Alameda county public defender brendan wood says courthouses need to be offlimits to i. C. E. Agents. The officer says he tried to pull a man over for speeding when the suspect drove his car at the deputy. Were told thats when the deputy opened fire and the suspect took off. They came armed with rifles, k9s and drones, searching door to door, one street after another. We are nervous. We are scared. Reporter under the watchful eye of a helicopter searching from above. We had schools on lockdown, neighbors stuck in their homes. Reporter three hours, on the hunt for a man accused of trying to run down an Alameda County sheriffs deputy on his motorcycle with a car, mothre tn once. He attempted to run him over and kill him. Reporter the officer is okay, released from the hospital with some injuries to his arm and hand. He says he tried to pull over a person driving a dark suv for speeding in hathaway avenue in heywood. He does that job every day, traffic enforcement. Reporter the driver, described as a hispanic man in his 20s, allegedly tried to run the deputy over with his car, then drove into this neighborhood when the deputy started shooting at him. I heard at least four gunshots. Reporter there were five bullet holes in the windshield and nbc bay areas sky ranger flew over the scene. We did a quick review of the body camera footage. It shows the officer firing into the windshield of that car. The suspect ducked down underneath the dashboard. Reporter investigators say he ditched the car and took off running. Thats when the massive search began. And the search was called off three hours later. Investigators are now searching that suv for any clues about who that suspect may be. Three weeks ago he was thrown from his motorcycle and pinned under a truck after being hit on highway 4 and concord. The driver arrested on felony dui charges. Officer lendway broke both legs and is still in the hospital. He posted on his facebook today, i am looking forward to a complete recovery. Expect delays at sfo. The suspect who was run over, his condition is unknown. Witnesses describe the injuries as severe. He backed up and the car stopped on him. Its got to be a thousandpound car. Severe conditions now exist in santa barbara, ventura, and l. A. Counties. The statewide snowpack is less than 30 of average this time of year. Todays measurements certainly add more urgency to local plans to tackle our drought issues. The Santa Clara Valley Water District is proposing an 800 million project to turn one of the areas smallest reservoirs into the biggest. Here at anderson reservoir, it holds a lot of water, but not enough if or when theres another drought. And that makes tomorrow a crucial Tipping Point for the Water Districts expansion plans. I feel that we need a lot more rain in the next few months. Reporter anderson and morgan hills, the south bays largest reservo reservoir, can hold 90,000 feet of water. Visitors we talked to say they know all about todays snowpack measurement and the weather forecast. The drought is very serious. Things are drying out. You can see the hills are getting brown again. Im keeping my fingers crossed that well have more water. Reporter so is the Santa Clara Valley Water District. In a bold 800 million proposal, the district wants to expand one of the areas smallest, most obscure reservoirs, from 6,000 feet capacity to about 140,000. It would be the largest project our Water District will have ever tried to do. Reporter tomorrow the state Water Commission will be evaluating the pacheco reservoir proposal to decide if the benefits outweigh the costs. This kind of reservoir would really help us out in multiple dry years. Reporter which youre expecting . Absolutely. Reporter some people worry about a big project. I hope that theyre thinking about preserving the area as well as turning it into another big water tank. It would have water supply benefits. It would have environmental benefits, both to the creek below, for fish habitat, as well as provide water for refuges in the central valley. Reporter now, the Water District says frankly it expects the state to be skeptical of an 800 million price tag. But Officials Say theyre confident and point out they will get a Second Chance later to respond directly to any specific criticism. Live in morgan hill, robert handa, nbc bay area news. Theres still a lot to catch up here. But we still could have some stronger storms by the end of the month, also into march. Now, not only do we not have any rainfall today, it was record setting heat. It wasnt uncomfortable, it wasnt dangerous, but it was way above where we should be for this time of the year.
