The double amputee olympic sprinter convicted of killing his girlfriend in 2013 overnight south Africas Supreme Court court of appeal more than doubled his prison sentence. But this morning it took just minutes for a judge to more than double the jail sentence for oscar pistorius. This was a shock. Pistorius wasnt even in court to hear the judge say that up until now hes been treated with shocking leniency. The verdict was unanimous and unexpected. South Africas Supreme Court calling pistorius original jail sentence inappropriate and raising it. The respondent is sentenced to impresident ment for a period of 15 years and 5 months. Reporter pistorius who turned 31 on wednesday wasnt even in court to hear the judge say the previous sentence of six years was shockingly lenient. Pistorius, he said, doesnt demonstrate any genuine remorse and has failed to explain why he fired the fatal shots. Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked door at his home. Her parents watched the verdict at home on tv. Afterwards, they told nbc news, their trust in the Justice System has been confirmed. Reeva, they said, can now rest in peace. But there will never be complete closure. They still love her and miss her every day. Pistorius always claimed he shot his girlfriend on valentines day because he thought she was an intruder. He was convicted of manslaughter and later even allowed home to serve his sentence. That was changed to a murder conviction. And pistorius has now got the minimum sentence for murder. Well, many in south africa say a poor black defendant would have gotten this sentence from the very beginning, that only pistorius fame and background protected him. His brother carl just posted on twitter saying, shattered, heart broken, gutted. Well, pistorius himself may now be moved to a high security jail to serve the rest of his sentence. This new development is seen as potential turning point and it involves a former close adviser who had access to government secrets for a brief time inside the white house. As the president and first lady paid a holiday visit to coast guardsmen stationed in florida, mr. Trump quipped about the unpredictable nature of allies. Even if theyre allies, you never know about an ally. An ally can turn. You understand. Youre going to find that out. Reporter there is new drama surrounding his one time ally, former National Security adviser Michael Flynn. He is under scrutiny in Robert Muellers probe into Russian Election interference. As reported by the new york times, according to four people involved in the case, flynns lawyer notified the president s legal Team Wednesday night that the retired generals defense team would no longer share information, which had been their common practice. Severing regular communication is a noteworthy shift. President trumps outside lawyer said it is not entirely unexpected that flynn may be discussing a plea with the special counsel. He emphasized that no one should draw the conclusion that this means anything about general flynn cooperating against the president. Flynns lawyer declined comment. Earlier this month, nbc news reported that federal investigators gathered enough evidence to bring charges against flynn who is under scrutiny for his foreign lobbying work involving russia and turkey. Muellers team is also looking at flynns son, michael, who worked in his fathers consulting business. Thursday, the younger flynn tweeted, he is thankful for having a strong family. These days the president rarely speaks of flynn, who served as a top Campaign Adviser and worked in the administration for just 24 days. Hes in my opinion, a very good person. Reporter and two other figures in the Russian Investigation got a bit of a holiday break, a federal judge permitted former Campaign OfficialsPaul Manafort and rick gates to leave home confinement for the thanksgiving holiday. Both were indicted last month and both pleaded not guilty. Also this morning, the president is tweeting he plans to speak with the president of turkey today. Craig . Potentially how big of a deal is this, what might general flynn be able to tell the special counsel . It is very significant, craig. I think it indicates that there is serious legal jeopardy for the president of the United States. The underlying issue that bob mueller is investigating is did the russia interfere with the u. S. Election with the cooperation of the trump campaign, and if so, why . One of the questions is were was the Trump Administration suggesting that they might eliminate sanctions in order in return for help from the russians and Michael Flynn lost his job over lying about his conversation with the russian ambassador. So this gets to the very core of what the case that bob mueller is pursuing is. There are peripheral things to that. Paul manafort, the campaign chairman, was indicted for conspiracy and issues related to mond money laundering. But the underlying purpose is to go through the russia connection and mike flynn if youre the National Security adviser to the pre president of the United States, you dont get much higher than that. The official line from President Trumps legal team is that this is not a surprise and doesnt necessarily mean anything larger. But if you talk to other members of his inner circle, there is some concern. So how much concern is there within the west wing right now . I think there is a lot of concern. Despite the statements from jay sekulow and others, we have seen reports that President Trump has been comforted by optimistic readings from the attorneys about how this investigation is going. I suspect theyre going to change their tune after this, because prosecutors do not give do not accept cooperation from defendants unless they think theyre going to get something significant. And so the idea that Michael Flynn is either now actively cooperating or negotiating to cooperate indicates that hes told them that there is something significant that he can help them with, and they look for people higher up the chain. There is only one person higher up the chain than the National Security adviser, thats the president. As you know, when the president , when republicans get back, they want to get tax reform passed before christmas. It is a very tight deadline. To what extent does this overshadow the president s agenda in that effort . Well, it is going to cast a cloud over that issue, but i do think that republicans have their own reasons to try to push forward on tax reform. Dont know if they can get the votes to do it. It is a very controversial, not very popular bill if you look at public opinion. But if republicans believe that their own survival depends on passing this bill, i think they would be able to set aside Donald Trumps problems although it does darken the landscape. Franken describes himself as a warm person and says that in some encounters he crossed a line for some women. He says he feels terribly that hes made some women feel badly. The minnesota democrat says hes committed to regaining the trust of the people of his state. The stunning outpouring of support comes after bobit helped 27yearold kate mcclure, who was stranded alongside a hide way outside philadelphia when she ran out of gas. After calling her boyfriend, she noticed a stranger approaching. It was bobit, homeless with just 20 bucks in his pocket. He told her to wait in her car, and with the last of his money, he bought her a can of gasoline. A marine corvette rps veteran a paramedic, he wanted eto be a flight nurse. Recently hes fallen on hard times. The philadelphia enquirer quoted a friend of his who said the North Carolina natives life took an unfortunate turn because of drugs and money problems, but that friend says bobit has a good heart. Now, one mans act of kindness is has unleashed a tidal wave of goodwill. Mcclure and her boyfriend created the go fund me page to help him setting a 10,000 goal and exceeded that in a faw daew. More than 130,000 and counting. But after the donations surged into the hundreds of thousands, the page was taken down for a short time because bobit said he didnt want to seem like he was taking advantage. You did all that . That is awesome. But, people still want to donate. And now the page is back up. One mans simple act of kindness inspiring others to find the true spirit of giving this Holiday Season. So the reason that the page went down is that bobit thought instead of donating to his campaign that people should search for another worthy cause that hasnt gotten the attention that it deserves. As for how much hes earned now, i think we can pull up the page there, just north of 290,000. Unbelievable. What is amazing is how humble he is about it. He clearly has such a good heart.
