And we streamed it online. Lets get right to those latest details. In the last hour and a half, the sonoma sheriff raised the death toll to 14 in that county alone. Now, 24 people are confirmed dead in all the Northern California fire storms, and there are still 463 active missing persons reports. Additional resources allowed firefighters to make progress on containment and we have more on y at in just a moment. Son two alleged looters were rosest the yesterday. Lets look at the mandatory evacuations which are now in effect for parts of geyserville, sonoma, and santa rosa. There are at least eight different fires burning in napa, sonoma, and sow la know countyings. Now more than 100,000 acres have been destroyed. S nears map, you can see how far its expanded into three different bay area counties. Well go back now to nbc bay area sky ranger over the area and you can see lots of active smoke, the flames seem to have died down just a little bit, but we know somethings burning bc bayall of that smoke. We have Team Coverage across osa why area this morning. Covering that breaking store. We started with bob redell, he is live in Sonoma County, the Sheriffs Office in santa rosa, just wrapped up a press conference, bob. Three more People Killed in this weeks fire bringing the death toll for Sonoma County to 14 and the sheriff expects that death toll to increase as he moves to a recovery phase and moves through the lists of missing persons reported. That list stands at just over 460. There are 30 detectives who are trying to determine who on that list is just out of reach versus who is actually missing. There are ten people with cadaver dogging performing the search and recovery, another ten people on the way. The sheriff wouldnt say where the bodies were found or not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Identification is going to be hard. So far in the recovery, we have found bodies that were almost completely intact and we have found bodies that are nothing more than ash and bone. One of the ways that we make ids in those cases is through medical devices. There have been ids in this case in a pile of ash and bone where there was a piece of metal left from snbs surgery, like a hip replacement and that helped us id the person. Im sorry to have to tell you that, that is what were faced with in this fire as far as identifying people and recovering people. And that is why identification might take a long time in some of the cases. Reporter 900 people were initially reported missing in snow in a ma county since those reports, 437 have been found safe. There are still 463 people still unaccounted for note bothery is something to note is that it could include duplicate reports. If you did file a report and whoever you are reporting missing has been found, the Sheriffs Office would like you to call this number to let them know so they can take that persons name off the list. 7075653856. Its on your tv screen. The Sheriffs Office has not ordered evacuations since yesterday evening. Those neighborhoods might not reopen until monday at the earliest. Deputies arrested two more people in the evacuation zones last night on suspicion that they might be looting bringing total of five over the past few nights. There is a report that the countys Emergency Service coordinator, decided not to send out a text alert sunday night. Alerting residents about the fire for fear it would cause panic and hamper the First Responders. The sheriff says he was not aware of that report as far as hes concerned, the messaging going out have been fine. He referred us to a briefing that will be taking place at 1 00 thatll involve all the agencies involved in the fire response. Reporting live here outside the Sonoma County Sheriffs Office, this dell, nbc bay area news. Se tll right, thanks bob for that update. Well now to napa county where air drops are happening right now. Dousing flames as the wild fires rage on there as well. Nbc bay areas reporter is there near the atlas fire. You talked with the Lieutenant Governor about the states response to the disaster. If. Reporter thats right, crist and marcus, weve seen about a dozen air drops within the past hour just right behind me. What theyre doing is basically cutting across the ridge right behind me and you can see thats where the atlas fire is taking place. And its involving napa county and solano county. Lieutenant governor gavin newson is in napa checking with businesses and employees. He says hes also here to provide longterm assistance from the states. It is an opportunity to begin a new, more aggressive collaboration across states in terms of new technologies and Fire Suppression strategies so we can mitigate Something Like this from happening ever again. Reporter cal fires says we are still in red flag conditions because of the low humidity. The fire is still threatening structures in some parts of Sonoma County. Fortunately the strong winds didnt materialize joovr night and firefighters were able to keep the tubbs fire from spreading from downtown calistoga. This was from highway 29 just ten minutes from the downtown area. All of calistoga is under a mandatory evacuation and back here live, you could probably hear the helicopters, josh, if you can show over here, you can see one over to my left here going across the ridge. So definitely an active situation and the quote that came out today, its a different day, its a good day. Theyre hoping the winds will corporate later today and in the few days to come. Reporting live from napa county, nbc bay area news. Thank you, sharon. Well turning to the weather and those winds still fueling the windes. Anying smoke barrelling into the San Francisco bay. Meteorologist has been tlaking the winds all morning long, any relief in sight . Right now as we saw from sharons point of view, at least the wind helping to get visibility, good enough for air crews to work there in the north bay, but you could see the effect of the north wind across the bay, San Francisco just sopped in by a lot of smoke. 63 degrees, wind speeds not all that bad, check out this gusts in the east bay. Up to 54 miles per hour, rose peak, east of san jose, up to 38 miles per hour. But heres the good news. Atlas peak there, only 23 miles per hour, and right now we have winds of about 10 to 15, a lot less than previously expected with the forecast. At least with the north bay between now and about 6 30, wind speeds holding about the same rate. May get more gusty here in northern Sonoma County. Here is the big story, here is the humidity levels, bone dry. Went dont have very strong winds, but these low humidity levels and very dry conditions obviously the fuel moistures and the hillside, bone dry this time of year. E in napa will be the relative humidity close to 2 30 this afternoon. 12 in fairfield, 13 and thats the reason why the red flag warning will be up through about 5 00 this evening for the north bay, east bay, and santa cruz mountain. Now while this expires this evening, were tracking another wind event that likely prevent stronger winds as we head to the weekend. Hour by hour coming up on the whocast in about eight minutes. All right, thank you very much, rob. So that smoke is clearly a problem for people with breathing trouble. Raveanyone who spends time outside sensitive groups as cancellaso affecting travelers would you believe. Right now there is about a 45 minute delay at sfo. Sanso far there were 91 cancellations. Yesterday, the airport had to cancel 80 flights because of low visibility. You caused to that with the fog, ly todver smoke. So far, no delays or cancellations in oakland nor san jose, but make sure you call aread before you fly today or if oure picking anyone up from sfo. Voluntere are evacuation orders in place. Faie mandatory evacuation causrs have been issued for grain valley, a volunteering order was issued for east ridge. Fairfield, schools are closed through friday. This is because of bad air quality. Officials there are advising evale to pack a bag and be ell y to move quickly. Dif people are already taking shelter in Evacuation Centers at community center, volunteers tell us that food and water donations are making a huge difference. That just shows the unity that its just outpouring. Its ridiculous how great it is. You know, and its very important to show that, you know, we are united. We are United People here. Well today several east bay schools are closed because of inezsmoke thats coming off of st ce wild fires and wafting into other areas. Re closures include districts in antioch, pittsburgh, west Contra Costa Unified School district as well. Heres an official from that School District explaining the decision. Its a difficult decision to close schools and just the fires and the inability to predict exactly how bad it will be forced this decision. Student, staff, people in the community are feeling the effects of the smoke and the air quality and so, obviously thats something we want to make sure that were addressing and aware sences other schools are in session. T taking steps to chemokids safe, that includes things like axcusing absences for folks with health trouble, cancelling all outdoor practices and recesses. Schools will also keep windows and doors shut tight and san jose unified has active filtration systems. Everyone is usualed to get a 95 mask like this. Doesnt have to have that vent in the middle. Ow tust has to say n95 on it wed stay inside and keep your mer conditioner on recirculate. Right now many people are wondering how they can help victims of the fire. In fact, thats almost all of ink is rigons that ive gotten. We posted a link on our website with some ideas. Ornit nbcbayarea. Com and find the link right under the top story. Other top story this o ining, family and friends are stang goodbye to a woman killed during the mass shooting in las vegas. We have new video into our newsroom of people arriving to the visitation and funeral mass. This is at st. Marys cathedral in San Francisco. Cert ent to school in san ramone, now living in novato, her husband is a San Francisco police officer. He survived the concert shooting. The night that the mass shooting happened, he told his wife to ng out safety while he helped live lr wounded person. Our live coverage of the north bay wild fires burning out of control continues. Coming up, we will take you back used out to the scene as we ask what started it all. The clues our Investigative Unit have uncovered about what caused these devastating north bay wild fires. You could save energy by living off the grid. Completely. Or. Set the washing machine to cold. Do your thing. Energy upgrade california. Ad lib latest from cal fire continuing coverage now of the north bay wild fires as we look live it doesnt get easier to see as we visit our old video this morning. From those areas and certainly this is what everyone is talking about even outside those fire zones. We to want go to josh ruben seen it from cal fire who joins us live on the phone right now and hopefully youre celebrating a little bit of containment news right now. We did get news from Sonoma County, they had to increase their death toll by one more person which means there are 24 people confirmed dead in this fire. We know that you are still working to get access for folks who are looking to see for those missing people reports, right . I mean, these are still hot, active fires. Well they are, and in respect to that death toll, that is in totality for Northern California on our fire that number is not that significant. I believe its 14ish, 14 or 15, we have Damage Assessment crews that are on the ground going through the burned areas. They identify damage structures. We currently have 576 confirmed structures that have been destroyed, but we anticipate that number going up, and unfortunately along with that, they also look for and try and set to numbers missing people. We currently have about 285, 300 people unaccounted for. The number of fatalities could possiblily unfortunately go up as well. And josh, talk to me just about the importance of people staying clear of certain areas, especially those evacuated areas because of course that could cause you all a hindrance in the fight that you have ahead of you. Absolutely. The intention of the incident command staff is to get these folks that have been displaced from their homes either because of the homes being destroyed or because of danger in the area. If we to want get them back into their homes, we call that repopulation. The caveat to that is the emphasis is on safety. Even though theres a great desire for folks to get back in there, thats not going to happen until pge, the gas company, Law Enforcement, the fire officials have vetted that particular area to make sure its safe because we could have downed power lines, we could have gas leaks, fallen trees, debris that makes it unsafe for folks to go into. Thats not going to happen until the area is vetted. We heard the chief earlier this morning out of napa and saying that, out of sonoma and he was saying there finally are enough resources that you all are able to turn, not just from protecting the structures and lifesaving but actually fighting those fires as well. Can you talk about that . Well absolutely. Even when the fire first broke out the focus was obvious on life safety evacuations and then property conservation over the last 24, 36 hours weve had Additional Resources coming into our specific incident which allows folks on the ground to focus not only on fire containment but what we call mopping up ensuring that the hot spots are cold because with the wind events weve had and the wind events that we anticipate, embers can fly, if you will, and then go a great distance and start another fire which obviously we dont want to the happen. So yes, we do have crews that are working in the mopup phase and we do have crews that are working directly and indirectly in Fire Suppression. All right, thank you very much, josh ruben seen it of cal fire. We know well be listening in and carrying that News Conference with cal fire and cal at 1 00 this afternoon as well. Thanks for joining us. Youre very well. When it comes to cal fire, its not just the flames theyre fighting, theyre also looking into what started the fire. We listened to recordings and found numerous reports of downed electrical starting around 9 20 sunday evening. Its report to the regulators, now cal fire is taking a closer look as were all starting to get a better idea of what led to this disaster. There was a vegetation fire. This is one of the first calls that came in sunday. 9 22 p. M. , reports of a vegetation fire at 310 buckingham drive in santa rosa. Electrical investigation, 47 and Maverick Court. Less than a minute later, an electrical investigation on Maverick Court off Mark West Springs road. Possible transformer explosion. Reporter a minute after that, reports of a transformer explosion in santa rosas larkfield neighborhood. Records show during the next two hours, dispatchers sent crews to at least ten locations with blown transformers or downed power lines and reported 14 instances of fallen trees. Theres numerous limbs. We need to find out what the cause of the fires were. Reporter jerry hill has been critical of the way pge maintains Power Equipment and trims trees around power lines. He spoke with us from overseas. Utility is supposed to make sure that these lines are safe, that the trees are safe. And that theres no contact or potential for that. If this proves to be the case then we have some serious problems. Reporter cal fire doesnt know for certain if pges Electrical Equipment played a role, but the investigators are now fanned out across the region looking for causes, including the possible links to power lines. Liz wagner, nbc bay area news. Its going to take a lot to time to find those answers. We know some of the evacuations have expanded just in the last couple of moments that weve been on the air. Were going to put those up on a graphic to see those in just a moment. We want to talk about that red flag danger and the winds didnt materialize last night which was good news, theyre not dying down. Yeah, and thats a push for those north winds to give us a lot of smoke around the bay area. Strongest winds around the diablo range out towards the area, gusts about 50. Look at all of that haze. The smoke continues to move south. 64 degrees there. Currently in tiburon as we see mostly cloudy skies, and as we go into San Francisco, we also have mostly cloudy conditions and smoke continues to be a big part of the story there for places like, as you look there at tiburon and into San Francisco as were about to see as the smoke continues to move south. Emeryville currently looking at 60s as well. You can see the hazy skies there too. And into san jose, 66, so no matter where you are around the bay area, thanks to the north wind direction, the smoke continues pouring south and look at that, San Francisco, you cant see the golden gate bridge. You cant see alcatraz off into the bay as the worst air quality looefl were seeing right now across the bay area. Pinpoint is up towards the north bay into San Francisco. Beyond just unhealthy for sensitive groups which alone would trig aerospare the air day. Weve got into healthy and in fact dangerous to hazardous air quality and napa counties and into contra costa coun
