[ applause ] >> thank you. that's so sweet. i'm not going to sing. oh, that's so sweet. thank you. thank you. so backstage i heard they said something about my -- i was the only woman to get, did i hear it right, yes, the only woman to get the best director award. and, you know, that was 1984? that was 34 years ago? folks, time's up. we need more women directors and more women to be nominated for best director. there are so many films out there that are so good directed by women. anyway, i'm very proud to stand in a room with people who speak out against gender inequality, sexual harassment, and the pettiness that has poisoned our politics. and i'm proud that our industry faced with uncomfortable truths has vowed to change the way we do business. truth is powerful, and in a really good film, we recognized the truth about ourselves, about others, and it's so powerful that it can even change people's minds, touch people's hearts, and ultimately even change society, itself. this evening we've seen highlights from five really good films nominated for best motion picture drama. and once again, here are the nominees. >> announcer: "call me by your name." association, who choose up to five nominees in each category. on the final ballot, the same members vote for one nominee in each category. information concerning the final results is known only to the a powerful winter storm. rain, wind, and flooding, likely travel delays as well. the rain begins as we speak. might be the strongest storm we have seen in almost a year. the news at 11:00 starts right now. i i am raj mathai. >> and i will jessica aguirre. the rain is coming and it has already started in the city. >> we know how this goes. it is not just the rain and wind, it is the damage it will leave behind. sergio quintana is in the fire zone and rob mayeda. >> the burn zones, flash flood watches will be in effect. and for most of the bay area, a wind advisory with gusts of 45 to 65 miles per hour in some of the hills. unlike previous storms we will see periods of heavy rains. gusty winds, power issues and tree damage increasingly likely. there is that added chance of isolated thunder. the first outer fringe of it now bringing light rain into the north bay. pretty surprising rain totals that can be expected coming up in our full forecast. >> thank you. this incoming storm is expected to be the most powerful to hit since the north bay fire storm which is causing concerns. sergio quintana is in santa rosa. >> reporter: you come across these, they are called waddles. they are supposed to soak up some material that potentially washes into the streams. with the coming storm, the miles and miles of waddles are going to be put to the test. dozens of destroyed homes like these in the fountain grove neighborhoods are being cleared up. lots of work ahead of the storm. >> the big concern now versus a month or so ago when we received our first rain, perhaps the intensity of the storm is going to be more significant. >> on highway 12, you can see the miles of waddles set up to keep streams and rivers from toxic debris. and erosion is a major concern. >> doing the same thing we have been doing with more sense of you a urgency because of the rain. he is. >> reporter: a concern for flashed floods in certain areas. public work craws are installed these signs >> the environment up there has changed. severely damaged. >> reporter: in talking to some residents, they are looking forward to the rain. the region needs it. they are just hoping not too much will cause setting up 200 additional beds for people at seven different shelters. and community leaders in san jose handed out blankets, sleeping banks to about 300 people. a long line of people who needed help. this is at saint james park in downtown san jose. this storm should help the sparse sierra snow pack. winter storm warning will be in effect in just a matter of hours from now. the most snow expected to fall in yosemite. on our app, you can access our radar. it is already being called one of the most dramatic political statements in award season history. a sea of black in the golden globes in honor of the me too campaign. >> reporter: instead of asking actresses about which designer they were wearing, they were asked why are you wearing black and that opened the door for them talking about sexual harassment in the work place. a visible blackout in the red carpet. showing solidarity by wearing back. >> harvey weinstein isn't here tonight because i have heard rumors that he is crazy and difficult to work with. don't worry, he will be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during in the memorrium. >> people out there who are feeling silenced by harassment and discrimination and abuse, time is up. we hear you and we will tell your stories. >> reporter: meryl streep chose to walk the red carpet with the director of the national domestic workers alliance. -- she is encouraged by the solidarity she saw. >> women all over the country are fed up. >> reporter: oprah winfrey. >> for too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. but their time is up. >> reporter: and it appears tonight's ceremony prompted a show of support. the times up legal defense fund is now at nearly $16 million. those donations, many of them came in tochblt reporting live in san jose. m >> that movement includes that legal defense fund that she was talking about to help the victims of sexual abuse. more coming up right here at 12:00. donations continuing to pour in from across the country. one woman who accused moore. katie jacob stanton leaped into action. she wanted to wanted to raise a few thousand dollars to help. the campaign trended immediately. following developing news in the east bay. police are searching for the people involved in a double shooting. >> a rare violent crime in the city of fremont. this is near north gate park. thom jensen is in the neighborhood. >> reporter: burglars were trying to break into this pickup truck. folks say they can't remember any violent crimes here let alone a double shooting. >> two shots and this gentleman, i heard the noise like stop, stop. >> reporter: this man does not want to give his name fearing the shooters will return. other neighbors say they saw the suspects running from the screen at about 2:45 this morning. leaving their get away vehicle, this white pickup truck behind. a spokesperson for the police department described the suspects as two hispanic men and tw hispanic women. at least one of the suspects opened fire. two canine teams tried to sniff out the suspects but lost their trail. >> i have been scared. we didn't sleep. >> reporter: another truck was burglarized within minutes two blocks away. fremont pd tells us they want to hear from anybody who saw or heard anything especially if they have more video. in fremont, thom jensen nbc bay area news. fire that roared through the hangar at petaluma airport. no word on what caused this blaze. and right now, we are looking at light rain falling in san rafael which we can find on the radar view. the first wave before heavy rain and gusty wind arrive as we go into your monday. could it get any worse on the east coast? first blasted by snow. water everywhere. the story about this mess at jfk airport. b.a.r.t. to the airport, a passenger loses one of his favorite gadgets. >> they paid 100% of insurance peop premium, but fire benefits saying they are getting less than 100% benefits. next. . a potential dangerous situation in the sky above richmond tonight. video from a chp helicopter. shows someone flashing a green laser right at the helicopter. second time in less than a month that a chp chopper has been targeted by a laser in the east bay. those lasers can be blinding to pilots. a warning for homeowners everywhere. this whole thing can cost thousands of dollars and take years to settle. so she turned to us. you spoke to a lot of people. this could be common here. >> this particular woman calls this requirement cruel. i want to show you the battle she is fighting. how the state is trying to halt it and what you can do tonight to protect yourself using a smartphone. >> it was a bay window. >> reporter: when the overnight fire storm raged in santa rosa nothing survived. >> nothing. it is all gone. >> reporter: holly web was stunned when state farm told her getting the full amount listed for the content of her home required a complete inventory. >> every cup and saucer, every spoon and fork and everything you had in your life. >> reporter: and her husband lost everything. >> this is what i have, a pile of ash. >> reporter: state farm declined to discuss specifics of her case. you can't count on getting the full amount listed in your policy, they do not represent automatic payment. holly is bracing herself for thousands listed. what is the point of the contents list anyway? nationwide told us they were unable to find anyone adequately able to answer our questions. insurance trade group says it stops fraud. >> people try to cheat insurance companies but not in a disaster. >> reporter: a san francisco nonprofit that helps people with insurance. >> they know that people are going to leave a lot of money on the table. >> reporter: only one insurance company safeco told us they are paying fire victims 100% without a written inventory. others say the amount reduced as much at 75%. she says state farm is giving her two years when all she wants is to move on today. >> it is not just me. it is my neighbors. >> reporter: she is right, and we checked with the california department of insurance. hundreds of people have complained. >> it is overwhelming and we understand this. >> reporter: california insurance commissioners just issued this notice. their deadline is tomorrow. >> and i am confident they could all wave it particularly in holly's situation where the home is a total loss. there is nothing left. >> reporter: jones doesn't have the authority to require 100%. but he claims to publicly post the names of the companies that will. >> that was the master bedroom. >> reporter: holly wants insurance agents to start disclosing how it works. telling customers they might have to do a full inventory after the disaster before getting paid. do you think you should have been told up front? >> yeah. and here is how you do it. if you were a good neighbor, you would pay me what you owe me that i paid for all these years. >> reporter: you can do a home inventory before disaster strikes. it is simple. take a tour of your home with your smartphone. shoot video. comb through closets. there major cancellation and delays. crews have been working to clear water from the floor inside. a water main break froze when the temperature plunged. >> what a mess, right? >> can't get a break in new york. >> rough on the east coast. we are about to get a share of our own winter weather. windy and wet storms coming back to the bay area. good cycle of 24 hours of gusty wind and heavy rain. outside a preview before the main event. san rafael wet roadways. the clouds and the rains are going to keep our temperatures up. some light rain showers close to san francisco and starting to see wet roads near san jose close to 54 degrees. we are seeing right now areas of green. no orange or red like we will likely find tomorrow. towards the east bay, san francisco. some of this will be arriving for the morning commute. so periods of moderate rain at times. the first wave here and this will be the kicker right there, coming on in. winds will increase ahead of that. that will pack the one, two punch for the bay area. weather alert for high rain totals. 40s and 50s highs tomorrow. you will notice for the morning breezy conditions but the main event for the wind mid afternoon to the evening. half moon bay 41 miles per hour. gusts 45 to 50. wind speeds calm on down tuesday. pockets of moderate rain, perhaps more focus now across portions of the south bay. we will see this through lunchtime and briefly before th second wave comes on. early afternoon to 4:00, we may see it let up a little bit. the wind picks up at this time and 7:00, 8:00, heavy rain comes on through. isolated thunder. powering up heavy rain shower. san jose to morgan hill until about 11:00. and main line moves off to the east. watch this on the future cast. there is that area of low pressure passing by to the south and progressively dryer conditions. morning commute for the bay area. quarter inch to half inch of rain. bigger impact for the evening commute. santa cruz mountains 3/4s of rain. watching out for those fire zones could see two to 3 inches of rain. the biggest focus of this storm, central to southern california. for the sierras, highest snow totals. but what is really interesting about this pattern is it comes in fast and furious at times. the rest of the week we get time to dry out but progressively windy and wetter during the day. >> 48 hours we need to be prepared for this. >> absolutely. >> thanks rob. >> "fire and fury," fallout. after controversy comments. here they go to south korea, two bay area skaters are headed to the olympics. an about face from steve bannon now expressing regrets about the statements he made in the controversial new book "fire and fury." here is terry mcsweeney. >> reporter: president trump on twitter slamming the book and what he calls his totally discredited author. the author saying if he left anything out, it was probably more damning. bannon now expressing regret for comments made including about the president's son. far cry from what bannon told author michael wolff describing a meeting. and the prosecutors were going to crack don junior like an egg. >> it reads like an angry person spouting off. >> reporter: wolff on "meet the press," standing by what he wrote. >> it is an extraordinary moment in time. >> reporter: president trump fought back today tweeting i have had to put up with the fake news since the first day i announced running for president, now i have to put up with a fake book. >> statements like the one mr. wolff made about how we all think about the president is ridiculous. they are beneath the conversation. >> reporter: the cia also says the president is fully engaged and understands complex conditions. >> it is already at the top of the best seller list. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. thank you. six people are dead after a wrong way crash. highway patrol says the wrong way driver crashed head on to another car with five people in the car. both cars fully engulfed in flames. all six people died at the scene. four people taken to the hospital after a major crash in san ramon. a silver suv was traveling at a high rate of speed. the driver slammed into another car that was making a left turn. the three women that were in that suv were taken to the hospital by ambulance. the victim's names nor extent of injuries have not been released. new video of a spacex rocket carrying a secret pay load into orbit. the rocket launched this evening. it was carrying the zuma spacecraft for the u.s. government. this is the first spacex launch of the year. last year it launched 18 times. okay. it is everything we love about the olympics. amazing performances mixed with a lot of drama. >> an amazing run in san jose. the u.s. figure skating championships wrapped up today. think fremont and think palo alto. >> reporter: san jose has hosted the national championships twice before. bay area skating fans retreated to tremendous performances. but there was a lot of terrorco as to how the team was selected. good news for the first time in years two skaters from the bay area selected. >> mr. vincent joe. >> reporter: what he does know is that it is all worth it. >> my life has been defined in the last 24 hours. that's how i see it. >> reporter: joe entered last night's free skate competition in the fifth. he skated well but was going to need help from the skaters after him when he was going to finish in the top. he saw his dream melting right there on the center ice. >> after that, i was i am not going to be on the stadium. >> reporter: the next two skaters fell. when all was said and done, the bronze was his. he wouldn't know it earned him a spot on the team for another four hours. the good news coming in a text delivered at 12:30 a.m. >> i can't count the number of times that i stood in my starting post. close mind for a second and imagined it is the olympic arena. >> reporter: someone who knows exactly the feeling is karen chen. she overcame a flu like illness to earn the bronze as well. chen too must now put a roller coaster of a week behind her and get used to life with a brand new first name. olympian. >> that is something that i have dreamed of. i have earned it. and that it self is amazing. >> reporter: back to the men for a moment. if chen and joe were on the team that got the third spot, the selection committee chose the fourth place finisher
