the low visibility. there's a traffic break i'm going to warn you about on 101 approaching 3rd past 92. i'm tracking that. i'm also tracking this. very dense fog reported before a car hit the center divide and possibly a tree hanging down on the divider there. see there's slowing heading up. there was an earlier traffic break as well. fire crews are blocking the left two lanes to clear everything over to the shoulder. that is unusually slow heading toward 380 and tough visibility. continuing throughout the north bay and the carquinez, bridge. 6:01 now. new this morning, a fire ripped through a south bay apartment complex leaving more than a dozen people without a home. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live on the scene after rancho drive to show us the aftermath. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kris. 16 people, this includes five children that need a place to live. you can see behind me the apartment buildings are either destroyed or damaged so badly, it is uninhabitable. the fire started around 12:30 this morning in san jose. the san jose fire department says this is the kind of fire that really scares them. take a look at the video. when they arrived on the scene, a section of this building was fully engulfed on both floors. firefighters went into rescue mode to make sure everyone got out okay, which they did. >> everything gone. everything. everything gone right now. >> reporter: what are you going to do? >> start again. wait and then we buy everything again. that's all we can do. >> reporter: you are safe? >> yes. >> reporter: the fire department called for a second and eventual third alarm back up to help them. knockdown took about an hour. the fire department doesn't know what caused the fire. it started in a unit behind me on the left side of the building. they are not sure of the cause, but believe it might have started on the balcony or patio. red cross was out here to help with blankets and hotel rooms until they get a permanent place to live. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. to washington, d.c. this morning, a new information for you as the president is denying he used profane language when commenting on immigrants from certain countries. >> a democratic aide says the president used that expletive talking about people from haiti, africa and el salvador. tracie potts is live on capitol hill with the president's response, which she tweeted about 20 minutes ago. the fallout as to weather or not it's enough. >> reporter: exactly, kris. the president is denying that he said what was reported, tweeting that he never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a poor and troubled country. never said take them out. he goes on to talk about a wonderful relationship with haitians and maybe he should record his meetings from this point on. despite the president's denial this morning, the report that he used this derogatory term created a lot of anger here in washington. at a white house meeting on immigration, a democratic aide says president trump used this language, expletive country, asking why the u.s. should admit people from haiti, africa and el salvador instead of places like norway. >> can you think of any employee walking into any institution in america and saying these kind of deplorable things and not being fired? >> reporter: maya love insisting the president apologize. >> what do you have to do, spray paint the "n" word in the oval office to be a racist? >> reflects not just a particular attitude of the president, but reflects an attitude that is a growing one among a significant number of white americans with a concern about the brown of this country. >> reporter: it comes amid negotiations to protect 800,000 immigrants losing status in march. >> we are so close. i hope this doesn't get us off track. >> reporter: the president's tweets criticizing a surveillance program as lawmakers were about to renew it. >> the president is supporting the bill. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: there trump tweeted a correction and blames the media. clarifying surveillance with immigration up in the air. now, lawmakers said they were close to a deal. this morning, the president tweeting he called that deal outlandish and didn't include enough money for his wall. back to you. >> thank you. search teams will continue their efforts to find more victims of the deadly montecito mudslide. the hopes of finding anyone alive are growing more slim. authorities say 17 people are confirmed dead. the number missing is at 43. it's gone up and down wildly with authorities believing the final number of dead will not be near that number. meanwhile, the number of homes destroyed was lowered to 64, but the number of homes damaged is up to 446. a final plan to identify places most at risk of wildfires has been put on hold. that's the word from the press democrat. the utilities commission already had the map put together. it was due sunday. the regulators want more feedback. now, they have until july. it will help electric companies identify high-risk companies. they will have higher standards maintaining equipment. lawsuits alleged neglected power equipment ignited the wildfires. keeping mayor ed lee's alive. this was the first meeting about that park since lee passed away from a heart attack. acting mayor announced plans to begin the process of renaming the park in lee's honor. a lot of folks in the community support the idea. >> this is exactly how our park should be used by the people who live in these communities. they depend on this place. this is their social, this is their living room. this is like coming together. >> portsmouth square is often called chinatown's living room. mayor lee held a lot of events there. if it goes forward, the recreation and parks department has to approve the name change. looking for something to do this weekend? how about a trip to certain state park that will cost you a lot less? >> an environmental group is financing vehicle admission to 40 redwood state parks. it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the save the redwoods. it starts saturday and will happen every second saturday of the month all yearlong. there you gou, kari. >> thank you for that tip. it's going to be a great weekend here. i want to show you what's making headlines across the national map here. a big, arctic storm is rolling through parts of the midwest. those temperatures are going from 70 to the teens and it's also creating a lot of ice. that's going to be one of those things you file under it's great to live in california. look at the highs today, reaching the mid-60s. after the fog we are seeing this morning clears up. we'll be up to 66 degrees in san jose and 60 degrees today in san francisco. mike, you are still tracking two problems on the peninsula. >> that's right. unexpectedly and unusually slow right now considering the friday commute is light. now, very dense fog reported over the time, the last half hour, i should say coming through san mateo and northbound 101. a couple traffic breaks. all lanes reported clear, north 101 at 3rd. it jammed up 101 and 92 and meet in san mateo. early slowing here. it's going to clear up because of the lighter volume of traffic. northbound 280 approaching as we have slowing because folks are from black mountain and slow because we had traffic breaks. the sensors turned from orange to green. they may have cleared all lanes heading from 380. really dense fog throughout the north bay, that registers orange and amber color. san rafael, 101, barely visible from the cameras. be careful and make sure you do a lot of stopping. back to you. >> we get that fog and you have to roll down the window to hear to see. >> oh. coming up next on "today in the bay," terrifying near miss. find out what fell out of an airplane. you can see it on the hood. what it is and what happened to it. what's being done to make sure it doesn't happen anywhere, including here. today is payday for a lot of people. double check your paycheck. i'll tell you why when "today in the bay" continues. 6:14 on this friday morning. fog is rolling in the bay area. it's mostly clear with a look at the visibility in san jose. santa teresa, mid-50s throughout the morning and mostly sunny skies. look at how nice it is going to be, mid-60s today and warmer for the weekend and more sunshine. there's rain in that forecast. we'll talk about that coming up at 6:19. from oakland, i had to widen out the shot. tough visibility for the roadways, but you can see that the driving is fine as far as it has spacing. let's track the impact of the fog, the biggest impact of the commute. new this morning, we are learning of a near disaster in southern california. that thing on the top of the hood of the car is a fuel cap from an airplane that fell off and nearly hit that driver. it happened in new port beach in december. the united airlines plane just took off from john wayne airport, the airport you fly into when grow to disneyland. that fuel cap fell from the sky. the driver says it sliced the hood of the car. he is lucky it didn't go in the windshield. for the second time in two days, faa is talking about a miscommunication at sfo that could have been far worse. the latest case was the go around involving a delta airplane coming in too close to a departing plane. they said this was routine and the passengers were never in danger. here is sfo in animation stouing the delta flight as it attempted to land wednesday night while a jetblue flight took off on a perpendicular runway. the planes were close. passengers said they felt something unusual. >> the flight pulled up really fast, you know, with all the engines working. i said, oh, what is happening here? >> this is at least the fourth recent incident at sfo. last july, an air canada plane almost landed on a taxiway where planes were sitting. they repeatedly ignored a go around and landing the plane anyway. tuesday, aeromexico airplane almost landed on the wrong runway, then performed a go around. it's friday. a lot of people will get paid today. >> you might notice that change in that paycheck. if not today, very soon. >> very soon. hr departments all over the united states have gotten that new tax bracket information showing them how much tax to with hold from you in 2018. this comes, of course, after that huge tax law passed before christmas. it's in effect already, but up to now, employers were not sure how much money to with hold. expect to see that over the next few weeks. facebook is changing, too. more information from your friends, less information from news agencies like ours, more personal. in a facebook posting, zuckerberg said posts from businesses, brands and media are crowding out the personal moment. he warned investors with less to read and fewer videos to watch, people may spend less time on facebook. expect facebook shares to suffer on that warning. san francisco banks wells fargo report today. the dow as nasdaq open at records today. david letterman opened a new show on netflix. now, he did introduce the first guest. >> good to see ya. >> good to see you. >> how are you? because it's going to be so nice. the weather is going to be beautiful around the bay area. we brag to friends and family living elsewhere. temperatures this morning are on the cool side. here is a look at the problem affecting the commute. everyone is getting out the door in dublin. we have patchy, dense fog. visibility has been dropping to a half mile. that's what we are seeing in concord and livermore. napa, visibility at .75 mile. you can't see that far ahead of your headlights. you need to give extra spacing and also make sure you slow down. if you are sticking to those new year's resolutions, doing well and going out for a jog today, let me give you the temperature trend in san jose. still cloudy throughout much of the morning. we will have some clearing and the temperatures making it into the low 60s by 1:00. here is a look at the high temperature, up to 66 degrees today. once again, it is going to be beautiful out there. 65 in concord and santa rosa, expect a high of 65 degrees. a dry weekend ahead as the temperatures warm up. there will be an approaching storm system by tuesday, early in the morning and that means it does stay dry for the martin luther king holiday festivities around the bay area. we will have rain moving in on tuesday. dry on wednesday, then another stronger storm system set to move in on thursday into friday. as we get an early look at how much rain we could see because it's been so dry here, here is a look at one of the computer model runs from santa rosa where we could get up to two inches of rain and most of us getting a half to 1.75 inch of rain once the systems move through. i'll keep you up to date on it. in the near term, it is going to be a beautiful weekend, highs low to mid-60s in san francisco and 70 for the inland valleys. that rain moves in late monday into tuesday. as of now, looks like wednesday is dry. thursday, a soaker. fog is the biggest factor for your commute. >> that's right, kari. the friday commute has a lighter volume of traffic. we can see that here. we can also see a glow of the lights all around the university area. low clouds definitely drifting through as we look at the map. it doesn't show in this area, but farther north, dense fog reported. there was an earlier crash and slowing. here, 101 and 92 where they converge, an earlier crash and traffic break cleared from the roadway. it is being fed by the san mateo bridge. that is one of the areas we see the early commute and a fender bender to the north just reported, 880 off 238. i'll track that. no major blockage there from what i understand. the bay bridge metering lights are on. the highlighting shows how dense the fog is for the north bay. no delays on the upper east shore. 21 minutes from highway 4. back to you. >> thank popping up showing teenagers putting laundry pods into their mouths and calling it the tide pod challenge. it's such a problem, procter & gamble, which owns tide said our pods are highly concentrated detergent meant to clean clothes and used safely in millions of households and should be used to clean clothes and kept up and away with from children. they should not be played with, whatever the circumstances, even if it's a joke. the pods can cause serious harm, especially to young kids. i can't believe we have to tell the teenagers not to do it. >> do not use those. no. >> find another challenge. do push ups. 6:26 right now. nbc bay area responds to a san jose man who says pg&e owed him $5,000, but it wouldn't fully pay up. k that is a lot. he asked chris chmura and the team for help. >> vince says pg&e wanted to remove trees from his property. he said okay. but, vince says when the power company sent out a crew to remove the trees, they broke his electric gate. he got an estimate to fix the gate. it was, brace yourself, $5300. he says pg&e went ahead and offered to pay part of it, yeah, $4100. still, there's a $1200 gap there. vince turned to us for help with the leftover money. we contacted pg&e and they reimbursed him the full $5300. in a statement, the power company said, we apologize for the inconvenience this caused. utility work like this is common. when just kidding. here is the fog right now as we take a live look outside from at&t park. i know it's hard to tell where we are here. we are looking at the embarcadero. we are seeing that dense fog across the tri-valley and the north bay. we are seeing visibility down to three miles in san jose. it is fairly clear. as you get the kids out the door, low 50s and cloudy through much of the morning. it takes a while for the fog to lift and clear. look at this afternoon. by 1:00, 60 degrees with sunshine. it's going to be a beautiful day. we'll talk just about your weekend coming up in seven minutes. mike is tracking that fog and the commute. a foggy friday commute means lighter volume, but issues to deal with. the metering lights are on. fast track is moving. it's not visible. that's the east shore freeway and will be a problem. you will see how dense the fog is registering. vallejo, bay bridge, over here to the walnut creek interchange, all the areas where the commute is building in concord and walnut creek. we have a crash reported, major damage, but minor injuries north 238 at 880. we see speeds recover, so they may have cleared lanes. that denser fog is over here for the tri-valley. the south bay and peninsula are seeing patches of fog. so far, a light commute. back to you. >> thank you, mike. happening right now, parents of students in the east bay are being told to be on the lookout for a man approaching students. >> pete suratos is live in walnut creek to explain what happened and why the school district is issuing this warning. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and kris. both of these incidents happening not far from where we are standing at walnut creek. they are saying they are connected and trying to get the information out to get the public's help. the incidents happened two days apart. the first happening monday in homestead at about 4:00 p.m. they are saying an adult male approached a group of students in the area. it's unclear what was said to them. the students reported it to the school and the district reported to police. then, two days later, on wednesday, a mile north from that location, at a 7-eleven, an adult male tried to engage a male student in conversation at 4:00 p.m. he showed the student, this is according to the police, showed that student a sexually explicit text message on the phone. he made a smart decision and waited until that man left and reported it to walnut creek police. here is a description we are getting from the police on the most recent incident. he is described as a white male in his 20s, six feet tall, a shiny bald head and the suspect, at the time, was wearing a neon green cast on his arm. the police will increase their presence around the school. if you have information morning where we are now entering day four for the search for victims in the deadly mudslides in montecito. 17 people are confirmed dead and 43 people missing. >> this morning, we are getting a better look at the devastation left behind. "today" show's miguel almaguer is in montecito with the clean up ahead. >> reporter: good morning. they are calling this is search and rescue mission. in neighborhoods like this one, it looks like a recovery. massive amounts of mud and boulders rolled down the hill here. they are literally covering home after home up to their rooftops. we know 43 people are reported missing, another 17 are dead. coming up on the "today" show, we'll take you up in the air to give you and aerial perspective. authorities say when they first got to neighborhoods like this one, the mud was six feet deep. authorities say they are looking for survivors today. back to you guys. new this morning, changes could be coming to who gets to see police body camera video in san francisco. right now, officers involved in deadly shootings can watch video from any officer on scene before talking with investigators. the examiner reports the police chief wants to change that policy. officers would only be able to look at their own body camera video before talking to investigators. that proposal is still under review. a pacifica man hansen tensed to 30 years in prison. his name is joseph paul courtney. thursday, he pleaded to no contest to drug people. he had accomplices. this happened over an eight year period and he was hiv positive during the time. he will have to serve 80% of the sentence. happening today, a rocket launch is scheduled for the air force base. the launch was scrubbed over the past couple of days. when ever the rocket takes off, it will carry a national security payload. today's launch is set for this afternoon. we'll let you know how it turns out. happening tomorrow, get ready to see some spectacular basketball shots with a healthy dose of sweet georgia brown, the song you hear when the globetrotters play. tomorrow, they cake over oracle arena with two games. one at 2:00 and one at 7:00. sunday afternoon, they move to san jose's s.a.p. center. more games are scheduled for the bay area next weekend. >> kari didn't have plans for the weekend yet. now you do. these folks have plans as well. proud parents. they had five babies overnight. doctors, last night, safely delivered their quintuplets at a hospital in walnut creek. look at them before the delivery, looking prorly mobabl calm than this morning. they delivered three boys and two girls at 27 weeks. they are around 2.5 pounds, very small. the good news is all the babies are stable. they also have two daughters. those little girls will be helping a lot. they found out last year, there would be five more on the way. what a blessing for that family and hopefully all of their community will rally around them because five is a lot of babies. >> to have all at once. laura garcia had three, but five. >> if you work in child care, you have to keep it to that limit. i don't think you can have more than that. mike? >> you know, i can barely manage two. we talked about that. we had one at a time. my gosh, five at once plus two. hope they get a minivan. here, the vans, suvs, everything moving well because of the lighter volume of traffic. denser fog at the bay. where you see the orange is the thickest on the road weather index. also showing southbound 280 at the top of the screen, the arrow is just starting to recover with a crash on the northbound side. traffic break, activity on the southbound side for debris as well. that should be clearing up. the rest of the bay moves well. a crash reported in san rafael. i don't see slowing, but i barely see. >> there might be slowing in there somewhere. >> hopefully as we cook into the weekend it's not that foggy. >> yes. we can go through the fog, it's going to be a bright and sunny weekend. we start with the temperatures reaching the low 60s for the coast. the bay will be at 65 degrees and inland areas, 67. it's going to be beautiful and nice and comfortable, too, on sunday. warmer, up to 70 degrees. you can't beat that in the middle of january. how about heading to napa valley this weekend. it will stay in the mid-60s, mostly sunny skies and fog during the morning hours. also in carmel valley, look at how warm it is going to be, 75 degrees on sunday. it's also going to be a warm one for santa cruz, near 70 degrees, mostly sunny skies. saturday looks like the warmest day, up to 69 degrees there. as the sunrises over squaw valley, it is clear. you shouldn't have issues getting there and back. it will be a dry weekend, temperatures reaching 40s and mid-50s by sunday. the snow is in here for next week. muir woods, it's going to be a great weekend for hiking, staying on top of new year's resolutions. fog today and upper 50s for the highs. mostly sunny skies. clouds sunday with a high of 61 degrees. muir woods even better when it's free. that will be monday for the holiday. let me know what you are doing this weekend. let me know what's going on. i'll let you know what is going on with our temperature trend for today, coming up in three minutes. >> thanks, kari. coming up next on "today in the bay," new this morning, former skater, tanya harding speaks out and what she had to say about the attack of nancy kerrigan. the damage left behind this morning and the impact on people's lives. the president this morning denying he said those shocking words about africa and haiti and el salvador. we'll bring you the latest. taking a look at the stock market, the dow is up 99 points. it opened at record highs. the time now, 6:41. you are watching "today in the bay." happy friday. we have dense fog elsewhere. still clear visibility. as we go to willow glen for a temperature trend, clouds and 53 degrees at 8:00. low 50s. once the sun breaks out, a beautiful afternoon with highs in the mid-60s. we'll talk about the weekend and when the next round of rain arrives in five minutes. over here, the slowdown westbound 80 on the right side. this is the san mateo bridge. visibility is okay. a crash somewhere in the westbound direction. i'm watching this shot carefully, coming up. looking live in san jose, more than a dozen people are finding a new place to stay. that fire exploded after midnight at an apartment complex off capital expressway. 16 people, including five kids have to find a new place to live. their apartment was destroyed or badly damaged. they consider the unit uninhabitable. no word on the cause. a bombshell admission in a story that is older than some of you, our viewers, but lives on. tanya harding admitted she knew about the plan to attack her figure skating rival, nancy kerrigan. her ex-husband, jeff, and his friend shawn, were convicted in that attack. it happened shortly after the u.s. figure skating championship and ahead of a 1994 winter olympics. kerrigan injured her knee, but managed to skate in the olympics alongside harding. in an interview last night on abc, harding talked about the incident. until now, she denied knowing about it ahead of time. >> you were never part of the planning? >> no. i did, however, overhear them talking about stuff where, maybe we should take somebody out to make sure she gets on the team. i remember telling them, i go what the hell are you talking about? >> harding was eventually convicted for obstructing justice, but never served time. the surf contest could be a go. they are deciding if the waves are good enough near half-moon bay. they are eyeing the martin luther king holiday as the day to kick off the event, that's monday. a decision could come as early as today. as we have been reporting on nbc bay area, the surf league purchased the right after previous organizers declared bankruptcy. happening today, a tribute set for a south bay athlete who collapsed and died. she was a rising star on the jv team in cupertino. there will be a memorial set up, a moment of silence, then celebration. if you are going, they ask you wear golden state warrior gear because she was a huge warriors fan. students are going to deck raid the gym with blue and yellow streamers. president trump is scheduled to have a physical exam. it will be his first since taking office. the white house says the doctor will release a brief statement after the exam. officials say there will be a news conference where the doctor will report. president trump says he did not make crude remarks about immigrants. >> he denied it twice. >> twice before sunrise z. i have no doubt you have heard about this. people in a white house meeting about immigration say the president called certain countries a terrible word. he claims he did not. here is the second denial that just came across twitter. never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a very poor and troubled country. never said take them out. made up by democrats. i have a wonderful relationship with haitians. probably should record future meetings. i'm not going to repeat what the president allegedly said about haiti and africa. t"the washington post" uses the full word in its articles, msnbc said it on air, so, too, did nbc "nightly news." >> our report includes that expletive once, so you can hear the complete coat yourself. it may not be appropriate for younger viewers. >> the president reportedly said he did not want people from haiti or africa coming to america, he wanted people from places like norway. we'll leave you with a high note of what another president said about immigrants from haiti and africa. >> can we doubt that only a divine providence placed this land, this island of freedom here, as a refuge, for all those people in the world who yearn to breathe free?
