>> reporter: this is what the destruction looks like. the storm surge picked up this home and tossed it across the street. the debris field here goes on and on and on. t a setch of the florida panhandle is gone. mexico beach, a popular tourist destination, is in ruins. block after block destroyed after a direct hit from hurricane michael. >> we had a lot of people lose their homes. all their homes are just washed out. this is devastating. >> mathis is my bedroom. >> there is no communication. i have no idea about the outside world and nobody knows about me. >> reporter: we managed to speak to his wife briefly by satellite phone to let him know he is safe. he is without power and without phone lines after the hurricane tore through the region. the storm surge slammed into these buildings, leaving behind total devastation. search and rescue teams going house to house looking for survivors. >> it is pretty bad. structures are completely demolished. thank god that most of the people left and they evacuated. >> reporter: farther down on saint george island, a security camera captured the dangerous storm surge. water and debris swirling around the home there. >> this is our home. >> reporter: in panama city, a boat dealership. candace says she's not going anywhere. >> we will rebuild. we will be fine. >> i knew it was going to be a cat four with a direct hit, never would have stayed. >> reporter: after sweeping through georgia around the carolinas, it is causing flooding in virginia, leaving a trail of destruction. today the clean up in the florida panhandle is just beginning. >> i have nothing left except the clothes and my two good dogs. that's it. >> those images are devastating. and you wonder how tough it is forers to get in there and help out. >> reporter: they had to cut a path into this area because the main road in and out was covered with debris. the big challenge now is communication. the pull extent of this damage is not yet known because the only way first responders are able to communicate is with a satellite phone. the death toll is now to 11 and authorities fear that number is going to rise. >> rebuilding is going to take a long time. now to some news just breaking this morning. pope francis has accepted the resignation of cardinal donald weurl. it comes after he was implicated in two major sex abuse scandals. ann thompson joins us with that story. >> reporter: good morning. this accepting his resignation, pope francis wrote an unusual letter praising the cardinal. he also seems to buy weurl's long held defense that he made mistakes in dealing with predatory priests, as opposed to covering up their actions. this morning cardinal weurl expressed his gratitude to pope francis and begged forgiveness. though, a confidant and ally of pope francis, he could not survive the two scandals that have shake tennessee catholic church. a protester last month interrupting the cardinal's talk detailed in the pennsylvania grand jury report. the grand jury concluded he mishandled cases of abuse of priests as bishop of pittsburgh, accusations he denies, denies disputed by the pennsylvania attorney general. >> the public comments that he has made directly contradict the church's own documents that we found in the secret archives, and that's all spelled out in the grand jury report. >> the holy gospel according to matthew. >> then there were claims of sexual misconduct by his pr predecess predecessor. the vatican ambassador to the u.s. claim they knew he preyed on them for sex. the pope refuses to respond directly, and the vatican is promising a thorough investigation. but for some of the faithful, it is just too much. in the pittsburgh area, vandals defaced the sign at the high school name for weurl. dozens of teachers refused to attend his opening mass for the school year. even the decon who assisted him abandoned him. >> in particular fostering a genuine sense of healing for the victims. >> what happens now? it's key evidence behind criminal charges for a retired firefighter after he shot his shotgun at a 14-year-old. overnight, we spoke with the teenager and his mother. the shocking moments caught on home security camera, shown to a michigan jur 14-year-old brennan walker, knocking on jeffrey ziegler's front door to ask for directions. he had gotten lost walking to school, after he missed the bus. >> he looked angry. >> reporter: instead of directions, the unarmed high school freshman got the scare of his life. ziegler, a 52-year-old retired firefighter greeted walker with a shotgun, firing once as the teen ran away.t mae i didn't fet because there was a lot of adrenaline pumping through me. >> reporter: walker's mother said she watched the video once, after it took place last april. >> i don't look at it in court. i look away. i can only watch my son almost be murdered once. >> there's a lot more to the story than what's being told. >> reporter: ziegler told investigators he thought he was being robbed. saying he tripped, which caused his shotgun to accidentally fire. authorities say the video proves he clearly aimed the weapon. >> that's just completely unacceptable on every level. i don't know how you would justify it. but it doesn't pass the muster. >> reporcted wo wrap today, walker's mother hopes justice will prevail. >> on the outside, we might seem like we're okay >> oh, it's so, so complicated because everyone can see your life at all times. >> i think nowadays, there's just, like, so much to it. like, you got to wait three minutes before you can open a snapchat. or don't like his instagram post too soon. >> it's a lot of pressure. you're creating this perfect image. >> reporter: we talked to a group of girls who admit they stress over every detail posted on social media. and, yeah, the guys are aware. another girl and they get a little jealous or they start tracking you through snapchat maps and it can get complicated. >> reporter: they are talking about a snapchat feature that tells where they're friends are and who are hanging out without them. so much of their love lives are around that tiny screen. >> when you create a tinder profile, that's almost like your brand. >> people see you and have a he just say tinder? >> we gravitate towards tinder. you say you're 18. you put yourself out there and swiping. >> reporter: it's not just tinder. a lot of parents don't know many of their kids have two different instagram accounts. an insta and a finsta. two different instagrams? >> some people have five. >> there's different rules for each account. you can post whatever you want on your private. but post the good things on your main. >> reporter: wow. >> you can't post on your normal private. you have your private private. >> reporter: private private? >> we have like six accounts. >> reporter: and these days, if it's an app or account, it's the screen of a phone where sparks first start to fly. >> so much judgment off of a picture. a picture can say a thousand words. then again, it captures just a second of time. >> i feel like the problem with seeing a picture and finding someone and basing it on attractionhe whole problem. no matter where you are, tinder, snapchat, instagram, it's a picture. >> reporter: as the picture of young love begins to fade, then comes the breakup. after a breakup, they're stalking. >> wyou want to make sure they'e having a miserable time, too. >> you want to make sure they're not talking to anyone you don't like. >> make sure you don't double-tap and you're good. >> reporter: do you fantasize about the time that none of this existed? do you think, man, must have been nice growing up without any of this? >> yes. >> yeah. >> i mean, all the time. >> we think about that. the whole idea of having a high school crush when there wasn't social media. >> reporter: you feel bummed that you missed out on that? >> yes. i do, for sure. it would be nice to live the typical '70s movie dream. but what are you going to do? >> reporter: you guys want to know what else they have in common with us? they worry about the young ones. one kid said he was worried, he got his first phone in fifth grade. he said, that's not the worst of it. kids are getting them in first grade now. and there in elementary school, some of the playground crushes are happening on their phones. >> oh. >> what do you think of that? babyback ribs. i'm going to make the you rub the ribs down. brown sugar for sweetness, salt and paprika. have you made ribs before? >> of course. >> you're going to do something i don't do. you cook them before. i want to talk about why you do m directly on the grill? >> yeah. low and slow. >> this type of meat, to make sure they're nice and moist, you steam them first. you sea right? with what you're seasoning them with right now, with a dry rub. and we're going to cover them with this long, long tent. and we're going to stick them in the oven. >> how long? >> 300 degrees for a while. you want them to slowly cook down. there you go. nice. i didn't know if you were going to touch them with your hands or not. >> there's another cooking process? >> two cooking processes to make sure they're nice and moist. seal them in, like you're wrapping a christmas gift. you cook fish in tinfoil. it's the same idea. >> you have that in the oven. >> what are we cooking? >> this is the sauce. if you don't want to use a store-bought sauce. we're making our own. these are italian plums. one of the best ways, you can squeeze it and the pit will come out. squeeze it. like put in some muscle, craig. >> you set me up for that. you set me up for that. >> the other one i did in the kitchen didn't squeeze good. >> my apologieapologies. >> we're good. the other option is to cut it in half. >> that's the easier option. it's the easier option. >> it is fun to do. you know, i didn't think it was squeezed out that much. >> leave the skin on everything. new england dish. >> all of the spice, itines or . and i take the habanero out. i'm not going to do this. >> no. >> we're going to take a blender and blend it. it's like this. >> what's the verdict? >> oh, my gosh. insane. >> and you put the sauce all over the ribs. are we running out of time? i don't want to leave new england out. you brush it on the ribs. >> that sauce is delicious. >> right. it doesn't take that long to make. you can do any fruit. but the plums are good. then, you grill it. >> how long? >> three or four minutes. to get a nice crust. >> seafood stew. >> you make this in one minute. you make it in this. a slow cooker. >> a slow cooker. >> sorry. i got sidetracked. fennel, shallots, garlic, red pepper flakes. this is really easy. tomato paste. tomatoes. get that paste out. go. and a bay leaf. you cook this for three hours. let it sit together. wine and fish broth. >> throw it in there and walk away. >> everything dumps in. after three hours, close the lid, it's cooked and you add all of the fishles. y dump it in for 30 minutes and it's ready to go. get crusty bread. or you can take football cookies. >> what are the football cookies?
