Eshoo points out that only took three days and at that point ford wanted anonymity. Would it have been possible for her complaint to go forward without her being known . In retrospect, do you had i it would have made a difference in terms of watching the way the process has gone . I dont think so. Reporter eshoo says with the vote looming its time for senators to focus on judge kavanaughs overall behavior. Belligerent, disrespectful, really his words dripping with poison about in a partisan way. His grudges. I dont know who would really want to go into his court. Well, that mysterious crack in the Millennium Tower window it turns out has nothing to do with the fact that that building is leaning and sinking. Thats according to a Consulting Firm, which says something hit the window on the outside up on the 36th floor. Investigative reporter jaxonder second opinion. Reporter nbc bay area was the first to report how the 36th floor window suddenly cracked over labor day. But this report by a palo altobased Consulting Firm rules out tilting as the cause. It concludes an unknown object hit the exterior and identified this as the point of impact. Consultants allana buick bers found nothing wrong with the actual window and conclude the towers sinking and tilting played no role. A second consultant working for the homeowners agrees. But city supervisor aaron peskin does not. This report is frankly bizarre. It comes to a conclusion that this was that the window cracking was due to an external impact, but they give absolutely no evidence whatsoever that anybody can rely on. Reporter the Homeowners Association has written a letter to the city, asking to take down protective scaffolding on the sidewalk below and cancel cityordered inspections on hundreds of other windows, saying theres no longer any need. Williams strong is spokesman for the department of building inspection. They may be expressing a particular desire, but whether or not staff agrees with that i guess remains to be seen. Reporter supervisor peskin has already made up his mind after reviewing the abb report. He says hes troubled the consultants relied heavily on findings about windows on the side of the tower affected the least by tilting. We all want this to be a oneoff event. We hope that its not a function of the buildings continued settlement and tilting. But we need a independent report. I am not taking a. B. B. s word for it. Our department of building inspection needs to insist that a second report be done. Reporter but strong says the city is not in the habit of seeking second opinions. Reporter dangerous words, says erica elliott, the sexual asxault Prevention Program manager at Community Solutions in the south bay. And that creates silence. Reporter she also says the president and the public need to understand the comrexes the complexities of trauma. Are its not uncommon that survivors cant remember all the details. Facts included in special prosecutor rachel mitchells re needs to be done to stop victim shaming. That was Marianne Favro reporting. In new york state tax investigators are looking into a bombshell New York Times report which claims that the president and his family used questionable tax schemes and fraud to hide income from the irs. Its one of the longest reports in the newspapers history. The times outlines a pattern of what it calls deception which start whend President Trumps father transferred a billion dollars in wealth to his children. The investigation shows enabled the family to dodge a half billiondollar tax bill and pay just 52 million. It also refutes President Trumps claim that he built his empire on a 1 million loan from his father. The times reporters claim the president received the equivalent of 413 million. The narrative of donald trump as a selfmade man is just not true. A lot of people voted for him on the idea hes this smart businessman and hes going to bring those principles to the white house. The president today called the article an old, boring and often told hit piece. And while the statute of limitations has expired on possible violations experts say the president could be on the hook for tens of millions of dollars in civil fines. Well, next week marks one year since the north bay fires. We saw our neighbors and friends lose irreplaceable items, photos, documents, and even family heirlooms. It turns out a lot of those items burned in what people thought were fireproof safes. Thats what the homeowners thought when they put their precious things in there. But they found out that fireproof doesnt necessarily mean fireproof. Our consumer investigator chris chmura has been working a lot with north bay fire victims and he joins us tonight, and that is such a disappointment to those north bay fire victims, chris. Not just surprised too. Despite what the label or advertising might say, fireproof safes can and do melt. North bay fire victims learned firsthand that fireproofmitatio. Are is. Mike cobb is rebuilding his home from. I lucky to get out with my family and dogs and cats but none of my possessions. He lost everything, including two safes. Both of them just completely disintegrated. Reporter that he figured were fireproof. Well, you couldnt recognize it. So it was basically just the bottom that i can tell was the safe and the top was this crumbly material. It melted. It melted. Absolutely. Just disintegrated. Melted, yeah. Reporter sam brinker hoffs safe melted in the north bay fires too. She says her safe was also supposed to be fireproof. Supposed to be. Reporter take a look online. Many safes are marketed as fireproof. But what does that word mean . It turns out the u. S. Fire administration and the National Institutes of standards and technology dont define or regulate the term fireproof. So we called seven u. S. Safe companies that advertise fireproof safes. We asked for their definition of fireproof. We got five different answers including an arizona maker following a swedish definition, a South Carolina Company Using chinese criteria, and a korean benchmark. Some safe makers indicate their products meet a u. L. Standard. U. L. Stands for underwriters laboratory, in chicago. Its engineers conduct safety tests on everything from microwaves to patio doors. They push products to their limits. Thu l. V this u. L. Video shows how it grades safes, in a massive furnace to heats up to 2,000 degrees. Safes that survive can earn a u. L. Seal. But u. L. Told us those safes should be labeled fire resistant, notfireproof. Heres another thing. U. L. Says most consumergrade safes are only rated for 30 to 60 minutes of fire endurance. Thats ampleandalone house fir firefighters usually respond quickly. But in wildfires like the north bay, entire neighborhoods ignite. Overwhelming fire crews. Homes can burn longer, like sams and mikes likely did, melting their fireproof safes. Even though it says fireproof, its fireproof for like a kitchen fire or something, not the kind of fire that came through here. Reporter should you trust the word fireproof . The American Society for testing and materials says no. It sets voluntary standards for many products and calls fireproof an inappropriate and misleading term. So whats a consumer to do . You do want to do research. We agree with mike. Ask the safe manufacturer how long your model can withstand a fire. Then ask yourself, should your familys Fire Evacuation plan include a few seconds if its safe to take irreplaceable items out of your safe . I now realize how much i didnt know, that it was not fireproof. I mean, it is, but up to a certain point. Heres another option. Consider choosing a portable safe that you can take with you when you evacuate. Of course that allows the thieves who might break into your home to also take it with them. So perhaps figure it out in the evacuation plan. When you think youre covered, you think youve covered all bases, and then youre not. Yeah. The first time we saw this we heard somebody on tv saying my safe melted. And we said, what . How does that happen . Especially when its all over the advertising. Do the resu, h,chris. Lets say theyve got to pick up their kids or theyve got to go do that one extra job. At the end of the day its just a choice. Reporter the intersection of bancroft and telegraph avenues always buzzing with activities here at the uc Berkeley Campus but at 11 18 this morning phones started ringing and buzzing. Students looked at their screens and asked their friends if they do got the national text. It just says this is a test of the National Emergency alert system. No action is needed. Reporter it might be the biggest drill in american history. Today fema tested out the president ial alert system by texting 75 of all mobile phones in america, across all major carriers. I was scared of what was happening. But it was just a practice round i guess for them. Reporter the warnings are for extreme situations only, like terror attacks, natural disasters, or an incoming missing attack. Unlike amber alerts and weather alerts, these are texts you cannot block. It is efficient in getting the word across because everyone is using their phone, everyones on their phone. So i understand why they would do it. Reporter and unlike President Trumps tweets the president does not directly send the messages. These alerts are not supposed to be political. This is a test. Reporter in the event of an actual emergency the president ial alert will include whats he going to consider and instructions for how to as a National Emergency . Respond a safe. Uc Berkeley Student darcy clark says she did not receive an alert. Shes not alone. On twitter many at t users complained to the carrier that they did not receive the text. At t responded by saying there is an issue affecting Wireless Data Services for customers on the west coast. The company said the issue is not related to the president ial text alert. Most Emergency Call Centers here in the east bay did not see a change in call volumes but over in marin county one person dialed 911 to tell dispatch that they got the alert, what now . Two other people also in marin county contacted authorities to complain they did not receive the alert. Thats the latest here in berkeley. Im melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. That was very interesting. We were reporting that this was going to happen last night, we said it, and yet this morning i think we were all like whoa, its happening. It was loud too. It came through. Oh, man. Rain . Well, weve got a few alerts for folks that are doing any traveling tonight. Picking up on storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. Lets go ahead and bring to you that and our microclimate forecast. Most of the activity has been through the East San Jose foothills at least earlier this afternoon and through parts of the east bay as far out as tracy. You can see where most of the lightning strikes are right now, moving into the central valley. Well take you into the toptwo top spots were watching. The first one right hoo err in in pleasanton. We have some rainfall coming down right now right across that 580 corridor. We know how busy that usually is this time of the night. Its just going to make the traffic at a crawl. If youre expecting anyone theyre going to be even slower likely than normal. This is all moving off to the north. This would continue likely to hold off on rain tonight. The second zone were watching is off to the south. While we did get a little rain in the south bay today theres another area bubbling up. Its going to be hard for us to Stay Together because of the higher elevations. Its to steal a lot of the moisture. But theres a chance this could continue into morgan hill by 7 15. Maybe even san jose. Through tomorrow morning we see a lot of our chances pretty much go down to zero. Teeratures in the 60s and we have the clouds with us. That will bring to us 64 in the trivalley and 63 in the south bay. Also and a slight chance for the east bay 123ris, and the north bay. Through the day tomorrow numbers cooling off a couple of degrees. As the storm pulls on out of here. Less humidity as well p. 75 in morgan hill, 71 cupertino. Across the east bay 74 pittsburg, 75 danville. Not much of a change as you go close to the ba the peninsula also looking beautiful. Redwood city may support some of the fleet week stuff happening. We have 60s from the marina right over to the mission. And across theginng to dry out half to over an inch of rain. Should be a much nicer afternoon at 72 in sonoma. Im going to go ahead and fast forward things into the next weather change we see happening and the problem with what could be moving in. We have two Different Things that are going to be occurring. We have High Pressure building in the pacific. We have low pressure developing across the four corners. Thats important because these two things are going to interact. Air flows from High Pressure to low pressure. This is going to create a vacuum as this area moves from High Pressure to low pressure its going to pull this area across Northern California and its going to create a dry northnortheasterly wind for the bay area. We think once we hit saturday night and sunday. Thats going to increase the fire threat. Gusts right now 15 to 35 miles per hour, may prompt a red flag fire warning.
