participating in a photo op, and joining hands with philippine president rodrigo duterte and other world leaders for the summit's traditional cross-body shake. the president has just finished up a highly anticipated meeting with president duterte who has overseen a bloody drug war and the big question, did he raise the issue of human rights? nbc's chris giannising has more now from manila. chris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it depends on who you talk with whether human rights came up. according to the white house it did. according to the philippine palace, it did not arise. this of course all in response to what has been, as you said, a bloody drug war here. duterte very proudly going after what he says are the people behind the drug scourge in this country, killing thousands, much criticized by human rights activists because these have happened without benefit of judge or jury. here's what the philippine spokesman for duterte had to say. i'm quoting here. that trump appeared sympathetic, in fact, when duterte discussed the drug menace and did not have any official position on the matter and was merely nodding his head, indicating that he understood the domestic problem that we have faced on drugs. now, publicly at joint statements we just heard, the two men talked about the economy. the president largely praising what's going on back home. take a duterte is the tough-talking leader, and a man who's just fought isis. donald trump wants closer ties on his first visit to any country where isis has taken territory, and terrorism tops their agenda. because of this, it's what's left of it. isis captured the philippine city holding it for five months before losing it just weeks ago. more than half a million people fled this battle, and you can see why. the destruction here is just astonishing. they look like a war-torn streets of iraq or syria, but this was the new front line for isis in asia. it took the city with a few hundred men and held it despite daily airstrikes. and a ferocious assault from troops backed by u.s. special forces. the army retook the city, but only by destroying it. isis lost more than 900 fighters in the battles in these streets, yet it's claiming victory because it held this city for so long. the battle here may be over. the threat from isis is not. they're still hunting for militants in the ruins. the u.s. and the philippines determined to stop isis spreading further across asia. presidents trump and duterte who seem to admire each other's record now united in fighting a common enemy. bill neely, nbc news,
