[ cheers and applause ] ♪ welcome, everybody. welcome to "the tonight show." let's get to some jokes. guys, today is the first day of november. turkeys were like, "anyone else have a weird feeling that something terrible is about to happen?" [ laughter and applause ] let's get to some news here. the mid-term elections are just five days away. president trump couldn't believe they're so close. he said, "so many people to offend, so little time." [ laughter and applause ] i figured that out. i figured out the smile, yeah. >> steve: come on. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: i saw that last night trump held a rally in florida where he attacked immigrants, democrats, and the media. even the biggest trump supporters in the crowd were like, "play some new stuff!" [ laughter and applause ] gonna head over to -- gonna head over to geoffrey's toy box after work if you wanna come by. [ light laughter ] ladies and gentlemen, let's give it up for cinnamon. [ air horn ] guys, listen to this, a school administrator in louisiana was just arrested after she showed up to school drunk during alcohol awareness week. [ light laughter ] to be fair, she did make everyone very aware of alcohol. [ laughter and applause ] i heard about a man who was caught tasting soup at a buffet directly from the ladle, then putting the ladle back into the soup. [ audience oohs ] but eventually, the manager came over and escorted bernier sanders back to his campaign bus. [ laughter and applause ] "it was delicious chicken noodle." and finally you guys, as i mentioned, the mid-term elections are on tuesday which means the candidates are wrapping up their campaigns and making their closing statements to voters. these are messages they want voters to remember above all else. so let's take a look at some senate candidates' closing statements. first up, here's florida senate candidate rick scott. his closing statement is, "vote for me so i will finally be able to stop harry potter." [ laughter and applause ] next up is maine senator angus king. his closing statement is, "when women ask if i'm the guy who landed that plane in the hudson river, i just go with it." [ laughter and applause ] "sure, sure." here's geoff diehl from massachusetts. his closing statement is, "remember, a vote for me is a a vote for uncle joey from 'full house.'" [ laughter and applause ] next up is texas senator ted cruz. his closing statement is, "i've wanted to represent the great people of texas since the day i was spawned." [ audience oohs ] [ applause ] here's his opponent beto o'rourke. his closing statement is, "in the real world, i'm a seven, but in the senate, i'm a ten." [ laughter and applause ] here's michigan senator debbie stabenow. her closing statement is, "let me put it this way. i didn't get this sears portrait done to not get elected." [ laughter and applause ] here's roger wicker from mississippi. his closing statement is, "i'll unite the country, just like i have united my upper lip and my top front teeth." [ laughter and applause ] up next, here's jon tester from montana. his closing statement is, "i have the flattest flat top in all of montana." [ laughter and applause ] and finally, his opponent matt rosendale said, "no, i have the flattest flat top in all of montana." [ cheers and applause ] and we got great music tonight. we have a performance from country music super group pistol annies, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] pistol annies. "interstate gospel." guys, yesterday was halloween and people were out wearing their costumes all over new york city. so, we want to have a little fun with that. so we sent our writer arthur down to washington square park to ask people one question about halloween. but, what they didn't know is that he never actually gets to the question. [ light laughter ] i'll show you what i mean. it's time for a segment we call, "the big question." [ cheers and applause ] ♪ ♪ what's the big question ♪ ♪ >> so as i'm sure you know, today is october 31st, better known as halloween. that name, of course being a a contraction of all hallows eve or hallows evening, the harvest time holiday covered in cobwebs and dedicated to celebrating all things ghoulish -- [ light laughter ] -- creepy, scary, hairy, kooky, spooky and all together ooky. during which children and adults alike dress to startle, frighten and petrify in any number of costumes. be they classic monsters like vampire, mummy, witch, zombie obviously, wicked witch, well-mannered witch, vampire once again, wolfman, goof clown, goose down or new non-monster favorites like the dark voyager from mobile game sensation "fortnite." or any number of heroes from the marvel or d.c. cinematic -- universes. including, but certainly not limited to -- [ laughter ] batman, spider-man, superman, aquaman, wonderman, wonderwoman, catwoman, aquawoman, joker woman, the amazing hulk, or of course, deadpool, who, despite having the word dead in his name, is not a movie monster of old but rather a foul mouthed anti-hero and friend of the x-men who does away with his foes by deploying his unmatched arsenal of put-downs and one-liners. an attitude that dovetails beautifully with halloween's impish trickster spirit. whether wearing said costume to various spook-taculars such as apple bobbings, haunted houses, haunted hay rides, trails of terror, corn mazes, concerts on the plaza, emerging artist series or just good old fashioned trick or -- [ laughter ] [ laughter ] treating. trick or treating of course being the popular activity in which young people knock on the doors of neighbors, all in an effort to score a scoop of sugary treats to plunk in their plastic orange pumpkin pails. be those treats candy corn, candy bars, both full sized and fun sized, pixie sticks, wax lips, fun dips, laffy taffy, or my personal favorite and everyone's personal favorite -- well -- >> candy cane? >> no, dots, dots, dots. [ laughter ] to say nothing of little baggies full of pennies, designed for more noble philanthropic causes. but just as the tastiest halloween treat of all is in many ways -- [ laughter ] safety, could it not be argued that the greatest halloween frights are the masks that we choose to wear each day in hopes that being rewarded with whatever that un-noble thing is that necessitates us putting on our metaphorical masks in the first place. i must then ask on this, the spookiest day of the year -- we good? >> yeah. >> great, thanks. back to you, jimmy.
