So among the 1,500 homes and businesses that have already been destroyed, several wineries in napa and sonoma, governor jerry brown quickly declaring states of emergency in those counties and in six others. Reporter for many there was little time to flee as fastmoving flames tore through Northern California fueled by dry conditions and wind gusts topping 50 miles an hour. Its horrible. I couldnt stay because i couldnt breathe. Reporter across Northern California thousands were under evacuation orders, two hospitals. One of them moved 130 patients. The most critical still hooked up to vital machines as they were rushed through dense smoke. Dozens of other evacuees were rescued. A california Highway Patrol helicopters were used. Its been a terrifying night for a great many people. Reporter across the region 15 fires are burning in eight counties, scorching vineyards and wineries and leveling entire neighborhoods taking down houses, big and small. I was very worried. Like my neighbors house burned down, but i saved mine. In all 1,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed, including the house that belonged to will and bev buchanan. This was supposed to be your retirement home, you said . Well, it was, yeah. Weve been here about 20 years. Well have to retire again. Reporter in Southern California another windfueled fire ripped through Anaheim Hills with smoke and flames visible from disneyland. At least 24 structures burned to the ground. Literally this just went up in seconds. Reporter many more were threatened. Well, just really nervous and scary. You know, everything that we worked so hard for is in this home, and just the thought of losing it is just terrifying. Reporter a time of year when the fire risk is especially high with parched land and gusty winds driving deadly destructive wildfires across the state. Its pretty awful, but were all healthy and safe, and we have to just try to be grateful for that, but its pretty awful. Reporter in all, these fires have now burned more than 70,000 acres of land in a short period of time, which is pretty devastating. The winds have died down, which is slowing the growth of these fires. Thats good news, but theres still burning everywhere. Its going it take a while to get them under control. Savannah and matt. Did this fire come on really fast, and we had a lot of people telling our reporters they barely had time to get out of their houses and evacuate. Right. Theres you were mentioning in the picture of the subdivision, santa rosa. I went and looked at that yesterday. Over on the east side of santa rosa, theres several blocks of destruction, but what keyed it to me was the fact that the cars are still in the driveway. They were burned, but very few cars, very few people were able to take their vehicles with them. They all stayed, and thats where they are in time right now. Most people had to flee on their feet, and what little cars they could take. Chief, really quickly, i know theres some individual circumstances, some seniors living at assisted Living Centers over in Sonoma County, and they had to leave, and theres worries about them getting back and getting medicine and medical care that they need. How are you dealing with that . Thats really not an issue. Its just the amount of folks that have been affected by this one particular fire alone. Law enforcement, fire folks, we all joined together as well as Public Health within the county, county functions also step up to the plate, which they have been doing. Red cross included. At 9 59 p. M. , the unsuspecting guard responded to an alarm set off by an open door on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay, a room unrelated to paddocks suite. Overnight, firefighters in california are battling a winddriven brush fire, thats scorching parts of the state and forcing evacuation of thousands of residents. Two fires in sonoma and napa counties, with wind gusts topping 50 miles per hour, are part of a series of blazes that raged across the northern part of the state. Across the region, 15 fires are burning in 8 counties, scorching vineyards and wineries. This is my neighborhood, in flames. Reporter and leveling entire neighborhoods. Residents grabbing what they could, as the fires continue to burn, taking down houses big and small. Its horrible. I couldnt stay because i couldnt breathe. Its overwhelming at times because, obviously, as an actor, you want to have all of the answers and know the life thats been lived. As actors, were finding out pieceme piecemeal, as the audience is. I dont have all the answers. We want to get the answers that you do have out of you. Were going to get one. The transformation process from the Young Rebecca to the old rebecca. It takes 3 1 2 hours. A lot of prosthetics. A lot of making weird faces and stretching my skin. Im so used to it now. Its not a big deal. Do you read a book . I try to participate in the process. Theres a lot of having to blow dry. I handle the blow drier to speed the process along. Lets talk about the season premiere. I dont think im giving spoiler alerts. We know theres a charred house. We dont know how it got charred. Yes. You had a code word for this . I think its okay with it. We called it the marble. Oh. When the marble happens, they were listen. Weve been holding on to this secret for like a year and a half now. They built the house outside of l. A. All of the signs that say tiu around town, it was a different word to throw people off in case someone was being followed to set. This is cia stuff. I have never been a part of Something Like this before. One of the other cool relationships you have, with chrissy metz. Other and daughter. You called your own mom after reading some of the scenes. I recognized some of the same behavior that i exhibited towards my own mother. That i could snap on her for no reason. As you do if youre a mom. You feel terrible. Why do we do that . I dont know. Weve never done that. I felt like i read the script initially and bawled and called my mom. What did she say . I think she appreciated the call out of nowhere, for no reason. When youre a kid, your perspective on your mom, is your job revolves around me. And when you grow up, my mom is a whole human, with a whole life experience. And the show explores that. I feel like even though im not a mother myself, playing the role of a mother, gives me incredible insight and a lot of newfound appreciation for my mom. Can we say congratulations to engagement to your longtime boyfriend. I am excited. Are you looking at a family . Yes. You are. Yes. I feel like this show has put me on the speed track for that, too. Not only dealing with that on an emotional level, you put the reporter to work. Stage 3 cancer you get that call. What doctor do you choose . How do you know theyre the best doctor . I found myself at ground zero trying to figure that out. In this book, we get on step on step, how to check on doctors. How to make sure theres no lawsuits. How do do that. Without dwelling too much on the personal side, you had a bout with skin cancer. And we launched a series on this show. I have never spoken about this before. I decided to handle it myself. Melanoma. I was diagnosed with melanoma. Scared me as a dad. You ahave cancer. And you have to fight that on an emotional level. I go to the store, my dermatologist told me, you have to protect yourself. Im paying all this extra money for spf 100, 110. And anything over spf 50 doesnt help you. A waste of your time and money. Something we have in common. As children, we were both at home when there was a home breakin. That happened to me on a couple of occasions. Really influenced you and how you deal with the stories on this show. I was 10. How old were you . It happened three times. Thats scary. At different stages of my life. I was 10 years old. Someone was trying to bang down our back door. They were kicking. They were almost in the house. My dad was screaming, i have a bat. I have a gun. He had neither. Im paralyzed in my bed. It did traumatize me. I tell you how to handle a home invasion. I tell you how to get out of that situation. If youre in the situation, how to get out of it more. Whats the story you have done for this show that you were surprised by the findings . Hackers are getting into your web cam. You have no idea. When the computer is off. Hackers can watch you with this. So, what i always say is, take a piece of tape. The pope does it. Mark zuckerberg does it. The former fbi director does it. Put it over the web cam lens when youre using it. And close the laptop when youre not using it. Mold in your house. It can get into places you dont think about. How do you fight it . Hidden mold. We showed a mom showing her sippy cup that was full of mold. You have to get inside. You have to get inside and really pull it apart. This is where the mold building up when there is moisture. Thats on a sippy cup. On bath toys, every three weeks, cut open the bath toys to see. No mold in here because we have checked it. This is where mold grows. And the bottom of shampoo bottles, as well. Jeff, congratulations on the book. Her bookbook has the same title of her cooking show, valeries home cooking. Youre not paying attention. Im not. Someone told me if i really want to get to know you, i should spend a little time with you in the kitchen. Yeah. What would i learn from spending time with you in the kitchen at home . Thats how i show my love. Thats how i learned to love. All about love, around the table, with the people that make your life important. A lot of the recipes you make today, passed down . I stole from my mother. Thats not stealing, secically. We did not have bread in the house. My husbands favorite sandwich is a blt. If you dont have tomatoes from your garden, canned tomatoes are fine. I want to show you a trick of scoring the tomatoes with an x. And get them in salted boiling water. And you take them into ice water. You get them to the point where they girl up on the ends. That helps you what . Peel them . You take these out. And they peel way easier. And you get all that off. And theyre ready to be chopped and put into this pot right here. They sell cans of tomatoes with that stuff done for you. What am i going to do with tomatoes in my garden . California weather is ridiculously beautiful. We have bacon. I usually put my bacon in the oven. But its important to do this step for that. For nibbling. An i need that oil. The oil is going to flavor my onions. All this gorgeous bacon fat comes out. And that ends up being a topping on your pasta. Were saving everything in the pan after you get the bacon out. Once you do, once youve saved all of the bacon grease, you take your unionions that ha been sliced. I can hear them num, numing without us. Who started on the wine already . We did. You have to have wine when you cook. I know. How long is that going to cook down . Thats going to saute until it looks like this. Make sure they see that. Nice and brown and soft and gorgeous. They get nice and tender. All that flavor of the bacon grease in there. The aforementioned tomatoes have been chopped up and seeded. You take the insides out and get those in. And you saute a little bit more. A pinch of salt . Youve done this before. And a little chili pepper flake. Thats pep center. Thats pepper. And a little bit of white wine. You let that white wine cook off because the alcohol will cook away. Perfect. Lets move down here. All right. Push me. Push me. Okay. This is all together. If it doesnt look like its got enough sauce in there, you save that pasta sauce. Thats an important sauce. It has all of the flavor. Highly salted. Thats going to add the flavor. You have the tomatoes, the onion and the bacon grease. You add your cooked pasta. And you get your arugula. Why not . You can never have too much bacon. We didnt have a chance to talk about the garlic bread. Thats good. Got to serve it with garlic bread. The there anything better than garlic bread . Ill do that on the plate. This is not quite warm enough. So, im going to get these platters over here. These are gorgeous. This is what happens. And you sprinkle the rest of the bacon on top.
