerate mr. epstein for the remainder of his life. >> reporter: epstein struck a plea deal in 2008 pleading guilty to solicitation of prostitution and only served 13 months in a county jail. >> one of the most lenient deals for a serial child molester probably in history. >> reporter: the former u.s. attorney who approved the deal is now president trump's secretary of labor. alexander acosta of asked about the plea deal during his confirmation hearing last year. he said there was broad agreement to accept the deal and argued that it was originally a state case. and that the department of justice got involved to ensure epstein got jail time and was forced to register as a sex offender. the 2008 agreement protects epstein and anyone who worked with him from federal charges. registered as a sex offender but can travel to homes in new york, florida and the caribbean. this morning we reached out to alexander acosta who has not responded. >> any chance that the plea deal gets overturned? of a building in istanbul, turkey 18 hours after that building collapsed. she was found under a pile of concrete. they loaded her on to a stretcher and carried her to a waiting ambulance. the total number of people rescued was 13. the building collapsed on wednesday. unclear how many are unaccounted for. >> surveillance video captured the heart stopping moment when is a train pulled away from a station with the father of a baby on the platform and the little one still on board the train. this happened in cleveland and here we go. you see the man he places the baby carrier on train seat. he walks away to have a cigarette outside on the platform. moments later you see another passenger on train knocking on the glass telling the father the train is about to leave. too late. the door close. it pulls away. the father is running alongside the platform. eventually the passenger on board alerted the driver. within minutes the train returned to the station. the father was united with his baby. that's the sound of moms heads exploded every where. what you left the baby to go outside to have a cigarette. >> this one also in cleveland. a growing problem in this country. kids getting sick florida last year five middle schooler went to the hospital after eating thc infused candy. 12 illinois high schoolers were hospitalized after eating similar gummies in 2016. as concerns grow over thc in edibles health officials are raising questions about another derivative called cbd. doesn't actually make people high but it's touted as a treatment for wide range of treatments from anxiety to pain and cancer. those juices have not been approved by fda. this week new york city's health department cracked down banning businesses from adding cbd to food and drinks until they determine whether or not it's safe. the states of maine and ohio and the city of los angeles are also taking a closer look at cbd. >> we see it every where now. but we don't really know all that much about it, do we, cbd oil? >> cbd is still classified by the federal government as a schedule one narcotic which puts alongside heroin and lsd with the exception of one fda approved prescription drug. researchers have a hard time conducting the kinds of studies that would prove some of this stuff. all these claims that are out, there it's tough to know if they are legitimate or not until you have research behind it and tough to do the research. >> you can study it because the federal government thinks it's illegal but the states are legalizing in it. >> is there a movement afoot to change that >> definitely. there's a big push to get the federal government on board with declaring it legal, we're talking about marijuana, legalizing marian is a big conversation. so it's all out there. >> thank you. we'll fellow missionaries. now, they want to make sure it never happens again. >> reporter: if i asked all of you as a group, what's this about for you, is there a word? >> truth. >> justice. >> justice. >> reporter: five women speaking out on national tv for the first time, exposing years of sexual abuse by men devoted to preaching the word of god. as children between the late '70s and early '90s, they lived in some of the hardest to reach places on the globe. ♪ there is power >> reporter: their parents sent to work as christian missionaries by a florida organization then known as new tribes mission. the kids were placed in boarding schools, where dorm fathers were in charge. they would lead devotional readings each night, then put the girls to bed. all say that's where the sexual abuse happened. >> he would tuck me in at night, and he would just sit on my bed and stay too long. >> reporter: carrie and bonnie both lived in senegal, west africa, where they say they were abused by their dorm dad, david brooks. over in the philippines, joy, jaasiel and kelly say they were abused by their dorm dad, who was also kelly's biological father, leslie emory. >> he'd put the chair next to my bed and put his hands under the covers. to this day, i sleep with a pillow on either side of me. >> i was roommates with almost every single girl that was molested or raped. i had to pretend i was asleep, as well. >> reporter: you okay, bonnie? >> i need a minute. >> reporter: when carrie finally told her parents what happened to her, she says the mission tried to cover it up. >> the mission leadership told my dad on the phone, you are going to ruin this man's ministry if you keep talking about this. >> reporter: so he continued to serve as a dorm dad in senegal? >> yes. >> reporter: after more complaints, the mission let david brooks go back to the u.s. when kelly reported alleged abuse at the hands of her father, she says mission leaders tried to silence her, as well. >> i was called in as a a 15-year-old with three men in a room. they told me to not say anything. >> reporter: her family was abruptly sent back to the u.s. nobody calls the police? nobody tells the authorities in the u.s. at least? >> no. no one. >> reporter: new tribes mission admits, more needed to be done. child abuse in any situation is heartbreaking. our heart goes out to any victims, a spokesperson told nbc news. in 2010, new tribes commissioned an outside investigation into only what happened in senegal. it found more than 20 children were sexually abused over two decades, and david brooks, the dorm dad in senegal, was, by far, the biggest offender. your abusers have not been charged with a crime. >> no. >> reporter: are they on a registered sex offender registry? >> no. >> i think that's the scariest thing, is thinking that they're still out there. >> reporter: we tracked down david brooks in a small town an hour south of atlanta. i'd like to ask you some questions about senegal, if i could. >> you may not. >> reporter: i may not? >> you may not. >> reporter: do you want to say whether an investigation found you sexually abused multiple children, do you want to respond to that? >> no response, whatsoever. >> reporter: leslie emery, the dorm dad from the philippines, lives in virginia and agreed to speak. he confessed to abusing missionary kids but not his own daughter, kelly. >> i did sexually molest those eight girls there when we were living at the dorm. it always happened at night. everybody was sleeping. >> reporter: do you think you should have gone to jail? >> yeah, should have been decapitated, probably. >> reporter: as adults, every one of these women reached out to law enforcement authorities and were told it was too late to press charges. how many of you worry this might still be happening? >> every day. >> mm-hmm. >> i think about that every day. >> i think that's why this is so important, is just to show others there is no shame. >> reporter: you have strength. >> i'm strong for the little girl that was never able to say anything. i'm strong for her. i'm a strong woman. i'll do my best to protect anybody who sees this and wants to speak out. you can come and talk to me. come and talk to me. i will protect you. >> ethnos 360, formerly new tribes, made improvements in child protection policies, have child safety training, and hired an independent team to review on investigate ministry locations. they say staff members were terminated and disciplined. they set up a perpetual fund to assist victims with counseling. the women we interviewed said they were told they reached a limit and are no longer reimbursed for any counseling. two of the women did reach settlements. >> blown away by the strength of these women. >> yeah. >> you wonder, were these two guys ever reported? >> not to law enforcement at the time of the alleged crimes. ethnos 360 told us they contacted several authorities over the years, including, they said, local law enforcement officials where both men were living. we called the sheriffs and the police in virginia and in georgia, and they told us they had no idea that accused pedophiles were living in their communities. >> geez. >> these women, it is incredible to see the five of them there, and some of them knew each other's children, presumably. now they found each other. what made them -- what gave them the courage to speak out? >> it is a good question. i asked that, and they said justice. they feel like telling their stories now. obviously, the me too movement and everything that's happened in the past couple of years has given them kind of a new voice, they've felt. they'd never spoken on a national level. they know it'll open floodgates. they have a blog they've been keeping up for years that women have written into. i suspect they'll get a lot more. >> do they still have the boarding schools? >> three are in existence now, ethnos 360, the former new tribes mission. eight children are in the three. it is far less, far less than it used to be. most kids are homeschooled. >> what an extraordinary moment. you pick up the phone and call this man who has been accused, and he says, yeah, i did it, and i should have been decapitated. >> it was incredible. i was, obviously, on the inside, feeling a lot in that moment. but he apologized, as well. he feels remorse about what he did. again, has never faced any consequence. >> right. >> legally, it is complicated why that is but, essentially, it was too long ago, and it happened outside here in virginia. governor ralph northam still refusing calls to step down over that racist yearbook photo, as now the attorney general, mark herring, admits he, too, once wore blackface. herring is apologizing for what he said happened when he was an undergrad. he and a group of friends put on wigs and brown makeup to dress as rappers they used to listen to at the time. the woman accusing the lieutenant governor, justin fairfax, of sexual assault, she's breaking her silence, publicly detailing her claim. it is an allegation that fairfax categorically and vehemently denies. and we have president trump weighing in on a twitter. the president says, democrats at the top are killing the great state of virginia. if the three failing politicians were republicans, far stronger action would be taken. three scandals sending shock waves across the state. nobody seems to know what comes next. hoda? >> geoff bennett in richmond, thank you. just one day after the president warned congress about investigating him, house democrats launched a probe into his business and personal finances. the new chairman of the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, says the investigation will also look into the president's possible ties to russia. house speaker nancy pelosi says it is the responsibility of congress to exercise oversight, but the president called the investigation presidential harassment. the trump administration is also moving to roll back obama-era restrictions on so-called payday loans. the rules require lenders to check the borrower's ability to repay high-interest loans, often due within 30 days. the trump administration wants to protect consumer's access to credit, but critics say it can be predatory, forcing consumers into high fees and debt. dramatic video from texas shows the frightening moments after a construction elevator and scaffolding collapsed. one worker was dangling off a building several stories aboveground. fortunately, he was wearing a safety line and was able to pull himself up to the roof unharmed. however, a woman on the sidewalk was seriously injured by falling debris. two construction workers were treated at the scene for minor
