West 580 comes off of the dublin grade and goes over towards the Castro Valley y, that is a major portion of the morning commute right now, some folks have to head south down towards fremont and cut over in auto mall and mission or north over towards 24, crow canyon road might be an alternate for you but a larger surface street that is going to get packed this morning. We have no idea when they will be able to clear this. Were tracking it along with chp. Start off with a deadly crash to tell you about. Were hoping maybe you have better news on the weather front. Such a big mess there. As we start out this morning we are seeing a few clouds across the bay area, we will get some clearing and it will be a nice afternoon as we take a live look outside in San Francisco. Current temperatures are at 62, heading up to 67 later today and for san jose we also see a few clouds with our morning start at 65, heading up to 77. It will be a very comfortable afternoon. So we will talk more about that coming up and a look at the complete microclimate forecast in a few minutes. Roll your your stomach. Keep your hands where we can see them. We want to go back to our breaking news in campbell, shots were fired overnight, this morning the search for a possible suspect continues. Right now streets near cyprus lane and highway 17 are shut down as police canvas the area, today in the bays kris sanchez is live on the scene. What do we know so far . Reporter i can tell you in the last couple of minutes all of that changed what you said, the situation is now over, but what a night for this campbell neighborhood here, that suspect is now in custody. Here is, though, how it all started. Shortly after midnight a neighbor called 911 saying that they saw a stranger outside a home on cyprus avenue and what sounded like explosions or perhaps banging outside that home. When Campbell Police officers arrived, they spotted the suspect who then ran, jumped some fences and then started shooting at the police. The initial contact with the subject resulted in about two or three shots being fired and over the next 10 to 15 minutes there were approximately 8 to 12 additional shots being fired. No shots were fired by any police officers, all the gunfire was by the subject. Now, no officer was shot and as you hear the captain say officers did not fire back at that suspect, but out of concern for passing motorists on highway 17 Campbell Police asked the chp to shut down the highway as you mentioned just a moment ago, those lanes are now all open again. Eventually officers did take one man into custody, but as a precaution they asked neighbors to shelter in place. That order was just lifted once Campbell Police determined that that suspect appeared to be working along. And this was a good exercise in teamwork. In addition to campbell, police and pd we also saw santa clara sheriffs deputies working to talk that gunman and perhaps prowler into custody. City and campus authorities are sending out email warnings to students saying stay out of the area. Today in the bays bob redell is in berkeley and will bring us an update on the preparations in a half hour. We are following breaking news out of sacramento right now. A disturbing story. Three children have been found dead inside a West Sacramento apartment. Now, overnight authorities arrested the man married to the childrens mother. Investigators say officers were called to that apartment late last night, about 9 00. 33yearold roger hodges was arrested several hours later at a different location. Its not clear if hodges is the father of those three children. Investigators are not releasing any details at this time. If we get it we will bring them to you. At 5 06, Nursing Homes in florida are being checked after eight elderly people died at a facility that lost its air conditioning during hurricane irma. We brought you this breaking news story yesterday morning as emergency crews rescued those residents from the Rehabilitation Center in hollywood hills. 115 seniors were taken to the hospital, just 50 feet away. They will remain in serious condition this morning. The news sent panic throughout the community as people rushed to the facility to look for loved ones. My wife, they couldnt find her mom. Its a sad state of affairs, we all have elderly people and facilities and we know that we depend on those people and those facilities to care for our most vulnerable elderly population. And that was hollywood floridas police chief. Meantime, more than 6,000 National Guard troops are on the ground helping in hurricane recovery efforts. 5 07. Continuing coverage this morning of the water crisis happening in alameda. Were told the water is now safe to shower in but not drink. Last night east bay mud lifted parts of its water warning for certain alameda homeowners, it stems from contamination affecting the Alameda Point neighborhood. Earlier in the week they warned people not to drink or wash with their tap water. They spent yesterday flushing out that system. Live look at the bay bridge this morning. The push to raise tolls by 3 on bay area bridges is now speeding through the state legislature. The bill calls for voters to decide on the hike in june or november of next year. Money from the toll increase will fund transit projects and the measure does not include the Golden Gate Bridge which is actually a federally managed span, its separate. Assembly members approved it yesterday, now will go to the senate. If it doesntm i pass by tomorr legislators would have to try again in january. Good thursday morning, 5 08 now as you make plans for the day, maybe youre going to go golfing today in halfmoon bay, it is going to be mostly cloudy throughout much of the morning and still at noon some lingering clouds, temperatures there reaching into the mid 60s. What were trying for is you see the off ramp right by this crash, all lanes of west 580 are closed at eden con i dont know, i think that is eden canyon the off ramp there. They may let a few cars by but theres too much backup to get everybody past the scene. Chp may try to get one of these lanes open but this here is the scene of a deadly crash where two big rigs sandwiched a smaller car in between them. We dont know whose fault it is. We do know that this will have to remain in place until the coroner can complete the investigation, same for chp. They also have to off load at least one of these trucks that were full of cargo. This will be a long time. Look at this backup off of the dublin grade, west 580 is jammed solid. Seeing the jam all the way off of the dublin interchange right here. Thats at least seven miles at least. Thats backed up to the dublin interchange. Crowian i dont know road is one of your options, but that will be jammed up early on as well. Some folks will head south on 680 or westbound 24. Traffic is light right now but this is a huge spot especially early in the commute. We will track this and we will also of course follow the details of the parties involved, weve already lost one life as a result of this crash and there are some other injuries and also a fuel spill which can complicate things, a very tough situation early in the commute. Authorities saying a sophomore boy brought a rifle and handgun to school outside spokane just has classes were starting on wednesday morning. Authorities say the first gun the student used actually jammed, but then he pulled out another gun and shot and killed a student who confronted him. The School Resource officer at a nearby middle school arrived and eventually took him into custody. Happening today police in San Francisco are going to talk about Public Safety specifically in the Mission District. This comes in the wake of a recent deadly shooting that Authorities Say involved a stolen gun from a police officer. The chief of police will be among those talking tonight at that meeting. It starts at 6 00 p. M. At the rich man recreation center. In San Francisco private transit vehicles could soon see new reg laces, talking about companies that provide passenger vans. Chronicle reports next week transportation officials will consider requiring those vehicles to stay out of muni lanes. Fees for the company could also go up. Also 70 in san mateo this afternoon, San Francisco reaching 66 on the embarcadero and the north bay up to 75 in sonoma this afternoon. As we get a look at the day planner for oakland heading out the door at about 8 00 this morning we will be at 61 degrees, a few clouds still in the mix. We will see partly cloudy skies throughout the day and breezy winds and temperature at 68 degrees at 4 00, eventually once again hitting 70 degrees. If youre going hiking in the south bay today it will start out cloudy, we will be at 61 degrees, temperatures will be slow to rise to start but as we get into the afternoon and everything clears out it will be nice and mild and were also looking forward to a clear sunset this evening. Im stepping out of the screen because i got word now that you get your eyes adjusted im going to step in, explain. This is the crash, the deadly crash thats blocked west 580. These folks that you see getting off of the freeway just a few at a time squeezing past the emergency vehicles thats the eden canyon off ramp from westbound 580. For all purposes, practical purposes it is closed off and stopped in Castro Valley. Lets show you where this is. This has caused about 8 miles of backup starting back before you get to the dublin interchange the worst of it comes up the dublin grade over and over toward the eden canyon off ramp. Big rigs were involved as well as a smaller vehicle squashed in between the two larger vehicles. This is a cargo that has to be offloaded and the deadly crash investigation. Right now folks are heading down towards the niles canyon area for highway 84 and heading up toward highway 24. On waze the timing thats involved here, this is the backup you see on the dublin grade thats why you want to avoid that. Waze maps out times from san leonel droe over towards fremont. This blue route almost two hours from that route if you can get off at the off ramp. Take 680 its a better route and only a half an hour, were saving you 90 minutes by using waze. Im stepping in right here, this big rig is the front one, theres another one behind it and in between those two rigs from what i understand was a car that was smashed and the person inside that car was died as a result of this crash. We have seen in the last few minutes folks getting off here, squeezing by emergency vehicles at eden canyon road. That is the only way they can get out of this big brachup, 7, 8 miles of backup. This critical portion of the east bay the Speed Sensors started to light up, we will give them a chance to adjust, still effectively closed as you travel off of the dublin grade and over toward eden canyon road west 580 out of the trivalley and heading over to the Castro Valley y. Folks will have to head north toward high 24. Some folks are taking a longer route and trying to adjust, a lot of folks are head up here. The metering lights are on at the bay bridge but traffic is lighter. Also heading down towards niles canyon, highway 84 as the alternate. This is a huge backup caused by the deadly crash. Now that were here at the scene were at westbound 580 eden canyon road which as you can see is shut down. Were trying to piece together what happened. We believe that the driver of this big rig the one on the left side of your screen hit that car that you mentioned, swerved after hitting the car and then collided into the back of this big rig right here on the right side of why you are screen. We believe its the driver of the big rig on the left side of your screen who died, not the person in the car. Were still trying to confirm this with chp but thats our understanding based on what we are observing here on the scene. This happened within the past hour or so. As i mentioned, 580 westbound direction is shut down, as you look to your left they have cars coming off of 580, this is heading westbound, theyre coming single file off the off ramp from eden canyon and as you look to your left side and down there theyre getting back on to 580 on the on ramp as eden canyon. Its a single file, its a trickle, even though the road technically is shut down they are letting these cars through, but as a result the backup we know is going to be tremendous for the morning commute, especially since this is a fatality and it typically takes a long time to clear a scene like this, considering especially that they have two big rigs involved. Happening today the through suspects rested in connection to a deadly shooting in San Franciscos Mission District earlier this month will face a judge. Police say the gun used in the shooting was an officers personal handgun and now that officer could be facing jail time as well. Police say the shooting happened at 26th and south van ness avenue back in august. It happened just days after the suspects reportedly stole a handgun from an off Duty Officers private vehicle. The officer could get six months in jail because of a law that requires a gun left in a parked car be in a lockbox. And that lockbox needs to be secured in the trunk. Former supervisor david campos wrote that law. The idea was to make sure that every person in the city, every san franciscan knows that they have responsibility if they have a gun and they leave it in a vehicle that it has to be secured. The car break in and gun theft were not reported because police say there were no visible signs of the burglary and the officer did not realize that the vehicle had been broken into nor the firearm had been stolen. Nbc bay areas Investigative Unit has found that between 2010 and 2015, 412 guns were stolen in San Francisco alone. 5 35. A man accused of shooting two off duty oakland firefighters and killing one of them is expected in court for a plea hearing today. Oliver junio shot the firefighters last june after a music festival. Jake walter died, the other firefighter is expected to recover. Prosecutors say that shooting appears to be unprovoked. New this morning a new San Francisco ordinance called for a ban on Glass Containers at city parks but the proposals most controversial part has been dropped. It would have fined people for littering and dumping in dolores park. Legislation designed to deal with litter and broken glass is constantly found at parks but the proposed 1,000 fine for dolores park was dropped over concerns it would disproportionately hurt the poor and the homeless. So far the full board has not voted on that plan. Also new this morning home sale numbers are showing how the bay area market continues to tighten up. Were hearing about homes that sell over their asking price, might seem like a dream come true but its actually making things pretty hard not just for buyers but sellers as well. Today in the bays kris sanchez has the latest inventory numbers. There just arent a lot of homes with sale signs out. Reporter no, the minute you see a for sale sign pretty much its gone the next day. I talked with a realtor who had to put out a Facebook Live asking anybody who knew of a home for her buyers who needed to stay near their neighborhood schools, a neighborhood that has near zero inventory. At campbell there are 36 homes for sale in all of the city. The county numbers are really tough for buyers and sellers. Take a look here at brandnew numbers this morning. In Santa Clara County already i total about 415 homes for sale that includes singlefamily homes, town homes, condos, only 900 are for sale this week. That is a 43 decrease over last year and its been on this decline for a couple years. The realtor i talked with says that the low inventory puts the buyers and sell rs in a tough spot because folks who might want to cash in on this hot market and downsize or move up and make a little money theyre staying put out of fear they wont have something to buy once they sell. If youre thinking maybe the bubble will burst, this realtor says dont hold your breath. We dont see that happening. We you know, all of the economists are looking at the job market and all of our growth around here and though it seems unsustainable, we dont foresee it going down. So maybe youre thinking its just tough in Santa Clara County because of google, apple and the new campus coming up in san jose. Its not the case. Its also tough in other counties. Coming up at 6 30 i will show you some of the comparable numbers for San Francisco, san mateo and Alameda County in case youre thinking maybe i will check out another town, there may not be room for you there, either. I step in here, there are the two big rigs involved in this crash, there is a smaller vehicle there. Bob redell showed us those details. The traffic is squeezing off of eden canyon road then back on to the freeway. Look at the map we have seven, eight miles of backup coming off of the dublin grade and starting back here in dublin on your approach to the dublin interchange west 580 is jammed up to eden canyon road where traffic opens up towards that Castro Valley y. The rest of the bay moving well, a niles 84 and highway 24 over toward the bay bridge. Look at the bay bridge because all that traffic flow actually caused a later backup so its only just in the last two minutes that we have seen all lanes here back up, thats providing a little more lighter traffic for the maze. Okay. Do you know what, thats right, when youre sitting in traffic out there just keep in mind that the weekend is coming. Its almost here. Friday eve. Friday comes and then the weekend. So we are starting to make plans, youre sitting at work at your desk and youre thinking what am i going to do this weekend. This is coming off of the dublin grade, traffic basically stopped, crawling here and thats getting over toward the scene at eden canyon road. Thats a total of about eight miles of backup if you include this jam thats approaching that dublin interchange as well. Things are starting to crawl here as well approaching dougherty. We will show you that same thing, that is a big jam, crow canyon road will take you past the scene. Maybe a lighter flow. Overall were seeing that for most of the bay. Aside from that big issue for Castro Valley Everything Else moves well. We have 24 as one option gets over towards the bay bridge and waze shows you the difference taking 680 down and around, only about 35 minutes, that blue route is 2 hours and 19 minutes so were saving you actually an hour and a half of your commute by taking an alternate route.
