A. , new york, chicago, and houston all coming out on top leaving just six teams left in the hupnt for the world series today, tuesday, october 10, 2017. Glad to have you with us on a tuesday morning, and we are starting our show out west today. Thats right. Its our top story. Those wildfires that are now consuming parts of california. More than two dozen burning in all, and theyre being blamed now for at least 11 deaths. That is a number that officials do expect to rise. So among the 1,500 homes and businesses that have already been destroyed, several wineries in napa and sonoma, governor jerry brown quickly declaring states of emergency in those counties and in six others. Take a look at this. It really shows the scale of devastation. These are before and after images from a neighborhood near downtown santa rosa. Before and then the aftermath. Nbcs joe fryer is live there for us this morning. Joe, good morning to you. Savannah, good morning. As you can see, smoke filling the air neighborhood after neighborhood evacuated as these fires burned. This fire where im standing in santa rosa still 0 containment. Eventually hundreds of families will return home to sites like this. Houses destroyed by wildfires that are raging through californias wine country. This is my neighborhood in flames. Reporter for many there was little time to flee as fastmoving flames tore through Northern California fueled by dry conditions and wind gusts topping 50 miles an hour. Its horrible. I couldnt stay because i couldnt breathe. Reporter across Northern California thousands were under evacuation orders, two hospitals. One of them moved 130 patients. The most critical still hooked up to vital machines as they were rushed through dense smoke. Dozens of other evacuees were rescued. A california Highway Patrol helicopters were used. Its been a terrifying night for a great many people. Reporter across the region 15 fires are burning in eight counties, scorching vineyards and wineries and leveling entire neighborhoods taking down houses, big and small. I was very worried. Like my neighbors house burned down, but i saved mine. In all 1,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed, including the house that belonged to will and bev buchanan. This was supposed to be your retirement home, you said . Well, it was, yeah. Weve been here about 20 years. Well have to retire again. Reporter in Southern California another windfueled fire ripped through Anaheim Hills with smoke and flames visible from disneyland. At least 24 structures burned to the ground. Literally this just went up in seconds. Reporter many more were threatened. Well, just really nervous and scary. You know, everything that we worked so hard for is in this home, and just the thought of losing it is just terrifying. Reporter a time of year when the fire risk is especially high with parched land and gusty winds driving deadly destructive wildfires across the state. Its pretty awful, but were all healthy and safe, and we have to just try to be grateful for that, but its pretty awful. Reporter in all, these fires have now burned more than 70,000 acres of land in a short period of time, which is pretty devastating. The winds have died down, which is slowing the growth of these fires. Thats good news, but theres still burning everywhere. Its going it take a while to get them under control. Savannah and matt. Joe, thank you. We are joined by cal fire deputy chief scott maclean. Good morning to you. Good morning. I know you have been listening to that report just the way we have. Youre on the grouped. Y ground. You know although these numbers. 73,000 acres. The one piece of good news i took out of joes report was that wind situation. Tell me more. Yesterday afternoon it was nice and calm. Well, reasonably calm. Today its starting out the same way. We still have whats called an inversion layer thats keeping that smoke level down. Its hard to see. We can hear engines patrolling behind me as theyre checking all these different structures that have been destroyed. As long as the wind stays put, our humidity continues to rise, the weather stays cooler, well get a lot of work done today and tomorrow. Did this fire come on really fast, and we had a lot of people telling our reporters they barely had time to get out of their houses and evacuate. Right. Theres you were mentioning in the picture of the subdivision, santa rosa. I went and looked at that yesterday. Over on the east side of santa rosa, theres several blocks of destruction, but what keyed it to me was the fact that the cars are still in the driveway. They were burned, but very few cars, very few people were able to take their vehicles with them. They all stayed, and thats where they are in time right now. Most people had to flee on their feet, and what little cars they could take. Chief, really quickly, i know theres some individual circumstances, some seniors living at assisted Living Centers over in Sonoma County, and they had to leave, and theres worries about them getting back and getting medicine and medical care that they need. How are you dealing with that . Thats really not an issue. Its just the amount of folks that have been affected by this one particular fire alone. Law enforcement, fire folks, we all joined together as well as Public Health within the county, county functions also step up to the plate, which they have been doing. Red cross included. We are able to get those meds, get whatever those folks need within reason, of course. All right. Deputy chief scott maclean, chief, good luck to you and your folks this morning. Were all thinking about you. Thank you. We turn now to al and the winds do seem to be getting firefighters a break. They are, but not for long, unfortunately. Wish we had better news. We still have that fire danger now for much of Southern California. Off shore winds this morning. Dry conditions. That rapid fire threat still out there. This is from go 16. We couldnt show you this a year ago, but with the newest sal light, you can see the fires and the smoke coming out, and right now weve got winds that are fairly calm, but as today wears on, but more importantly, tomorrow those winds pick up, and thats going to cause a rapid spread of more fire, unfortunately. Back to you, guys. All right, al. Well check with you in a little while. Another major story this morning, President Trump speaking out in a new interview and what he has to say could further strain an already tense relationship with his secretary of state Rex Tillerson. Nbc National CorrespondentPeter Alexander has that story. Peter, good morning to you. Hey, matt. Good morning to you. This should make for interesting conversation today. The president set to host Rex Tillerson as well as his defense secretary, james mattis for lunch here at the white house. It comes after President Trumps latest counter punch. This time a jab at tillerson, whose friction with his boss, is now impossible to hide. Reporter this morning President Trump taking a dig at his secretary of state. In Forbes Magazine just out today, responding to nbcs newss exclusive reporting that Rex Tillerson privately described the president as a moron last summer. I think its fake news, mr. Trump says, but if he did that, i guess well have to compare iq tests, and i can tell you who is going to win. The president acknowledging that they have some opposing views. Ultimately my view matters, he says, thats the way life goes. I on one flash point, north korea. Days after telling tillerson to stop wasting his time on diplomacy arguing im not undermining. I think im actually strengthening authority. Asked whether being commander in chief is lonely, its a lonely position because the decisions are so grave, so big. The president s bitter feud with fellow republican bob corker threatening to further isolate him. As corker warns President Trumps threats could have dire consequences. He doesnt realize that, you know, that we could be heading towards war war iii. Republican senator Chuck Grassley tried to turn down the heat. Both ought to cool it. Next question. Reporter even as the president invited Lindsey Graham for a round of golf, talking immigration and tax cuts, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell is standing by corker. Senator corker is a valued america of the congress and the senate, key player on the budget. Were going to be turning to the budget next week, and he will be a big help in helping us get it passed. While former white house chief strategist steve bannon is not. If bob corker has any honor, any decency, he should resign immediately. He should not let his words stand in the way. Reporter bannon, of course, ramping up his war with pretty much the entire republican establishment declaring he will support candidates in at least a dozen Senate Republican primaries. As striking as anything here, the fact that most republican senators were relatively silent on corkers blistering comments about the president trying to steer clear of them altogether and simply not get involved. Matt and savannah. Together. All right. Peter alexander. Thank you. Theres another simmering feud at the white house, this one involves the first lady. Shes firing back at the president s exwife, ivana after ivana boasted of her access to the president and even referred to herself as first lady. Hallie jackson with more on this one. Reporter hi. And is honored by her role as first playedy of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. Thats a pointed dig at the former mrs. Donald trump. Whos on a book tour talking about her relationship with her exhusband and his relationship with their three kids. Don jr. , ivanka and eric. So you thought e wait a minute, if were going to talk about who raised the trump kids. It was definitely me. It was not the father which would take a stroller and go to the central park or play baseball with them. It was only until they were about 18yearold he could communicate with them because he could start to talk business with them. The trumps split up in 1992 after his affair with marla maples became public. The two of them became an item before end mg the relationship in 1997 with President Trump marrying melania in 2005. Still he keeps in touch with wife u number 1, talking every couple weeks she says. He asks me should i tweet, should i not tweet . I said i think you should tweet. Advice to a trump, from a trump far from the white house but far from forgotten.
