last year was in response to the election of president trump.. but tomorrow -- is a different focus... nbc bay area )s robert handa is in san jose -- with what that focus is - and how organizers hope it will empower women. robert? that )s right.. organizers and supporters are really trying to make sure the marches are more than a one-shot deal.. we )re here at arena green in sn jose where .. as you can see.. workers have set up this stage .. the center of saturday )s women )s march and rally.. where the voices may sound different this time around. 11 bay area activists are wondering why it took a year for charges against them to wondering why it took a year for charges against them to be dropped. they called themselves the "j-2o resisters". here they are during last year s inauguration day, blocking cal train tracks in san francisco. district attorney george gascon is taking criticism for the case. the attorney representing the resisters is blasting the d-a for not dropping the case on day one. she says he drew out the process and wasted government resources, for a case that never made it to trial. tick tock. a scramble is underway right now in washington, to keep the federal government funded, and open for business. the deadline is less than three-hours away. in the senate, majority leader, "mitch mcconnell" has called for a procedural-vote within the hour. democrats have been meeting behind closed doors about the stalemate. and the president canceled his flight to his florida home. however, the timing is awkward. he has scheduled a big fund-raiser tomorrow at mar-a-lago, to celebrate his first year in the white house. our janelle wang is tracking all the developments and will join us with an update in 25 minutes. on edge - that )s what san francisco mayor london breed says undocumented immigrants are feeling. all because of the threat of ice raids. nbc bay area )s christie smith s live at city hall to explain. christie. it )s one year since president trump took office. it )s one year since president trump took office. and there )s been a dramatic shift in the treatment of undocumented immigrants all across the country. our investigative unit looked into the data and found arrests of immigrants living illegally inside the country by ice agents surged by 40% from 2016 to 2017. ice made 143,470 arrests between inauguration and the end of september, according to a report by the department of inauguration and the end of september, according to a report by the department of homeland security. while the number of arrests inside the country has increased, the number of arrests at the border dropped to the lowest in nearly half a century. now to a story you )ll see -- only on nbc bay area: a san jose man says he confronted two teenagers who were breaking into his neighbor )s home. the man didn )t want to identify himself but he sent us these pictures. he says the burglars came after him with a baseball bat near blossom hill road. the teenagers didn )t know that he was armed w/ gun. the man says he held the burglars down until police arrived. one was booked into juvenille hall. the other was cited and released to his mother. new at 6: not what tesla intended for its autopilot feature. chp san francisco tweeted out this photo. they say the driver was passed out behind the wheel -- and explained to officers everything was okay -- he had set his tesla to autopilot. officers say the driver )s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. tesla says their autopilot feature is meant to have conscious drivers, who keep their hands on the steering wheel as a precaution. new at 6: a silicon valley charter school -- might be closing its doors.it would leave parents scrambling to find a place for their kids..nbc bay area )s anoushah rasta is in sunnyvale -- where a key meeting is about to start. anoushah? democrats want a provision to keep the daca program going. it )s on life support, expiring in march, putting nearly 800-thousand undocumented immigrants, who came to the u-s as children, in legal limbo. senate minority leader "chuck schumer" met privately with "president trump" at the white house today ... to try and hammer out a deal. south carolina "i want to keep the government open. i want to fund the military and i want to do right by the daca population." if the shutdown happens, about 850-thousand federal workers will be off the job, including employees of the c-d-c, battling this vicious flu season. passport updates will also be suspended. but active duty troops, the t-s-a and f-b-i would continue working, but none will get paid. but members of congress? they will continue to get paid in a shutdown. most national parks would remain open, but some monuments would close. if congress does pass a spending bill, it )s only for the short term. lawmakers could be back in this position in mid-february. the next hour is crucial -- as we wait for this senate vote. our policital analyst, "larry gerston is w/ us... we )ve had shut-downs before...just a few years ago.. why is this one unprecedented? what do you expect to happen? at this point there are only 2 possibilities. thank you, larry. thank you, larry. our coverage on the government shutdown threat continues online. just go to nbc bay area dot com to find out how the bay area might be impacted if it goes into effect. president trump )s proposed "travel ban" is on its way to the supreme court. the high court agreed today to add the case to its crowded docket, but there won )t be any action soon. the justices will hear arguments in april, and probably won )t issue a final ruling until late june. this is the third version of the controversial ban, which targets people traveling from six muslim-majority nations. opponents claim it violates federal immigration laws and is discriminatory. thousands of demonstrators rallied in washington, in an annual call to outlaw abortion. the demonstration has taken place every year since 1973. but this year, crowds were hopeful that a new president and supreme court justice can turn back the landmark case, known as roe versus wade. president trump, joining the crowd by video link from the white house, telling the crowd, "love saves lives." but some lawmakers, like congresswoman jackie speier - who made the difficult decision for an abortion - insist that women deserve the right to choose. both sides are looking to a supreme court with a new member - justice neil gorsuch - as the fight over abortion rights continues in washington. justice gorsuch has never before ruled on an abortion case. a fitness center in burliangame is in danger of closing. a lot of seniors, worried about the services that will go with it. the center is on property owned by the mills-peninsula health care district. the members we spoke with say it has a lot of benefits. it cuts down on their hospital visits and keeps them healthy. there )s also a nurse on duty, monitoring people who use the equipment. one woman we spoke with is 92 years old, and looks forward to turning 100, thanks to the center. the fitness center was expected to close at the end of february. but a meeting held today is delaying the closure and keeping the gym open until june. the only chance to save it .. is if someone takes it over. the maiden voyage. after the break, tag along with us as we ride bart )s fleet of the future, finally in service. a not guilty plea today from the a not guilty plea today from the woman accused in a crash that left a chp officer seriously hurt. "tammy walker" is accused of driving drunk and w/ a suspended license. investigators say walker drove into the center divide on highway 4 over the weekend -- triggering a chain reaction crash that pinned a chp motorcycle officer under a truck. he broke both his legs, but is recovering well. cleanup is underway after a fire hydrant triggered a mudslide in oakland. our nbc bay area skyranger was above the mess. it all started last night - on marlborough terrace. a car crashed and landed on the hydrant. crews had a hard time shutting off the water. and the rush of water sent a torrent of mud into two homes. it )s a big priority. that )s what cal fire says now about the number of dead trees across the state. in the last eight years, cal fire says 129 million trees have died across the state. the culprits: the drought and bark beetles. and now cal fire is spending six million dollars to clean up the problem. it will cut down and remove dead trees in the counties with biggest problem. cal fire says removing the trees will cut down on the fuel load in the event of a wildfire. the "fleet of the future"-- has hit the tracks. barts new cars are up and running. passengers were allowed to ride the new bart trains for the first time today on the fremont to richmond line. big changes include wider cabins, more bike racks, and new digital monitors that track the train )s progress in multiple languages. the cars are also a lot less noisy. the new trains will run during non-peak hours for now. if there aren )t any major glitches over the next few weeks -- they )ll run the full bart hours. the new trains will slowly replace the old ones over the next 6 years. making special accomodations for kids with autism. a theater on the peninsula has a unique performance this weekend. the "peninsula youth theatre" group will hold a "sensory friendly" performance tomorrow of their show "the ugly duckling." the performance is designed specifically for kids with autism -- who may be sensitive to loud sounds and bright lights. there will also be a quiet area set aside -- in case kids would rather watch the performance on a t-v screen. performances of "the ugly duckling" are this weekend at the mountain view performing arts center. the sensory-friendly performance is at 5 o )clock saturday evening do you have what it takes?
