could weinstein wind up behind bars? those stories plus losing patience. >> get out of my office, now. >> the doctor in hot water for this fight with a sick mom. >> and then jason aldean. and the cubs hang on against the nationals moving chicago one step closer to another world series at wrigley. today, friday, october 13th, 2017. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> they deserved to win that game. >> yeah, i know. >> and we will take this differently for the chicago times, though. let's start with the devastating wildfires happening in california's wine country and other places around the state. this is the deadliest fire season there ever. many of the fires still burning out of control. the return of the gusty winds is making it harder and harder for crews to make any significant advances. al has more on the dangerous conditions in just a minute, but first joe fryer is in santa rosa for us. hi, joe, good morning. >> reporter: firefighters say the emergency is far from over. the fires are still growing and now they are bracing for dangerous conditions this weekend. dry, windy weather that could make the situation here even worse. erratic and dynamic, that's how firefighters are describing the infernos that now killed more than 30 people. in santa rosa alone, fire destroyed more than 2,800 homes including the house of the legendary "peanuts" creator. firefighters are stretched thin, sleeping whenever and wherever they can. we met this crew from southern california after battling a fire in orange county this week, they drove eight hours up north. >> if you had to imagine how bad the fires are this week on a scale of one to ten? >> i will say where we are at right now, a ten. >> reporter: some are still working despite losing their homes. >> i didn't know what gone meant until i saw it. like, nothing is left. >> reporter: amid the ashes, stories of hope. >> it was close. >> reporter: pete demaio's family was rescued by a highway patrol helicopter, and there was only room for four so he stayed behind. >> i called my daughter and said, go and i love you. >> reporter: but the chopper returned for him. >> all my friends lost their homes. he rounded up friends to cook thousands of meals for evacuees, first responders and volunteers. >> there's faith that people want to help each other. >> reporter: this morning most of the fires are between 1% and 10% contained, and the death toll is at 31, and authorities fear that will rise further, and they are investigating hundreds of missing people reports and they are hoping most of those people will be located. >> it's the wind that they are up against. >> yeah, that's the proble that will last through the weekend. we are not seeing any help. of course the bone dry conditions a big problem. you can see we have fire weather watches from one part of the state to the other, and gusty northerly winds, a potential for rapid fire growth. this is an elevated fire threat, strong winds tonight and tomorrow, and these developing fires will spread really rapidly, and unfortunately, you look at the winds we are expecting, starting off this morning, we are going to have higher elevations up to 30-mile-per-hour winds, and santa rosa, 20 miles per hour, and san francisco, 15 to 25. as we get into saturday into sunday, look at this, 60-mile-per-hour winds in the higher elevations. 30-mile-per-hour winds in san francisco and santa rosa. offshore winds intensify, and the smoke is going to be a massive problem. air quality is also an issue. anywhere from unhealthy to very unhealthy throughout a good portion of northern california. guys? >> thank you. lots more to get to this mornin white house. the trump administration revealing plans to end a critic critical component of obamacare, and he took heat over controversial comments over the hurricane in puerto rico. >> reporter: president trump has spent his first months in order trying to reverse obama's health policy piece by piece, and overnight scrapping subsidies that help pay out of pocket health care costs for low income people, a move that could unravel the markets, was all as the president is about to announce a new way forward on iran. president trump taking a double-barrel approach to unraveling obamacare. overnight announcing he will scrap subsidies that are used to help the out of pocket costs for low income people. democratic leaders nancy pelosi and chuck schumer blasting the move and saying it's sabotage. it comes on the heels of an executive order the president signed thursday that allow insurance policies to sell cheaper policies. >> millions and millions will be signing up for it. >> reporter: many think it will derail the signature achievement pz that and congress failed to repeal and replace obamacare. today president trump is expected to announce he will decertify the iran nuclear deal, another obama era agreement. he will kick it to congress for a 60-day review, and congress will decide whether or not to impose new sanctions. it all comes amid reports of turmoil behind the scenes. the president's chief of staff, john kelly, making a surprise appearance on thursday to squash rumors he's close to leaving. >> i'm not quitting today. i don't believe, and i just talked to the president -- i don't think i am being fired today. >> though kelly acknowledging his ten weeks on the job haven't been easy. >> this is really, really hard work, running the united states of america. >> and kelly weighed in on the caught on camera moments where he appears to look frustrated. >> the cameras always catch me when i am thinking hard and it looks like i am frustrated and mad. >> what frustrates the president? >> all of you -- not all of you, but many of you. >> reporter: what about the tweets? >> do his tweets make your job more difficult? >> no. again, i was not sent in -- i was not brought to this job to control anything but the flow of information to our president so he can make the best decisions. >> reporter: the president is up and tweeting this morning about health care saying the democrats and obamacare is imploding, and dems should call me to fix. >> thank you. the president is also coming under intense criticism for his tweet about hurricane relief efforts in puerto rico saying federal emergency crews cannot stay there forever. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in san juan with more on that. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a congressional delegation including house speaker, paul ryan, will visit puerto rico today, and today president trump tweeted the wonderful people of puerto rico with their unmatched spirit know how bad it was before the hurricane. i will always be with them. this morning in hurricane-ravaged puerto rico there's growing anger. >> i think it's conduct that is unbecoming from the leader of the free world. >> reporter: san juan's mayor. >> the president uses twitter. president trump tweeted we cannot keep fema and the military and first responders in puerto rico forever. a different tone from last week. >> we will not rest until that job is done. >> pop singer, marc anthony, calling the president tone deaf and disrespectful. >> as citizens we are not asking for better treatment, for less treatment. we're asking for equal treatment. >> but a fema spokesperson tweeted they will be in impacted areas every day. >> i think a successful recovery means we are not here forever. >> a point echoed by white house chief of staff, john kelly. >> we hope sooner rather than later that the u.s. military and fema generally speaking can with draw because then the government and the people of puerto rico are recovering sufficiently. >> but that recovery seems far off as residents say enough supplies still aren't getting to remote parts of the island. >> reporter: do you think federal response has been enough? >> what federal response? >> the official death toll from maria here in puerto rico is up to 49, including several who died from bacterial infections after the storm. craig and savannah. >> gabe, thank you. also this morning we are learning more about the rescue of an american woman, her husband and children after a five-year hostage ordeal at the hands of a taliban-linked group in afghanistan. richard engel has that report this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the pakistani military says they were freed in a firefight, and relatives say they were stuffed in the back of a car, one of the last things they heard is one of the kidnappers yell kill the hostages, but pakistani commandoes managed to get them out. they say it was a hiking trip that went terribly wrong. five years ago caitlan coleman from pennsylvania and her husband were back tacking in one of the most dangerous parts of afghanistan when they were kidnapped. coleman was pregnant at the time, and while in captivity she gave birth to that child and eventually two others. the children featured prominently in videos taken by kidnappers have never known freedom until now. >> my children have seen their mother defiled. >> and the town in pennsylvania swarmed by reporters pinned a note to the door asking for privacy as they celebrated their joyful news. josh boyle spoke to his parents. >> it was the first time in five years we got to hear his voice, and he told us his grandchildren were looking forward to meeting their grandparents. >> reporter: it's the same faction that held american soldier bowe bergdahl until he was swapped for five prisoners from obama. and then president-elect was asked to make a deal for her release, too. but pakistan says no deal was made, and instead it was a rescue. u.s. intelligence tracking the family as they were moved into pakistan and then a daring raid, commandoes shooting out the tires of the kidnapper's vehicle. but after the rescue. a surprise. coleman's husband turning down an american offer for a flight out of pakistan, a twist to a five-year saga. pakistani military sources says the family left pakistan on a flight to the uk likely bound for canada. back to you. >> all right, thank you. incredible story. two prison employees were killed and a dozen others hurt during an attempted prison break. inmates set fires in the sewing plant on thursday. while it was burning, several inmates tried to escape but were unsuccessful. two prison employees died. three guards remain in critical condition. for the first time we are now hearing the noises that some u.s. embassy workers allegedly heard during the so-called sonic attacks in cuba, but the mystery over what caused them and who is behind them is still very unclear. andrea mitchell has the latest on this. good morning. >> a mystery is it. today relations between the u.s. and cuba approaching a cold war freeze, and more questions than answers on that mysterious illness, and listening to audio on a computer or cell phone is not at all dangerous. new developments on the attacks on u.s. diplomats in cuba, and 22 embassy workers developed physical symptoms, sometimes severe, including brain injuries. the associated press is what is a recording of what some heard in savannah a. high-pitch sound like nails on a chalkboard. the white house not accusing cuba, but saying its government should have protected u.s. diplomats. >> we believe the cuban government could stop the attacks on our diplomats. >> the revelations dealt a blow to the u.s./cuban relationships, and the state department recalling diplomats from havana, and advising u.s. citizens to avoid traveling to cuba. all this amid speculation another government, perhaps russia, could be responsible. >> is there another government that might be involved? >> next season. next season. >> always next year. let's move to the fallout surrounding harvey weinstein and that fall from grace. good morning to you. >> overnight yet another member of the board of representatives has stepped down. according to a source in a position to know. actress rose mcgowan is revealing more about what she says happened between her and harvey weinstein. new photographs obtained by tmz of harvey weinstein out to dinner in arizona. reportedly to enter rehab. rose mcgowan tweeted a shocking allegation. i told the head of your studio that hw raped me. she said when she was working with amazon studios she ignored her claims against harvey weinstein. over and over i said it. he said it hadn't been proven. i said i was the proof. thursday amazon studio head roy price was himself accused of sexual harassment by a tv producer. overnight amazon telling cnbc he's on leave of absence effective immediately. adding, we are reviewing our option with the projects we have with their company. mcgowan reached a settlement in 1997. it's not clear whether she reported the allegations to authorities. a weinstein spokesperson says any allegations of non-consensual sex are denied. a hollywood reporter speaking exclusively about the scandal. >> you can respect people. you can respect women. and it's easy. it's demented not to. hopefully the industry as a whole is getting fed up. >> there is kind of like, a wink and acceptance of that behavior. >> the women who stood up have to be applauded. that's really, really hard to do when nobody wants to stand up. and the silence is deafening. and i think that that's the part that we're responsible for. >> more than 30 women have made accusations against harvey weinstein varying from sexual harassment, assault and rape. kate beckensale was 17. he opened the door in his bath robe. i was naive and young and it didn't cross my mind that this older unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him. years later she said weinstein asked if he had tried anything with her. i realized he couldn't remember if he had assaulted me or not. actress claire forlani said she escaped five times. i ducked dived and got out of there without being slobbered over. the new york police department is conducting a review to determine if there are any additional complaints related to weinstein. police in london say they have received a referral about a sexual assault possibly involving weinstein. the new allegations shining an unappealing life on an open hollywood secret. >> it's the entitlement of too many men. it's epidemic. when they're famous and powerful like harvey then it gets talked about. >> this man is at the top of a very particular iceberg. i don't think you can describe him as a sex addict, he's a predator. >> julia roberts who earned an oscar nomination from a weinstein produced film. i hope we will stand up against this predatory behavior. rose mcgowan has called for women to boycott twitter for the day after her account was temporarily suspended. this protest is continuing on. twitter said she was blocked for posting a personal phone number. they restored her account as soon as the number was deleted. this story, it won't go away. it's only getting worse. >> thank you. we should mention -- you can see that full video from the hollywood report at today.com. let's turn to megyn kelly who joins us. megyn, an attorney. people hear these alt glegation and think how is this person having dinner in scottsdale. >> as a practical matter it's very difficult to bring cases, we believe there are investigations open in new york, california and london. the chances of bringing a rape case or a sexual battery case or even a public indecency case this many years after the fact. the alleged rapes that have been brought forward, he denies them all i should say, are over ten years old. in new york, for example, if it happened before 2006, at that point there was a ten year statute of limitations. the claims would be barred. look what happened in the bill crosby case. all those women were there, they couldn't make the case. the jury did not come back with a conviction. >> let's talk about the civil possibilities here. you have 30 women, some telling the same kind of story. a lot don't know each other. does it strengthen the idea of a civil case against him? >> absolutely. because in the law, you usually can't get in what we call prior evidence of bad acts unless you can show pattern. unless you can show pattern. all the women coming forward could be really helpful in case, you know, a case is brought. civilly is where, not just weinstein but the weinstein company have the most exposure. the problem for them is what are the women going to say in terms -- like, if you worked for the weinstein company you got fired if you didn't sleep with weinstein. one woman says he grabbed her years ago and suffered a bunch of emotional distress, that's hard to prove. >> or she said i didn't get opportunities, hard to prove. >> it's tough to prove that in a court of law. there is more exmoeposure than criminally. but i think the biggest problem is a business matter. their reputation has been ruined. everybody understands what he's been doing. you've got 30 women coming forward now. 30. i bet there will be more. that's how these things go once the flood gates open. >> the board insisted -- they were quote, shocked and dismayed. utter surprise is how they describe it. do you buy that? if this is such an open secret in hollywood as it seems to be? how could the corporate managers be completely clueclassleless f decades. >> good question. if they were clueless, why? why were you so clueless. where was your oversight? that's the purpose of the board. this is the guy running the company. we know they knew of at least four settlements. >> it divides people in four categories depending on how they respond to expectations put on to them by other people and also how they respond to expectations put upon them by themselves. >> you say the tendencies, you're born with them. it's not nurture, it's nature. >> i think so. you bring the tendencies into the world with you. >> if you know them, if you can't change it, how does knowing it, reading this book, how does that help you navigate the world? >> it helps you because if you're frustrated by something or puzzled by something you can understand yourself better. i keep saying i want to write a novel in my free time, why can't i do it. if you're somebody trying to get somebody else to do something, this is going to explain how you can communicate with them more effectively. >> all right, i took the quiz myself. i tell you what i am. okay, the first category, these are the upholders. what does this mean? >> i want to use my new techniq technique. >> nobody has ever said give it to me let me do it. a sharp knife is important. we only have two minutes so you need to rock and roll. >> we need to keep moving, hot dogs. >> you cook them all down, add the tomatoes. a little salt. and there we go. fennel seed. cook those down. i'm going to have to -- >> mr. roker, what's the verdict? >> terrific, great hot dog. >> put whatever you want on the hot dog. take the bun, put it like this, chop it with the onions and the mushrooms. >> does the second order matter? >> the hot dog goes down first, toppings after. do you want to hold it?
