where we have multiple things going on at multiple properties? >> reporter: the actions of the lone gunman now known. but why is still unclear. officials say his girlfriend, marilou danley, told authorities paddock may have suffered from mental health issues and sometimes would lie in bed crying out, oh, my god. this morning investigators trying to make sense of this senseless massacre. investigators say they received tips that paddock was spotted with a woman the day of the shootings but so far they have not been able to identify that woman. they also say there appears to be no solid evidence that paddock had an escape plan, so they are still working on that. craig and savannah. >> thank you so much. pete williams has more on the investigation. pete, let's pick it up where miguel left off. there's some kind of mental health issue with the shooter. what are you learning? >> that's something they want to dig into. they're getting different accounts of it. his brother said he knew of no mental illness. he was taking valium. some neighbors said he looked like he lost a lot of weight. and there's the girlfriend state of him crying out in agony at night. investigators say they have any health problems to find, physical or mental, that are grave enough to push him into being a killer. >> pete, what more do we know about the note that officials say was found in the hotel room? >> there was a note. you can see it in some of the pictures that were leaked by somebody in the police department. you see it there. local and federal officials say this was not a suicide note. it doesn't say anything about the shooting. it was apparently a bunch of numbers and they are trying to figure out what the significance of that is. >> and the sheriff said the other day, he thought the shooter had some kind of help. have we learned anymore about the working theory there? >> it remains a theory. it's a critical focus of the investigation. but they believe he bought all of the guns himself. and he bought thousands of rounds of ammunition. that's harder to track. in fact, they have already spoke to some of the dealers who sold him the ammunition. >> what about all of the explosives that were found in his car? do officials think he was trying to make a carbomb, as well? >> i've not heard that. they don't know what to make of the explosive material. none of it had been mixed, the stuff called tannerite. it comes in two parts, and you have to mix it together. just sitting in the containers, it wouldn't blow up even if somebody shot at it. there were not enough bomb parts. an investigation is coming from all of the electronic things he left behind. so far, they say, looking at that, they don't see an indication that he was looking on the internet for bomb-making instructions, craig. >> a lot of strands to sort out for investigators. pete, thank you. there's lots more to get to, including a cryptic comment from president trump calling the gathering the, quote, calm before the storm. what storm is he talking about? or the president decides he's had enough? >> it looks like a when instead of an if. they're in a situation that's a bit untenable. what is the world seeing here? this isn't the president having a dispute with his labor secretary. this is the president having a dispute with the person that is the face of american diplomacy for the world. so, that -- that's not good for the office of the presidency, to have the secretary of state disparage him. and it's not good for the president to have his leadership questioned like this for around the world. look, i think they're in a situation where it's just not a good place for either one of him. i don't think he can be an effective secretary of state right now. >> according to our reporting, the president was furious when rex tillerson called him a moron. and that's something he did not deny saying. >> that is, i think, what is -- this is why i think when he is referring to a storm, he's referring to that. you wonder if the secretary of state had denied himself saying that word on camera. as you recall, the president was midair when rex tillerson did this extraordinary news conference. he was midair, on his way to las vegas. he was watching live. as our reporting indicates, when he didn't deny that comment, it might as well have been a confirmation. and that just amped up, i think, the president's ire even more. >> the state department denied it but tillerson didn't. >> let's talk about bump-stocks. looks like congress is changing a bit. the nra perhaps behind the legislation that would end these things. do you get the suspicion that we might see more on guns? >> not at all. if anything, i think you will see -- i will be surprised if congress ever votes on this. i think the nra, they made it clear, this would be a regulatory decision by atf. why would they prefer that? they don't -- by the way, i think congressional republican leaders would prefer that. why? they don't want more votes on gun control measures, while they might fail, would be tough votes for some republicans to defend in some parts of the country going into 2018. i don't see this as any sort of first step into a larger conversation on gun regulations. this is a one-off. and it's an attempt to avoid an actual congressional debate and vote. >> chuck todd, with a lot going on, as usual. todd's got a lot more on sunday's "meet the press." todd's interview with steve scalise, what he is saying about gun violence after the las vegas shooting. he, himself, a tragic shooting victim, as well. an update on a story we first told you about on thursday, congressman tim murphy, a republican from pennsylvania is resigning amid a sex scandal. that coming as murphy urged his mistress to have an abortion, when she thought she was pregnant, despite his anti-abortion views. he previously admitted the affair last month, and he announced he will not seek re-election. paul ryan says he supports the resignation. that takes affect october 21st. the nobel peace prize was awarded to the international campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. the nobel committee honored the geneva-based group that draws attention to the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. that's a quote. the committee received the second highest nominations ever. oscar-winning movie producer harvey weinstein is taking a leave of absence following a "new york times" report alleging decades of sexual harassment. in a report says accusers include rose mcgowan and ashley judd. two unnamed officials told "the times" eight women have received financial settlements over the years. weinstein is known for producing films "pulp fiction" and "shakespeare in love." nbc news has not been able to verify the allegations. his attorney says "the new york times" story is, quote, saturated with false and defamatory statements about his client. and he says "the times" ignored evidence presented to them. in his own statement, weinstein said, quote, i came of age in the '60s and '70s when all of rules about behaviors in the work places were different. that was the culture then. it is not an excuse, in the office or out of it. >> all right. let's turn back to al for the rest of your forecast. >> let's see what we have going on. again, in the northeast, a little more humid. october warmth, really setting in. we're looking for coastal flooding and thunderstorms down in florida, and they have nothing to do with nate. we're looking at severe storms we will look at in the next half hour in the central plains and high fire dangers out west. we'll have your forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. walgreens. at the corner of happy & healthy. good friday morning, i'm meteorologist, kari hall. we are waking up to sunshine again today and chilly temperatures. it's only 49 degrees in the tri-valley. 43 degrees in the north bay and san francisco, a milder 55 to start the day with a high today of 73 degrees. oakland will see a high of 78 and upper 80s and lower 90s for inland valley. the temperatures will be on the warm side over the next several days. >> thatt is a your latest weather. >> up an apology from cam newton. what he's saying about his controversial comments. >> also, know about hybrid cars, what about hybrid planes?
